‘Last Night at Terrace Lanes’ Review – Bowling Slasher Lands Somewhere Between Strike and Gutterball
In the pantheon of cool horror movie locations, the bowling alley is an overlooked gem. Unsurprisingly, the tendency to feature a disembodied body part being flung down the lane means that such films are frequently horror comedies.
Last Night at Terrace Lanes adopts a slasher approach (see: Gutterballs – or don’t), but maintains a humorous tone. The film, from director Jamie Nash and written by YA horror author Adam Cesare (working from a story by Jenna St. John), has a great logline: what if a killer cult attacked a bowling alley?
Sadly, the finished product struggles with its execution, leading to a decidedly mixed comedy slasher.
It’s the last night of business at Terrace Lanes, an aged bowling alley scheduled for demolition. Among the employees and the regulars bowling one last time, there’s Kennedy (Francesca Capaldi), a queer teen looking for some solo time with her crush Tess...

Described as Roller Boogie meets Friday the 13th, Death Rink is a wild new skating slasher that sees the night staff of roller rink stalked and killed by a mysterious figure who they believe may be the spirit of a teenager who was accidentally killed there years ago…
Originally titled Skateway Massacre, Death Rink sits in a very interesting pantheon – it feels like its been inspired by both David A. Prior’s Aerobicide (a personal fave) and Ryan Nicholson’s Gutterballs. Filmed on a similar low budget to both but with less of the Ott gore or uber-violence of either. Death Rink also follows the tradition of many an 80s slasher cash-in, insomuch as it spends more time following its cast talking to each other than it...

Every Coen brothers movie has at least one iconic moment, but few scenes are as legendary in their filmography as the dream sequence from “The Big Lebowski.” Set to Kenny Rogers and the First Edition’s “Just Dropped In,” the sequence (also known as “Gutterballs”) puts stars Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in the middle of a surrealist musical. The moment was recently named one of Vanity Fair’s 25 most influential film scenes of the last 25 years, to which Bridges revealed it was the only scene he witnessed Joel and Ethan Coen fight over.
“I had a little concern about how it was going to be directed by two people. I love my brother, but I think it would be really challenging to direct a film with him,” Bridges said. “I was wondering how it was gonna be directed by these brothers, and the only time that there was any...

After years and years of being tied up in a legal battle over release rights, My Name Is A By Anonymous is finally getting a release, and to go along with the glorious news, it's gotten itself a new title as well.
Look for Alyssa: Portrait of a Teen Killer on DVD September 23, 2014, courtesy of Wild Eye Releasing.
Even cooler? The DVD includes two additional cuts of the film. Snazzy!
Shane Ryan directs the flick, which was produced by Ryan Nicholson (Live Feed, Hanger, Gutterballs) along with Alisha Rayne and actor Kevin Gage (Michael Mann’s Laid to Rest, May, Heat). Katie Marsh, Demi Baumann, Teona Dolnikova, Alex Damiano, and Kaliya Skye star.
Synopsis
Told through a blend of found footage, documentary style first-person, and classical cinematography, the film is the inspired-by-true-story of Alyssa Bustamante, the 15-year-old girl accused of stabbing, strangling, and slicing the throat of her 9-year-old neighbor...

Makeup spfx specialist and indie director Ryan Nicholson (Famine) is set to lens a new, extreme horror film, titled Collar. This Vancouver native has already joined forces with actors James Duval (Donnie Darko), Nick Principe (Laid to Rest) and Mihola Terzic (Gutterballs) to bring horror fans what they want, more terror! The film begins with a rookie cop, who is lured to a derelict building. Here, the officer is broken down and captured. Then, he is collared by a dog leash and welded to a shopping cart. His captor is a mentally ill homeless man, who parades his new captor around the city's most dangerous areas. An early concept poster for Collar has been released. The graphic keeps the antagonist in darkness, while strange body parts are housed in the shopping trolley. Production on Collar has already begun and more details on the film will be released shortly. Production Date: November 2013 (Vancouver,...

