Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron have gotten to usher in a new era of action thanks to their efforts from both 87Eleven and 87North productions with their respective films, John Wick and Atomic Blonde. Both films aimed to combine the chaos and extended sequences of gunplay action with raw, gritty martial arts in a stylized manner. Additionally, Seth Rogen had dabbled a bit in crossing over into action with Pineapple Express and The Green Hornet with various responses.
It’s recently been reported by industry insider, Daniel Richtman, that Universal is rumored to be making Spy House. Spy House is set to star Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen in a mystery film where the plot involves, “When a group of spies go to a safe house after a job gone wrong, they realize there’s a killer in the house.” Rogen is set to direct with frequent collaborator...

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, you’ll no doubt find a number of genre outlets running lists of horror movies to watch for the most romantic day of the year. Warm Bodies is likely to appear on most if not all of them, but there’s another reason to revisit the 2013 film this year: Lionsgate is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray and Digital) edition in Steelbook packaging, available exclusively at Best Buy.
I realize Twilight is practically a pejorative on a horror site, but we probably wouldn’t have Warm Bodies if sparkling vampires hadn’t paved the way. Both films are coming-of-age romances with monsters based on young adult books. Warm Bodies has the added benefit of the proliferation of zombies in pop culture heralded by The Walking Dead, plus a sense of humor akin to Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland.

In what can be called movie geek comfort food, Battle: Los Angeles and Krull have become cult favorites over the years. Why? You can watch either movie while doing other things keeping an extra eye on the screen, have devout fans who can recite the dialogue verbatim and will defend both movies to the end. Guilty pleasures, yes, cult status, definitely.
Even HBO Max has it listed as such.
The 2011 sci-fi and 1982 fantasy films have come to HBO Max and are available to stream now.
“Marines don’t quit.”
Battle: Los Angeles, starring Aaron Eckhart, and from director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath Of The Titans), is the exciting story of a squad of U.S. Marines who become the last line of defense against a global invasion. It gets the military right than most war movies. Numerous Marine units assisted in filming and the movie contains some awesome scenes with Black Hawks,...

April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

It’s a familiar enough pattern: a rising director helms one or two well-received indie films that hit big on the festival circuit, gets enough attention to hit up Hollywood, and signs on for a blockbuster feature or two. From Ryan Coogler to Chloe Zhao, it’s no longer news when a filmmaker jumps from Sundance to Marvel. But when filmmaker Jonathan Levine was in the mix to direct the latest iteration of “Spider-Man” after his well-reviewed festival hits “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane” and “The Wackness,” the director passed on the opportunity to take a different path: directing studio comedies.
Though Levine recently told IndieWire he interviewed “a few times” for the latest cinematic incarnation of “Spider-Man” — in 2015, he was rumored to be on a short list with other filmmakers like Ted Melfi and John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, before the gig went to Jon Watts...

Exclusive: It was a musical, until it was a crime. Orion Pictures is financing a feature about Chicago inmates who escape prison through producing a musical play. Commercial director Adam Hashemi will make his feature film directorial debut on Songs of the Damned and award-winning music producer Mark Ronson will compose original music for the feature film produced by Anonymous Content.
Ronson, of course, is one of the brightest stars in music today. He produced Amy Winehouse’s award-winning album Back to Black and his song Uptown Funk soared to the top of the charts with Bruno Mars.
Orion landed the coveted project in what was said to be a highly competitive situation. While they are currently looking to cast, we hear that Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) is in talks to join for a production that is eyeing a fall start.
Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin, Tariq Merhab and Charlie Scully is producing alongside Felipe Marino (The Wackness). Multiple Grammy award-winning Ronson will also be an executive producer.
The story, which is not based on any true incident but set in 1984, follows a group of inmates who stage a musical as a way to escape from prison. The script was written by both Hashemi and Emma Needell (The Water Man).
Hashemi is a well-known and prolific commercial director with such spots for Nike, Coca-Cola, Samsung, Beats By Dre, Audi and Alberto VO5 under his belt.
Hashemi repped by CAA, Management 360 and attorney Bob Wallerstein; Needell (The Water Man) is repped by Wme, Anonymous Content and attorney Melissa Fox. Ronson is repped by CAA and attorney Brandon Creed.

Director Jonathan Levine (Snatched, Warm Bodies, The Wackness) is teaming up with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris on a sequel to Eddie Murphy’s classic comedy hit Coming to America, Deadline confirms Barris will rewrite a script by Barry Blaustein & David Sheffield.
Murphy is expected to return to his iconic role for the Paramount sequel, though nothing has been officially finalized. Blaustein and Sheffield wrote the original Coming to America, directed by John Landis.
Coming To America was released in theaters in 1988, so it goes without saying that a few decades are expected to have passed in the storyline. I'm speculating, but it would be fun to see Murphy in the role of a King who sends his son or daughter to America to find love. Maybe giving him an idea of what his father (James Earl Jones) went through in the original film.

