May has only just arrived, and it’s already heating up at Hulu! Dozens of new titles have moved in for the new month, with some of streamer’s biggest hits landing on the platform during its first weekend, including Season 3 of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s “Welcome to Wrexham” and Season 5 of “The Kardashians,” but Hulu will be adding major titles all month long, from the premiere of the coming-of-age comedy film “Prom Dates” to the streaming debut of last year’s psychological thriller “Eileen.”

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. It's been more than 10 years since the world was subjected to the last "Scary Movie" sequel, but as is the case with any famous horror movie villain, it's practically impossible to keep this series down forever. And now Paramount Pictures plans to breathe new life into this particular franchise. The studio will be teaming up with Miramax to resurrect the "Scary Movie" franchise with a brand new installment. Production begins this fall, and the film will be in theaters in 2025.
Variety reports that producer Neal H. Moritz, who is best known for producing the "Fast and Furious" movies for Universal, will be producing this new iteration. Moritz was not directly associated with any of the previous five "Scary Movie" films, but interestingly, he did produce a couple of horror flicks that were parodied in those early versions, including "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Urban Legend." Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Brett Goldstein has been rightfully riding the "Ted Lasso" wave, as the series has become one of the pillars of AppleTV+. While it's not exactly his first foray in the industry, the show has certainly boosted his career, along with two back-to-back Emmy wins for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. In the midst of playing the temperamental Roy Kent, Goldstein has also been working on a number of projects, with one of them being another series for Apple with "Ted Lasso" co-creator Bill Lawrence called "Shrinking." It stars Jason Segel as a grief-stricken therapist who adopts a new form of communication with his clients by forgoing the profession's ethical niceties and telling them exactly what's on his mind.

Tales From The Box Office: Meet The Spartans, One Of The Worst-Reviewed Movies Ever, Was Still A Hit
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Spoof movies have been a staple of comedy for decades. For as long as popular cinema exists, there is an argument to be made that somebody should be there to send up the popular genre of the moment. Perhaps the greatest of all time in this department were David and Jerry Zucker, aka the Zucker brothers, who were behind such comedy masterpieces as "Top Secret," "Ruthless People," and, most importantly, "Airplane!"
Unfortunately, the spoof movie took a pretty rough turn in the 2000s largely thanks to the success of "Scary Movie," a send up of the slasher craze that was reignited by "Scream" several years earlier. The film was a big hit and spawned several sequels and, before getting massive rewrites after being sold to Dimension Films,...

October is here, which means a bevy of new titles available to watch on HBO and HBO Max. First and foremost, however, we have the highly anticipated “The White Lotus” Season 2, which debuts on Oct. 30 on HBO and will be streaming on HBO Max at the same time. New location, new characters (save for Jennifer Coolidge from Season 1), same music.
Also new this month is the docuseries follow-up “The Vow: Part Two,” further exploring the inner sanctum of Nxivm, which debuts on Oct. 17 on HBO and is streaming on HBO Max the same night. There’s also “Avenue 5” Season 2 on Oct. 10 and the new Chip and Joanna Gaines series “Fixer Upper: The Castle” on Oct. 14 (that one will also debut on Magnolia Network and discovery+ at the same time).
Other noteworthy additions this month include library titles like “Nightcrawler,” “The Witch,” “Terms of Endearment” and the underseen comedy gem “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.
The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.
Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

(We’ve got some major spoilers for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in this article)
A “Star Wars” movie can only do so many callbacks before it starts to feel like a parody of itself. We saw that happen with “Solo: A Star Wars Story” last year, and it happened again in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which takes its references to the original trilogy bit too far when it trots out the “largest fleet the galaxy has ever seen” — a fleet that happens to be made up entirely of Death Stars.
Ok so let’s talk about this. At the very beginning of the movie, the Emperor (Ian McDiarmid) reveals that he has a giant fleet of Star Destroyers that he’d kept hidden under the ice on Exegol for who knows how long. If Kylo Ren proves a suitable successor to Palpatine’s Sith legacy then...

Audiences leaving this summer’s laugh-out-loud comedy Girls Trip (out on DVD, Blu-ray, and On Demand today) may have walked away with a crush on breakout star Tiffany Haddish, but the 37-year-old comedian walked away with a sea of new friends — including costars Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, and Queen Latifah.
It was a shock for Haddish, who worried their bond would turn into one of those “professional relationships” where actors act cool on a project but no one picks up the phone after filming wraps.
“That’s happened to me so many times, but not with these girls,” Haddish gushed to People.

