For Top Chef Season 20, contestants who competed in international versions of the Bravo cooking competition show, including many who won or finished in the finals, returned for World All-Stars. By episode 3, four chefs have been eliminated from the main competition. However, they can win their way back into the game by competing in Last Chance Kitchen. Two chefs have already been officially eliminated.
Samuel Albert is the first officially eliminated from ‘Top Chef: World All-Stars’
Top Chef: France winner Samuel Albert was the first eliminated when he failed to deliver in the vegetable-forward dish challenge. He faced Top Chef: Portland finalist Dawn Burrell in the first episode of Last Chance Kitchen as her crispy rice cut her from the main competition.
The two were tasked with recreating their former winning dishes using the same protein in 30 minutes. Sam decided to incorporate his Japanese French fusion into the salmon-based dish, but the time constraint concerned him.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Monarch Home Entertainment. Director/writer: Travis Betz. Cast: Sarah Lassez and Dustin Fasching. This reviewer knows Indiana born Travis Betz from his earlier production Lo. This title featured a demon and a circle of protection. This title was a small film. Betz's latest, The Dead Inside, is also a small film. There are only two characters and all of the action takes place in one setting, much like Betz's earlier film. Thus, there are only a few places this film can go. The Dead Inside is a little too mundane in this tight space to be enjoyable and it is a little too long to be recommended for most film fans. The story seems simple enough. Fi (Sarah Lassez) and West (Dustin Fasching) are a couple living together in a smallish apartment. West is a photographer by day, while...

In the horror musical The Dead Inside, we meet tortured young lovers Wes and Fi, and while their love for each other burns strong, artistically their hearts have been locked in a box for years. Wes is a burned out photographer paying the bills by shooting weddings, and Fi is the writer's blocked author of a series of zombie novellas called "The Dead Survive."
When Fi begins to show signs of schizophrenia, Wes does everything in his power to help her get better. Strange behaviors and breathing patterns escalate; soon he discovers that darker forces lurk inside her. Afraid and completely lost, Wes has no choice but to imprison his girlfriend until he can figure out what to do with the evil that has taken over his true love.

Lo Movie PosterThe following review has been written by UVic alum Ed Sum, who is also a Victoria resident, website owner, and lover of all things horror. Have a read of Ed's second review on Travis Betz's Lo, which is a challenging journey to hell for love.
Writer / Director: Travis Betz
Just how many puns can be made when talking about Lo? It is a flick that is lauded by some as terrible and others, as a genius work of art. One can search for the high points in this production, and there will be a few surprisingly good bits of drama.
There are a few moments of well acted camaraderie between the principal characters, once when the performers find that magical space. Unfortunately it just does not happen fast enough in this Faustian style play; so when Justin (Ward Roberts) stumbles his way to find unrequited love, it...

Up and coming composer Scott Glasgow, whose recent score for Lo is receiving critical acclaim and whose other credits include Chasing Ghosts, Hack!, The Gene Generation, Bone Dry and Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, is currently composing the score for veteran director Jeff Kanew’s new film, The Legend of Awesomest Maximus, for National Lampoon. This is Glasgow’s first project with Kanew, who is the director of such comedy classics as Revenge ...

It irritates me when a movie completely slips under my radar, especially when said motion picture is something that would likely appeal to my bizarre taste in cinema. Writer/director Travis Betz’s 2009 romantic horror/comedy “Lo” managed to escape my attention entirely, which is strange, really, considering how often I dig through horror-related websites in search of obscure material. No matter — the film has wormed its way into my tender psyche thanks to the intriguing trailer provided below. What’s more, I’ve mined a few photos from the film’s official Facebook page to round out the experience. That’s just the type of selfless individual I am. Here’s the Lo-down, so to speak: Love is a tricky little devil. It has the power to command great sacrifice from those it touches. Enter Justin. A loser who’s most exciting moment in any given day is...

A slow week for DVDs but one with a few notable selections. Perhaps one the most notable is the release (finally) of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson (review, amazon), a look at Britain’s most famous (or infamous) inmate.
One of quietearth’s favourites of the year (number 2 on his list to be exact) is Erik Poppe’s Troubled Water (review, amazon) is also hitting the ground running this week.
On the relationship side of things, and with lots of time before Valentine’s Day, we’ve got Jay Dipietro’s Peter and Vandy (clips, amazon), a love story told out of order and starring Jason Ritter while those looking for something a little heftier, there’s Travis Betz’s Lo (review, amazon), a story of love, mystery and demons.
Killer parental units are also making a splash this week with the release of Nelson McCormick’s The Stepfather (amazon...

