. . . liar and cheat, who dragged his own mother along on his honeymoon to frustrate his more-renown bride. Spending only three of his 21 marital years with his spouse, Peary basked in an adulterous relationship and created a second family with a young teen girl North of the Arctic Circle. He then stole all the metal upon which the impoverished natives depended for survival blades and dragged six of his mistress' relatives to the U. S., where four of them suffered agonizing deaths due to his neglect and broken promise to quickly return to their homeland with better blades. Instead, he sold the skeletons of these trusting dupes for display in a museum! Like his later countryman Dick Bird--also the subject of Peabody's Improbable History--Bob made false, thoroughly debunked and disproved claims to have reached the North Pole. Obviously, Bob was a total disgrace, earning him a prominent spot in the American Hall of Shame.
