Kate Walker : You still here, still in London?
Harvey Shine : Sure. Can I explain?
Kate Walker : No, no. You don't need to explain, Harvey.
Harvey Shine : I want to.
Kate Walker : No, honestly. I don't need to...
Harvey Shine : Kate, please. I was in a hospital.
Kate Walker : Oh, God. Why?
Harvey Shine : No. It's nothing. I left my pills in New York. I have this irregular heart beat. I had it since I was a kid.
Kate Walker : Arrhythmia.
Harvey Shine : How do you know what it is?
Kate Walker : Cause my father has it.
Harvey Shine : Well, young men get it, too.
[Kate laughs]
Harvey Shine : Aw, Kate, I'm so sorry I wasn't there.
-
Kate Walker : I had a lovely time, Harvey, and I like you - I really do. But you know, I don't really do fountains at noon either. I mean, I live in - Well, I live in Wilton Greens, and you live wherever you...
Harvey Shine : I live in White Plains.
Kate Walker : Exactly. And Monday morning, life kicks in, and we're not teenagers. Got a life and our jobs and our family and everything, and I had a lovely time. I won't forget it. Thank you. But...
Harvey Shine : What?
Kate Walker : Well, it's not, you know, real life.
Harvey Shine : It is.
Kate Walker : No, it isn't, Harvey.
Harvey Shine : It is.
Kate Walker : No, it's not, Harvey.
Harvey Shine : No, it is real life. It's real life for me.
Kate Walker : No, no. I know. I know. But it's not just about you, is it? It's about me, as well. You don't know anything about me. Look at me. I mean, it's pathetic. I actually expected you not to show. In fact, I think I actually almost wanted you not to show because it's just sort of easier that way. You know, you just dive in there. You just whoosh anywhere. It's the deep end and I'm not a bloody swimming pool, Harvey, and I'm not - I'm not gonna do it. I'm not gonna do it. I'm not gonna do it because it'll hurt. Sometime or other there'll be, you know, it's not working, or I need my space, or whatever it is and it will end, and it will hurt, and I won't do it. I won't do it, and I won't...
[walks away crying]
-
Kate Walker : I don't think I've stayed up all night since I was a student.
[becomes very quiet]
Harvey Shine : You got sad. Why?
Kate Walker : [doesn't speak for a moment] I was pregnant once. Didn't have it. I mean... I didn't think twice about it. That's what smart girls did. Yeah. I do... I do sometimes wonder, you know, wh-
[crying while speaking]
Kate Walker : whether they would be funny or clever or... Oh. I don't know...
[wiping tears]
Kate Walker : neurotic. Stupid, really. I don't know why I told you that.
Harvey Shine : Meet me here tomorrow, okay?
Kate Walker : What?
Harvey Shine : Right here, right in this spot, noon. Okay?
Kate Walker : What about your flight?
Harvey Shine : I don't have to go.
Kate Walker : Why?
[Harvey looks at her, but doesn't answer]
Kate Walker : Oh, shut up, Harvey. Stop it. You think that now, you wait till tomorrow.
Harvey Shine : Today is tomorrow.
Kate Walker : Harvey. We don't know anything about each other.
[chuckles]
Kate Walker : You're, you know...
Harvey Shine : Old.
Kate Walker : No. I wasn't gonna say that. Well, okay, you're a bit older. I'm...
[sighs]
Kate Walker : I can be mean.
Harvey Shine : So can I.
Kate Walker : No. Truly cantankerous.
Harvey Shine : [thinks for a moment] Cantankerous, I've never been.
Kate Walker : [laughs] I should be going.
Harvey Shine : I'm very serious. I'll be here waiting at noon, okay?
[Kate sighs and wipes her nose with tissue]
Harvey Shine : Okay?
Kate Walker : [kisses Harvey before leaving] Harvey Shine.
Harvey Shine : [calling to her] Tell me what time!
Kate Walker : [calls back] Noon!
Harvey Shine : I can't hear you!
Kate Walker : [louder] Noon!
[laughs]
-
Kate Walker : [answers cell phone] Mum, I love you, but not now.
Harvey Shine : Should I take that as a hopeful sign?
[Kate snickers and smiles a little]
Harvey Shine : If you give me just a little wider smile.
Kate Walker : [laughs] Oh, shut up, Harvey. So how's this going to work, Mr. Shine?
Harvey Shine : I have absolutely no idea. But it will. I promise you that.
Kate Walker : Shall we walk?
Harvey Shine : Yes.
