Things start to heat up
lastliberal14 September 2008
There are a couple of really interesting bits in the film that have nothing to do with the story, but make it worth watching.

Many are familiar with the "God hates fags" signs and website. To see the "God hates fangs" sign was a small indication of how this fight for vampire acceptance mirrors the fight for gay acceptance.

I also found the supermarket rag on the table with the headline "Angelina to adopt vampire baby" to be hilarious.

The persona that Anna Paquin puts forth is just so sweet and sensual that anyone would want to eat her up - not just a vampire.

Ryan Kwanten is just too much as Jason. You just can't wait to see what he will do next.

The action is getting more intense, and the relationship between Sookie and Bill (Stephen Moyer) is really heating up.

Healed by Vampire's Blood
claudio_carvalho19 September 2009
Sookie is brutally beaten up by Mack and Denise Rattray in the parking lot of the Merlotte's, but Bill saves her, killing the couple. Then he gives his own blood to Sookie to heal her wounds. Meanwhile, the police see a tape that Maudette Pickens had recorded of Jason and she having sex that proves that he had not killed the woman and they release Jason. Bill asks to visit Sookie and her grandmother Adele welcomes the vampire under the hostility of Jason and Tara. Sookie feels and improvement of her sense due to the vampire's blood. Later she visits Bill without previous announcement with the names of two electricians to help him to repair his manor and she is surrounded by three evil vampires.

In this episode, there a witty and funny joke with the head-line of newspaper article highlighting that Angeline Jolie has adopted a vampire. This show discloses confidences about Bill and Sookie and she discovers the healing power of his blood; further their love is heating up. My vote is seven.

I don't think Jesus would mind if somebody was a vampire...

Warning: Spoilers
The savage beating that Sookie receives from the Rattrays at the start of this episode has to be one of the most brutal displays of violence against a woman that I've seen in a TV show. They certainly don't hold back. Sookie lies there bloodied, battered and broken - and it's kind of hard to watch. As if the Rattrays weren't loathsome enough, they then prepare to shoot the collie that comes to Sookie's rescue (fot this alone, they must die!). I'm glad Sookie saved the collie in return. It really is quite satisfying when the Rattrays get what's coming to them (although, personally I thought they got off far too easily. I mean...broken necks? Too swift a demise for them, in my opinion, given what they put Sookie through). Still, never have I been so happy to see two characters bite the dust. Thankyou, Bill, for taking care of them.

This episode was one of the only times I felt sorry for Jason at all. When he thought he'd killed Maudette Pickens - I felt a twinge of sympathy for him (and Jason was right - he's not that smart. Certainly not smart enough to commit a murder). SO glad you got killed, Maudette, given what a nasty trick that was to play on him. Honestly, I have no idea what Jason ever saw in Maudette, given that he was also with Dawn - who's definitely the better out of the two. Her greeting him when he knocked on her door ("Jason, what the f@#k?") amused me, as did Jason pointing to himself in the mirror later on when they were having sex.

Good on Sookie for asking questions before accepting Bill's blood (rather than just diving right in and drinking it). Again he asks her, "What are you?', and once more puts a slight twist on how he asks it. I liked her line to Bill (after she's confessed to him that she's telepathic and he asks her if she can hear his thoughts), "No. That's why I like you so much. I can't hear you at all. You have no idea how peaceful it is after a lifetime of "blah, blah, blah"." - but not to be outdone by her following line of, "Bill, you were just licking blood out of my head. I don't think it gets much more personal than that.". Also good was the montage of Sookie's previous 'dates' and how they went badly for her upon hearing what the guys were thinking. There's some really good chemistry going on between Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer in their scenes together.

Like in the next scene, when Bill's walking Sookie to her car and they're discussing when Bill was made a vampire. Also, Sookie's response to Bill suddenly disappearing (which seems to be a common trick of vampires) was great: "Well, that was creepy.". Basically, every scene with Sookie and Bill in this episode was a good one (I loved the way Sookie said, "Oh Bill, won't you please come in." after being informed that she had to invite him into her house before he could enter). I like Adele and how accepting she is of Bill/vampires. She, Bill and Sookie were all great in the scene where Bill came over. Such a shame the same can't be said for Jason and Tara - who were annoying as hell and I wish I could've removed them from the scene. Bill was polite and nice, and I just couldn't stand how they treated him (like Adele said, "Jason, you don't need any help lookin' like a fool.").

Thankfully, then came another Sookie/Bill scene - just the two of them - where she asks him about his vampire abilities and learns that his giving her his blood heightened her senses (among other things). The bit where she eggs him on to 'glamour' her - which he then attempts - only to be get laughed in his face by Sookie (who's unaffected) was a good moment. That combined with his confused "Sookie, this is very strange." was pretty funny. But when Sookie started taking things a little far and claimed that he didn't seem like "a very good vampire", his line "I can bring you back to life." did a good job of rendering her speechless. I'm glad they didn't take forever to have the two of them kissing (and Bill was effectively creepy when his fangs came out). The music used in this scene was good too.