A dim-witted offering released in time for Mother’s Day, Snatched — directed by Jonathan Levine from a script by Katie Dippold — is a low-energy action comedy without much laughter. (You know you’re in trouble when a frequent joke involves misunderstanding “come” for “cum.”) Much of the humor falls painfully flat as Amy Schumer does her usual shtick as Emily, a woman with deep insecurities who enjoys a party or two. Goldie Hawn, who has been absent from the silver screen since 2002’s The Banger Sisters, plays her cat-loving mom Linda. She lives with her mentally challenged son Jeffrey (Ike Barinholtz), a shut-in who makes a living teaching piano lessons. When Emily breaks up with musician boyfriend, she’s stuck with a non-refundable trip to a resort in Ecuador and convinces the adventure-adverse Linda to “come” with her. She mistakes a “welcome” drink given by porters in the hotel lobby with “whale cum,...

If somebody reading this has a few extra million bucks to spare, they should consider giving Jonathan Levine a call. The director behind 50/50, The Night Before, and Snatched wants to revisit the struggling characters from his excellent coming-of-age film, The Wackness. Almost a decade after the movie went overlooked in theaters, Levine wants to explore New York City again […]

While the upcoming R-rated comedy Snatched will probably get more attention for its two stars, Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn--the latter making her first big screen appearance in almost 15 years--the man behind the camera is director Jonathan Levine, who continues to diversify his filmography with this female-driven comedy.
Levine first got attention for his early indie The Wackness, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008, and he followed that by adapting the young adult zombie romance Warm Bodies, then making the cancer comedy 50/50 and the Christmas comedy The Night Before, the latter two with Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
In Snatched, Amy Schumer plays Emily Middleton, who has plans to go to South America on a romantic trip with her boyfriend, but when he breaks up with her she asks her mother Linda (Hawn) to make the trip with her. Once there, the two are constantly fighting, but...

"You're going to miss this whole trip. Everything shouldn't be so scary." 20th Century Fox has debuted the first red band trailer for Snatched, the new comedy directed by Jonathan Levine (of The Wackness, 50/50, The Night Before). Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer stars as mother and daughter who decide to take a trip together down to Ecuador. However, once they get there they end up kidnapped (aka "snatched") and must work together to figure out how to escape. The cast includes Joan Cusack, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes, Christopher Meloni, Randall Park, Wanda Sykes, Óscar Jaenada and Colin Quinn. This looks a bit wacky and completely absurd, not my kind of comedy, but it's set to open big during the summer. Here's the first red band trailer for Jonathan Levine's Snatched, direct from Fox's YouTube: When her boyfriend dumps Emily (Amy Schumer), a spontaneous woman in her 30s, she persuades...

Calder recently took to Twitter to explain some of the advantages that come with working on an existing IP as opposed to an original property. Here’s what he had to say over several tweets:
“f you want to know why Hollywood keeps doing remakes and sequels and reboots and so on, here is a quick anecdote. I’ve been producing movies for 10 years at a variety of budgets. Some young actors go for the brass ring immediately after getting a hit. Others just care about the material and doing good work. It may not always please their agent, but it creates a staying-true-to-your-sensibilities career path that’s filled with a palpable authenticity. Outside of “Dredd,” talented 29-year-old Olivia Thirlby has hardly ever starred in big-budget studio films. She burst onto the screen with magnetic charisma in David Gordon Green’s “Snow Angels,” and before that, she had a small but memorable role in Paul Greengrass’ “United 93.” She also turned heads with an unforgettable role in Jason Reitman’s “Juno,” as the perfect object of affection in Sundance hit “The Wackness,” as one half of a crumbling relationship in "Red Knot," and with quiet presence and sexual power in Ry Russo-Young’s deeply underrated “Nobody Walks.” Not all of these films are particularly big hits, but they are...

One of this year's holiday comedies is The Night Before, about three friends, three ride-or-die homies, who go on one final Christmas eve adventure in New York. In truth it's actually a much sweeter story about friendship, and how important is to hold onto the friends that mean something to us. The Night Before is directed by Jonathan Levine, a filmmaker I first met in 2008 at the Sundance Film Festival because I went crazy for his film The Wackness. Years later he has directed two other films - 50/50, Warm Bodies - and now his latest is this one, The Night Before, once known as X-Mas or the Christmas Eve Project. It's a very fun movie and I had a great time talking with Jonathan about the challenge of making audiences laugh. This is the third time I have interviewed Jonathan Levine over the years, speaking with him in 2011 for an...

He’s given us the slasher film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, the coming-of-age drama The Wackness, the comedy-drama 50/50 and the paranormal romantic zombie comedy Warm Bodies. Now, writer/director Jonathan Levine brings us his latest effort, The Night Before, which just might become a new Christmas classic.
The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie as a trio of friends who have spent the past fourteen years searching for a great time in New York City on Christmas Eve. But now that tradition is coming to an end as adulthood proves to be inescapable for two of them, and this Christmas Eve looks to be their last one together. Still, nothing’s going to stop them from attending the craziest and most exclusive Christmas party that New York City has to offer.