Aside from even sounding slightly smutty, the spoof movie genre has, of late, been sullied by (five!) Scary Movies, Meet The Spartans and - oh, the irony - Disaster Movie. Transitory, devoid of wit and with the lowest common denominator in their crosshairs, these movies aimed for the tittering teenager, the cheap thrill-seeker and the perpetually stoned.
Perhaps the above seems like a sweeping generalisation, but it’s with good cause. Where these movies and even the term spoof itself have since been eschewed, there remains a series of films which occupy a place of fondness in the heart of - including yours truly, obvs - many a film fan: the Zaz movies.

After naming Alfonso Cuarón the best director of the 21st century, Metacritic has gone ahead and averaged out filmmakers’ Metascores to name the worst directors since 2000. As with the first list, filmmakers must have made at least four movies in the last 17 years to be eligible — meaning that Tom Six (“The Human Centipede”) and Dinesh D’Souza (“Hillary’s America”) don’t qualify despite the fact that they’re far from critical darlings.

As she bursts into the spotlight with her breakout role in Girls Trip, it’s hard to picture Tiffany Haddish as anything but a born comedy star. But her road to success has been a harrowing one.
As her mom fought mental illness, Haddish was placed in foster care as a child. It wasn’t until a social worker pushed her to attend a comedy camp that she discovered her passion for performing.
Now, the actress, 37, is starring alongside Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith in the new comedy Girls Trip —playing the wildest member of a tight-knit crew of college girlfriends.

Hold on to your knickers, another Hangover-inspired film based on the ‘fairer’ sex is about to gracelessly hit our screens in Girls Trip. Judging from the newly released trailer it isn’t far off the upcoming Rough Night, except there are no accidentally dead male stripper in sight.
Do you fancy watching Jada Pinkett Smith releasing her bowels while suspended from mid-air onto a gazing crowd, or even four feisty women getting high on Absinthe and causing an all out brawl in a dance-off in the middle of a club? Well, that’s what you get as the four lifelong friends decide to get away for the weekend and relive their younger days as potty mouths take hold as well as their raging sexual hormones. Oh, these ladies are nasty, lively and horny and slightly offensive when one declares “I’m getting white girl drunk” – well, this...

As the Epic Movie team announce they have Star Wars in their sights, might we have a chat about Mel Brooks' Spaceballs, amongst others?
Readers of this site may have read last week's news that there's to be a new Star Wars spoof. This film comes from the team who brought us Date Movie, Epic Movie, and apparently something called The Starving Games which blissfully passed me by. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Selzer make relatively cheap movies that, despite critical maulings, tend to make money at the box office. When I worked at a cinema, an eleven year old boy went to see Meet The Spartans three times, proclaiming it the best film he had ever seen.

Star Worlds Episode Xxxive=MC2: The Force Awakens The Last Jedi Who Went Rogue goes into production this year.
Whenever the Golden Raspberry Awards roll around, it’s a continual disappointment that they tend to focus on big movies, sometimes ambitious ones, that failed for one reason or another. What they don’t tend to go for are genuinely awful films, such as the assortment of terrible spoofs from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. These include, but are not limited to, Epic Movie, Meet The Spartans and Vampires Suck.
Now, cheerily, Friedberg and Seltzer are turning their attention to Star Wars, with a spoof entitled Star Worlds Episode Xxxive=MC2: The Force Awakens The Last Jedi Who Went Rogue.

After winning some goodwill as two of the half-dozen screenwriters responsible for Scary Movie, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer spent the next seventeen years turning that success into a series of increasingly terrible parody movies such as Epic Movie, Meet The Spartans and Disaster Movie. There have been many spoof films made for popular/successful films. For 300 there was Meet the Spartans and Scream had Scary Movie. Chinese film Mad Shelia is not a spoof, it's a full-on knockoff of Mad Max, copying the diesel punk esthetic of the cars, costumes, and even its poster. Mad Shelia is not a complete carbon copy and has a female protagonist, but what she eventually wears pushes Shelia into the grindhouse formula of "babes and boobs."

If a film gets a Cinemascore of B or C, it's often classed as a disappointment. But what is a Cinemascore?
The process of marketing a movie is now an operation that lasts many months across all sorts of media, from bus stop posters to social media campaigns, all in pursuit of making sure the movie makes an impact in its opening weekend. Tracking and analytics can give an indication of how audiences are responding before the movie even hits cinemas, but it's only in that opening weekend, once they've actually seen the movie, that you can get a more accurate read on public opinion.
Box office aside, one way in which Hollywood's studios reads public response after release is Cinemascore, the Las Vegas-based market research firm which conducts nationwide exit polls. Billed as “Hollywood's Benchmark”, the company's researchers gathers information from filmgoers and the results, expressed as letter grades,...

