Life as it should be
dadpass22 April 2011
When this movie was released, the radio ads I heard led me to believe it was a 19th century mystery with Christian overtones. In reality, it was like the picture of your favorite DJ, who looks nothing like you envisioned him. My wife and I watched the DVD last night. I found it to be a well-done, well-acted movie about sharing the Gospel. Mr. McLeod is superb as the lead, with Robert Guillaume complimenting the nicely chosen cast. The props and settings are accurate and nostalgic. It made me long for the innocence of that time. With Easter approaching, we should all reconsider the claims of Jesus on our lives. This movie will cause you to do that.

Beautiful Christian film
chrisart71 May 2010
This is the Christiano brothers' best film (thus far), a lovely coming-of-age story about several youths in a sleepy upstate New York town circa 1970. In some ways it seems like the '50s, and the boys' shorts are definitely post-1985 length, but these are minor quibbles. Gavin MacLeod solidly portrays the title character, perhaps the meatiest role of his entire career, and quite likely an accurate reflection of his offscreen personality.

I saw this in the theatre, and the Gospel message is completely at odds with what the other films were selling/saying. It was a sad reminder of what this nation has fallen from.

For what could have been a pedantic, by-the-numbers evangelistic tract on film, this is instead a moving, well-crafted, tightly scripted bit of cinema. If this is any indication, we can expect even better things from the Christiano brothers in the years ahead.

Better than average religious movie
CabbageCustard6 March 2021
Fair warning: if you are thinking of watching this movie you need to know that it has a fairly heavy Christian emphasis. I say that NOT because I object to religious emphasis in movies. Not at all. It's just that most movies that seek to make a Christian impact are just completely cringe-worthy, embarrassing and definitely unrealistic - and I'm saying that as a religious person myself. It's sad but true.

This movie also wears its heart on its sleeve and has has a strong evangelical thrust. It lays it on pretty thick. What saves this from being as excruciating as most movies of this genre is the sweet subplot of a young lad trying to win the affection of a girl who has caught his eye and the genuine and moving acting of the kids playing the four boys and the girl. For once here is an American movie that casts teens as teens and not young looking twenty year olds! Amazing. The movie is better and more real because of that. It's nice to see some seasoned older actors too like Gavin McLeod and Robert Guillaume.

Despite some corny scenes, this movie is moving and engaging. My kids liked it, me and the wife did too. I recommend it.

The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry
radioflyer6829 May 2010
Here you're going to read a lot of unfair commentary on this film that is largely based on hatred of basic Christian values. That's come to be expected and that point is even made in the film. If you want to be entertained by a family friendly comedy about a kid who learns a valuable life lesson(in an unexpected way) without having to worry about the obligatory negatives of the average theatrical release then you won't be disappointed. I think you'll find as I did a great story and surprisingly professional grade acting among the young cast members and outstanding performances among the senior members. I was surprised by the quality of this film and I expect you will be too.

An unexpected gem!
allemania_ak29 August 2010
Our family watched The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry last night and each one of us thought it was an absolutely wonderful movie. We have had this film in our Netflix Watch Instantly queue ever since Netflix acquired it, but had never taken time to watch it. When we decided to watch it as a family last night, my 11-year-old son balked and said it looked like it would be "boring", but even he was brought to unexpected tears and smiles here and there throughout (as were the rest of us); and at the end he was the first to say what a great movie this was and that "we really need to buy this". The main theme that stood out to me in this film was the impact that one person could have on so many other people's lives, especially if they truly live what they profess to believe. I highly recommend this heart-felt, family-friendly, thought-provoking film.