-
Kate Walker : Hang on a sec.
[takes off shoes and carries them]
Kate Walker : Oh.
[takes Harvey's arm]
Kate Walker : That's better.
Harvey Shine : [looks at her holding his arm] I think you're my kind of girl.
[Kate chuckles]
Harvey Shine : Why don't you ask me those questions?
Kate Walker : Which ones?
Harvey Shine : You know, at the airport, when I avoided you.
Kate Walker : Oh, the questionnaire.
Harvey Shine : Yes.
Kate Walker : Oh, okay. Name?
Harvey Shine : Harvey Shine.
Kate Walker : Place of residence?
Harvey Shine : I'm in transition.
-
Harvey Shine : I have to tell you that it is a relief to find someone who actually says what they're feeling and what they're thinking. Especially in a place that is supposed to be, you know, Britian. English, reserved.
Kate Walker : Oh, no, no. Haven't you heard? We're a nation changed. Ever since Diana died, we're all sort of flowing out of us like water. You guys showed us the way, actually. No more stiff upper lip for us.
Harvey Shine : And what is that, exactly?
Kate Walker : What?
Harvey Shine : Stiff upper lip.
Kate Walker : I'm not sure, it's kind of the whole clenched thing.
[makes face]
Harvey Shine : Clenched?
[makes face too]
Kate Walker : I think so, you know. See, you know, when you cry, your lips wobble and when you're being strong, they don't.
Harvey Shine : Like this.
[making face]
Kate Walker : No, that's sort of more like a bulldog. No, don't do that. You look like you've got no teeth at all.
Harvey Shine : It's my first attempt at a stiff upper lip. Who does...
Kate Walker : I don't really kn - I think it's sort of the tension in your jaw.
Harvey Shine : Who does that?
Kate Walker : Aristocrats.
Harvey Shine : The aristocrats?
Kate Walker : Posh people.
-
Kate Walker : [phone rings] Hang on. Sorry. Oh, sorry. I should get this.
Harvey Shine : Go ahead.
Kate Walker : Hello, Mum? Hello. Sorry. I've been busy. Yeah. No. I'm out, actually. Yes, yes with someone. No, with someone else. Yes, a man.
-
Kate Walker : Excuse me, sir. I wonder if I could trouble you for two minutes of your time. Won't take a second.
Harvey Shine : No. I'm tired, you know?
Kate Walker : Yes, I do.
-
Harvey Shine : I didn't go.
Susan : I'm glad.
Harvey Shine : This is Kate.
Kate Walker : Oh, hello.
[she and Susan shake hands]
Harvey Shine : A friend.
Kate Walker : How do you do? Congratulations. You look fantastic.
Susan : Thank you.
-
Harvey Shine : I'm gonna dance your socks off.
-
Kate Walker : Fair enough. You win.
Harvey Shine : What do you say, let me make it up to both of us and I'll buy you lunch? Or tea. How about tea, if it's teatime?
Kate Walker : Thanks very much, but I don't know you, and you don't know me, so...
Harvey Shine : That's exactly why we should have tea together.
Kate Walker : It's very sweet of you, but thank you. No.
Harvey Shine : Well, you've got your book.
Kate Walker : Mm.
[cell phone rings]
Harvey Shine : If that's for me, I'm in the shower. Aren't you gonna answer it?
Kate Walker : No.
Harvey Shine : Should I take that as a hopeful sign?
[Kate smiles]
Harvey Shine : If it is, you can give me a little wider smile.
[Kate laughs]
-
Harvey Shine : [to waiter] Thank you.
[to Kate]
Harvey Shine : See? We're having together.
Kate Walker : No. We're having lunch next to each other.
Harvey Shine : Ah. By the way, Harvey - Harvey Shine.
Kate Walker : [shakes hand] Kate Walker. So, why aren't you at the wedding?
Harvey Shine : [notices vaccum] I knew there was something that was missing. I had to get back for work.
Kate Walker : What, for the job you just lost?
Harvey Shine : Yes, exactly.
Kate Walker : Did you enjoy it, the job?
Harvey Shine : Yes. No. Yes, originally.
Kate Walker : What was it?
Harvey Shine : I write jingles.
Kate Walker : Wow.
Harvey Shine : That's the normal response.
Kate Walker : [chuckles] Did you always want to write jingles, or was - was there something more?
[Harvey laughs]
Kate Walker : What?
Harvey Shine : No, no. I love it. You cut right through it. I like that.
Kate Walker : I'll take that as a compliment.
