Oscar-nominated actress Amy Adams was everywhere over the last decade, but the actress seemingly took a beat after a busy 2021. Since 2022’s “Disenchanted,” the actress hasn’t appeared in anything, not one film or TV project. That changes in 2024 with at least one movie scheduled for December (“Night Bitch”) and another filming now (Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun”).

Based on what I can gather about her new film, At the Sea, Amy Adams needs a pair of sandals and a stiff drink. Adams is teaming up with Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber – the director and writer of Pieces of a Woman and White God – for a new drama about rejuvenation and adjusting to a life you had not planned to live.
According to Deadline, At the Sea finds Adams’s Laura returning to her family at their holiday beach house after a long rehabilitation. Once there, Laura must readjust to her new lot in life, still haunted by aspects she tried to leave behind. Staring down the barrel of a new chapter of her life, Laura must cope without her fame, fortune, and, of all things, her identity.
Adams, a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, recently wrapped production on the sci-fi drama Klara and the Sun, which Taika Waititi directs.

Amy Adams has been tapped to star in At the Sea, a new drama from Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber — the director and writer of such acclaimed films as Pieces of a Woman and White God — as well as Hammerstone Studios, Ryder Picture Company and Ar Content.
Set to enter production in Boston in June, the film follows the life of Laura (Adams) after a long rehabilitation, as she returns to her family at their beach holiday home where she has to readjust to the complicated life she left behind. Now she is forced to face the following next chapter of her life without the career that gave her fame, fortune and, most importantly, identity.
Pic will be produced by Alexander Rodnyansky of Ar Content, Stuart Manashil, Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett for Ryder Picture Company, Hammerstone Studios’ Alex Lebovici and Jon Oakes, and Viktória Petrányi and Mundruczó. Exec producers are Paul J. Diaz, Maria Breese of 3:33 Creative, Lee Broda of Lb Entertainment, Jeff Rice of Jeff Rice Films, and Michael Kupisk. Zsofi Oblath and Rachel Rubin will co-produce.
Ar Content, Paul J. Diaz, and Hammerstone Studios will finance the film, with WME Independent to rep domestic rights, Capstone Pictures handling international, and Sacker Law to oversee production legal.
A six-time Academy Award nominee, Adams most recently wrapped production on 3000 Pictures’ Klara and the Sun, the next film from Oscar winner Taika Waititi, which adapts the dystopian sci-fi story from Kazuo Ishiguro. Up next, she’ll be seen starring in Searchlight Pictures’ Nightbitch from filmmaker Marielle Heller, a dark comedy she also produced through her production company Bond Group Entertainment that hits theaters December 6.
A married director-writer pair out of Hungary, Mundruczó and Wéber are perhaps best known for their 2020 pregnancy drama Pieces of a Woman, which premiered in Venice and brought star Vanessa Kirby her first Oscar nomination following its release on Netflix. Prior to that, the duo collaborated on White God, which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes in 2014; Jupiter’s Moon, which was nominated for the Palme d’Or; and Evolution, which also played the French festival. Separately, Mundruczó directed the pilot of the Apple TV+ limited series, The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried.
Most recently, Hammerstone produced the action thriller Boy Kills World starring Bill Skarsgård, which will release wide on April 26, and the horror-thriller Don’t Move, starring Kelsey Asbille and Finn Wittrock, for Netflix.
Ryder Picture Company has produced acclaimed titles like Dumb Money and Bruiser.
Ar Content is known for Cannes prize winners like 2019’s Beanpole, from filmmaker Kantemir Balagov, and 2021’s Unclenching the Fists from Kira Kovalenko.
Adams is represented by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Mundruczó and Wéber are repped by United Agents and Novo.

Marvel Studios has its “Fantastic Four.”
The superhero quartet — the first characters created for Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby — will be played by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (aka the Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (aka the Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (aka the Thing).
As part of the casting announcement, Disney has swapped the release dates of “The Fantastic Four” and “Thunderbolts”. Those are two of four Marvel tentpoles currently set to open in 2025, along with “Captain America: Brave New World” in February and “Blade” in November. Four Marvel films are also scheduled for 2026, including “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” That’s a ramp up from 2024: Marvel only has “Deadpool & Wolverine” for theaters, on July 26.
Per usual with Marvel, story details remain scant. But in the comics, the Fantastic Four are astronauts...

