Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

Dennis Quaid (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) is slipping into the world of a serial killer who used a smiley face as his calling card for Paramount+’s Happy Face. Emmy nominee Quaid will star as the Happy Face Killer in the streamer’s new drama, inspired by the killer’s daughter Melissa Moore’s autobiography, Shattered Silence, and her Happy Face podcast.
Emmy nominee Annaleigh Ashford (Welcome to Chippendales) was previously announced to play Melissa. Filming is expected to get underway this spring, with Paramount+ targeting a 2025 premiere for the eight-episode season.
“Happy Face for Paramount+ jumps off from Moore’s true-life story. Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis.

The White House Plumbers (accidentally) took down the presidency, but can Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux take down their Emmy competition? The “White House Plumbers” stars are both contending in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor, but only Harrelson is currently predicted to earn a nomination at the moment, sitting in fourth place, while Theroux is in ninth. If you’re predicting just one of them, you might want to reconsider that because this category is kinder to double noms than you might think.
Since 2000, there have been 10 projects that have fielded a pair of nominees in limited series/TV movie actor. And half of them hailed from HBO, home to “White House Plumbers” as well. In 2004, “Something the Lord Made” nabbed bids for Mos Def and Alan Rickman. Four years later, “Recount” stars Kevin Spacey and Tom Wilkinson faced off. No show this past season had a breakout moment quite like “Squid Game” did. Just two months after Netflix released its entire nine-episode debut season on September 17, it was announced that the South Korean series about class, inequality and exploitation had become the streamer’s most-watched show of all time. Now, the mega hit has also taken the Emmys by storm, racking up an impressive 14 nominations. One of those is for guest star Lee You-mi, who is recognized for her heartbreaking portrayal of Ji-yeong (aka Player 240) on the show. This marks the career-first bid for the actor, who now hopes to, uh, get the green light all the way to her maiden victory.

Emmy nominee profile: Hope Davis (‘Succession’) brings new character Sandi Furness to enigmatic life
“Oh, I just do what my dad tells me,” quips Hope Davis’s character Sandi Furness during the third season of HBO’s “Succession.” The celebrated star of stage and screen joined the acclaimed drama series in its most recent season as the daughter of business tycoon Sandy Furness (Larry Pine), rival to Brian Cox’s Logan Roy and his own horde of child executives. For her work, the actress just received the third Emmy Award nomination of her career and first in the Drama Guest Actress category.
Davis faces off against not one but two other “Succession” actresses for the trophy, including fellow series newcomer Sanaa Lathan and previous nominee Dame Harriet Walter. In addition to this internal competition, fellow three-time nominee Marcia Gay Harden (“The Morning Show”) and first-timers Martha Kelly (“Euphoria”) and Lee You-mi (“Squid Game”) round out the lineup.

Nearly two decades into her stand-up comedy career, Martha Kelly ventured into acting by taking on the role of Martha Brooks on the FX comedy series “Baskets.” In the half dozen years since her debut, she has carved out a niche playing perpetually soft-spoken, outwardly joyless characters on such sitcoms as “Will & Grace,” “Grace and Frankie,” and “Hacks.” She has also applied her notoriously deadpan performing style to a few dramatic parts, including the one for which she just received her first Emmy nomination: Laurie on HBO’s “Euphoria.”

Half of the record-breaking 14 acting Emmy nominations “Succession” received this year went to guest performers, three of whom are women. The only other series that have ever amassed as many simultaneous bids in the Best Drama Guest Actress category are “Six Feet Under” (2002), “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2009), and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2018). Included among the “Succession” trio is Sanaa Lathan, whose third-season performance is the first for which she has earned TV academy recognition.

“Good Omens” premiered on Amazon Prime on May 31, just in time to be eligible for the Emmys. Film werewolf and vampire Michael Sheen could be Emmy-bound for his scary lawyer on ‘The Good Fight’
Michael Sheen is one of those under-sung actors who rarely disappoints. The curly-haired Welshman who brought TV interviewer David Frost to life opposite Frank Langella‘s Tricky Dick in 2008’s “Frost/Nixon” and played Prime Minister Tony Blair — his second of three times — in 2006’s “The Queen” alongside Helen Mirren as Elizabeth II. But despite solid notices, he was mostly overlooked for his performances when it came to awards. He did land an Emmy nomination for his repeat portrayal of Blair in the 2010 TV movie, “The Special Relationship.” And 2003’s “The Deal,” which featured his first depiction of the British Pm, at least won a BAFTA TV award for Best Single Drama.