Harvey Shine : You should. I would have given anything to have been a jazz pianist.
-
Harvey Shine : So, uh, how'd it go?
Kate Walker : Um, well, the usual. Lovely, mild-mannered Mike gave us the latest installment from his psychosexual thriller... He's 86.
-
Harvey Shine : [to child] Hi.
Girl at Wedding : You do know this is the children's table.
Harvey Shine : Yes.
Kate Walker : [to boy] Hello.
[whispers to Harvey]
Kate Walker : Bit of a chatterbox.
Harvey Shine : Mm.
-
Harvey Shine : [on the phone] Hello?
Marvin : Hey, Harvey. It's Marvin. Where are you?
Harvey Shine : I'm still in London, Marvin.
Marvin : Well, you get yourself back here, my friend. I got some great news. You were right. The Samuelson account, none of the kids could handle it. They couldn't nail it. They ended up picking one of your old tunes. They want you to come back and update it. We need you back, Harvey. You're old room's waiting for you.
[brief pause]
Marvin : Harvey?
Harvey Shine : Oh, well, that's great, Marvin.
Marvin : Yeah. Yeah. It's great. Look I know when to eat humble pie. So, hey, when can you get back here? Harvey?
Harvey Shine : I'm not coming back.
Marvin : What?
Harvey Shine : I quit.
Marvin : What do you mean you quit, Harvey? Look, man. You need us.
Harvey Shine : No. You know, I don't. As you said, it's my last chance. Look, I got to go.
[hangs up phone]
-
Harvey Shine : Are you on a holiday?
Attractive Woman : No. Business.
[pause]
Attractive Woman : You?
Harvey Shine : Oh, my daughter's getting married.
Attractive Woman : Congratulations.
Harvey Shine : Yeah, thanks. Well, kind of. She's American, he's American, and they're still getting married in London. I told her we have a perfectly good wedding system here. I mean they both work in London. That's why there...
Airline Stewardess : [hands wine to Harvey] There you are, sir.
Harvey Shine : Oh, thanks. Thanks very much. Can I just give you this?
Airline Stewardess : Yes.
Harvey Shine : Thank you.
Airline Stewardess : Thank you.
Harvey Shine : Does flying make you nervous.
Attractive Woman : No. I do it all the time.
Harvey Shine : Oh. I don't like it. I have to fortify myself.
[drinks his wine]
Harvey Shine : You know that old joke, one guy says to the other...
Attractive Woman : Tell you what, I have got meetings in the morning, when we land, so I think I'm gonna try and get some sleep.
Harvey Shine : Sure.
Attractive Woman : Sorry, I just - I'll be useless if I don't get some sleep.
[turns off light, gets herself comfortable and sleeps]
Harvey Shine : No, no. Go ahead. Go ahead.
-
Harvey Shine : Marvin. Hey, Marvin.
[rushes to catch up with Marvin in parking garage]
Marvin : Hey, Harvey. Shouldn't you be in London?
Harvey Shine : Yeah. I'm heading there right now. What's going on? Johnnie said something about you wanting him to present on Monday?
Marvin : Oh, yeah. No, no. I was just thinking that, with you being in London, you should stay a while.
Harvey Shine : What?
Marvin : There's no need to rush back. Enjoy your daughter's wedding.
Harvey Shine : What?
Marvin : Well, Johnnie can do it. I mean he can pitch the Samuelson account.
Harvey Shine : No, I'm coming back. Those are my connections. They have been for years.
Marvin : I know. I'm just - They got new people there, you know? I just think they might want something different.
Harvey Shine : No, I really want to come back. I should be there in person.
Marvin : In person?
Harvey Shine : Yeah. I want to stand behind my music.
Marvin : But nobody cares, Harvey. They're demos. They're already pressed. Nobody gives a shit. They don't need to see you. They don't need to see me.
Harvey Shine : I'm back Monday, Marvin. I'm coming back
Marvin : Well, you better land this one, Harvey.
Harvey Shine : What does that mean?
Marvin : It means what it means.
Harvey Shine : Say it.
Marvin : There are no more chances, Harvey.
[unlocks car door and opens]
Marvin : Enjoy London.
[he drives away]
-
Harvey Shine : Hi. I'm with the wedding party. There should be a room for me. Harvey Shine.
Concierge : [checks computer for info] Yes. We have a double room for you.
Harvey Shine : Good. Is everyone else checked in?
Concierge : I'm not sure, sir.
