MaryAnn’s quick take…
If there is something new to be said about boxing, Bleed for This doesn’t find it. Sucks all the energy out of a story that should have been a can’t-miss. I’m “biast” (pro): don’t mind a good boxing movie…
I’m “biast” (con): …but I’m not a fan of the sport
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
If there is something new to be said about boxing in a movie, Bleed for This does not find it. If there is something new to be said about incredible true-life tales of survival, Bleed for This does not find it. Does Our Hero defy the odds? He does. Does he climb his way back to success and make an unlikely comeback that nobody but nobody could ever have imagined? You bet. Does the human spirit triumph? Of course it does.

Futurama has come to an end. It’s the fourth time that we’ve heard that, but this time it seems conclusive. The series finale of season 7 (season 6 in the UK) entitled ‘Meanwhile’, the 140th episode of Futurama’s on again, off again history, opened with the hilarious caption “Avenge Us” and had a tearfully happy ending for two of our beloved Planet Express crew members. That’s all I’ll say for now so that we can steer clear of any spoilers.
The happy ending brought the show to a sweeter and more natural ending than the three previous episodes that Groening and co. had originally expected to be the last stand: season 4′s ‘The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Play Things’, the straight-to-dvd movie ‘Into the Wild Green Yonder’, and the season 6 finale (season 5 in the UK) ‘Overclockwise’. The fact that Futurama has already had four ‘final’ episodes...

When Futurama aired its final episode the other week, devoted fans had to sit through their favourite animated show ending for what is now the third time. And even though the show had certainly dipped in quality from it’s golden era on Fox, seeing Fry and Leela sort of end up together was still an incredibly satisfying (and emotional) ending, incredibly fitting for a show that had always been as much about the characters as space jokes.
I first saw Futurama on a pre-Simpsons Channel 4, but didn’t truly appreciate until I got the DVDs how sharp the writing and affectionately drawn the characters (in both meanings of the the word) were. Watching it from the beginning hammers home how for the time it was an incredibly out there idea.

Before Futurama heads off into the wild green yonder of the afterlife, it will work Seth MacFarlane like a dog.
Well, sort of. In a brief cameo for the animated comedy’s final season, the Family Guy creator will provide the voice of Fry’s tragically loyal canine, Seymour, who was featured in a 2002 episode. “This will be Seymour’s first and only spoken dialogue,” Futurama executive producer David X. Cohen tells EW. “Since Seth voices Family Guy’s talking dog, Brian, we thought it would be funny to have him blatantly rip himself off for our benefit. As an added bonus,...

The beauty of Futurama taking place a thousand years in the future is that it can touch on the hot-button issues of the day. Or at least the hot-button issues of the last couple years, thanks to the lengthy production cycles for animation.
Thankfully, the Mayan Apocalypse of 2012 has been seen coming for a while, so the cartoon for once got a chance to be ahead of all the doom and gloom sure to hit American culture once December 21 rolls around on this week's episode, "A Farewell to Arms."
The idea of an ancient civilization, in this case the ancient Martians, predicting the end of the world is inherently silly, and there were plenty of allegorical comparisons to the panic over the 2012 Mayan apocalypse and how the predictions could be dramatically misunderstood. Except in this case, there actually was an Apocalypse-level event, and the misunderstanding almost killed a bunch of people anyway.

Good news, everyone! Not only did Futurama make its Earthican presence known at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, but series creator Matt Groening also announced the release of the Futurama Head-In-a-Jar Creator App for iPhone and iPod Touch!
Available for release on iTunes immediately after he announced it, and developed in a collaboration between Comedy Central, the producers of Futurama and Rough Draft Studios, the free App allows fans to design their own Head-In-a-Jar, just like in the cartoon!
The App allows users create their own customized character, choosing from male/female humans, robots or aliens, even customizing traits such as eyes, nose, hair, blemishes and the background. Other features include Futurama-themed accessories, such as a foil hat (seen in Into the Wild Green Yonder), Flexo’s beard, Nibbler’s antenna and a customized name plate for each head designed! A healthy start for a week of new programming begins tomorrow, with a 30 minute animated film that could serve as strong inspiration to encourage children's budding creativity and interest in film and animation. A joint project of Tate galleries and Aardman Animations, the film involved thousands of children and a few million pounds to produce.
Entitled The Itch Of The Golden Nit, the story surrounds superheroes and other fantastical characters, drawing on the original ideas, illustrations and sound effects of contributing children, and the vocal talents of comedians and performers, including David Walliams, Miranda Hart, Harry Enfield, Catherine Tate, Vic Reeves, Rick Mayall, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ralf Little, Miriam Margolyes, Lucy Montgomery, and Alexei Sayle.

