- Sam uses the budding relationship between her boss and her friend, Dena, to stop a construction project that would destroy the home of an endangered species, while trying to figure out why Todd keeps ignoring her.
- "I was reading an article the other day ... by which I mean I was watching TV."
Thus begins another 21-minute adventure of everyone's favorite amnesiac.
Samantha, the amnesiac, and Dena, her buddy, are walking to work and conveniently rehashing the events of last episode: ex-boyfriend Todd charging into Samantha's apartment, kissing her and then leaving abruptly to return to current-girlfriend Chloe.
Samantha proclaims that she is not going to care "about anybody ever again." Dena then compares love to a frisky and uncontrollable canine, telling Samantha to let her "heart be a dog."
Moments later, Samantha enters the elevator with boss-man Mr. Chapman, who -- after a few awkwardly silent seconds -- blurts out: "Your friend? I want her. Make it happen."
Samantha protests, then heads off to her big shopping-mall development project that is about to break ground. She meets Andrea, who encourages Samantha to play matchmaker between Dena and Chapman as it might lead to better office furniture.
Just as Samantha is reveling in the glory of her 200-million dollar project, protestors storm the lot and accuse Samantha of being a horrible "butterfly killer."
Flashback! A straight-haired Samantha stalks the project site and lists "parenting books, golf, Ohio" and rare blue butterflies as things she "couldn't give a crap about."
Back in the present day, good Samantha worries that she will soon have butterfly blood on her hands. Looking for a way out, she has a brain storm: butter up Chapman by setting him up with Dena.
End of act one!
The next day, Samantha begrudgingly talks up Chapman to Dena, who says she will be seeing "Chase" again soon. A guilty Samantha defends her actions by claiming that she is only using her friend in order to save a species.
Just then: Todd! Samantha and her ex meet, but the confrontation is anti-climactic. Todd -- as he is wont to do -- leaves abruptly.
Samantha and Andrea attend a topiary class with Dena. Andrea complains about back pain (and the need for new office chairs) while Samantha explains the plight of the butterflies. Sweet Dena, sweetly oblivious to the pair's ulterior motives, offers to talk to her new beau about the pressing issues.
The next day, Andrea has a new chair but, alas, the mall project is still a go.
End of act two!
Andrea is enjoying the new office cappuccino machine (courtesy of Chapman via Dena), while Samantha researches alternate shopping mall plans. Chapman only wants to talk about Dena, however. He not only threatens to read a few choice lines of his recently-penned erotic poetry, but also reveals a few too-intimate details of the couple's burgeoning sex life.
Suddenly-scheming Samantha tells Chapman that he might be coming on too strong. She promises to talk to Dena, but that he will "owe" her.
Samantha then tells Dena that she is coming on too strong. She tells Dena to slow down. Unfortunatley, this advice leads to Dena missing a performance by Chapman's band.
The next day, Chapman laments that no one was there to see him play cowbell on Night Ranger's "Sister Christian." The boss begs -- begs! -- for Samantha's help. Samantha agrees under one condition: postpone the mall project. Later that night at dinner, Chapman and Dena uncover Samantha's nefarious scheming. An angry Dena confronts Samantha, dropping a bomb: the butterfly-genocide is back on schedule.
Samantha, wearing blue butterfly wings, heads immediately to the project site, where she hobnobs with protestors and vows not to leave until the creatures are safe. She eventually ends up on the local news for the whole town -- including an amorous Dena and Chapman -- to see.
The temporarily conniving, but mostly well-meaning amnesiac apologizes to Dena over the network airways. Dena, kind soul that she is, accepts.
Later, Regina shows up at the bulldozer to comfort Samantha, admitting to feeling pride in her daughter's actions -- after initially attributing the sensation to some "bad sour cream."
Come morning, Samantha is ready to stand her ground, but it it too late. The bulldozers roll and the butterfly slaughter is on.
Samantha walks out of Chapman & Funk carrying a cardboard box full of her belongings and heads for Todd's apartment. She explains to doorman Frank that she has quit her job when Todd suddenly emerges.
Cutie Todd explains that he needs to give his relationship with Chloe a chance. Samantha responds by lip-locking with her ex-flame and then shoving him to the ground. "Lose some sleep over that," she exclaims.
Empowered, Samantha picks up her cardboard box and walks away to the tune of "Sister Christian," encountering a rare blue butterfly at a nearby flower stand. She smiles at the fellow survivor, who takes flight.
Cue credits.
