Netflix is getting into the retail business.
The streaming giant has unveiled today Netflix.shop, an online storefront where fans will be able to buy a wide array of products -- from apparel to toys to events and games -- inspired by their favorite Netflix series and films.
In a blog post, VP of consumer products Josh Simon said the company would “drop exclusive limited editions of carefully selected high-quality apparel and lifestyle products tied to our shows and brand on a regular basis.”
At launch, the company is introducing streetwear and action figures inspired by two anime series, Eden and Yasuke (pictured above). The company is also releasing limited-edition apparel and decorative items inspired by French spy drama Lupin, in collaboration with the Louvre museum. Netflix says it is working with up-and-coming designers on products, including Nathalie Nguyen, Kristopher Kites, and Jordan Bentley, who created the Eden and Yasuke launches.

Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Bergman Island” has been percolating for several years now, which is why many cinephiles were thrilled to hear the drama will have its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. “Bergman Island” will compete for the Palme d’Or, making Hansen-Løve one of only four women in competition at Cannes 2021. An international trailer for the film has been released, debuting the first footage of cast members Tim Roth, Vicky Krieps, Mia Wasikowska, and Anders Danielsen Lie.
“Bergman Island” centers around a filmmaking couple (Roth and “Phantom Thread” breakout Krieps) who travel to the island of Fårö, which is where Ingmar Bergman lived and died and shot scenes for iconic films such as “Through a Glass Darkly” (1961), “Persona” (1966), “The Passion of Anna” (1969), and “Scenes from a Marriage” (1972). It’s here where the couple’s relationship is tested as the line between reality and fiction starts to blur.

IFC Films has acquired U.S. rights to Mia Hansen-Løve’s Bergman Island, ahead of the film’s world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
The acquisition marks IFC’s fourth collaboration with the writer/director, on the heels of the features Father of My Children, Goodbye First Love and Things to Come.
Bergman Island centers on romantically involved American filmmakers Chris (Vicky Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth), watching as they retreat to the mythical island of Fårö for the summer. Amidst the wild beauty of the landscape where Ingmar Bergman lived and filmed his most acclaimed works, the pair hope to find inspiration for their upcoming films. As days spent separately from Tony pass by, Chris’s fascination with the island grows, and memories of her first love come to the surface. Lines between reality and fiction then begin to blur, and tear the couple further apart.

The concept of the last or only human is a classic science fiction set-up, one we most often see in the post-apocalyptic genre, which often sees a human wandering a dystopian landscape, in search for meaning and connection in a grim reality. In Eden, Netflix’s new Japanese-language original anime, we get a clever twist on the old convention: Here, humans disappeared 1,000 years prior, and Earth is populated by a few settlements of robots. These robots spend their days growing apples, an act driven by their initial creation by and for humans. When a pair of apple-harvesting robots, A37 and E92, find a human baby, Sara, they go against the rules of Eden-3, where they live, to follow their nature: to protect and care for this tiny human, even when everything they have ever been told about humanity has been framed in our species’ capacity for destruction.

Marvel projects may be drawing a slew of high-profile actors to Australia, but it seems there are also local productions inversely capable of attracting MCU talent.
Christopher James Baker has been back in his native country for the past year following more than a decade in New York, during which he starred in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and also shot the upcoming DC Universe Series, Stargirl.
He has been able to hit the ground running following his return, with roles in Stan’s eight-part mystery drama Eden, as well as Goalpost’s gold rush drama New Gold Mountain.
Baker will first be seen in the former, which is set to premiere on the streaming platform on June 11.
The Every Cloud Productions/Balloon Entertainment series centres on the disappearance of a young woman and a subsequent chain of events that serves to lay bare dark and hidden secrets within the titular coastal town.

I’m an Israeli father of two young boys here in Tel Aviv. I love them to bits. I know that across the border in Gaza there’s a Palestinian father with kids who feels the same way about his. I know we both want to protect them more than anything. Like me, I’m sure he tells them this awful conflict will be over one day, with today’s ceasefire being a welcome first step in that direction.
The rockets have been flying — thousands hurled at Israel by Hamas, the Islamic fundamentalist group hell-bent on our destruction which has masterfully managed to garner sympathy from around the world. We view it as a hijacking of the Palestinians who most of us here see as innocent victims of a terror group. A people with whom, we personally have nothing against and would love to leave with in peace, were it not for Hamas.