Although Uwe Boll’s 2007 horror flick “Seed” wasn’t one of the strongest genre efforts released by the prolific filmmaker, apparently it did well enough to warrant a sequel. Below you can find the official teaser poster for “Seed 2: The New Breed.” Instead of directing the next installment, Boll will step into the role of producer. Marcel Walz has been tapped to helm the project. Details are scarce for the moment, but it would appear that “Gutterballs” director Ryan Nicholson is tackling special effects duties on the follow-up. Even if the story stinks and sticks to the bottom of your shoes, at least the FX will look nice. “Seed 2: The New Breed” stars Caroline Williams, Christa Campbell, Nick Prinzipè, Jared Demetri Luciano, Manoush, Natalie Scheetz, Annika Strauss, and Sarah Hayden. While you’re waiting for more information, feel free to stare at the teaser poster below. You should...

*here be spoilers. Director: Ryan Nicholson. Writers: Ryan Nicholson, Taylor Nicholson and Jeff O'Brien. Cast: Beth Cantor, Christopher Patrick Donoghue, Nathan Durec, Dustin Elkins, Karyn Halpin, Glenn Hoffmann, Des Larson, Christopher Lomas, Gustavo MacSerna, Thabi Maphoso, and Ady Mejia. Ryan Nicholson is a Vancouver based director who took the ferry trip over to Victoria for Dedfest '12. Nicholson is best known to this film fan for his sexploitation flick Gutterballs, which featured a brutal rape scene. This cinephile also tried to watch Hanger, but the film's subject matter was too grotesque. Have you ever scene an abortion performed with a hanger? That film was never finished. Now, Nicholson returns with another gorefest titled Famine. This is essentially a slasher flick taking place in a locked down high school. Few students make it out of this picture without a scalping, a knifing, an acid bath and many other shocking deaths. The story is fairly straight.

After viewing director Ryan Nicholson’s insanely demented and extraordinarily insane horror flick “Gutterballs” for the first time, I felt like I needed to disinfect my soul. If you’re a fan of shocking, over-the-top gore, then this particular flick was designed with your unstable ass in mind. Naturally, I’ve seen the first twice since my initial viewing, and I’m pleased to say it’s just as hard to stomach the third time through as it was the first. The level of depravity on display is unreal, and it currently ranks as Nicholson’s best endeavor to-date. Because Ryan seems to understand the power “Gutterballs” has over its audiences, he’s decided to return to these bloodied bowling lanes for “Gutterballs 2: Balls Deep.” In a recent Facebook post, Nicholson revealed that he’s getting closer to a shooting script, which, hopefully, means we’ll see this thing sometime next year.

Dread Central has gotten wind of a secretive project being developed entitled The Profane Exhibit, a new anthology film dealing with the nature of corruption that looks to be a no-holds barred shocker. Although just a few slivers of information have been leaked about this ten-part compilation, what we've seen thus far indicates some serious pushing of the boundaries of good taste, and we've got high hopes for it.
Three of the film's ten directors have been announced, and it seems to be a true rogues' gallery running the show at The Profane Exhibit. Try these names on for size:
Directing a segment entitled Manna, straight from one of the most visually disturbing horror films ever created, August Underground's Mordum, is Michael Todd Schneider. That name alone should be enough to curl the toes of even the most hardened viewer. But that's just the beginning.

There are some violent activities that are happening in the Great White North that are the talk of the town. No, I am not referring to the riots that took place after Vancouver lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to Boston. I speak of Mr. Ryan Nicholson and his flesh shredding films that have satisfied gorehounds everywhere, and have brought Canuxploitation into the new millennium.
Jason Bene: With films like Grindhouse and Machete, it appears old school viscera is back in a big way. What made you decide to jump in and make your own balls-out horror film?
Ryan Nicholson: I kind of got a head start with Gutterballs, doing the whole retro thing but it was so mean-spirited that it had a very little audience, but very loyal audience diggin’ what I was doing…with Famine, it has more mass appeal I think. No fifteen minute long rape scene in this one!

