“We had some really great footage that we just couldn’t include because it didn’t work with the story. A lot of things felt out, a lot of characters," Johnny Knoxville said last year about material cut from the hit "Bad Grandpa." "Spike Jonze played an old lady named Gloria. We had really funny stuff with Gloria but we couldn’t use it. Same with Catherine Keener, she played my wife and we couldn’t use that. There’s so much on the DVD and we are also doing a whole separate release next year with all the bits and how we made the movie, but I’m not sure how are we going to call it. We usually do 'Jackass 2.5' or 'Jackass 3.5,' so it might be 'Bad Grandpa .5.' ” And well, true to his word, "Bad Grandpa .5" is coming, and yes, Spike Jonze...

There was talk yesterday that Paramount was planning on moving Paranormal Activity 5, the fifth installment in the popular supernatural franchise, from its October 2013 release date to January 2014 and today it turns out the rumors were true. Paranormal Activity 5 will now hit theaters on January 3, 2014, making way for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, which will take the October 25 release date. Bad Grandpa will be a feature film, presumably taking advantage of the Jackass sketch in which Johnny Knoxville dresses up as an old man and pranks unsuspecting citizens. I've included an outtake of the character from Jackass 2.5 at the bottom of this post. As for the Paranormal movie, I'm sure many will assume this to be a bad thing considering the last three years have seen a Paranormal film in the October time slot, where it dethroned the reigning horror franchise, Saw. The last installment in the franchise was the lowest grossing of the lot,...

The studios are all experimenting with how to compensate for declining DVD sales and rentals, which are plummeting at a rate no one anticipated. All over Hollywood, studio home video departments are constricting, and their formerly sidelined digital divisions are coming into prominence as they try to come up with innovative ways to sell their product. One has to credit Paramount Pictures for being willing to take chances with online marketing and ventures. Now the studio is taking its entire Jackass movie catalogue and placing it for rental directly to fans through the Jackass Facebook page. All three of the Jackass features (Jackass The Movie, Jackass 2, Jackass 3) and two digital movies ( Jackass 2.5 and Jackass 3.5) will be available for streaming on ...

Jackass 3.5 Review
Premiering on MTV a few days ago was Jackass 3.5, the next piece in this epic saga of pranks, stunts and gags. Anyone familiar with Jackass 2.5 should feel right at home here. Jackass 3.5 is a sequel to Jackass 3D. The film is made up of footage that was shot for the film but never made it into the final cut, unused footage if you will. Star Johnny Knoxville originally said that they shot two movies worth of material, and it looks like he was right. With Jackass 3.5 we get a full fledged sequel that is equally as good as its predecessor and just as funny.

Jackass is a phenomenon, each film less of a concept and more a brand name. As a film critic, I adore these documentaries. And it took me the longest time to reason out why. Jackass is reliable. When I go to see a more conventional film, the trailers promise me one thing, and more often than not, the final product turns out to be well different from the original. But not with Jackass. It's always going to be the same thing: a bunch of juvenile stunt men doing outrageous stunts. Damaging themselves with ramps and bodily functions, taunting and tormenting each other for my devious amusement. Even if I don't find a particular setup entertaining -- like Jackass 3D's fecal volcano -- there's going to be another stunt mere moments away. Deep inside me, in that primal portion of my makeup that will always find farts funny, crouches that...

Although Johnny Knoxville and the guys made a third “Jackass” film doesn’t mean that the whole gang doesn’t have a few more extra clips up their sleeves. They did it once with “Jackass 2.5″ and are back at it again, dishing out the physical comedy-goodness with “Jackass 3.5.” Not only did they have enough extra footage from “Jackass 3D” to make another film, they decided to release it digitally on Joost rather than to give it a theatrical run. They clearly have done this before with “Jackass 2.5,” but director Jeff Tremaine wanted to handle it a little differently than before. The last time it was a matter of the releasing [...]...

You can't keep this sort of insane, troubling, hilarious, cringe-inducing footage locked away in an editing suite. If you create a literal crotch rocket that shoots a fiery projectile from one man's groin to another man's buttocks, that footage must see the light of day.