Secrets of Jonathan Sperry
ctlv928 November 2009
I decided to give this movie a try and went in with an open mind. I usually love to watch scary movies, but some friends who I was with at the time aren't into scary movies and we went in to see Jonathan Sperry.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and really touched by this film. Gavin MacLeod did a wonderful job as well as the three boys who played friends in the movie, but I have to say one particular guy stood out in this movie for me. Taylor Boggan, the guy who played Nick the bully, did an amazing job. The emotions he displayed, especially the scene when he was in the bedroom crying to God to help him, brought out emotions in me I never knew I had. He made you feel the pain that his character was feeling, it was such a powerful scene for him to have pulled off beautifully. I know we will be seeing more of this kid, and he is going to be recognized very soon as the strong talented actor he is, he has a great future going for him.

This film whether you are religious or not, tugs at your heart, it makes you want to be a better person. It's a shame because I think a lot of people won't give this film a try because they will think of it as just some religious movie, but it is so much more than that. It is really a coming of age story about three boys, who are tormented by a bully, who is in so much pain emotionally that he takes it out on those around him. And in enters Jonathan Sperry, the one man who sees through his pain and helps him overcome it. He brings these boys together, through his love, patience and teachings, and in the end they are all a lot stronger and more forgiving of one another. This movie has everything, laughter, tears and excitement. I really am glad I decided to give this movie a try, it is well worth it!!!

a beautiful Christian film
lagudafuad31 December 2012
The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry is a subtle movie, that goes ever so smoothly that you never miss a step, it is not filled with the action, and special effects that most believes is required to make a good movie. Here is a movie that just drives off at a pace that it keeps to the very end, driving its message of love and the efforts of one man, whose life was a total testimony of what Christ expects from us when he gave us the great commission.

The movie has high ratings from critics, and that made me skeptical, wanting to stay away from it because I know that critics don't really like Christian movies because they see it as a source of propaganda. I felt, "here is a movie that they like probable the message is heavily watered down" but that was not the case in this movie, from the set go it started to preach Christ and it ended with Christ.

The movie plot is about a 75 year old named Jonathan Sperry (Gavin MacLeod) in the 70s who befriend a 12 year old boy named Dustin (Jansen Panettiere) and his friends Albert (Frankie Ryan Manriquez) and Mark (Allen Isaacson).

Jonathan during his time with the boys taught them about Christ, built them up in Christ and used them to touch the lives of those around them, from a bully to a lonely neighbor.

The movie does have some little faults; the kid actors were all not in form, because the class of acting that they delivered was way off base. The adult actors on the other hand did a fine job. Then there is the setting and the dressing, it was said that the movie was set in the 70s but it looked more like the 80s to me, but that is my view.

The movie directing was done Rich Christiano and the movie was written by him and his brother Dave Christiano. The two are the owners of Five & Two Pictures, who were also the producers of the 2002 Sci-Fi dramedy Christian movie Time Changer.

Here is a Christian movie that many like, and it is for a good reason too, it talks about Christ, and the movie leaves an image in your heart, of a man who spent his life showing the love of Christ to as much as he can

Here is a movie for you and the family.

A Little Too Much Of A Sermon Disguised As A Movie
superlo12 May 2010
First of all, I love films where faith plays an important role in the story and where it fits into the movie but is not necessarily the center of the narrative. The latter tend to come across as sermons disguised as movies or books or whatever. This film has too much of that. The only thing missing was the altar call and I don't say that to be overly critical. For being set in 1970 it still comes across as too much like Leave It To Beaver. The 'good' kids seems a little too good and the 'bad' dude seems a little too good, also. In not wanting to offend the 'church' audience they sanitize it to the point it doesn't seem real. The bullies I remember used language that offended and other gestures that conveyed less than holy thoughts. Even good kids didn't always have it together or behave appropriately all the time. While the acting is pretty decent and it has warm fuzzies, it just doesn't come across as a realistic portrayal of the way life happens even to those whose faith is a priority in their life. Is it a waste of time? No, it has its merits and there are several meaningful lessons to be considered by viewers. Many will be inspired by the message of the film. There is nothing wrong with the movie, it's just that I would love to see people of faith concentrate on developing great stories where faith fits naturally into the story instead of developing a message and trying to fit it into a movie. There is a difference and the difference is between a realistic portrayal of life and what we would like to imagine life to be like. This is a film that has a message but ultimately it will probably 'preach to the choir'.

