Following Joni Mitchell’s return to Spotify, the singer-songwriter will release The Asylum Albums (1976-1980), out June 21 via Rhino.
The box set contains a remastering of Mitchell’s albums from the late Seventies: 1976’s Hejira (1976), 1977’s Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, 1979’s Mingus, and the 1980 live album Shadows and Light. You won’t find any unreleased recordings or outtakes here; Mitchell will include those on the official Archives Vol. 4, expected later this year.
Each record on The Asylum Albums (1976-1980) was remastered from flat analong master tapes by Bernie Grundman.

Towards the end of her song “Amelia,” Samia walks into a party. “I’m writing a poem, somebody stop me,” she sings over balmy synths and a chirpy beat. It’s less of an actual threat and more a self-aware quip from the 27-year-old musician who’s better than almost anyone at turning fleeting moments into poetry.
“I love romanticizing shit, and I always have,” Samia says. “I was an internally dramatic child. There’s something really powerful and something that feels like protest sometimes in writing [my thoughts] down in a song.

Hillary Swank rallies her entire town to help out a neighbor in the latest trailer for Lionsgate’s true-life faith-based drama “Ordinary Angels.”
The two-time Oscar winner plays a hairdresser who inserts herself into the life of a grieving widower with a critically ill daughter. The kid needs a new liver, and the dad just needs a little help. As revealed in the trailer, circumstances change when a new organ becomes available for transplant, but it requires a cross-country flight and happens to occur during a once-in-a-generation cold front.
Swank won two Best Actress Oscars, one in 2000 for “Boys Don’t Cry” and one in 2005 for “Million Dollar Baby.” Although she never really became a bankable draw, she has made a career out of mostly top-billed leading roles in films like “Amelia,” “The Core” and “The Gift.” Moreover, she almost never found herself just playing the love interest or the lone woman in a macho melodrama,...

Joni Mitchell has shared her new live album At Newport, commemorating her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival.
Co-produced by Mitchell along with fellow Newport performer Brandi Carlile, the album features 12 live recordings. Throughout the performance, Mitchell and Carlile were accompanied by artists including Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. The setlist includes Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.”
Not only was Mitchell’s Newport set her first live performance in over 20 years, but it also marked a rare public appearance since she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. Mitchell’s longtime friend, filmmaker Cameron Crowe, wrote about the magic of her return in the live album’s liner notes. (You can get the physical version of the album here.)

In the offices of Dunder Mifflin (Scranton branch), salesmen, accountants and even Hr got together to decide once and for all: Is Hilary Swank hot or not? They’re referring to her looks, but one could just as easily be talking about her career. At what point was Hilary Swank hot in her career? In 2008, when the episode aired: Yeah. In the years between her Oscars? Not exactly. Now? No. So, let’s take a look and find out…Wtf Happened to…Hilary Swank?
But to truly understand what the fuck happened to Hilary Swank, we go back to the beginning. And the beginning began when she was born on July 30th, 1974, in Lincoln, Nebraska. As a youth, Swank bounced around a bit, going from Nebraska to Washington to California, developing a love for both gymnastics (Junior Olympian; state finalist) and acting (appearing in The Jungle Book at 9 as Mowgli...

Joni Mitchell has officially announced At Newport, a live album immortalizing her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. The project arrives on streaming services, CD, and 2xLP on July 28th.
Mitchell’s first live performance in 20 years came during Brandi Carlile’s set at the festival, so it’s only fair that Carlile would co-produce the live album with Mitchell herself. Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes also performed with the artists during the set, which featured Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.” Mitchell even performed a solo instrumental version of “Just Like This Train” on guitar.
At Newport also features liner notes from Cameron Crowe, who contextualizes Mitchell’s set — which followed a brain aneurysm she suffered in 2015 — with the earnest prose we’ve come...

When an all-star cast of musicians came together to rehearse their salute to Joni Mitchell for a Washington, D.C. tribute concert in February, in honor of her being the latest annual recipient of the Gershwin Prize for songwriting, executive producer Ken Ehrlich had an early epiphany about where Marcus Mumford’s cover of “Carey” should go. “During the rehearsal, it was obvious to me: that was the opening number.”