I feel like it’s been a long time since a decent spoof movie has come out. Check out this list of crap that’s come out in the last decade: Disaster Movie, Superhero Movie and Meet The Spartans for starters. And before that it was Epic Movie, Date Movie, My Big Fat Independent Movie, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and The Comebacks. Personally I miss the spoof movie. When it’s done right it’s a thing of beauty. You take one situation a bit too far. You embellish a character just enough that it’s funny to laugh at. But one thing

The oddly-monikered upcoming comedy Keanu stars Jordan Peele (Wet Hot American Summer, Bob’s Burgers), Keegan-Michael Key (Vacation, BoJack Horseman), Tiffany Haddish (New Girl, Meet The Spartans), Method Man (The Fast And The Furious, 8 Mile), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, Contraband), Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights, Anger Management), Nia Long (Are We There Yet?, Big Momma’s House) and Will Forte (American Dad, 30 Rock) and directed by Key & Peele director Peter Atencio.

Despite Howard The Duck's status as one of the worst films of all-time (although like everything I'm sure it has its fans; I once met a guy whose favourite film was Meet The Spartans. This laugh-a-minute spoof centres around a not particularly smart or streetwise undercover cop, Lucas White (Alex Ashbaugh), who’s never driven a manual car before, but somehow still manages to infiltrate Vin Serento’s (Dale Pavinski) La gang of illegal street racers. They are Superfast! and they are a little furious; watch as they plot to double-cross La crime kingpin, Juan Carlos de la Sol (Omar Chaparro), who hides his cash in Big Ass Tacos establishment downtown. The gang’s outrageous plan is as daring as it is ridiculous and will see them towing the whole damn restaurant at crazy speeds.
Along for the Superfast! ride is Vin’s slap-dash crew made up of assorted members including; his girlfriend Michelle (Andrea Navedo), who maybe appreciates a beautiful woman even more than Vin, and his sister Jordana (Lili Mirojnick), who finds Officer White’s fondue-eating, face-licking first date irresistable. The instant I heard about 31 Days of Horror, I knew I wanted to write about Bigfoot movies. The idea came to me so quickly that it seemed to exist almost without genesis, as if I had somehow plucked the idea from some endless, ageless chthonic crypt populated with nothing but amorphous spirits built of mostly-forgotten esoteric genre-pictures wandering the non-Euclidean cyclopean masonry of the mythical grindhouse of history. The idea seemed so perfect- and so in my wheel house- that when it came time to actually write the thing I was struck with the confusion that had gripped so many of my friends that I had told about the idea. “Why do you want to do that?” was the second most popular question, right after, “Are there four Bigfoot movies worth talking about?” and while I knew the answer to the second (a resounding yes, hence why you’re reading...

After last week’s news about Netflix securing The Blacklist for a record fee, a similar story came to light this week concerning the pre Batman prequel series Gotham. Now rather than getting it day and date after Us broadcast as per Breaking Bad and From Dusk Till Dawn, Gotham’s entire run will just arrive on Netflix after it’s finished its TV broadcast. Worse news is that this means you have to wait for Channel 5 to get their finger out and schedule it on one of their three channels and then muck it around the schedule just to confuse you further and for it to finish its run there. Kind of takes the wind out the sails doesn’t it? I wouldn’t expect to see Gotham on Netflix until this time next year at best but we will see.

Few movie genres date with as much fluctuating unpredictably as comedy. What is hilarious to one person is humourless to the next. What is daring and boundary-breaking to one will just be in poor taste to the other. Some comedies are so reliant on contemporary social mores that the laughs are whittled away over time. Does anyone really still think that Will Hay’s comedies are hilarious, or Abbott & Costello’s, say?
The maturation process whereby movies pass through opprobrium, obscurity, rediscovery and reassessment is especially tortuous for comedies. A joke has to be pretty strong to withstand thirty or forty years of scrutiny, and the film must withstand repeated viewings and still retain the ability to amuse. I can’t imagine anyone, not even the people who made it, will remember Epic Movie or Meet The Spartans in 2044.

Filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the duo behind critically reviled spoofs like "Date Movie," "Epic Movie," "The Starving Games," "Meet The Spartans" and "Vampires Suck," have setup their next project.
The pair will co-write and direct "Who The F#@k Took My Daughter," this spoof aiming mostly at the Liam Neeson-led "Taken" film series.
In the spoof, Ryan Miller is a tough, no nonsense, black leather jacket-wearing type whose daughter is kidnapped. He sets out to hunt down the abductors and rescue her. Peter Safran will produce.
The pair's previous films have grossed a total of $350 million in worldwide box office thus far, though their two most recent films - "The Starving Games" and "Best Night Ever" - were bombs which only made a few million each.