Masters Of Sex alum Michael Sheen has been tapped to star opposite Christine Baranski, Cush Jumbo and Rose Leslie on the upcoming third season of the CBS All Access legal drama series The Good Fight, set to premiere in early 2019.
In a one-year deal, he will play Roland Blum, a brilliant, charismatic and Machiavellian lawyer. He is a man of appetites – drugs, sex, you name it – who’s far more interested in winning than the niceties of following the law.
Sheen also joins The Good Fight series regulars Audra McDonald, Sarah Steele, Michael Boatman, Nyambi Nyambi and Delroy Lindo.
In Season 3, the resistance does. Diane Lockhart (Baranski) tries to figure out whether you can resist a crazy administration without going crazy yourself, while Adrian Boseman (Lindo) and Liz Reddick-Lawrence (McDonald) struggle with a new post-factual world where the lawyer who tells the best story triumphs over the lawyer with the best facts.

When “The Crown” star Matt Smith was asked if he knew whether or not the Royal Family has watched “The Crown,” he gave IndieWire a line from classic spy thrillers: “If I’d told you, I’d have to kill you.”
That’s an unusual thing for an actor to say while promoting their show, but Smith did at least clarify that “I’m pretty certain that someone has seen it. In fact, I know that someone else has seen it.”
Then he repeated: “But if I told you which ones, I’d have to kill you.”
While it remains a mystery as to whom Smith was referring, he was otherwise relatively candid about shooting Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Crown.” Smith plays Prince Philip, husband to Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy), in the series.

Netflix's pricy royal family drama The Crown has stand-out performances from John Lithgow and Matt Smith, but lacks story...
Warning: contains spoilers.
The great cliche about the British is that we’re a stoic lot; emotionally reserved and only ever prone to bouts of ‘hayfever’ when Bambi’s mum dies.
Netflix’s £100m production of The Crown tries to buck this trope with a ten-part series dramatising the personal and political events surrounding the first decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign from 1952.
One part Downton Abbey, one part House Of Cards (the original of course), The Crown never quite decides if it wants to commit itself to a political drama or total supposition about the inner workings of the Court of St James's.
Written by Peter Morgan, the identity struggle at the heart of the series is not hard to explain. Morgan made his name as...

The idea may seem elementary (sorry), but "Sherlock" has never had a theatrical release before now. The upcoming Victorian-era special, "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride," will get a limited release in U.S. and U.K. theaters after it premieres on TV this January.
The BBC and PBS Masterpiece revealed, over the weekend, that the special will air on TV on Friday, January 1, 2016. This is the first time both the U.S. and the U.K. are sharing a premiere date. (The Special Relationship at work!)
According to Entertainment Weekly the movie will then be in theaters for two days, on Tuesday, January 5 and Wednesday, January 6. If you head out to the theater to see "The Abominable Bride," the episode comes with 20 minutes of additional footage, including a guided set tour of 221B Baker Street and a short "making-of" feature with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Michael Sheen has delved into the effort he goes to when portraying real-life people in biopics.
Speaking at a BAFTA Cymru event in London last night (March 11), the actor revealed that he struggles to let go of those he plays, such as in BBC Four's Kenneth Williams: Fantabulosa!.
"I think to immerse yourself in anyone's life, it becomes fascinating as soon as you start to really get into everything," he explained.
"With Kenneth Williams, because he'd written diaries, that became like the rabbit hole that I went down and so anything he wrote in his diaries - or [if] he said, 'I watched this film' or, 'I read this book' or, 'I listened to this music' - I could do and I did."

The story behind Dan Rather’s ruined reputation following his report on George W. Bush’s dodginess during Vietnam is heading to the big screen. That logline alone is enough to warrant a starry line-up, due to its heavy-hitting nature. Plus, who doesn’t love a juicy scandal? With principal photography set to begin next week on Truth, another big name has joined the cast.
The news comes via Deadline, whose sources reveal that Dennis Quaid has signed on to appear as Colonel Roger Charles. He’ll be starring alongside Robert Redford who’s snagged the role of iconic newscaster, Rather; and Cate Blanchett who’s tackling the part of 60 Minutes producer, Mary Mapes. Charles was a key figure in the drama, which saw all three embroiled in a plot to uncover Bush’s deserter tactics:
Charles served two tours in Vietnam, then in the Pentagon before becoming a liaison working with 60 Minutes II.