Junk Food Dinner bowls a strike this week as we take a look at three (3) films suggested by listeners.
First up, we take a look at 1982's "Megaforce," the story of Ace Hunter (Barry Bostwick) and his quest to defeat evil and ride flying motorcycles in front of green screens while wearing a headband.
Then our bodies get taken over by a murdered gangster while we watch "Retribution" from 1987. This horror flick is full of gore, glowing green eyes and the best midget cameo we've seen since last week.
Finally we watch Ryan Nicholson's '80s slasher homage, "Gutterballs," 2008's most notable bowling/rape fusion.

Ryan Nicholson (Bleading Lady) has begun early production on a sequel to 2008's Gutterballs. The latest title is Gutterballs 2: Balls Deep and the first film might be best known for a shocking rape scene. There are also some of the most gory deaths in horror from this earlier picture as Nicholson shows some of his make-up skills from other productions. Gutterballs 2 will change locals. Gone are the bowling alleys in favour of a water park. Survivors of the first film are chased again in the second and fans of the over-the-top style of filmmaking and marketing will enjoy this early graphic for the film, a la Jaws. Plot details are below.
The synopsis for Gutterballs 2: Balls Deep:
"Bbk strikes again! Everyone's favourite bowling-bagged butcher goes off the deep end, taking his trade from the bowling alley to an enormous outdoor waterslide park in...

A few very early details are surfacing for Ryan Nicholson's (Gutterballs) upcoming horror, comedy Alarming. This film will feature the supernatural, as a security guard and a group of land surveyors must deal with an ancient curse, deep in an isolated wood. To be full of blood, Nicholson, based in Vancouver, B.C., is arguably best known for his shocker Gutterballs. Gutterballs will have a sequel, shortly and Alarming will continue the Plotdigger trend of bloodsploitation seen in Hanger and Bleading Lady. Have an early look at the plot details, as Alarming goes into production during the summer of 2012.
The synopsis for Alarming:
"For security guard Dale Wallenchuk, it starts as a regular assignment: to assist a group of high-tech land surveyors as they make their first foray into an ancient wilderness. But there's something worse than hippie protesters in these woods. The natives say the land is cursed...

Ryan Nicholson Ryan Nicholson, the notorious genre director behind gory, over the top, retro styled slashers like Gutterballs, Hanger, Star Vehicle (aka Bleeding Lady) and the soon to be cult classic Famine (which is currently in post production) has just announced his next film project which is entitled "Alarming".
According to the director's Facebook page "Its official! Next feature film we are shooting is the creature feature "Alarming"!! The script is insanely cool and a total homage to 80s monster flicks...".
It's nice to see the director branching out, challenging himself by doing something different from what he has done with past films, yet I am sure he will find a way to include some stylish set pieces reminiscent of past eras and plenty of his trademark violence & kill-a-thons. In the meantime, enjoy this trailer for Famine.

Ryan Nicholson, the director of Gutterballs and Hanger, is back for a grindhouse style slasher in the vein of Slaughter High and Maniac. This looks pretty sweet and hopefully puts some pressure on Eli Roth to finally get busy on Thanksgiving.
Two years after a high-school prank involving flesh-eating acid nearly kills popular teacher Mr. Balszack, the graduating class of Sloppy Secondary holds a ’24-Hour Famine’ charity event on school grounds. But there’s an uninvited guest at this event, masquerading as the school’s handyman mascot, and he’s got an insatiable hunger of his own. The power’s cut, the doors and windows are chained shut, and now it’s not just cheerleaders who are getting nailed! Has Mr. Balszack come back for revenge? Is his sad tale just a cover for a brand-new psycho? Can the Nailer be stopped before the whole Class of 2011 goes six feet under?...

Love him or hate him, cutting edge horror director Ryan Nicholson is one of the ballsiest directors currently working within the genre. Although I wasn’t exactly a fan of “Live Feed”, the evil bastard won me over with both “Gutterballs” and “Hanger”, two of the most depraved and tasteless low-budget horror films crafted in the past twenty years. Even if you think you’ve got a strong stomach for cinematic trash, Nicholson is more than willing to put it to the proverbial test. If the guy wasn’t making movies, he’d probably be in prison. Enter the director’s latest creation, the high school slasher flick “Famine”. Co-written by Jeff O’Brien and powered by the production team at New Image Entertainment, Nicholson mines the past for the look and feel of his latest shocker, a sordid little number that finds a group of students being terrorized by...