The fact that it’s Memorial Day doesn’t mean that you have to hightail it to the beach. On the contrary, you may want to stay home and kick back, spend some quality time with your significant other. By which I mean of course your remote. And if that’s the case, you (and it) will no doubt be particularly interested in this list of TV marathons being run over the weekend.

Comedy nerds everywhere cheered when Comedy Central announced it was bringing 'Futurama' back to the tube. But after a series of hit-and-miss DVD movies (that also aired on Comedy Central) and talk of recasting the show's lead voice actors (luckily, that never happened), fans started feeling nervous about the relaunch of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's sharp, bitter and hilarious ode to the future.
As our own Danny Gallagher pointed out in his recaps of the show, the comeback started out on a rocky note with Groening and crew tying up the loose ends from the final DVD movie ('Into the Wild Green Yonder'). But the new season started to hit its stride around the halfway point with episodes about "robosexuality" -- the love that sprouts between a robot and a human -- and managed...

Were it not for that re-release of all the Futurama seasons encased in a giant Bender head, Volume 5 of Futurama would be the first time in about 5 years that I've had to even think about buying a season of Futurama on DVD (even if my copies are turning to dust from overuse). On December 21st, Fox is releasing the season on both DVD and Blu-ray marking the first time a season of the series has been available in hi-def. If you're not convinced that hi-def improves Futurama's already high quality animation, think again. Go check out Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder - the only one of the four Futurama movies released on Blu-ray - the colors are richer and the 3D animation looks fantastic.
For a look at the DVD and Blu-ray box art, read on...

It's Tuesday again.Let us not discuss why this is late.Yesterday, I went to my local Food Bazaar to buy beer, chips, milk and Life cereal last night as I was finishing up Ken Burns' Civil War. It's been kind of rainy here in New York for the past couple of days, so I had my polka dot umbrella, which doesn't make me look like the most masculine boy, but it's easily my best umbrella.Checking out at the local grocery, I realized I had left my debit card in my other pants and had to charge some groceries to credit. This required my ID, which got the cashier in the mostly-Latin neighborhood I live in to do a double take at my driver's license. "You're Spanish?" she asked, in a pleasantly surprised tone."Yes," I said. And she gave me a discount on beer.I don't know...

While so many of you were busy watching the "Eclipse" red carpet action last night, I was... well, I was watching that too. But after the red carpet, I flipped over to Comedy Central.
After seven long years of watching rerun after rerun, the Planet Express crew is back in New New York City to bring us all new adventures from the year 3000. Really, 3010. "Futurama" is now officially back on the air. And you know what? It's like they never left.
Back From The Wild Green Yonder
"Into the Wild Green Yonder," the last of the direct-to-dvd "Futurama" movies, ends with Fry, Leela, the Professor and pretty much everyone other major character we've come to know and love flying off into a wormhole, perhaps never to be seen again. It was a calculated decision to leave things off that way. As series creator David X. Cohen told MTV in a recent interview,...

We're now just hours away from the return of "Futurama," and in case you're a little fuzzy on where the show and its life-extending DVD movies left off, its new home has you covered.
Below you can catch up on five seasons and four movies in a little over seven minutes, thanks to Comedy Central and intrepid space blowhard Zapp Brannigan. He'll take you from Philip J. Fry's freezing at the end of the 20th century right up to the Planet Express crew's escape into a wormhole at the end of the last movie, "Into the Wild Green Yonder" -- with frequent diversions for Zapp to discuss how attracted he is to Leela.
Then check out a preview of Thursday's (June 24) one-hour premiere, in which Prof. Farnsworth explains to Fry what happened when they went through the wormhole, complete with meta-joke about the migration from Fox to Comedy Central.