I applaud Dawn for tying Jason to her bed and leaving him there - the boy needed to learn his lesson. As usual, I liked Sam's interaction with Sookie, and felt sorry for him when he was actually encouraging her to read his thoughts, but she didn't want to (and that picture of a collie on his wall was a nice little clue about what's going on with him). I have to say, I was a bit put off by the ending of this episode. Those three lame vampires (especially the bald one, trying to look creepy with his tongue sticking out)? Bleh.

An episode by the way that could have been titled "Big time sensuality"

True Blood (se1ep2: the first taste)

Week two of me professing my love for Anna Paquin. But seriously folks she is wonderful yet again and this series is looking even better in its second ep. An episode by the way that could have been titled "Big time sensuality"....the sexual tension is turned up to eleven between Sookie and Mr. Tall Dark and Undead Bill Compton aka Stephen Moyer. Also of note in this ep are the flashbacks to Sookie's past that go a long way in showing us who she is...the failed date flashbacks are awesome. Oh and I could kiss whoever is in charge of Anna's wardrobe....one word...smokin'

S1.E2 - Really Entertaining 2nd Episode! [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E2) My Live Reaction / Review for True Blood Season 1 Episode 2 ''The First Taste''. Episode 1 was good and I gave it a rating of 7.6/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Bill killed the people who attacked Sookie? So he kills people? Im sure he could beat them without killing them. So Jason didnt kill that woman while having sex. Who killed her? Bill just saved Sookie's life, that's romantic. Bill fought in the war? That's badass. Jason must be a sex addict. I think Tara likes Jason, I could be wrong though. After Sookie drunk Bill's blood her senses are sharper. Jason seems to hate Bill. Sam is so in love with Sookie. Overall this episode was really entertaining, my rating is 9/10.

True Blood:The First Taste
Scarecrow-8816 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Sookie is almost killed by the Rattrays when Bill saves her by having her feed from his blood..as rumored, the blood indeed "heightens her senses" and Sookie finds that she can smell a small piece of rotted cheese from across the room. We see that Tara carries a torch for Jason who is in an "open" relationship with waitress Dawn(Lynn Collins)..meaning they hump like bunnies but aren't necessarily in a committed relationship. Jason doesn't hide his dislike of vampires and voices his concern to Sookie about her possible attraction to him. Bill admits that vampires often stage murders as accidents and that he fed from the Rattrays while Sookie was recuperating after nearly perishing at their hands. It is established further here that vampires are looking for legal rights and a vocal critic against this proposed law, a reverend who considers them demonic, is killed(along with his family and a few others in his entourage)in what appeared to be a serious accident..this perhaps acknowledges that vampires are prepared to do whatever it takes to get the same kind of rights that mortals have. Alan Ball and company continue to elaborate on how Sookie's telepathic abilities cause tension among her friends and co-workers sometimes(when unable to focus, Sookie sometimes reads thought and responds even though it is unintentional). We also see flashbacks to when Sookie was a child and how her parents were weirded out by the thought reading gift. How this gift is perceived as an invasion of privacy, and the trouble Sookie has in controlling it really give "True Blood" another interesting angle to evolve during the series. Also, how Sookie now has other hypernatural abilities and her growing fondness for Bill should only enhance the story lines as the series continues. This episode, The First Taste, is a shining example of the obvious chemistry between Paquin and Moyer..we see their desire for each other as they walk and talk alone without the interruption of others. There's a lot said when they do not talk, when their eyes meet, and how they gaze into each others faces, the admission as their lips touch during a kiss of how they feel. William Sanderson is a greater presence in this episode as the sheriff who, like Jason, attempts to talk her out of seeing Bill "for her own good".

Establishing the vampire rules
loridonaldsonrocks21 February 2023
This episode spends quite a bit of time on Sookie and the vampire Bill, and we get to learn about how vampires work through Sookie's questioning. Pretty standard vampire stuff, they need to be invited to enter a home, super strong, hypnosis... Nothing too interesting there. We're starting to get some character development and background history, but it didn't really do much to make the characters more understandable or relatable. The episode seemed to go on for a long time since it was trying to establish the world and characters mainly through conversation, with just a few short flashbacks of Sookie. There wasn't really much going on with the plot to make me wanna keep watching, but maybe this episode was setting up some major romance or vamp action to come. Not getting my hopes up, but we'll see.

first taste had some off ingreds
jackDee-5656530 December 2020
First off I liked the episode it had some fun humor and character interactions, other than that its run time kills it, HBO is such a great network the only thing thing wrong is the episodes run longer than needed, so this episode was okay too long too much scenes that don't really mattter to the main story or the mythology of the vampire world

Redneck Twlight

This show ditches everything that was good about vampire shows and runs with cliche tropes but of dumb southerners who try to understand vampires.

Pathetically trashy sex scenes

And a special ability to hear thoughts that is annoying to listen to. Poor execution as it serves its point in one scene. But it drags forever. And often.