Regarding Pedro Pascal’s involvement with Marvel’s forthcoming Fantastic Four film, the stretchy cat could be out of the bag! According to SAG-AFTRA, Pascal plays the patriarch of Marvel’s first family, Reed Richard, in the superhero spectacle, with production soon to begin. The reveal comes from a career retrospective organized and presented by SAG-AFTRA, saying Pascal “recently wrapped production on Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated Gladiator 2 and will soon begin production on Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four.” SAG-AFTRA redacted the bit about Pascal’s involvement with Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four, but only after eagle-eyed fans spotted the post.
While we’re still waiting for an official confirmation from Marvel, the SAG-AFTRA gaff lends credence to the long-whispered rumors about Pascal suiting up as Mr. Fanstastic.
Rumors about who will star in Marvel’s latest attempt to reboot the Fantastic Four have circulated since the project’s confirmation.

Of the 272 films that have earned lone acting Oscar nominations – meaning they were each recognized in one performance category and nowhere else – a whopping 101 (or 37.1%) accomplished the feat thanks to lead actresses. Whereas just 60 examples have occurred in the Best Actor category, the corresponding female one reached that benchmark in 1991 and is on track to double it less than two decades from now. Its triple digit total has now been intact for one full year, having directly resulted from the simultaneous nominations of Ana de Armas (“Blonde”) and Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”).
Although an Oscar bid was generally expected to follow de Armas’s 2023 BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations, Riseborough very memorably came out of nowhere, having defied precedent by benefiting from an enthusiastic grassroots campaign. While most of the earlier lone Best Actress contenders belong in de Armas’s camp, many align with Riseborough in having pulled off major surprises.

The BAFTA film nominations offered jaw-droppers and a couple of head-scratchers with their inclusions (and exclusions) this year.
Always an interesting precursor to the Oscars, the past few years have produced less overlap between them, partially due to jury intervention in compiling the nominees. That makes deciphering what the BAFTAs mean to the overall awards landscape more complicated since the juries are only in place for directing and acting races, where most shockers are seen.
Oscar nominations closed earlier this week, so there’s no direct effect on voters; instead, BAFTA noms serve as mere clues to what we’ll see when nominations are announced.
Here are five things we learned from BAFTA nominations.

After releasing two films back to back in 2021 – The Last Duel and House of Gucci – legendary British filmmaker Ridley Scott returns with one of the most anticipated productions of the year. His latest film is an epic historical drama that details the checkered rise and fall of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
Napoleon features a breathtakingly precise performance by Joaquin Phoenix as the Corsica-born historical figure. Elsewhere, Vanessa Kirby delivers an exhilarating turn as his wife, Empress Josephine. The film is a joint production between Sony Pictures Releasing and Apple Original Films, with a longer version of the production said to be making its way to Apple TV+ later.

He’s won prizes from the Golden Globes, Cannes, and the Directors Guild, but Ridley Scott has never won a little gold man.
The 85-year-old filmmaker, readying to unleash his Joaquin Phoenix-starring epic “Napoleon” on the world November 22, gave a characteristically gloves-off interview in The New Yorker this week. (One delightful quote? The director of the likes of “The Counselor” and “Thelma and Louise” and “Robin Hood” said “my choices tend to be random” in terms of what projects he likes to pursue.)
But the topic of how the four-time Academy Award-nominated English director feels about consistently being shunned by the Oscars came up with New Yorker writer Michael Schulman. Scott’s swords-and-sandals saga “Gladiator” won Best Picture in 2001 and revived his career, but as Scott wasn’t a credited producer on the now-classic, the win wasn’t his to take. He lost Best Director that year, as well...

Carey Mulligan has had an impressive and varied acting career, as shown throughout her awards resume in films like “Shame,” “Drive,” “Mudbound” and “She Said.” But her two leading Oscar nominations came for “An Education” (2009), her first major starring role, and “Promising Young Woman” (2020), in one of the most uncertain and thrilling Best Actress races in a while. Let’s take a look back at those years as she returns with her next project “Maestro” as Felicia Montealegre, the wife of composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein, set to release November 22 before debuting on Netflix December 20.

