At about this point in Season 2's run, the Hollywood writers' strike kicked in and showrunner Tim Kring found himself picketing his own show. With a truncated second season in view, he admitted that the opening episodes had been too slow and he needed to up the ante in terms of storytelling and to ditch the elements that were grinding the show slowly, such as Claire and Hiro's romances.