Coming off a successful career in television and two smaller pictures (The Producers in 1968 and The Twelve Chairs in 1970), Mel Brooks took a chance on a western comedy. This was before the days of Airplane! and The Naked Gun, decades before Scary Movie, and a generation of time (and quality) from Meet the Spartans and A Haunted House. Brooks broke all sorts of social and decency taboos with Blazing Saddles, from the subversive racial commentary to the orchestra of cowboy farts around a campfire. Blazing Saddles turns 40 this year, which makes it as good of a time as any to look back on the production with Mel Brooks himself. The commentary on the original Blu-ray release comes from the initial DVD release back in the late 1990s, but it still has a lot to say about this comedy classic. Best Night Ever is essentially a female-oriented version of The Hangover, written and directed by the men--yes, surprisingly, men--behind Epic Movie, Date Movie and Meet the Spartans, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. If you like the kind of crass, derivative humor that Friedberg and Seltzer have made their fortunes recycling, you might enjoy this movie chronicling the misadventures of sweet bride-to-be Claire, her uptight older sister Leslie, her loyal loose cannon of a best friend Zoe, and loopy new pal Janet as they embark on a bachelorette party trip to Las Vegas. After a credit card mishap means that they’re unable to pay for the expensive, glamorous hotel suite they reserved in the heart of the Vegas strip, they’re forced to shack up in a seedy motel instead. The night only spirals further downward into the criminal underworld from there, including a mugging at gunpoint, a jello wrestling scene,...

While it didn't come close to matching its predecessor, 300: Rise of An Empire still managed to dominate the weekend with over $45 million. Also opening this weekend, Mr. Peabody & Sherman became the latest DreamWorks Animation movie to disappoint at the domestic box office.Playing at 3,470 locations, 300: Rise of an Empire's $45.03 million debut was off 36 percent from the original 300, which opened on the same weekend in 2007. Adjusting for ticket price inflation and 3D premiums, Rise of an Empire sold roughly half as many tickets. Still, it was a step up from other comparable titles like G.I. Joe: Retaliation ($40.5 million), 10,000 B.C. ($35.9 million), Wrath of the Titans ($33.5 million) and Immortals ($32.2 million).Rise of an Empire was never expected to match the original 300 at the domestic box office. While marketing did a solid job positioning the movie as a revenge tale, the story just wasn't as compelling this time around. Also, the...

Thursday Update: 300: Rise of an Empire earned $3.3 million from late Thursday showings. That's a step up from G.I. Joe: Retaliation ($2.2 million) and is significantly higher than Wrath of the Titans ($1 million at midnight). This suggests that a $40 million weekend is a pretty safe bet for the 300 sequel.Forecast: Seven years after 300 ruled the box office, a sequel finally arrives in theaters this weekend. While Rise of an Empire isn't going to come anywhere close to that movie's $70 million debut, it should still be mighty enough to take first place ahead of DreamWorks Animation's Mr. Peabody & Sherman. In March 2007, 300 reached theaters with fairly modest expectations: its cast was largely unknown at the time, and director Zack Snyder's only previous movie was the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake ($59 million). Its mix of unique visuals and high-stakes storytelling proved to be an appealing combination, though, and it wound up setting...

With major releases like Divergent, Mr. Peabody & Sherman and 300: Rise of An Empire, the box office should see a bit of an uptick this March. Both should open over $30 million, though it's likely that Mr. Peabody has the edge in the long run.In March 2007, 300 became a surprise box office sensation: the movie grossed over $210 million in the U.S. and turned director Zack Snyder in to one of Hollywood's hottest big-budget filmmakers. Unfortunately, the movie had a fairly definitive ending, which made it difficult to immediately crank out a sequel.Seven years later, audiences are finally getting that sequel, though box office prospects don't seem nearly as...

"Meet the Spartans, a society built on reason, sit-ups, and child abuse." The guys at Screen Junkies have done it again. With their running series of "Honest Trailers," they mock the flaws of some of Hollywood's biggest movies. And while the results might rattle the cages of fans, they are nonetheless hilarious. For their 50th entry in this web series, Screen Junkies have taken on Zack Snyder's 300, from its over-the-top machismo to its nonsensical blend of fact and fiction, and its male-to-female nipple ratio. In many ways, 300 has aged into an easy target. The look that was so groundbreaking back in 2006 has since been endlessly copied in movies, commercials, and Instagram. The yelling--in a Scottish accent--seems downright silly out of context. Its growly and ardent masculinity becomes homoerotic. And I mean, "mutant Persian goat men?" That just never made sense.
