We caught up last week with writer Jeff Buhler, who provided us with updates on his scripted remakes of The Grudge, Jacob’s Ladder, and director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Pet Sematary reboot for Paramount.
Buhler, who is known to genre audiences for scripting 2008’s Clive Barker-inspired Midnight Meat Train and writing and directing that year’s feature Insanitarium, said of the script he penned of the remake of the 1990 film Jacob’s Ladder for Ld Entertainment with director James Foley attached to helm, “The script has been finished for some time.”
“Foley’s enthusiasm is very high, and he’s coming to this project with a lot of ideas,” he expounded.
“From what I understand, when he was up for this job, he basically told [executive producer] Mickey Lidell that if they hired a different director, he would murder them. That’s the level of enthusiasm we are talking about.

Olivia Munn sat down with me recently to - at first - talk about her role in Deliver Us from Evil, the supernatural thriller opening in theaters July 2nd. But, we went off on a few tangents, as you'll see and we talked about her first role in a horror movie: Insanitarium, which Munn was more than willing to recreate for Shock.

Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe are teaming to produce a reboot of "The Grudge" franchise.
Takashi Shimizu helmed both the original Japanese "Ju-On" and its 2004 Hollywood remake "The Grudge" starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. That remake scored $187 million worldwide from a $10 million budget.
Gellar played an American nurse working in Tokyo, who is exposed to a dangerous supernatural curse that locks the victim into a powerful rage.
Two further sequels were made in 2006 and 2009, the last going direct-to-video. Jeff Buhler ("Midnight Meat Train," "Insanitarium") has been hired to write the reboot's script.
Sam Raimi, who produced the first remake, will also produce this reboot alongside Rob Tapert and Takashige Ichise. No production schedule has been announced.

The nut house. The loony bin. Whatever your term for it, we all know it well... the insane asylum. It is one of the more unsettling settings in which a horror film might play out. To celebrate the December 31st release of Image's Sanitarium, we bring you our Top 11 Insane Asylum Horror Films.
As far as honorable mentions, one of my all-time favorite horror moments is in the insane asylum at the end of Psycho when Norman has completely become Mother. As the scene is very short, we kept it off the list and simply gave it an Hm.
Other notable nuthouse films include the Santa-themed sequel Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 and more hillbillies gone awry in Wrong Turn 4. Give us your picks below.

Another day, another remake. This time it's Jacob's Ladder, the psychological horror-thriller from 1990 starring Tim Robbins. THR posted news on development of a new Jacob's Ladder project that at the least has a screenplay and financiers involved, but no director yet. Mickey Liddell's Ld Entertainment (Killer Joe, Black Rock, Disconnect, The Collection) is financing the remake, which comes with a script from Jeff Buhler (Insanitarium, The Midnight Meat Train) who is revising an early draft penned by Jake Wade Wall (When a Stranger Calls, The Hitcher). Let's hope they can turn out something edgy and unique that will impress us. The original Jacob's Ladder was directed by Adrian Lyne, from a screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin. The story centers around Vietnam veteran Jacob Singer, whose experiences both prior to and during the war have resulted in strange flashbacks and bizarre hallucinations that continue to haunt him in his everyday life.

True fans of Tool will definitely respond to the name of Paul D'Amour – the band's original bass player, who introduced that distinctive bottom end on their debut album Undertow, before leaving in the mid-'90s to found the acclaimed psychedelic rock unit Lusk. Musically adventurous horror buffs should also check out his later work as a composer – especially his moody, unsettling score for Jeff Buhler's 2008 cannibal flick Insanitarium. Paul is tapping into that deep, dark well again for the full-length, self-titled debut of his experimental rock band Feersum Ennjin, which takes its name from the novel by cult sci-fi author Iain Banks (The Wasp Factory). “It was very gratifying to challenge these artists to step outside their chosen medium and explore the world of audio storytelling and to get everyone into production without a long fundraising period. With audio tales the only limitation to production value is imagination,” states Fessenden.

According to Bloody-Disgusting actress Liv Tyler was offered the lead female role in John Carpenter's new horror film project, The Hell Within. Carpenter is only an executive producer on the project, and Dennison Ramalho is attached to direct. He has really done much, just three short films that I can't find online. But, you can't go wrong with Tyler, she's a solid actress who always does a great job in the films that she stars in.
The movie was written by Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train, Insanitarium), and it tells the story of "a woman (Tyler) who goes on a quest into the heart of a Brazilian jungle to save a girl, only to discover that the girl was bait." Making things more complicated for the character.
Ramalho will shoot the film in the Amazon jungle in Brazil.

