- A man suffering from sickle cell anemia and his sister arrive at the airport from Brazil, looking for Dr. March. As in Robert March, Angies dead husband. As the team tries to sort things out, they discover that the man is infected, and that several crates of "medical supplies" also came in on the flight. Following these supplies leads to serious danger and surprising revelations. Colefield and Kirsty finally meet again.—kamas716
- Maria [Ellen Thomas] and her brother Aguinaldo [Clarence Allen] have flown all the way from Brazil to see Dr March and get help for Aguinaldo's bleeding disorder. After stabilizing him, Angela tells Fr Harman that Aguinaldo's neck wounds are consistent with Code 5 activity, and they ask Maria for more information about her brother's condition. Aguinaldo's doctors were treating him for sickle cell anemia, Maria explains. Angela says that he shows no evidence of sickle cell anemia. Maria maintains that they cured him and that the bleeding is due to transfusions he has been receiving. When Maria asks when she can see Dr March, both Angela and Fr Harman are surprised to learn that she is speaking of Robert March, Angela's husband, who has been dead for six years. Angela becomes upset, and Fr Harman makes her leave the room. Fearing that this may be a Code 5 plot to get at Angela, he refuses to let Maria near her.
Mike and Rice are at the airport, interviewing the flight crew for anything unusual that might have happened on the flight from Brazil. The only thing of note is that the flight was delayed because of an emergency shipment of medical supplies that needed to be boarded. When they check with the cargo handlers, they learn that there were five large boxes. Four have already been loaded on a truck, which takes off as soon as the driver sees Mike and Rice asking questions. Mike jumps in his car and follows them. The fifth box is still in the cargo bay, so Rice opens it. He finds a hermetically-sealed coffin, timed to open in 6 hours 16 minutes. They transport the coffin to headquarters, where it is placed under guard in a sealed room. Then they wait.
While following the truck, Mike gets a call from Frances. She has dug up a few things about Kirsty and journalist Jacob Keanault. First of all, Kirsty is not answering her telephone. Second, she quit her teaching job a week ago and Jacob quit his job three weeks before that. Finally, they're both in Kirsty's apartment with the curtains drawn at 3:45 PM. 'You work it out,' Frances advises. Mike asks Frances to leave a note asking Kirsty to call him.
Aguinaldo is in bad shape. His body is mottled with bruises, each of which bleeds profusely when Angela presses on them. He is on the border of clinical shock, and Angela is transfusing him with plasma albumin. She doesn't think it's any kind of normal hemorrhagic fever. Closer examination of the various wounds show that they were not made all at once...maybe over a 6 month period. The Code 5s started at the neck. When the veins in the neck began to collapse, they moved down the chest, back and abdomen. The wounds also appear too small to be consistent with Code 5 feeding. Instead, Angela thinks they may have only been tasting.
In the meantime, Maria has requested that Rice come sit with her along the Thames where they can talk. As she makes a boat out of paper and places an offering in it, she tells him how her gods answered her prayers and brought her to the doctors that cured Aguinaldo's anemia and gave him six months pain free. When the bleeding started, they told her about Dr March, and she came to England to find him. He is the only one in the world who can cure her brother, they told her. Dr March is not dead, she says. 'They' can cure him. They only want peace and an end to the killing. Rice realizes immediately that she is talking about Code 5s, and tells her that whatever they did for Aguinaldo was not for his benefit. He was another experiment. Then he asks why she really brought him here.
Mike is getting tired of following the truck. It isn't stopping, and he thinks it is time to stop it. Fr Harman gives permission. The SWAT team that has joined up with Mike passes the truck and swerves in front of it, causing it to stop. Mike forces the drivers to open the back doors. There is nothing there but tires! Everything was prearranged with the Customs Department. The truck was a decoy.
Meanwhile, Maria has taken Rice to the warehouse where she was ordered to lure Angela. When they arrive, Rice is knocked out cold and placed inside the warehouse. He awakens to find himself surrounded by the four missing coffins, each set to open in five minutes. Time is ticking quickly. He tries the doors, but they are firmly padlocked. At 4:30 minutes, he gets a cell call from Mike and advises him of the situation. Mike is on the way in a chopper. At 3:30, the coffins begin to release the hermetic seal. At 2:30, Rice puts his gun to his throat and contemplates shooting himself. At 2:00, the coffin lids unlock. At 1:30, Rice gets an idea. He pulls one of the coffins into the shaft of light streaming between the padlocked doors. At 1:00, he starts cutting the control wires. At 0:30, he jumps aside just in time to see the coffin explode, breaking a large opening in the warehouse door. Rice then runs like hell.
The coffin at headquarters has also opened. Out steps Dr Paul Hoyle [Corin Redgrave]. 'I'm a friend of your husband,' he greets Angela. The true story about Angela's husband then comes out. Robert was a Code 5, recruited by them to help with blood research. He was executed by the Code 5 'death squad,' as the Code 5s refer to the team. 'But he always loved you,' Dr Hoyle explains. In fact, the residue from his body is in the cold storage vault. Angela knows about this, of course, but leaves the room when she can listen no more, leaving Hoyle to talk to Fr Harman. The Code 5s are hoping that Angela and Harman will help to revive Robert.
Later, Fr Harman joins Angela in Aguinaldo's room where she is transfusing blood. 'I thought that's what got him into this mess,' Harmon says. No, replies Angela. The more she searched, the more she couldn't find anything wrong with his blood...no abnormalities, no distortions, absolutely perfect. Then she realized it was synthetic blood. Angela figures that the Code 5s were running a synthetic blood prototype into Aguinaldo, thinking that, if a human could survive on it, so could they. 'But they didn't like the taste,' concludes Fr Harman.
Meanwhile, Mike and Kirsty meet in a pub. She's still confused over the truth about Jack and about Mike's part in his disappearance, but Mike is more concerned with her current relationship with Jacob. This makes Kirsty smile, thinking that Mike is jealous. Then Mike notices that Kirsty isn't drinking her wine. He excuses himself, goes into the men's room, and breaks the mirror. He scans the pub with a mirror fragment but, before he can find Kirsty's reflection, he is jumped by the bouncers who saw him reaching for the gun in his jacket. Kirsty is appalled that he was trying to kill her and runs out the door.
Angela is also confused. Maybe the Code 5s do retain real human emotions. Maybe they do want peace. Maybe we should keep an open mind, she says to Fr Harman, thinking about the massive implications of perfecting artificial blood. All sorts of blood disorders could be cured. 'Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, perhaps?' says Dr Harman. [Original Synopsis by bj_kuehl]
