Three steps back

It's hard not to feel a bit disappointed by this one. The Overlord storyline, which looked like it was going to be important, seems to have fizzled away to nothing and instead the big threat is...some random bloke that looks like Harry? It seems like a lot of the runtime is taken up with the girls going somewhere, hanging around for a bit, and then leaving without achieving anything. And the ending is a painfully obvious twist that most of the audience probably worked out straightaway.

Harry's plotline is the highlight this week, as he takes a trip to a creepy asylum and discovers some uncomfortable facts about the Elders' history and him himself. It offers an interesting twist on the mythology anyway.

This Series Lacks A Cohesive Narrative

Warning: Spoilers
The idea that Whitelighters and Darklighters are two halves of the same person makes no sense based on what we have seen of Harry so far. He is far from perfect. He has shown himself to be deceitful on multiple occasions and prone to many human failings. I was pleased that Season 1 was finally referenced a little in this episode. It's mostly been like that season never happened. The sisters seem to have no emotional attachment to Galvin, Parker, or Niko. It's very weird. In the original the sisters actually felt emotional repercussions when they lost people they were close to. Prue felt Andy's death for a long time. And Prue was never forgotten. And the bond between the sisters has really diminished. I really liked them together in Season 1, but the Power of 3 is nowhere to be seen or felt in this season. It's too bad because there was a lot I liked about Season 1. The show is getting really bad, though. I expected more from the showrunner of Jane the Virgin, who (until the final season) seemed so good at plotting out a strong narrative with well-drawn characters. This new Charmed is a mess.