Elvis isn’t dead. In fact, he’s very much alive and well after Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis” starring Austin Butler and, now, Sofia Coppola‘s “Priscilla,” featuring Jacob Elordi as The King.
However, as you can guess by the latter movie’s title, Coppola’s focus isn’t on Elvis but rather on the singer’s wife Priscilla, whom he was married to from 1967 until 1973. Coppola’s slow, purposeful drama puts the young Priscilla front and center and explores her complex relationship with Elvis — a relationship fraught with passion, power, power imbalance, and, frankly, abuse. The film from A24 lives and dies by its female lead and, thankfully, Cailee Spaeny soars in a breakout role as the titular Priscilla. And critics agree.
Marlow Stern (Rolling Stone) noted: “Spaeny, who is 25 but makes for a convincing teenager, is an absolute marvel, nailing Priscilla’s complicated mélange of emotions — the wide-eyed wonderment and youthful desire,...

Netflix spent big at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, picking up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Hour” for $11 million and Richard Linklater’s well-reviewed “Hit Man” for $20 million. But other than that and despite an unusually numerous 50 titles for sale, the TIFF market at large was muted.
The lack of activity was in sync with the festival season for 2023 so far, as Sundance and Cannes went off with a smattering of deals compared to years past.
“In this marketplace, the studios and streamers, aside from Netflix, would rather spend big bucks on one or two movies that they are passionate about versus spending a boatload of money to fill a slate or clog up the pipeline with regular content,” a high-level distribution executive told TheWrap who declined to be named.

If watching a movie can be compared to taking your emotions for a walk, then sad films challenge audiences with a full-on sprint. Since before Rose said goodbye to Jack or even Bambi lost his mother, tragedy has played a vital role in cinema’s most well-loved stories of every ilk.
For romance, the possibility of heartbreak raises the stakes, pitting lover against lover or, worse still, lovers against time in dazzling depictions of humanity’s enduring quest for security and acceptance. “Titanic,” “A Star is Born,” “Moonlight,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Up,” and countless other legendary titles have crafted couples so heart-rendingly believable that their joyous reunions and painful partings have provided powerful parallels to our own.
Epic tales of war and survival position total devastation similarly, dangling all-consuming grief and loss like narratively juicy carrots motivating the plodding agony of movies from “War Horse” to “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

A Compassionate Spy (Steve James)
See an exclusive clip above.
The latest film from acclaimed documentarian Steve James, A Compassionate Spy, comes with a fascinating subject: the spy who leaked nuclear information from the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union, therefore ensuring that America could not establish a nuclear monopoly on the world. It’s easy to see why James would be drawn to the spy, Theodore “Ted” Hall, and his wife Joan as he has often been interested in using individuals as the framework to explore larger societal issues. Utilizing a hybrid of recreations, archival footage, and modern-day interviews, James crafts a portrait of a man, a relationship, and the sheer weight of the decision to betray your country to save the world.

Many fans can talk and argue if the Marvel Cinematic Universe is or isn’t what it used to be now compared to its Infinity Saga, but one thing that Marvel Studios always gets right is the casting. Say what you want, but every principal actor that joined the MCU so far has been a spot-on casting for the character they played, even in mixed or negative-reviewed MCU projects. Therefore it’s no wonder that the fans are eagerly waiting for the official reveal of the cast for ‘Fantastic Four,’ one of the upcoming MCU movies set in the franchise’s Phase 6.
The newest Fantastic Four movie has been officially announced by Marvel Studios in December 2020, with Jon Watts set to direct. However, the change of directors happened since then, as Watts abandoned the project and Matt Shakman abandoned directing the new ‘Star Trek’ movie to replace Watts. At 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con,...

The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are on the verge of transforming both the Emmy and Oscar seasons this year, dealing another blow to an awards landscape that over the past three years has been rocked by declining ratings, pandemic-fueled cancellations and delays and the near-collapse of one of the best-known awards shows, the Golden Globes.
The strikes have already changed the face of the Emmys’ phase 2 voting, with the show date in limbo and actors and writers unable to do any kind of campaigning for their nominated shows. This week, one high-profile film, Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” pulled out of its opening-night slot at the Venice Film Festival rather than hold a high-profile premiere that its actors would not be allowed to attend.
And the longer the strikes go without a settlement, the more they will transform the crucial fall period for the Oscars and other film awards.