Chicago – Fry, Leela, Bender, and the rest of the gang of “Futurama” take a major step forward in their return from the other side of the TV schedule with the first brand new hour of television debuting tonight on Comedy Central. Fans are understandably nervous that something may have been lost during the show’s time off. Fear not space travellers.

The saga of the return of “Futurama” has been a fascinating one. First, I think even Fox would agree that they didn’t treat Matt Groening’s clever creation with any sort of consistency, regularly axing it for sports events and barely reminding viewers that it was even on the air. When it was canceled after four seasons in 2003, the response was often “That’s still on?”

In 2003, disaster struck. After airing for four seasons and capturing the hearts of fans in the process with its incredible mix of bizarre humor and undeniable heart, Fox pulled the plug on the David X. Cohen/Matt Groening-created animated series "Futurama." Hopes were reborn in 2007 when direct-to-dvd movies were announced for later airing as a pseudo fifth season on Comedy Central. But the real coup came in June 2009, when Fox announced that Comedy Central had picked up the show for 26 all-new episodes. The new batch begins tonight, with two episodes airing starting at 10 p.m.
"I didn't see it coming seven years ago, so it's a pretty pleasant surprise," Cohen told MTV in a recent interview.

Tonight, Futurama will return from the dead for the fifth or sixth time. This is a sacred event. Five years ago, when I was rediscovering the show on Adult Swim reruns, news of Futurama’s return would have caused my brain to explode. In fact, my brain did explode back in 2007, when the show’s creators announced the production of four direct-to-dvd movies. Then I actually saw the movies…and haven’t felt so disappointed by a franchise I love since The Phantom Menace taught us all a valuable lesson about intergalactic trade routes. All of which has me wondering: When Futurama returns this week,...

We're back, baby!
So it’s old news that Futurama has been brought back from the dead and has new episodes on the way featuring the entire original cast, but what many people might not know is one critical detail: it’s back on the air this Thursday, June 24 at 10 p.m. Est on Comedy Central.
That’s soon.
Unfortunately, for our readers in Canada, little is yet known as to the scheduling of Futurama north of the border. As a show whose roots were predominantly international (as opposed to a show like, say, Family Guy, whose viewership was principally North American), this fan would expect any aversion to international release would prove less digestible to the network than, well, Pig Pink Gum “The only gum with the breath-freshening power of ham!” Nevertheless, here is the first 90 seconds of the season 6 premiere entitled ‘Rebirth’ for fans anywhere from Helsinki, Finland to Tucson,...

Good news, everyone! Futurama is coming back to television for twenty-six episodes, split over two seasons, kicking off on June 24th. The bigger news? The show won’t be on Fox, or DVDs – it’s coming to Comedy Central.
But how did the Planet Express crew end up there? Last we left them, Leela and Fry were making out on the way into a wormhole, never to be seen again (in the last DVD movie, Into The Wild Green Yonder). Well, in true “hey, we’re a cartoon back on television” fashion, the first ninety seconds or so of this season’s premiere deal with how the show came back, and how they ended up on Comedy Central.
The even better news? It’s funny. While we’re diehard fans of the show, the DVD movies occasionally left us a little cold (though we’ll say they work much better...

Good News Everybody!
Comedy Central has been very generous with the Futurama tidbits. They have been posting a new sketch, scene, character design or plot detail every day, as a lead in to the triumphant return of Futurama.
Unfamiliar with Futurama? Here is what you need to know. Futurama is the other show by The Simpsons' creator Matt Groening. The show centers on Philip J. Fry, a 20th century pizza delivery boy that accidentally gets frozen for 1000 years. He awakens in New New York, a future inhabited by robots, aliens, mutants from below the surface and animated heads in jars (including the Earthican President Richard Nixon). Fry finds himself what family he had, in a withered and aged scientist-cum-entrepreneur Professor Hubert Farnsworth, who beyond inventing such world changing devices as the smell-o-scope and the first robot to qualify for a boat loan, owns and operates Planet Express, an intergalactic package delivery service.

Professor Farnsworth reminds the temporarily-amnesiac Fry of how their spaceship passed through the Panama Wormhole in the first clip of "Futurama" season 6. The Comedy Central animation returns on screen June 24 with the episode "Rebirth" where, after the events of Into the Wild Green Yonder, all the characters will be reborn.