Let us be clear ... no matter how much we love someone, there's no way in the world that we'd ever head out into the jungle to try and find them should they become lost. No good could ever come from such an endeavor, but thankfully for horror fans people keep right on trying.

In May of 2007 (just prior to the nation’s economic collapse), this writer visited the set of the Bogner Entertainment and Trailer Park Partners production Trailer Park of Terror, a Southern-fried fright flick directed by country-music video director-turned feature filmmaker Steven Goldmann. Produced by Jonathan Bogner and Ralph Singleton (Pet Semetary) and based on the Imperium Comics of the same name, Trailer Park of Terror premiered the following year at Slamdance ’08, and was released to DVD that October via Summit Entertainment.
Starring Lew Temple and Priscilla Barnes (The Devil’s Rejects) and Nichole Hiltz, Duane Whitaker (Feast), Ed Corbin and Michelle Lee (among others), Trailer Park of Terror, regardless of its playfully sadistic EC Comics-vibe and inspired makeup designs by Todd Tucker, didn’t cause the waves its producers had predicted, and due to such, unfortunately derailed the planned feature franchise and television and comic book series. With Glass Eye Pix’s audiophile-geared webisode series Tales From Beyond The Pale in full swing (see last news here), enthusiasts of old-school auteur storytelling can now experience writer/director Jeff Buhler’s contribution to the mix, This Oracle Moon, which launched this week. The Midnight Meat Train/Insanitarium scribe spoke with Fango about making the Tales series’ sole sci-fi installment, which reunites Hellboy duo Ron Perlman and Doug Jones. In This Oracle Moon, a rescue team of astronauts is dispatched to a distant moon in hopes of reclaiming survivors from an ill-fated exploratory mission sent six years prior. When no survivors are found, the rescuers turn their attention to the elusive creatures inhabiting the nearby hills for answers.

So I was ecstatic to find out I Sell The Dead was written and directed a real, live Irishman, from Ireland, with the accent, the pale (I call it “royal”) complexion, and the Guinness addiction—Glenn McQuaid. Let the stalking begin!
The press has had a field day with McQuaid’s film (including Fangoria; you can watch a nice “Making of…” feaurette and read a “Director’s Statement” here) McQuaid and the film are basically omnipresent in the horror and mainstream press at the moment, which is awesome…
…unless you pride yourself on getting info out of your interview subjects that hasn’t been printed a billion times before. Damn you and your success, McQuaid!

I.ve admired Timothy Olyphant since his roles in High Life, Hitman and The Girl Next Door. Not only is he easy on the eyes, but he has a spectacular gift for infusing humor in the bad-guy role he embodies. You just can.t help but love him! I can.t say that I was all that familiar with Kiele Sanchez, who.s had parts include Stuck On You and Insanitarium. However, I totally understand why she...

Geek goddess Olivia Munn revealed on Twitter (via JoBlo) that she's been cast in two upcoming films, and at least one of them is pretty high profile. The Attack of the Show co-host told her followers that she'll be seen in the comedy Date Night, starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell. She probably won't get a lot of scree time, but it's something.
The second film, which Munn says she is prohibiting from discussing in too much detail, will be an action film that will require her to do some physical training.
Munn has to do some really low-level acting on Attack of the Show, and she's had a couple small roles before in movies like Broken Lizard's The Slammin' Salmon and the straight-to-dvd Insanitarium. Does she have big screen potential? I dunno. But she's great on G4, and it certainly seems to fit her personality.

It’s all about the traps this week. Check out what horror flicks are hitting DVD on Tuesday, July 15th, 2008...
Asylum (2008)
Directed by David R. Ellis
It seems all the madness surrounding Ellis’ last effort, Snakes on a Plane, popped something in his head and he decided the only way to follow it up would be with the most generic, bland, impotent kind of horror film. Enter Asylum, the story of a group of new kids at college who find out their new dorm is adjacent to the former stomping grounds of a doctor who got off on conducting experiments on kids their age. Lameness follows. Be sure to read our Asylum DVD review for more! Buy it here!
Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell (2007)
Directed by Kevin Wheatley & Jonny Gillette

This is a little disappointing as I heard the budget was pretty high on this guy. Amazon lists Jeff Buhler's directorial debut for release on DVD Insanitarium from Sony Home Entertainment. The DVD will arrive on July 15 with behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes and more. After he's institutionalized in order to cover for his sister, a young man encounters a doctor who is turning his patients into flesh-eating psychopaths.