Highly Recommend This Film
CodeManBob18 September 2009
I saw a pre-release version about two months ago. As a fan of movies with car chases, explosions, and superhuman exploits, I did not expect to really get into this movie.

The story deals with the relationships between characters in a small town in 1970 and feels like a coming-of-age movie as a young man and his friends deal with a childhood crush on a young lady. The boy-meets-girl subplot is a slight of hand before the real plot unfolds. And the resolution of one of the other subplots is the final coup de grace of the film.

I found the film moving and well worth watching...again.

The film opens today in limited release. My family and I are going to see it.

Avoid unless you are a religious extremist.
cjavery119 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I'd prefer to have seen Davey and Goliath. At least the threat of Hell would not have come into play.

Comments about propaganda are spot on.

This type of heavy handed religious syrup promotes a blind sense of superiority that has caused more harm than good in the world for centuries. Let's all go on a religious crusade. Look where that has taken us in the world today.

Selling religion to kids with lemonade and cake is a pretty lame way to deliver a partially good message. Even so, the "screenplay" is pathetic.

Why can't we learn to keep religion in the church amongst the flock? Aren't these many of the same "worshipers" that burn books and control freedom of thought?

Great message. Wonderful plot.
debrastevens4526 January 2011
Heart-warming and funny. A golden nugget and light-spirited. Great message to grasp and lesson to be learned. Definitely one to add to my collection. Not your usual movie about bullies, and the secrets of an aged man. This movie is filled with lessons, teachings, messages and warnings. However, there is one overall hidden positive message/lesson that I wonder if anyone has or will notice, between "Dustin" and "Tanya". I really enjoyed this movie and recommend it. Actually thought about using it for a bible study or my own personal teaching for myself. I know I could get a lot more out of this movie than what I have already watching it 5x so far. Unfortunately anything without explicit scenes or tainted by the world's cynical view of everything is very rare in this day in age. Acting is mediocre, but if that's all one gets out of this movie, than sorry but you really wasted your own time with this one.

A coming of a age film with a serious message
rigovega6 March 2019
I like films like this. They are so simple, and yet, they have potential to leave a long lasting impression on the viewer. As I watched, I couldn't help but notice similarities to other movies(The Sandlot, Stand by Me) that also touch the subject of growing up. The difference here is the message the movie wants to convey.

If you enjoy family movies and are not bothered by the Christian message, this is a great movie.

I just threw up in my mouth
etaggart20 March 2010
Words can't express ... let's just say "Kirk Cameron loved it!" That's enough for anyone to stay far away from this film.

But for deeper consideration - if you're the one of the few mind-washed true believers who wants to support faith-based film-makers, please put your money somewhere else. Communicating a strong message about one's faith is fine, but please find some writers who can write and directors who can produce more than simple god-is-great cardboard.

On the other hand, throw your money down these types of rat-holes and keep self-feeding on your limited community! Eventually funding will evaporate and we won't have to be subjected to such cruel celluloid.

Yes - I saw a prescreening - I was tricked into it and nearly duct-taped to my seat to see it through to the end because "I needed to hear it's message." Sheesh! If we're not intelligent enough to seek our own insights about the beauties of life, a film like this will destroy the last few brain cells left.

I'd rather watch Love Boat reruns - at least I'd then get to enjoy the antics of Isaac, that wacky bartender.