To anyone who thought that Futurama had bitten the shiny metal @$$ of cancellation…surprise! The next-millenium-set animated comedy is returning to the air after being dropped by Fox in 2003. (Twenty six new episodes of the show will be unveiled on Comedy Central; the first half of season 6 kicks off June 24.) EW.com checked in with executive producer David X. Cohen to find out what he and series creator, Matt Groening, have in store for us.

Gotcha! Not only is Futurama alive and well and gearing up for its new season on Comedy Central, but Matt Groening has released the first official image of the Planet Express crew!
Or at least, what's left of them.
When last we saw our favorite animated sci-fi heroes, the crew was headed for an uncertain future in a deep wormhole at the conclusion of Futurama's fourth straight-to-dvd effort Into the Wild Green Yonder, having just killed "The Dark One" and restored balance to the universe.
Must have been a bumpy re-entry, because it seems like Fry and Professor Farnsworth are the only survivors of the disaster, and we don't even wanna think about the state of our favorite electric-mucus green rocket ship.
At least we know New New York maintains a diverse population of the beheaded in Gefilte Fish jars! Or maybe it's just creative payback for that little voice cast debacle.
Or at least, what's left of them.

Jason Manford, Oliver Postgate and a whole lot of movies lead this week's TV round-up...
Geek Week TV: saving clicking finger tendons and remote batteries since 2009
In the run up to what's proving to be an Easter TV week to remember, there's a couple of promising shows to enjoy now, before the sugar shock sets in and the geeklets near you start bouncing off all available surfaces.
Comedy Rocks With Jason Manford airs tonight, Friday March 26th at 9:00pm on ITV1. It's billed as a variety show, but don't let that scare you off as the scales seem heavily tipped in the comedic direction with standup comic John Bishop and Jo Brand lined up alongside the music and other acts. We're quite happy to spend time with Mr Manford outside of his 8 Out Of 10 Cats team captain duties and are booking our spot on the settee early.

Last year the Annie Awards caused quite a stir when Kung Fu Panda swept Wall-e [1] in every category. Of course, Wall-e still went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it's interesting to note that this year, with so many great animated movies to choose from, the Annies decided to go back and honour Pixar's Up with their top prize. Needless to say, Up is now a heavy favourite at the Oscars (if it wasn't already), but how did the other categories shake down for the Annie Awards? Pete Docter also received the award for Directing, but it was The Princess and the Frog and Coraline that split many of the other categories. Personally I was just pleased to see Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach pick up the Writing award for Fantastic Mr. Fox. After the jump, you can see all of the feature film categories...

"Up" soared at the 37th Annual Annie Awards as it was named the Best Animated Feature. At the gala which was held on Saturday, February 6, Pete Docter who directed this Pixar Animation Studios' film also took home best director for animated feature prize.
Though "Up" landed the coveted prize, the big winners that night were "The Princess and the Frog" and "Coraline" which nabbed three awards each. The Walt Disney Pictures musical comedy won for Animated Effects, Character Animation and Voice Acting categories, while the Dakota Fanning-starring animation nabbed gongs from Character Design, Music and Production Design categories.

Pixar’s Up took home the top prize for Best Feature at the 37th Annual Annie Awards, an event that honors the best in animated movies and TV.
The soaring adventure is the favorite for the “Best Animated Feature” Oscar next month, especially since the Annies have predicted the winner seven out of nine times since the category was created in 2002.
Last year DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda pulled an upset over Pixar’s Wall-e, but this year the award went to the expected recepient and the only animated film nominated for “Best Picture.” In fact, Up is only the second entirely animated movie nominated for the top Academy prize since 1991’s Beauty and the Beast. It’s also nominated for original screenplay, sound editing, and musical score.

"Up" from Disney/Pixar won the top honor at the 37th Annual Annie Awards. The fantastic film received the Best Animated Feature Award beating out "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "The Princess and the Frog," and "The Secret of Kells."
(Check my interview with Annie Award-winner Pete Docter for "Up" held at Pixar Animation Studios right here)
Walt Disney Animation took home six other Annies including three for "The Princess and the Frog" and three for its television production "Prep and Landing."
Created in 1972 by veteran voice talent June Foray, the Annie Awards is considered the highest and most prestigious honor given in animation by the animation industry.
The Annie Awards is also a great predictor of the annual Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. So yes, "Up" will win that category at the Oscars!