Harvey Shine : My daughter - Susan Shine? She may already be going by the name Wright - Susan Wright. W-R-I-G-H-T.
Concierge : [looks up more info on the computer] No, sir. No one of that name. Sir, Room 522.
-
Susan : Hi!
Harvey Shine : Wow. Let me look. Let me look.
Susan : Whoa.
Harvey Shine : You look beautiful.
Susan : Thank you. You look...
Harvey Shine : Like a bad lounge act.
Susan : [laughs] No, you don't. You look very, very nice.
Harvey Shine : No. They told me that everyone that everyone was going to wear white here. But I was misinformed.
Susan : It looks good. I like it.
Harvey Shine : Thank you.
-
Harvey Shine : Top o' the morning to you, sir.
Concierge : I'm afraid they're both out of order, Mr. Shine. If you wouldn't mind using the stairs.
Harvey Shine : I wouldn't mind at all.
-
Harvey Shine : Jeanie, did you move me, my sweetheart?
Jean : No, darling.
Susan : Dad, I moved you. I thought it might be easier if you needed to get up.
Harvey Shine : Oh, sure. Okay.
-
Jean : Harvey.
Harvey Shine : Hello, Jean.
Jean : Could I have a glass of water, please?
Harvey Shine : No Ice.
Jean : [bartender gives glass of water to Jean] Thank you.
[both she and Harvey drink]
Jean : Are you okay?
Harvey Shine : I'm excellent.
Jean : Go a little easy, okay, Harvey?
Harvey Shine : Why? Are you afraid I'm going to embarrass you again?
Jean : No, I'm - I'm afraid you're gonna embarrass yourself, Harvey. We're here for Susan. This is her weekend. It's Scott and Susan's weekend.
Harvey Shine : [he laughs] You're good. You're still good. I mean you've always known how to make me feel like a piece of shit in 30 seconds.
Jean : Well, you gave me a lot of practice.
-
Harvey Shine : Why'd you marry me?
Jean : I was - I was very young, and you were lots of fun.
Harvey Shine : And how's Brian? Is he fun?
Jean : He thinks I'm fun. Harvey, go home now. Get some sleep, hmm? Come back and see your daughter get married. Our baby girl's getting married.
-
Harvey Shine : Hi.
Aggie : Hi.
Harvey Shine : I'm looking for Kate Walker. Kate.
Aggie : Who wants to know?
Harvey Shine : A friend.
Aggie : Oonagh, there's a man out here asking for Kate. He says "a friend".
Harvey Shine : Yes.
Oonagh : Friend?
Harvey Shine : Well, more than a friend.
Oonagh : More than a friend?
Harvey Shine : Yes.
Oonagh : Are you the American?
Harvey Shine : Yes, that's right.
Oonagh : She likes you. I can tell. Don't you go messing her around now. Don't you hurt her.
Harvey Shine : Oh, I won't. I wouldn't.
Oonagh : She's not here. She's left for the day. You might still find her at her class. In fact, it starts about now. It's down at the South Bank called the National.
Harvey Shine : Yes, I know.
Oonagh : Oh, you know, do you?
Harvey Shine : Yes.
Oonagh : Go on. Go and get her.
Aggie : [he rushes out of the airport] See you, Harvey.
-
Harvey Shine : I'm sorry. I have the 1:30 to JFK.
Check-In Steward 1 : I'm sorry, sir. I'm dealing with a passenger.
Harvey Shine : I want to go straight to the gate.
Check-In Steward 1 : I will answer all your questions, but you will have to wait.
Harvey Shine : Okay. Ma'am, excuse me. I'm on the 1:30 to JFK.
Check-In Steward 2 : Sir - Sir, there is a queue.
Harvey Shine : I appreciate that but I'm on the 1:30 flight to JFK.
Check-In Steward 2 : That flight's now closed.
Harvey Shine : No no no, the plane doesn't take off for 40 minutes. I just want you to check...
Check-In Steward 2 : Sir, the gate is already closed.
Harvey Shine : But all I have is a hand luggage. Please, just let me through.
Check-In Steward 2 : Sir, that is not hand luggage.
Harvey Shine : What, this?
[throws bag in the rubbish]
Harvey Shine : Now will you let me on, please?
Check-In Steward 2 : No, sir.
Harvey Shine : When's the next flight?
Check-In Steward 2 : [looks up next flight on the computer] The earliest I can get you on for sure is tomorrow morning.
Harvey Shine : Tomorrow?
Check-In Steward 2 : Sir, you're gonna have to stay calm.