Today, we have the trailer for Jackass 3.5. After the Jackass 3D release, we reported that they had a ton of extra footage, which was likely to be released similar to Jackass 2.5. And we'll have the trailer for you in a minute, but the big surprise is that it won't be in theaters.
Now Jackass 2.5 was a straight to DVD release, so this move may not surprise some people. But Jackass 3D was a huge box office hit; I'm a bit surprised they wouldn't want to try and recreate that a bit with what is basically a movie made from another movie's production budget, kinda like buy one get one free. Yet it won't be straight to DVD either.

Well it looks like Jackass 3.5 won't be heading to theatres after all, and instead it will premiere online in much the same way that Jackass 2.5 did back in 2007. In this case, however, the collection of outtakes will not be made available in its entirety from day 1. Instead, starting in March, they will release new videos online every week before collecting them all together into a final product for DVD and digital download. It's unclear how long new content will run for, and indeed, whether or not the whole thing will actually be edited together into a cohesive film at the end. I guess we can probably assume that it won't be in 3-D either. I think most Jackass fans would agree that the Jackass 2.5 release wasn't particularly great, but this time around they seem to have a lot more material to work with. According to Thomas Lesinski, President of Paramount Digital Entertainment,...

Producers Paramount Pictures and MTV Films announced yesterday that Jackass 3.5 will be released online in weekly installments, with the subsequent feature-length film released digitally in March. Exactly where Jackass 3.5 will be available has not yet been announced however. In a press release, Thomas Lesinski, President of Paramount Digital Entertainment stated:
I don’t want to say that the ‘Jackass’ guys invented the Internet, but they were doing viral videos before most people had even heard the term. That distinguished heritage makes ‘Jackass’ the perfect franchise for digital.
The footage will feature unseen stunts from Jackass 3D, which has earned more than $116 million at the box office since it was released in October.
In 2007, Jackass 2.5 similarly followed Jackass Number Two. At the time it was claimed that the film was the first broadband movie distributed by a major studio after it was streamed for a week for free by Blockbuster...

Assuming you weren’t bludgeoned into blubbery, vomit-strewn submission by Jackass 3D and are hungry for more, the team behind the stunts has an entirely expected special surprise for you – they’re following in the tradition of Jackass 2.5 with another digital release, Jackass 3.5Yes, the team has been threatening ever since the film arrived cinemas that they had more footage up their poo-coated sleeves, and now they have plans to show it to us all. Every "Jackass" movie is supposedly the last one. But every "Jackass" movie makes a ton of money -- more, in fact, than the previous installment. The latest, "Jackass 3D," has already grossed over $116 million dollars in the U.S. alone according to Box Office Mojo, nearly double the $64 million gross of the original. The films cost relatively little to make and are incredibly profitable, so here's my guess: despite all their claims that they're getting too old or they're running out of ideas there's going to be a "Jackass" until one of the movies tanks or one of the guys dies.
There's another reason why this franchise will run forever: because the films have no plots, you can release deleted scenes as entirely new movies. Between "Jackass Number Two" and "3D," Paramount released the outtake fest "Jackass 2.5," and today they announced a "Jackass 3.5" is coming as well. From the...

Jackass 3 had a huge opening weekend and has pulled in more than $150m so far. That meant that the rumored follow-up Jackass 3.5 became a sure thing. We've known that the film -- a whole new feature-length set of stunts -- would not be a theatrical release [1]. Now Paramount has announced final plans for the release of Jackass 3.5, which will be doled out in online increments starting in March 2011 before being made available as a full digital offering and eventual VOD and DVD title. The film will be made up mostly of material shot during the Jackass 3 schedule, with some new material specifically created for Jackass 3.5. It will not be in 3D, though given the non-theatrical release that should be evident. Paramount Digital Entertainment and MTV have had a surprise hit in the form of “Jackass 3-D,” the gross-out threequel that has grossed over $155 million. That’s a lot of dough for three-dimensional poop gags.
Common thinking says the companies should double down on the scat humor and release another sequel to theaters, but Paramount and MTV have cooked up something different: a semi-sequel that will be released directly to the web.
For any other franchise, this news might come as a surprise, but the Jackass crew share DNA with the everyday knuckleheads that upload their self-shot, self-damaging amateur-stunts to YouTube and Buzzfeed. The series has a web feel.
That’s to say the Jackass gang’s skits are bite-sized, easily consumed at the office or school. If anything, we’re surprised the television series isn’t receiving the web reboot it deserves.
“Jackass 3.5″ won’t be the series’ first trip to the web,...