Pixar Animation Studio's "Up" was named best animated feature, and its helmer Pete Docter was honored for direction, at the 37th annual Annie Awards for animation, Saturday at UCLA's Royce Hall.
Other big winners in the Annie feature competition included Laika's "Coraline" and Disney's "The Princess and the Frog," which won three trophies each.
Nominated for five Academy Awards, "Up" is the odds-on favorite to win the Oscar for animated feature, and is only the second animated film to earn a nomination in the best picture category. It is also nominated for best screenplay, music and sound editing Oscars.
"We always look at these as films; we take them as seriously as anyone else does in this industry," Docter -- wearing an Ellie badge on his lapel -- said of the best picture nod. "The fact that our peers are looking at this film in the same way is just fantastic.

To coincide with the good news from Fox that new episodes of Futurama are coming, we review the Blu-ray release of what once looked like the series finale, Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder.
In some respects Futurama could be considered the poor cousin of The Simpsons. Both shows were created by Matt Groening and both share the same style of animation and satirical humour. Yet, Futurama has not enjoyed the same widespread popularity as its Fox stablemate. Whereas The Simpsons (no relation) has been running for 20 seasons on that network, Futurama lasted only four (a fifth aired but was comprised of episodes that had not been shown in previous years).
Despite that relatively short run, Futurama attracted a dedicated following. This prompted the Cartoon Network, and later Comedy Central, to pick up the show for syndication. The viewing figures convinced the latter to commit to sixteen new episodes that...

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder brings the Futurama series back from the lesser performances of the second and third direct to DVD releases. When I slid the Blu-ray into my PS3 about five different thoughts flitted through my head: please be great, please be really great, please be great, please be funny, please be great. I wasn't being all that creative at the time as my mind's obsession with a suitable ending(?) to the Futurama series had been plaguing my thoughts since the third Futurama movie failed to impress. Bender's Game took stale jokes and put them into the Futurama universe. I recognized the necessity to pay lip service to a genre of nerdery that had been neglected thus far in the Futurama movies - but it had gone too far on too little material. Into the Wild Green Yonder makes no such mistake.

Chicago – Still trying to get over an Oscar hangover? There’s no better way to deflate the pomposity of awards season than with a wicked car chase. Of course, one of the best of all time hit Blu-Ray this week in the controversial Blu-Ray release of “The French Connection,” but the same studio also released another pair of movies dedicated to automobile aficionados and an animated sci-fi comedy when all the metal destruction gets too much to take.
Two of the best car movies of all time - 1971’s “Vanishing Point” and 1998’s “Ronin” - hit Blu-Ray for the first time this week and the final “Futurama” movie, “Into the Wild Green Yonder” also hit the format. All three of these titles were released on February 24th, 2009.

Akira (Blu-ray)
A landmark in both sci-fi and animation, Akira did much to popularise anime in the West when it was first released back in 1990. Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo from his own bestselling manga, it tells the story of a member of a motorbike gang in futuristic neo-Tokyo who’s kidnapped and experimented on by the military. When the tests unlock latent psychic powers, he goes on the rampage, lashing out at the world that oppressed him.
Highly influential on the likes of The Matrix. A live action version is in the works.

Expectations were perhaps unrealistically high when Fox resurrected the beloved geek favorite Futurama for the home-video market, but they’ve shrunk with each successive direct-to-dvd effort. The movies are far from embarrassing—the best of the lot, The Beast With A Billion Backs,is terrific—but after the series rose from the dead, “good” just isn’t good enough for diehard cultists. As the last of four proposed Futurama movies, Into The Wild Green Yonder could very well mark the end of the series’ animated life, so those same fans probably expect more from it than a few laughs and ...

This week we recommend the fourth and final Futurama movie (Into the Wild Green Yonder), but only for diehard Planet Express devotees; otherwise, your new release options are rotten (Sex Drive, The Haunting of Molly Hartley). Horror fans, however, have something new to cheer about (Wes Craven's original Last House on the Left Collector's Edition, Dario Argento's Four Flies on Grey Velvet), as do those with more esoteric tastes (Noah Wyle as The Librarian in Curse of the Judas Chalice and Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge).
