Milestones in Cinema History: The Hustler (2007)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

This twenty-seven minute featurette can be found on the DVD and Blu-ray of THE HUSTLER and features interviews with Paul Newman, Piper Laurie, that film's editor Dede Allen, actor Michael Constantine and film historian Drew Casper. The production of the film is discussed but what's more detailed are certain aspects of the film that make it a classic. This includes the opening sequence, which Casper breaks down and discusses why the director did it this way and some of the theories are pretty interesting. From here we discuss a little of the casting including what Scott brought to the film. From here we learn about the reception that the film got when it was released and why it has remained a favorite to people over the years. There's certainly nothing ground-breaking here but fans of the film are going to enjoy it and it's always great to hear from Newman about the role.