Since 2020, Mimi Webb has been making waves in the Britpop scene. The singer-songwriter from Canterbury, who started writing songs when she was just a teenager, rose to prominence on TikTok after Charlie D’Amelio featured her debut single “Before I Go” in one of her posts. Quickly, Webb gained a following by sharing the reactions of family and friends to her music. She also established herself as a bedroom pop princess with a knack for taking her massive R&b vocals and filtering them through upbeat dance-pop production to craft her soulful sound.

Hulk stories have never been the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s forte, so “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” has its work cut out for it.
The latest Marvel Disney+ series follows practicing lawyer Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) who acquires superpowers after a car accident and ends up living and working as a hulk. Created by “Rick and Morty” writer Jessica Gao and directed by “Marry Me’s” Kat Coiro, the nine-episode series is baseline enjoyable with an adventure-of-the-week structure, but doesn’t meet the potential of a captivating cast, talented writers, and MCU might.
In the comics, Jen receives a life-saving blood transfusion from cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), but the show makes things both simpler and duller: His blood drips into her open wounds after a crash, and she transforms — but with coordination and control well beyond Bruce’s best days as a Hulk, even after 15 years.

Exclusive: It’s been a while since we’ve had a raunchy female feature comedy– arguably since 2017’s Girls Trip, however, here comes D-Day from Spyglass Media Group with Schitt’s Creek‘s Emily Hampshire attached to star.
The pic, written by One Day at a Time scribes Becky Mann, Audra Sielaff and Andy Roth follows newly divorced and sexually inexperienced Kate, as she’s encouraged by her friends to get back out there. The Oscar-winning actress plays a mysterious character in Netflix’s new post-apocalyptic thriller.
The last time that Hilary Swank starred in a science fiction movie was 2003, when she played one of a team of scientists who drill deep into the Earth’s crust to save the planet in the rather out-to-lunch The Core. She’s back underground in I Am Mother, a decidedly more serious story in which she plays a mysterious character known only as Woman. Swank’s enigmatic interloper comes between a young girl named Daughter (Clara Rugaard) and an AI called Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne) when the girl lets Woman into the bunker in which she has been raised by Mother from an embryo.
The bunker, it turns out, is a repository for thousands of such embryos, stored there to restart the human race in the wake of an unknown global catastrophe. But...

Hey, "Grey's Anatomy" fans. We just found a new report from the folks over at USA Today which reveals that our main star Ellen Pompeo aka Meredith Grey (above) told them about a not-so-pleasant experience she had earlier in her career. This experience sounds pretty shocking and intense because it has to do with director James Toback. Toback is the same guy that Ellen's castmate Caterina Scorsone aka Amelia Shepherd accused of serious sexual harassment advances. Additionally, Toback has been accused of sexual harassment by more than 30 women. Ellen revealed that she's been more fortunate than these other poor ladies, but she did admit to having her own unpleasant run-in with Toback. Apparently, her encounter with him got to the point where she felt the need to tell him to go f@#ck himself! She stated, "I actually did have a situation with James Toback where I kind of told...

Hey, "Grey's Anatomy" fans. We've got some extra great news for you guys that we think you'll certainly enjoy hearing. Recently, the folks over at Deadline recently put out a report revealing that ABC is so pleased with the way the current season 14 is going that they decided to extend it! That's right. Apparently, ABC only originally ordered 22 episodes for this season, but now they've bumped that number up to a full 24. That means you guys can expect to get an additional two more episodes before this season is over. How do you guys feel about that? We're sure most of you are ecstatic about it. In addition to ABC extending out Grey's Anatomy's 14th season, Deadline also reported that ABC gave their hit comedy series "Black-ish" another two episodes, and they gave their show American Housewife another two episodes. That gave both of those series a total 24 episodes each.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Fun enough and diverting enough while you’re in the middle of it, but hints of something much richer and more satisfying dangle just out of its reach. I’m “biast” (pro): mostly like Steven Soderbergh’s films; love Adam Driver
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Well, it’s no Ocean’s Eleven. But it does include a joke about how it’s no Ocean’s Eleven, so that makes it okay, I guess?
I confess that my disappointment over Logan Lucky might be bigger than the movie deserves. It’s fun enough and diverting enough while you’re in the middle of it, as long as you don’t think about it too much. I will probably never watch it again and not be sorry about that, but that is also true of many other movies,...