MTV has scheduled the DVD and digital download release of Jackass 3.5, a compilation of those bits that didn’t make the cut for Jackass 3D, for January 2011.
Following the $50.4 million debut, Paramount Pictures was reportedly considering its options on how to release the hours of remaining footage shot for the 3D sequel. But, contrary to those rumors, the studio will not distribute the additional footage to theaters for an easy cash grab. Instead, the faux follow-up will follow in the footsteps of Jackass 2.5 and go out as a separate DVD of extra material.
Johnny Knoxville told MTV there’s a three to four minute section involving Chris Pontius’ penis, a bit titled “Incredible Nut Shots” that speaks for itself, the “Slip and Bowl” where the crew is bombarded while on a slippery bowling surface, and a gag called “Rocket Ship to Your Anus.” So, you have that to look forward to after the holidays.

While there was some brief talk for the leftover footage from the "Jackass 3D" shoot to be cobbled together for a quickie sequel to the box office hit, Paramount has decided to follow in the footsteps of "Jackass 2.5" and release the footage to DVD and online outlets. With the cheapie "Jackass 3D" racking up nearly $90 million in box office receipts already, you might think that Paramount would be eager to piggyback it with a quick and dirty sequel in theaters. But that would require spending money on a marketing campaign and money on editing the footage into something…...

MTV is going to release over an hour of un-used footage from Jackass 3D for a bonus DVD titled Jackass 3.5. The same gimmick has been done before when Jackass 2.5 came out to huge success using the same ideology of collecting a mass amount of deleted scenes to use in a completely new format. Both Jackass 3D and 3.5 are due to be released just after the holidays with 3.5 aiming to be released online and DVD just before Jackass 3D hits shelves. Star Johnny Knoxville and director Jeff Tremaine commented on a few of the deleted scenes that we can expect to be included on Jackass 3.5. Chris Pontius’ Crotch “Oh, God! There’s a lot of good stuff. Just the three-minute, four-minute bit on Pontius’ penis. All the different things we tried with his wang. It’s hilarious," said Knoxville....

Hot off the record-breaking success of "Jackass 3D," the question on a lot of minds is: How long will fans have to wait for more "Jackass"? The short answer, according to Johnny Knoxville and director Jeff Tremaine, is "not too long."
"The plan is [to release 'Jackass] 3.5' first," Knoxville told MTV News recently. "We had so much footage left over, '3.5' is going to come out online and on DVD around January. That was the last conversation we had."
"We're not sure, because it changes," Tremaine admitted. "But 'Jackass 3D' on DVD comes out after Christmas; it doesn't come out on Christmas. '3.5' probably comes out before that — not Christmas, but sometime before [the] 'Jackass 3D' DVD.

In news that will surprise absolutely no one, Paramount is already thinking about how they can possibly squeeze even more money out of the Jackass franchise after Jackass 3D's stellar $50 million opening weekend. In this case, however, a traditional sequel is not necessarily what they have in mind. While it remains to be seen if Johnny Knoxville and his compadres ever plan to reassemble for a fourth feature film, Knoxville himself has already stated that they shot enough footage to fill an entire second film of outtakes. He had hinted that they might even be able to release this so-called Jackass 3.5 on DVD just in time for Christmas... but hold on a minute there! Why rush to release it direct-to-dvd when you could release it in theatres and get people to pay to see it twice? That just doesn't make good business sense! According to the L.A. Times...

This weekend’s record-breaking opening of Jackass 3D means a follow-up movie is a no-brainer, but a sequel may be in theaters sooner than you think.
Following the $50.4 million debut, Paramount Pictures is “considering its options” on what to do with hours of material cut from the 3D movie. According to the La Times, the studio was planning to release the footage online, as they did with Jackass 2.5 three months after the second set of stunts. But when the $20 million production more than doubled its money in just three days, execs are thinking bigger.
“We shot two movies’ worth of footage,” Knoxville said. “We have so many bits that we never even turned in to Paramount because we were so swamped with ideas — funny stuff. The bits were just coming out of us left and right.” One such stunt will continue the magnificent feats of Will the Farter, specifically...