Hammer Horror has been back for a few years now and their first major success since their revival was 2012’s The Woman in Black. Now the studio has released the first teaser trailer for the sequel The Woman in Black: Angel of Death. The teaser gives un nothing to go off on in its short runtime. Besides some threatening text and a little jump scare, there are no hints toward story and characters. The film is directed by British TV director Tom Harper and stars Helen McCrory (The Queen, The Special Relationship), Jeremy Irvine (War Horse, Railway Man), and Adrian Rawlins (the Harry Potter series) and will be released this February.

After receiving punch after punch of critical praise for the Oscar (cinema’s version of the water bottle and towel) winning Life of Pi, Ang Lee will turn to the world of boxing for his next cinematic adventure. He, together with producing partner James Schamus (the Mickey to Ang Lee’s Rocky, and CEO of Focus Features) will collaborate on an as-yet-untitled film that aims to bring the glitz and class of 1960s and 70s boxing to the silver screen by giving us the low-down on the era’s biggest characters and fights, including Muhammad Ali and Joe Fraser, whose fight was so popular and anticipated they named it the Thrilla in Manilla. Do you know how many boxing matches get special rhyming nicknames? Not many.

Actress Hope Davis may be headed to an interesting guest spot over at NBC’s Law & Order: Svu, but the gig also constitutes somewhat of an In Treatment reunion.
The HBO drama, In Treatment, which stars Gabriel Byrne, was written by Warren Leight, who is the current showrunner of Svu. Hope Davis played Mia for several episodes of season 2.
THR has learned that Davis will pop up on Svu as Viola Mesner, the mother of a very trouble boy named Henry. Ethan Cutkosky of Shameless will portray her son.
“Julie Martin and I co-wrote this one; it’s a tough episode about a mother who confronts the possibility that her 10-year-old son is just … wired wrong,” Leight told THR. “We sent it out to Hope and I crossed my fingers because I really couldn’t think of anyone else who could play it. If you’re going to launch a new TV show around a face, you could do a lot worse than Dennis Quaid’s twisted scowl underneath a cowboy hat. From Killing Them Softly to Queen of Versailles, the autumn's big Us films paint a harrowing portrait of a country gripped by class envy, loss and fear of ruin
The Great Gatsby ends at night, on the beach. The hero has been shot and the party is over. So narrator Nick Carraway sits down on the sand and mourns not only his friend but America as a whole – a New World grown somehow old and corroded. He thinks about the green light at the end of Daisy's dock and about how Gatsby ran at it, stumbled and lost, not realising that his dream was already behind him. "Gatsby believed in that green light," he writes. "The orgiastic future that year-by-year recedes before us."
I'm now wondering whether the film version of The Great Gatsby may not be a little like Daisy's green light itself, winking in the distance, barely out of reach.

"[McCain] knows in his gut that he put somebody unqualified on the ballot. He knows that in his gut, and when this race is over that is something he will have to live with ... He put somebody unqualified on that ballot and he put the country at risk; he knows that." -- Matthew Dowd, Republican political strategist, fall 2008
Few made-for-television movies have arrived with the amount of fanfare, anticipation and attendant hyperbole as has HBO's political docudrama Game Change, which chronicles Sarah Palin's erratic and polarizing performance as the Republican Party's vice-presidential nominee during the historic 2008 presidential election. Almost as soon as the HBO production of John Heilemann and Mark Halperin's blockbuster was announced, critics -- particularly those from the Republican right -- began taking potshots at it. That chatter has built up to a veritable crescendo in advance of Game Change'spremiere Friday on HBO at 9 p.m.

Adolescents learn a lot from films. So, lots to worry about there.
The big story
As teenagers Hollywood taught us everything. How to dance and sing. How to meet somebody. How to break up with them. The facts of life? Hollywood had that covered too. Like a sexier, savvier older brother with a pass to the coolest parties in town.
Little did we know, as we wound our way out of adolescence into extended adolescence, that Hollywood was dragging us into the gutter. At least, that's the colourful interpretation of a new study by scientists in Germany, who recently found that teens exposed to movies featuring alcohol consumption are more likely to drink to excess themselves. 16,000 students aged 10 to 19 from state schools in Scotland, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland were quizzed on their movie watching habits by Reiner Hanewinkel and colleagues from the Institute for Therapy and Health Research in Kiel.

Famous for playing Tony Blair in three different films, as well as David Frost and Brian Clough, he is about to play Hamlet at the Young Vic. Yet the Welsh actor still remains practically anonymous
It is a source of unending amazement to me that so many celebrities regard an interview as an opportunity to boast about their brilliance, in the belief that this will convince readers they are brilliant. This is not a mistake Michael Sheen is in any danger of making.