Over Doctor Who's long history, what prompted the decision to leave for those in the lead role?
All sorts of things have killed off the Doctor. In the last half century, Doctor Who's unique approach to recasting the lead character has seen him fettled by old age, as punishment, by radiation poisoning, falls big and small, dodgy operations and time itself. There are plenty of in-universe reasons for why the Doctor regenerates, and the outgoing Time Lord Peter Capaldi promises that his upcoming demise will be suitably timey-wimey, but what of the behind-the-scenes reasons that the Doctor has to go?

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month.

We all know what a heartwarming Disney sports drama feels like. Glossy, sentimental, going for rousing win moments. When Ugandan-Belizean Disney executive VP production Tendo Nagenda read Tim Crothers’ 2013 Espn magazine feature about Phiona Mutesi, a chess master who rose up from selling corn in the Kampala, Uganda slum of Katwe, he knew he’d found the right story. But he knew that if it was going to resonate, this couldn’t be soft-focus or glib. He had to find a director with the sensibility to keep it real.
For that, he approached veteran New York filmmaker Mira Nair, who has also lived in the Ugandan capital of Kampala for 27 years. He invited himself to tea, and she jumped on board.
They developed “Queen of Katwe” (September 23) with writer William Wheeler. Nair finally met Mutesi when she was in New York to play against Kasperov, she told me in our interview.

Yikes. What a terrible weekend we just had, not only for the new movies released but also for the Weekend Warrior’s predictions. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Sully won its second weekend in a row with just under $22 million, but as far as the new movies, neither Lionsgate’s Blair Witch nor Universal’s Bridget Jones’s Baby did very well, putting the last nail in the coffin (hopefully) for sequels/remakes trying to play upon nostalgia that just isn’t there. (Good luck to the Rings movie opening next month!) Things have been pretty quiet lately for two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank. Mark Rylance and Spielberg on the set of "Bridge of Spies"Costume Designers are among the great unsung heroes of the cinema, regularly helping actors to define their characters and directors to create those images audiences get lost in. The latter achievement comes in tandem with the other creatives most connected to the mise-en-scène, the cinematographers and the production designers. It's perhaps not surprising that when you sit down with the behind-the-scenes professional they are often disarmingly modest, used to serving and enhancing the vision of the director. General moviegoers might not know their names but cinephiles, critics, and industry professionals are wise to learn and love them for the unique contributions they make to fine movies.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with the Polish designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone, who designed two high profile projects this year: Scott Cooper's gangster drama Black Mass and Steven Spielberg's cold war drama Bridge of Spies.

British actress Elizabeth Shepherd is best known for her dual performance as the strong-willed Lady Rowena and the ghostly Lady Ligeia opposite Vincent Price in director Roger Corman’s The Tomb Of Ligeia in 1965. Ms Shepherd has enjoyed a long career in movies and in British television since 1959 and her most recent big screen role was as Hillary Swank’s mother-in-law in the 2008 Amelia Earhart biography Amelia. However, it’s the stage is where she most loves to perform and that’s where we caught up with her for this interview as she was preparing for her role in an upcoming production of the play Pygmalion in Houston. We had invited Ms Shepherd to be a guest of honor at Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration in May of 2011 here in Price’s hometown of St. Louis, but she had committed to the play and was unable to accept our invitation.

In honour of The Times’ film critic Kevin Maher’s list of iconic movie rebels, we take a look at what it truly takes to make a tough guy in cinema.
What constitutes a tough guy, as in ‘man’, on film is usually a traditional interpretation of masculinity. There is always room for the sensitive hero in a sweater and slacks, but for those who watch movies as ingrained wish fulfilment, the sexy and sweaty man’s man needs suitable attire to reflect his personality. But it is not just about the garments themselves. A jacket is a jacket, but a leather jacket is a symbol. A wax jacket on the other hand is enlightened – the reformist hero.
Waxed cotton is fantastic stuff. Essentially it is a treated fabric, albeit one that needs regular re-covering to ensure longevity. The result is a lightweight, versatile material that, although not especially warm,...

West Hollywood — On Wednesday it was Reese. On Thursday it was Shailene. On Friday it was Jennifer… …Aniston. Yes, this year's Best Actress contenders continued to celebrate their films with awards season events and Thursday night featured a special screening of Daniel Barnz's "Cake," where a post-show party at the Sunset Tower Hotel found Aniston, obviously, the center of attention. "Cake" stars Aniston as Claire, a woman whose life has come to something of a stand still because of chronic pain she's suffered from a major car accident. It's an impressive performance by the popular actress that I praised in my review of the film from the Toronto Film Festival a few months ago, and hinted she could be an awards season player. Speaking to Aniston Friday night, she admitted that after some roles, directors and producers "box" you into a certain mold for a certain kind of a movie.