A beautiful little film that sadly few will see
dtucker869 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I went to see this film today out of curiosity. I figured that I was going to have a good laugh at it when I read that Gavin MacLeod was the star of it. I didn't think I could take him seriously in a role like this because I always think of him as Captain Stubing on The Love Boat. MacLeod became a born again Christian in real life and making this film was a real labor of love for him. I came to scorn and left to rejoice. I had a very pleasant surprise because this is a beautiful film. Its so sad that it wont even be a footnote in the 2009 box office history. People who are not as brilliant as I am will make fun of it and miss its very important message. It has only limited release and when I went to see it, I was the ONLY one in the whole theatre. It is a real pleasure seeing a film like this because Hollywood has long had a jaded attitude about religion. In other words, whenever they make a film about it they always show the religious person as crazy, corrupt or both. Thinking back over the years, I can only name The Passion Of The Christ as a film that showed religion in a favorable way. People may condemn this film for being preachy, but I loved it. It had such a powerful message and Gavin MacLeod gave an awesome performance. He brought Jonathan Sperry to life and you loved this wonderful old man who had such love in his heart. I can think of no other actor who could have done such a brilliant job and I say give Gavin MacLeod the Oscar! Sadly this will never happen. I also wanted to praise the young actors in the film, they all did a great job even the one playing Nick the bully. I loved the part where Jonathan reached Nick and made him realize the cause of his meaness. I wanted to particularly praise a young actor named Jansen Panettine who played Justin the lead kid. He is a real acting prodigy and I predict a great future for this young man! I kept wondering when he was going to work up the nerve to ask that girl for a date and I was angry at that other waitress for throwing his note away. Watching the three boys and the typical kid problems they went thru sort of reminded me of Stand By Me. I just loved everything about this film from the way they faithfully created the "look" of the seventies (when people only tipped fifty cents!) to the beautiful musical score, the powerful message and the awesome work of everyone involved. If I had my way, this film would have gotten top billing everywhere. SPOILER ALERT, I knew that Mister Sperry would die in the end of the film and Jansen Panettine did a great job showing the grief this boy feels over his beloved friends death. I know that people may mock me for saying this but I feel I am a better person for seeing this film.

Amazing
RNHunter1 October 2009
This movie is amazing. In many ways today it is more scary than the saw movie series and I for one cannot believe it was even made. It is a wholesome movie that sometimes focuses on people being nice to each other.

It should sometimes surprise us that a wholesome movie with some religious content makes us more uncomfortable at least in the movie beginnings than the slasher movies or saw movies or the like. We have been programmed I believe to think that movies like this are square or out of date, or just not cool or with it. So there is a tendency to want to hide your face at the start of the movie and slink to the door hoping no one will see you.

But if you brave it out, and yes, you can even hold hands in the scary parts, you might find something unique. You might find the movie touching, and you might even want to cry a little, yes, even if you are a male. And at the end you might ask, why is it again that we are so afraid to be nice to other humans or watch movies that show that? Maybe if we give it a chance, and this movie a chance, being nice to each other might just catch on.

It's nice to see a quality family film
user-604-4216412 June 2010
This movie was very well done indeed. Inspiring, convincing, well acted and great for all ages. The film and sound quality are A+ I wish more movies of this genre were made using the high standards used for this film. I was delighted to see Gavin MacLeod(from the Love Boat) and Robert Guillaume. I grew up in the 70's and this movie brought back some of my fondest memories as I'm sure it will for so many others. There is one very emotional scene that parents of children under 8 should be present for but other than that, this movie has the potential to inspire anyone from 8 to 120. Movie tip: forget the popcorn; bring tissue, lots of it.

One humble opinion about a well-intentioned movie
inyourimage2 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I thought a lot about what I would say regarding this movie while driving home tonight. First, know your reviewer. He does not claim to be Christian, though he strives to be Christ-like. He has been baptized at least 4 times in various denominations, used to be a Church officer in a Fundamentalist Baptist Church, and is fairly well-read and well-versed in the Bible, as well as in many other variously consistent and seemingly divergent spiritual points of view. He has also studied politics, psychology and philosophy at the graduate level. He takes an eclectic approach to the study of the Divine in the Spirit of Matthew 7:1. Yet by definition, I must judge to comment on this movie, so without further ado, I descend into the paradox of life to share my opinion.

