Ned applies to Happy Time Temp Agency (the same temp agency where George worked in Dead Like Me (2003)) to become a desk assistant at Betty's Bees.
The scene where Olive is on a hill dressed as a nun singing is a shot-by-shot spoof of the famous opening scene from the movie The Sound of Music (1965).
Diana Scarwid, who plays Mother Superior in this episode, also played the mother of Lee Pace's character on Wonderfalls (2004); another show created by Bryan Fuller.
Diana Scarwid's recurring role as a strict mother superior at a nunnery, which debuts in this episode, seems to be a riff on the scenes in Mommie Dearest (1981) in which Joan Crawford's teen-aged daughter Christina (played by Diana Scarwid) is punished for her indiscretions with boys by being banished to a secluded Catholic school/nunnery. Some of Scarwid's dialogue here is almost verbatim what the mother superior in Mommie Dearest says to Christina in that film.
The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Costumes for a Series.