A bawdy and big-hearted stocking-stuffer for the adults used to enduring all manner of kid-friendly rubbish around the holidays, The Night Before is also much, much better than the movie it’s being sold as. Yes, this is an R-rated, drug-filled, profanity-laden comedy about three friends (Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie) who set out to end their annual tradition of Christmas Eve debauchery on a (very) high note. And yes, it totally follows through on that premise, taking said friends on an insane adventure through the snow-dusted streets of New York City as they struggle to make their way to that most hallowed of holiday bashes: the Nutcracka Ball.
But The Night Before is also the work of writer-director Jonathan Levine (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, The Wackness, 50/50, Warm Bodies), who has over the years proven himself remarkably proficient at taking just about any genre and cutting through all its B.

The Strongest Man is a dry, dead-pan comedy about a Cuban man in Miami called Beef, played by Robert Lorie. Beef works in construction, but is known by friends and coworkers for being exceptionally strong. Beef is a good-sized man, but his natural strength goes far beyond the limits of any man I’ve ever met. Ultimately, this is a relatively insignificant fact about Beef, as his one love and passion in life is his gold-painted BMX bike, which he rides proudly like a child when not working construction or hanging art for a local rich white woman named Mrs. Rosen, played by Lisa Banes.
Beef’s best friend and coworker is the son of Korean immigrants and a seemingly talented yet underachieving man called Conan, played by Paul Chamberlain. The two spend most of their time together, often having peculiarly philosophical conversations in English, while Beef’s thoughts narrate the film in Spanish.

Kind of a good news/bad news situation this week. Bad news for those of us who like to watch sitcoms of 30 minutes in length whilst we eat dinner during the week, Channel 4 has decided to remove most of its good content including Peep Show, The It Crowd and Black Books from Netflix and Lovefilm as of February 15th. You can still watch these online but you have to go through their frankly useless 4Od app which I have never managed to watch a full episode of anything on without it crashing at the bloody adverts. Whilst its admirable that Channel 4 are taking things back in-house, they really need to improve their software first, or maybe they already have because I gave up on it back in 2012 and never finished season two of The Killing.

Xbox Entertainment Studios has announced that it is developing a television series based loosely on the life of the rapper Nas. The series, currently titled Street Dreams, will be set during the 1990s, in Long Island’s Queensbridge housing complex, where the Nas grew up, with Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, The Wackness) serving as the project's writer and director, and Nas himself contributing to the scripting of the series, as well as contributing music to its soundtrack. Content is king, as the saying goes, and Microsoft's Xbox Entertainment Studios wants to claim its piece of that pie. Last year, the studio announced several Xbox-exclusive...

Nas is going to Xbox. With the impending 20th anniversary of Illmatic, the album that many hail as his greatest, Deadline reports that Nas has signed a deal with Xbox Entertainment Studios to create and produce an original, half-hour series based on his life as an up and coming hip-hop artist in the '90s, which many refer to as "The Golden Age of Hip-Hop." The show, titled "Street Dreams," is being written and directed by Jonathan Levine ("All the Boys Love Mandy Lane," "The Wackness"), who recently signed on to create a Christmas-themed film with his "50/50" stars Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Levine also grew up in New York City in the '90s, giving the show a bevy of situations to choose from. The show is centered around the Queensbridge Housing Project where Nas grew up, and deals with hip-hop, family and dealing with the ups and downs of the rap game.

Deadline reports that Nas is developing a half-hour series for Xbox. Entitled Street Dreams, which may or may not be an intentional pun on sweet dreams, the semi-autobiographical show will focus on a young rapper in the 1990s. The show will be set in the Queensbridge housing project, which is where Nas grew up. Jonathan Levine, whose 2008 film The Wackness was a semi-autobiographical account of his own time growing up in New York City in the '90s, is attached to write and direct. Nas will be involved in the writing, the music, and providing cred for the video game system show.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Illmatic, the debut LP of rapper Nas and one of the most influential hip-hop albums of all time. To help commemorate the album, Xbox Studios is turning to production company Electric City and writer/director Jonathan Levine for Street Dreams, a TV-length series inspired by Nas' early life. Nas grew up in New York City's Queensbridge neighborhood, long known as a breeding ground for hip-hop and rap talent. Street Dreams will enter that neighborhood in the early 90s with a series of half-hour episodes. In order to best capture the look and feel of New York in the 90s, Xbox Studios is turning to a writer and director who grew up in that era: Jonathan Levine. Levine's film The Wackness was one of the first 90s period and won the Audience Award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Levine has since built an...

It seems we're only entering the streaming content arms race. With Netflix having planted the flag and Amazon Studios making a run for it, XBox Live Entertainment is adding to their own growing slate of projects with something they hope will connect with their button-smashing audience. They've wisely tapped Jonathan Levine to write and direct the hip-hop drama series "Street Dreams" (tip: get a new name). The half-hour show will be loosely based on the life of hip-hop legend Nas, and will take place in 1990s Queensbridge (where the rapper grew up), looking at the rap game (duh), family and life in general. It seems like they are still sorting out the exact details. Anyway, this is all a familiar milieu for Levine, whose NYC-set "The Wackness" oozed 1990s hip-hop from its pores and its soundtrack (which included "The World Is Yours" by Nas), so this seems right up his alley.