I would say about 95% of this movie delivered a message that is consistent with Truth and enlightened understanding, based on the Christian ideal of being Christ-like (Love God, Love your neighbor). Yet, there is one particular scene that suggests that those who do not accept 'Jesus' as their Lord and Savior are spending eternity in agony (i.e. Hell). In some ways, this fear-based approach spoiled the movie for me. "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear" (1 John 4:18). The Bible says "The Kingdom of God (Heaven) is within you." Well, so is Hell. Heaven and Hell are states of Life, not death, states of one's inner being, and Salvation is ALWAYS possible. Why? Because "With God, all things are possible." In fact, according to scripture, "Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me" (John 12:44). In the end, "Death sets all men free" (Faust). That is if we really want to call it death - Remember, all we are is energy and matter, both of which are different manifestations of the same thing (according to Einstein), and neither of which can be created nor destroyed per the first law of thermodynamics. In other words, we've always been here, and we're always going to be here, in one form or another. But, it is still a good clean movie with a well-intentioned message. Of course, if you disagree with anything I have said, then you are judging. If you think anyone is going or has gone to hell when they die, then you are judging. And if I think you are judging then I too am judging. Boy, its a vicious circle, let me tell ya. I guess "wisdom is what's left when we run out of personal opinions."

Unrealistic
gonefishing88886 June 2013
And dripping with, drenched in, and hopelessly mired in Protestantism. I didn't make it more than 45 minutes into the film, though the graveyard scene had 'cult!' screaming in my head.

I can just picture this old man being arrested for that--taking three tweens into a graveyard, leaning over behind each kid, and saying into their ears--in grand ghoulish fashion--find Jesus, you're gonna die. Creepy. All the little hairs on my arms stood up and quivered in unison. I'm Orthodox, and I'm sure Orthodox and Catholics alike will run screaming up the aisles of any theater that would show this film. It's horrible.

My library had it, and I checked it out. This kind of film with its deranged content has no place on the shelves of a public library.

As this movie is labeled "Christian," I should be able to speak in those terms. The whole 'moral' of the story is Born Again-ism, which has no Biblical base and propagates heretical teachings. John 3:7 does not indicate that there is a whole ritual or even formal process for being 'born anew,' that there is a magical phrase involved--if there was, the Bible would have told us--or that any man or church holds the gate key. It's something between God and that one man, and has to be witnessed by no one. And it's not supposed to be scripted by other men.

The main reason is it's dependent upon the utterance of this made-up phrase which appears nowhere in the Bible. Proof? Orthodox and Catholics have all asked Jesus into their hearts in their own way, at every single liturgy, and yet are not recognized as 'saved' by any of the false churches that propagate this heresy. Protestant churches put themselves between men and God.

Churches script this phrase--that means it's not coming from the heart. It's also not said in worship but rather to summon the favor of a deity. That means it's an incantation--also known as a charm or a spell. And it's witnessed by members of the church. God needs man to witness whether another is 'saved'? So man administers it. Satanic.

You shouldn't be able to label a thing 'Christian' if it contains false teachings, and this movie is absolutely dripping with them.

one of the best movies i've seen
threeace77728 September 2012
I just got movie from my aunt and this has been the most enjoyable movie of this year. I has a strong teaching message with a very good story line with young kids and old men. I have never written for a movie before and this one really compelled me to do so since it changed the way I think and deal with stuff in my life. I realized that movies at times are not just for fun but to leave you with a message which can help you in directions of your life. well this movie just does about the same. the cast is simple and dialogs really have a meaning hidden which want you to watch more and learn. the classic American theme is presented which is different than movies out today you really don't get to see much of those today. I highly recommend this movie to any age group.

Not bad, but not good.
U8RU48627 May 2011
Just watched this film with my sister and her kids. Although there are some interesting moments and for the most part the acting is good. This is, as others have commented, a faith picture. Most of the reviews for this film on IMDb are planted reviews by people who were involved in the making of the film. Just click on their names, most of them have reviewed one film.. this film. Others have cutesy names like RadioFlyer68, which I guess is supposed to make you think "Hey I liked Radio Flyer, maybe I'll like this movie too."