Ryan Nicholson is a fans director and one of my favorite filmmakers. He makes movies for the horror fans and he knows what we like, blood, gore, boobs and crazy killers on the loose. From doing make-up FX work on hit shows like Smallville and Sg-1, to blockbusters like Ghost Rider he also likes to take his turn behind the camera and tell his own stories including Famine, Gutterballs and his newest, Bleading Lady. Check out my latest "Versus" with director Ryan Nicholson.
Brian S- First of Ryan, how'd you get into filmmaking?
Ryan Nicholson- I think growing up on shows like "Hilarious House of Frightenstein" and creature features on late night cable really shaped my future. I've been obsessed with horror and monsters ever since I could walk and talk. Doing make-up effects was a good introduction into film-making. I still do make-up effects from time to time.

Production crews New Image Entertainment and Plotdigger Films are releasing the first trailer for Ryan Nicholson's Famine. Nicholson and Plotdigger Films are both Vancouver, British Columbia based. Here, they specialize in over-the-top horror productions such as Gutterballs, Hanger and Bleading Lady. Their films are full of shocking material, eye gouging plot developments, and buckets of blood.
Famine is the latest horror production to come from Nicholson and company. This feature promises "a colourful kill-a-minute gorefest" (Plotdigger). The mature trailer backs up this statement, as a high school population is turned into nymphomaniacs and punctured blood letters. Have a watch of the bodily destruction unfold in the one and a half minute reel below.
Tagline:
"Get nailed in late 2011!"

Full disclosure: a screener DVD of this film was provided for review by Breaking Glass Pictures, which is the parent company of Vicious Circle Films.
Director/writer: Ryan Nicholson.
The first film from Plotdigger Films was Torched in 2004. Make-up effects artist and director, Ryan Nicholson then went on to produce several over the top gorefests such as Live Feed in 2006, Gutterballs in 2008, and the unwatchable Hanger in 2009. Nicholson has continued to progress behind the camera and his latest is from Vicious Circle Films entitled Bleading Lady (previously Star Vehicle). Here, Nicholson takes a stab at the horror genre, by cleverly turning the cliches of indie bloodfests in and upon themselves. The result is a laughfest, that slightly slows in the final act.
This title releases March 29th on DVD and the plot develops as a movie within a movie. Wes Craven's Scream film series developed in the same way,...

Gutterballs co-executive producer Dan Walton got in touch with us over the weekend to give us the latest on his in pre-production flick Bind, which we last reported on here.
“There is a lot that goes into making a film,” said Walton, who plans to shoot the flick from his own "group on a weekend getaway finds themselves pitted against a malevolent presence" script in Vancouver this winter.
“The screenplay has gone through many location and crew changes, cast upheavals and scrapped production schedules, and you are at the whim of investors, producers, studios and production companies,” Walton told us, “and let's not forget the unending task of finding the right distributor, but it all boils down to hiring the right crew and cast, and the cast is finally here and attached and ready to go.”

Seeing "from the director of Gutterballs" in the Star Vehicle trailer might make some people run for the hills, but one must judge each film individually (read some Gutterballs movie reviews to acclimatize yourself - Star Vehicle). However, "horror extremist" and director Ryan Nicholson is strangely proud of his achievements in filmmaking and Star Vehicle will be a visual assault that will either traumatize you, or create a fun movie making experience (Press). One can never tell with Nicholson and that unpredictability is what makes his projects so interesting. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything regarding filmmaker Dan Walton’s planned feature directorial debut Bind, but today that’s all changed. Walton (who served as co-executive producer on 2008’s lurid Gutterballs) informed us that the film (which now features the tag-line "Hell Just Froze Over") is set to go before cameras in March of 2010 in Vancouver, Canada, and also provided us with a synopsis of the 80’s horror homage and an updated cast list.
According to Walton, who will direct from his own script, Bind tells the story of “a weekend getaway to a scenic winter wonderland that takes a deadly turn when a group of friends find themselves pitted against the elements and a dark presence with a bloody agenda.”