Jackass 3D blew up in theaters this weekend. I ended up going to a midnight showing for the film in which four screenings of it sold out. People love seeing these guys jack themselves up on screen. The film made $50.4 million dollars on it's opening weekend. Because of it's success, Paramount Pictures is looking to release a Jackass 3.5 type film, which will also be in 3D.
This next release will contain footage that was already shot, but didn't make the final cut of the film. Ringleader Johnny Knoxville said they filmed so much material that they could easily create another sequel.
We shot two movies' worth of footage. We have so many bits that we never even turned in to Paramount because we were so swamped with ideas — funny stuff. The bits were just coming out of us left and right.

Following last weekend's $50 million take at the box office for Jackass 3D, it's no surprise that Paramount Pictures is already thinking about bringing more of the crazy, dangerous stunts to the big screen. Though nothing is set in stone yet, there's the potential that Johnny Knoxville and the boys may be back on the big screen in just a few months. 24 Frames reports Paramount had already been looking at releasing plenty of extra footage that didn't make the final cut for Jackass 3D for an online release similar to Jackass 2.5 (available on Netflix Instant). However, now the studio is considering sending the footage to theaters. As Knoxville says, "“We shot two movies' worth of footage. With “Jackass 3-D" pulling in a record-breaking $50.4 million haul in its opening weekend, Paramount Pictures is considering plans to quickly assemble a fourth film from the leftovers of the third reports The L.A. Times.
Johnny Knoxville says that the guys shot so much material for "Jackass 3D" that there's easily enough to make a sequel - “We shot two movies' worth of footage. We have so many bits that we never even turned in to Paramount because we were so swamped with ideas — funny stuff. The bits were just coming out of us left and right" says Knoxville.
Originally the plan was to release the extras online and on disc in a few months, much like what was done with "Jackass 2.5". However with this entry nearly doubling that of its predecessor, Paramount will make a decision over the next few days about whether to do a quickie follow-up theatrical release.

After the September 2006 release of Jackass 2 we saw an online special created from leftover footage titled Jackass 2.5. Four years later, the Jackass gang has returned with their latest Jackass 3D and scored an insane gross of $50.4 million this past weekend. With all the antics in Jackass 3D there was bound to be another special akin to 2.5 around the corner.
Now, La Times is reporting that is the case and we may be seeing it on the big screen before any type of home release. Lead star Johnny Knoxville told them there is enough for an entire 2nd film:
We shot two movies’ worth of footage. We have so many bits that we never even turned in to Paramount because we were so swamped with ideas — funny stuff. The bits were just coming out of us left and right.

We've already been over the possible reasons that Jackass 3D was such a surprise hit in theaters over the weekend, and you know what happens when a movie is a surprise hit? A sequel. Yes, even when the movie in question is Jackass 3D, nothing but an assembly of sketches and a bunch of dudes laughing really hard while they injure and humiliate each other. Lucky for Paramount, though, the Jackass guys enjoy doing that so much that they filmed way more footage than they needed-- footage they'd be more than happy to release. Even before Jackass 3D hit theaters there was talk of doing something similar to what Jackass 2.5 was back in 2006, a direct-to-dvd and online compilation of deleted scenes from the first movie. But according to The La Times, Paramount is now considering making a full theatrical effort of it. After all, Johnny Knoxville himself said "we...

Jackass 3D Directed by: Jeff Tremaine Written by: Preston Lacy Starring: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-o, Chris Pontius, Bam Margera, Wee Man, Preston Lacy, Danger Aaron, Ryan Dunn When Jackass: The Movie was released back in 2002, it provoked a lot of strong responses on both sides. Some people thought it was the most vile and idiotic drivel ever to taint cinemas, while others found it to be among the most uproarious and memorable theatre-going experiences of their lives. Now, 8 years later, there doesn't seem to be as much vocal opposition anymore. Jackass is simply a part of the pop culture landscape, and people have either accepted it, or they have become quite good at blocking it out of their mind. In the time since Jackass Number Two, however, Johnny Knoxville and his posse have faded from the public eye a little bit. Steve-o struggled with his drug addiction problems, while some of...