Lo is a film from Travis Betz that began filming within Los Angeles in the summer of 2007. The film has spent some time on the film festival circuit including the Austin Film Festival and now the film will be available on DVD, as of February 9th. Lacking in set design, Lo seems like a play divided into acts that would be suitable for a small audience rather than a solitary viewing. Lo tackles one of the most complex of emotions, love. According to Betz love is hell and so is the final scene of the film.
Lo centers around the concept of love, as Justin (Ward Roberts) travels to hell in search of his passion, April (Sarah Lassez). Justin is protected from death by a pentagram, but demon Lo (Jermiah Birkett) is able to torment "dinner" despite this magical protection. In search of his beloved Justin...

Castle Rock has obtained the rights to Playing Joe which Variety is describing as a Hitchcock-style thriller. Producer Mike Lobell says 'the script is a Rio-set romantic thriller in the vein of North by Northwest, with memory loss and recovery key to the plot'. Justin (Ward Roberts) is an unexceptional guy who works at the usual McJob. His life gets interesting with the arrival of April (Sarah Lassez), an eccentric little cutie whose only apparent possession is a book locked in a box that she carries everywhere she goes. Justin is immediately smitten with her, and before long she moves in and all seems right with the world. But April, see, is a demon, and her fellow minions of evil soon find her and take her back to hell. So lovesick Justin opens her locked box and uses the book, a tome for summoning demons, to call forth Lo (Jeremiah Birkett), a lesser demon of Hell, who must do whatever Justin commands as long as his steadily shrinking pentagram keeps the demon at bay. Justin orders Lo to return April to him,...

We've always been fans of filmmaker Travis Betz, who delivered the awesome Joshua, alongside the bizarre micro-budget demon love story Lo. Now, he's switching gears once again with a horror-musical entitled The Dead Inside, which features music by Betz and Joel Van Vliet. Sarah Lassez and Dustin Fasching star. The Dead Inside is a story that explores the dark side of inspiration. Wes and Fi are lovers whose creative muses have all but vanished from their lives. When Fi begins to show signs of schizophrenia, Wes does everything in his power to help her get betterthat is until Fis true affliction decides to introduce itself to both Wes and the world. Fighting against her possession, they rediscover inspiration in the grimmest corners of their situation. Their muse has returned, killing Fi from the inside and haunting Wes with each passing breath.

This past week Boston was witness to the 11th annual Boston Underground Film Festival, which kicked off on March 19th and ran until the 26th. I was a part of it this year more than I had been previously, mainly because the savvy ladies and gents behind Buff asked me to be on the jury for this year’s fest! Needless to say I was honored.
This being my first jury, I didn’t know what to expect, but all in all it was a very cool experience. I got a chance to see a lot of movies I normally either wouldn’t have time for or interest in, and got a chance to expand my horizons a bit on top of all the great perks that came with being a judge.
The festival itself is run by a select group of people who have been steadily making it more...

Thanks to the great people who put on Rock and Shock each year in beautiful downtown Worcester, Mass., I had last week off from Wrap-Up duties; but now, despite this nasty cold I brought home with me, it's back to work. But first let me point you in the direction of our 2008 Rock and Shock Photo Gallery, where you can see a sample of the fun and frivolity to be found there. Start making your plans now to attend next year's event -- it's always a good time!

An experimental film that was shot in only 3 days, Betz came up with the idea while watching Jan Svankmeijer's Faust. Betz said "The thought of restraining a single actor to a lone circle drawn on the floor, where he is taunted by demons and the memory of his love was a very tempting challenge!" Below the break you'll find the trailer, and this looks deliciously, and sickly, whimsical.

Using the book, he contacts the demon Lo, ordering it to help him rescue his girl from the fiery pits. But Lo has other plans for his new master... dinner being one of them."

What, you may ask, is “Lo”? Well, it’s probably one of the coolest trailers I’ve seen in a while, even if it makes no sense at all. It’s got some great makeup effects, a cool jazz song and twisted visuals. So it’s no surprise that it’s for the new film from Joshua (review) director Travis Betz!