Truth is TSOJS isn't really that bad from a movie stand point, it looks good, it's well acted, and like I said it has it's moments. Overall it's no better or worse than many of the afterschool specials of the 80's. But as at least one other commenter noted it's major flaw is that it's a faith picture, where nothing ever goes wrong, the bad guys aren't really that bad, and everything in life is solved by prayer. I was able to suspend disbelief for most of the film, but when it got to the end and the "secret" was revealed I laughed out loud.

A Film that Most Grammar Kids Can Relate To
California_Girl_205829 August 2022
I looked up Jonathan Sperry (1895-1970) on the Internet, this is what I found: " It's based on the true story of Jonathan Sperry (1895-1970), who was used by the Lord to spearhead a revival among several teenage boys in a small town, in 1970." I added this movie dvd to my Collection of Christian Movies. See my "Christian Films" on IMDb website. We loved this movie! Towards the end of the movie, there's a twist that I did not see coming. The black guy who played Mr Barnes, (he played "Benson" in a tv show), was really good in this film. Between Jonathan Sperry (Gavin Macleod) and Mr Barnes, made this movie. Hollywood NEEDS to make more of these for millions of Christians, with NO junk (because true Christians don't want sex or nudity of any kind. Movies have to be like this one, with NO junk.

For Real?
bkoganbing6 August 2018
Upon watching this film which has Gavin MacLeod in the title role, Robert Guillame as a grumpy neighbor and absolutely no one else you would know, I hit the internet to see if one Jonathan Sperry 1895-1970 actually existed. I found lots of commentary but no article in something like Wikipedia or other sources talking about a real person. I see the credits list nothing based on a biography or autobiographhy. So what are the brothers Christiano handing us here.

The problem with a lot of Christian filmmaking is many times it exists in a vacuum. That's a problem not limited to religious themed movies either. In this case it is set in 1970 when all kinds of history I well remember from the time was going on. Not a single reference to anything happening in the real world is made.

The story is how a kindly old Christian man played by MacLeod sort of organizes an unofficial Sunday School in his living room for the neighborhood and the impact he has on them. The coda has them all leading exemplery Christian lives in 2008 when this film was released.

Did the protagonist exist or his disciples? We are left to wonder. For the evangelical they will not question it.

It's not a bad bit of filmmaking. MacLeod and his young disciples give good performances. But adding that coda on to make it real is intellectually dishonest and the Christiano brother know it.

For the church audiences only.

Pancakes and Syrup

A bit sweet but filling.

This is a faith based film that is set in 1970. As a child of 14 growing up in a small town in 1970 I found the scenes, clothing and language authentic to the period and that was what was most entertaining to me. The story was simplistic, and uncomplicated but entertaining. As a child growing up in that era and being part of a church going family much of it was familiar. The polite talk and genteel and caring way people dealt with each other was reminiscent of my childhood and a great escape from the crude, crass and lurid entertainment in vogue today. I do wish it had a more dynamic story.

Mr Sperry reminds me of two men in my life who were very much like him in the way he went out of his way to bring young boys to Christ. Although I fell from the path many times in my life their memories always urge me to get back on it.

As a former soldier, biker club president and self employed businessman my life and faith walk is much more complicated with many more challenges but the simplicity of this story reminds me of a simpler time and re-enforces my resolve to be the man I aspire to be. Although I have seen much of the seedier and cruder part of life in my day the two men who made that investment in me as a boy have kept me in Christ's fold.

This is a truly remarkable story! I highly recommend it to people who enjoy family movies. If you want to see a great Christian movie, see this! While I was watching the movie, I thought to myself, "Nice, but not real." SPOILER POINT --> It is not until the end of the movie you find out that it is a TRUE STORY! Look up 'Jonathan Sperry' as I did, & see more about him.