It’s not every day you can make the claim that something has just revolutionized the film industry. It’s also not every day that you see liquid shit fire out of a man’s ass like a volcano, gushing three feet into air before splattering down onto that man’s own buttocks in three dimensions. Well, unless you’re a member of the Jackass crew, because then stuff like that is pretty much a day to day activity. In theaters October 15th, Jackass 3D is the… well, not exactly third installment, considering Number Two was overflowing with enough stunts to create Jackass 2.5. So technically I guess this is the fourth film and it is without a doubt the best looking of all of them. That’s what you get when you use Phantom 3D cameras, which are capable of capturing amazing slow-motion, three dimensional footage, and have a price-tag that involves six digits. So...

John Flahive's article is articulate and informative. The comments it elicits are as interesting as his article e.g., one in its reference to Peter Broderick who is devoted to filmmakers' finding their way to online profits. His model is always tailored to the particular film, and is successful for those taking the time and interest in undertaking their own hands-on distribution.
Another most interesting comment is that the bridge between online exhibition and profits are the social networks. This is the key. The recent studies on social networking and participatory (pop) culture as formulated by Henry Jenkins, at USC this fall, and formerly Director of the MIT Comparative Media Studies Program, whose book Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide are now defining this new paradigm.

Nearly a decade after it’s original airdate Jackassworld.com continues to build upon the MTV franchise. The website, which is in its "fully erect" stage, is everything Jackass from photos, to blogs, to outtakes, and original web programming. Johnny Knoxville, whose name might not be synonymous with his acting career, has created what he calls a relaxed talk show web series, One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer. Knoxville drinks and chats with his guests, and you’ll find anything goes. Think of an off-kilter Anytime with Bob Kushnell. Jackass the Movie, Jackass Number Two and Jackass 2.5 the extended DVD release followed the Jackass TV Series. In an attempt to promote Jackass 2.5 they created Jackassworld.com, which became the center of this Jackass universe (yep there’s a whole universe of them), including their multiple spin-offs. With the site erect they decided to create “original programming”, because really why not?...

The Jackass gang is about to attempt its most audacious stunt yet: online-first movie distribution.
In a radical departure from the traditional movie business model, Paramount Pictures Digital Entertainment and MTV New Media are co-producing Jackass 2.5, a sequel to its two-time boxoffice hit that will skip multiplexes entirely.
Instead, "2.5" will be offered online for free over a two-week span beginning Dec. 19 courtesy of Blockbuster and its new online property Movielink, which will exclusively host the 64-minute film during that period. The movie will be made available at blockbuster.jackassworld.com.
From there, the film will move on to different pay-per-view platforms including iTunes and DVD as part of a light-speed reinvention of the customary distribution-window chain. The domestic release strategy will be replicated internationally early next year, but with different distribution partners.
In addition, the movie launch will be a curtain-raiser for JackassWorld.com, which will establish a permanent online home for the franchise beginning Feb. 9. MTV will oversee the site with Jackass shingle Dickhouse Prods.
As the first studio-backed broadband film, "2.5" is a bold shift for a franchise that has delivered hundreds of millions of dollars to parent company Viacom in traditional distribution channels, from theaters to DVD. When all is said and done, "2.5" could end up a milestone in Hollywood's transition to digital media or an overly ambitious misstep.
Tom Lesinski, president of Paramount Pictures Digital Entertainment, emphasizes that the film won't be the last experiment from a studio intent on being a first mover in the space.
"We're trying to shake up the model," he said. "We're trying to prove that some form of longform distribution can be successful on the Internet."
David Gale, executive vp new media at MTV Networks Music Group, acknowledged that longform programming is a rarity online, where the conventional wisdom holds that shorter is better. But he begs to differ.
"People say it's serialized shortform content and that's the way you should see it, but that's not going to be the (whole) future," he said. "That's only part of the future".
"2.5" reunites all players on both sides of the camera from previous Jackass films, including executive producer Spike Jonze. The franchise has averaged nearly $80 million in worldwide gross over two separate theatrical releases: Jackass: The Movie in 2002 and Jackass Number Two in 2006. While not blockbuster numbers, they represent significant profit given that production costs were a fraction of the gross. Both films also opened at No. 1 in North America.
Although long rumored in the blogosphere to be in the offing, "2.5" has been deliberately kept under the radar for 18 months, long before the writers strike erupted. However, if it succeeds, the novel distribution approach eventually could give striking parties more ammunition in their quest for digital revenues.