Do the Hollywood Film Awards matter? Ask publicists and film marketers eager to lap up any and all opportunities to position movies and talent this time of year, then yeah, they do. Have they long been a ham-fisted attempt to capitalize on awards season and a scheme to line one ambitious individual's pockets? Ask the same group and you'll get another affirmative. "I don't want to deal with this, but I guess I have to," one deflated publicist told me of the upcoming show, which will be broadcast for the first time ever on CBS Friday. When Ben Affleck dutifully takes the stage to accept the organization's best film prize for David Fincher's "Gone Girl" (which is the current plan according to multiple sources), for the modest audience that bothers to watch on a Friday night, it will look like a timely shot of adrenaline for a box office...

Hilary Swank already has two best actress Oscars on her shelf, for Boys Don’t Cry (1999) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), which is something that only 12 other women have ever been able to claim. But, having only just turned 40, she is not resting on her laurels. Since her second win, in 2005, she has pursued a number of projects that were clearly intended to be awards bait, but that failed to resonate with voters: The Black Dahlia (2006), Freedom Writers(2007), Amelia (2009) and Conviction (2010).

Let's dust off the old part-time specialty feature "Oscar Bait" with some news on an acquisition, shall we? Now, this time last year a lot of eyes were turned toward Naomi Watts in what seemed like a baity role as Princess Diana in "Diana." Then the film waited for a distributor, and waited, and waited. The writing was on the wall by the time Entertainment One grabbed it and it went nowhere with critics, audiences and, certainly, awards-voting bodies. This year, the upstart distributor has another play that may or may not work out on the circuit, "You're Not You" starring two-time Best Actress Oscar winner Hilary Swank. Emmy Rossum, Josh Duhamel, Loretta Divine, Ernie Hudson and Marcia Gay Harden also star. Here's the official synopsis: "'You're Not You' centers on the relationship between Kate (Swank), a woman who has been immobilized by Als - also known as...

Through films like Flightplan, Soul Plane, and White House Down, it has taken over a decade for Hollywood to arrive at Non-Stop.
Showing the vitality of Liam Neeson carrying a gun and a broken heart, Non-Stop recently gave the new action hero one of his biggest box office weekends so far. Involving an air marshal using a particular set of skills to hunt and kill someone threatening his plane (to paraphrase Taken), the film may seem like a generic Neeson actioner. But while his character might be a composite of previous roles, the anxiety he tackles within this film is fresh. Considering its box office success (and my mother’s intense experience in watching the movie), Non-Stop works efficiently as a thriller in 2014 because it provides viewers with imagery of in-flight chaos not seen since before 9/11. It is also the indication of a natural progression for how Hollywood films are...

After years in development, it appears that all the pieces are finally falling into place for the Miles Davis biopic Kill the Trumpet Player. Don Cheadle is set to portray Davis and will also direct the film, working from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Steven Baigelman. Ewan McGregor and Zoe Saldana will take on supporting roles.
Though Davis was one of the most influential musicians of all time, Hollywood has never before succeeded in bringing his fascinating life story to the big screen. Kill the Trumpet Player will adopt an unconventional structure to communicate Davis’ personality. According to the official press release, the film will tell “the story of a few dangerous days in the life of Miles Davis, the virtuoso, fighter and genius, as he bursts out of his silent period and conspires with a Rolling Stone writer (McGregor) to steal back his music.”

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing and this October we see a couple of items that we could certainly circle as potential Cannes 2014 bait. Thanks to our friends at Production Weekly for the helping hand in curating our list of future must see items.
Among the top foreign film productions, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover‘s Peter Greenaway is looking at a late October, possible November start to begin filming a fragment of the great Soviet master filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein’s bio timeline. Eisenstein In Guanajuato will cover the portion of the filmmaker’s post Battleship Potemkin career, with Eisenstein landing in Mexico after Hollywood studios balked at the idea of working with him and in its place finds romance. The Girl Who Played with Fire‘s Daniel Alfredson...
