The savage beating that Sookie receives from the Rattrays at the start of this episode has to be one of the most brutal displays of violence against a woman that I've seen in a TV show. They certainly don't hold back. Sookie lies there bloodied, battered and broken - and it's kind of hard to watch. As if the Rattrays weren't loathsome enough, they then prepare to shoot the collie that comes to Sookie's rescue (fot this alone, they must die!). I'm glad Sookie saved the collie in return. It really is quite satisfying when the Rattrays get what's coming to them (although, personally I thought they got off far too easily. I mean...broken necks? Too swift a demise for them, in my opinion, given what they put Sookie through). Still, never have I been so happy to see two characters bite the dust. Thankyou, Bill, for taking care of them.
This episode was one of the only times I felt sorry for Jason at all. When he thought he'd killed Maudette Pickens - I felt a twinge of sympathy for him (and Jason was right - he's not that smart. Certainly not smart enough to commit a murder). SO glad you got killed, Maudette, given what a nasty trick that was to play on him. Honestly, I have no idea what Jason ever saw in Maudette, given that he was also with Dawn - who's definitely the better out of the two. Her greeting him when he knocked on her door ("Jason, what the f@#k?") amused me, as did Jason pointing to himself in the mirror later on when they were having sex.
Good on Sookie for asking questions before accepting Bill's blood (rather than just diving right in and drinking it). Again he asks her, "What are you?', and once more puts a slight twist on how he asks it. I liked her line to Bill (after she's confessed to him that she's telepathic and he asks her if she can hear his thoughts), "No. That's why I like you so much. I can't hear you at all. You have no idea how peaceful it is after a lifetime of "blah, blah, blah"." - but not to be outdone by her following line of, "Bill, you were just licking blood out of my head. I don't think it gets much more personal than that.". Also good was the montage of Sookie's previous 'dates' and how they went badly for her upon hearing what the guys were thinking. There's some really good chemistry going on between Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer in their scenes together.
Like in the next scene, when Bill's walking Sookie to her car and they're discussing when Bill was made a vampire. Also, Sookie's response to Bill suddenly disappearing (which seems to be a common trick of vampires) was great: "Well, that was creepy.". Basically, every scene with Sookie and Bill in this episode was a good one (I loved the way Sookie said, "Oh Bill, won't you please come in." after being informed that she had to invite him into her house before he could enter). I like Adele and how accepting she is of Bill/vampires. She, Bill and Sookie were all great in the scene where Bill came over. Such a shame the same can't be said for Jason and Tara - who were annoying as hell and I wish I could've removed them from the scene. Bill was polite and nice, and I just couldn't stand how they treated him (like Adele said, "Jason, you don't need any help lookin' like a fool.").
Thankfully, then came another Sookie/Bill scene - just the two of them - where she asks him about his vampire abilities and learns that his giving her his blood heightened her senses (among other things). The bit where she eggs him on to 'glamour' her - which he then attempts - only to be get laughed in his face by Sookie (who's unaffected) was a good moment. That combined with his confused "Sookie, this is very strange." was pretty funny. But when Sookie started taking things a little far and claimed that he didn't seem like "a very good vampire", his line "I can bring you back to life." did a good job of rendering her speechless. I'm glad they didn't take forever to have the two of them kissing (and Bill was effectively creepy when his fangs came out). The music used in this scene was good too.
I applaud Dawn for tying Jason to her bed and leaving him there - the boy needed to learn his lesson. As usual, I liked Sam's interaction with Sookie, and felt sorry for him when he was actually encouraging her to read his thoughts, but she didn't want to (and that picture of a collie on his wall was a nice little clue about what's going on with him). I have to say, I was a bit put off by the ending of this episode. Those three lame vampires (especially the bald one, trying to look creepy with his tongue sticking out)? Bleh.
