Broken Lizard, the five-man comedy troupe which formed in 1990 at a fraternity on the upstate New York campus of preppy Colgate University, have been stoner icons since the very first scene of their 2001 breakout hit “Super Troopers.” That’s when Jay Chandrasekhar’s mustachioed Vermont cop Lieutenant Arcot “Thorny” Ramathorn pulls over a car full of potheads and proceeds to terrorize and freak them out.
Like they did in 2018 with “Super Troopers 2,” their newest film, “Quasi,” a reimagining of Victor Hugo’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” is a no-holds-barred, scatological combination of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” crossed with Mel Brooks’ “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” It premieres today — April 20 — as a Hulu Original through Fox Searchlight.

Whenever people whine about movies that "couldn't be made today," they're usually referring to comedy films with a grossly outdated sense of humor or storylines that are blatantly discriminatory. Seldom are they referring to the truly ridiculous swings of comedy films made from the 1970s-1990s, a style that has mostly dissolved into our collective memories and only reappears when some brave soul makes an absurd laugh riot like "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar."
The sad result of every blockbuster franchise slowly attempting to push us into a nostalgia-mad monoculture has been a lack of weirdo cinema. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of folks out there making unique films, but they're typically released independently and without the marketing budget or publicity they deserve. This makes greenlighting offbeat comedies a risky move for studios and denies audiences fresh, experimental comedy adventures. The Broken Lizard comedy troupe...

A colleague of mine, Marc Edward Heuck, once compared the films of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe to 7-Eleven hot dogs. The comparison was meant to be favorable. In both cases, the thinking went, the artisans in question know full well that they are not offering haute cuisine. Instead, the consumer is getting something efficiently constructed, barely flavorful enough, and perfect for a night when the edibles hit a little harder than expected. Broken Lizard's films have never elevated beyond the realm of raunchy, frat boy-style chuckle-fests, but have possessed just enough zingers, oddball gags, and precision-strike profanity to entrench themselves in the friendly cult trench inside the human brain. They possess an affable, thrown-off quality that makes them weirdly appealing, even as the jokes periodically fall flat.
Their newest film, "Quasi," directed by Kevin Heffernan, and written by the entire troupe is a "Carry On"-style sendup of Victor Hugo...

As explained on their website, Broken Lizard is a five-person comedy filmmaking group “devoted to intense sunshine, Floridian deep tissue massage, and the advanced study of keeping it realism.” The quintet is most famous for “Super Troopers” but has also made comedies like “Beerfest,” “Club Dread,” “The Slammin’ Salmon,” and “Puddle Cruiser.”

After returning for “Super Troopers 2” in 2018, the group—which comprises director Jay Chandrasekhar and writer/actors Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske— have returned once more for a new hunchback-in-love comedy called “Quasi.”
This new one features the same gang, Steve Lemme, Kevin Heffernan, Jay Chandrasekhar, and Erik Stolhanske, but also adds Adrianne Palicki as the damsel of the picture set in medieval times.

I'm curious to see how filmmakers cast Cobie Smulders in the future. She's had an interesting decade with "How I Met Your Mother" launching her to prominence. A mere ten years ago, she was one of the young stars of ABC's flash-in-a-pan series "Veritas: The Quest," but once she was part of the break-out ensemble comedy that's wrapping things up with a controversial final season right now, it seems like she would suddenly start getting bigger roles. Oddly, that's not how it has played out. I like "The Slammin' Salmon," and I think she's funny in it, but that's the biggest...

Sequels are awesome, plain and simple. Returning to familiar characters and worlds we love is like covering yourself with a warm blanket, although when a sequel is bad it can be like a blanket covered in potato bugs and lice. Studios love sequels because seven times out of ten they open huge, no matter how good they are.
With that in mind, here's 50 of your favorite titles all preparing to get new installments. Some of them are deep into pre-production while others have barely gotten out of the pitch stages, but you'll be salivating at the thought of some of these sweet babies finally making their way to the screen.

It's kind of hard to believe it's been twelve years since Super Troopers first was released, and I don't think I've seen it since it was in theaters. I honestly never thought of or expected to see a sequel for the movie, but it looks like the Broken Lizard comedy troupe is getting back together to give us one! Since Super Troopers they've made a few other comedies such as Club Dread, Beerfest, The Slammin' Salmon, The Babymakers, and Freeloaders, none of which have been as good or funny as their first film.
Apparently Super Troopers 2 secured financing back in 2009, but writers and the studio couldn't agree on a script. Now in a recent interview with Guy Speed, Kevin Heffernan, who played Farva, said that the sequel could start shooting this year!
There will be a Super Troopers sequel. We put it off for a while and then came back to it.

The original Super Troopers premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and played in theaters a year later in February of 2002, and questions of a sequel have persisted ever since. The Broken Lizard comedy troupe has since made Club Dread, Beerfest, The Slammin' Salmon, The Babymakers, and Freeloaders, but it's safe to say that none of those follow-up projects were as iconic as the group's breakout effort. But it looks like they're going back to what worked, as Guy Speed (via ScreenCrush) has an interview with Kevin Heffernan (who played Farva) who says the comedy sequel could finally get underway this year. Read on! We last heard that Super Troopers 2 secured financing way back in 2009, but though multiple drafts were written, it sounds like the writers and the studio couldn't agree on a script, until now. Here's what Heffernan told Guy Speed: “There will be a Super Troopers sequel. We...

American actor best known for his film role as the gentle giant in The Green Mile
Every character actor who has ever been typecast dreams of a role that will transcend the cliches of his image. For Michael Clarke Duncan, who has died aged 54 of complications from a heart attack suffered in July, that breakout role also drew on the hidden truth of his own personality, and the results were spectacular.
Duncan was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor in The Green Mile (1999), the film of the Stephen King story in which he plays John Coffey, a gentle giant with extraordinary powers, on death row for raping and killing two young girls. The film's climax, when Coffey, innocent of the crimes but having punished the real killer and an evil guard, goes to the electric chair telling Tom Hanks not to put a hood over his head because...

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan has passed away at the age of 54, from complications suffered from a heart attack he had in July.
Known for his big build and deep voice, Duncan was in the prime of his life. His first movie role was in 1995's Friday, and he had several small parts playing bouncers and muscle men. It wasn't until 1997's Armageddon that he had a meatier role with more lines, playing one of the rough-and-tumble drilling crew drafted into blowing up an approaching asteroid.
In 1999 Duncan received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Green Mile. Based on the Stephen King novel and directed by Frank Darabont, Duncan played a mentally challenged prisoner named John Coffee who possessed a supernatural ability to heal. The role showed that Duncan could play characters that were more dimensional than their brusier exterior.
Duncan worked extensively throughout the 2000s.

The Babymakers is not a Broken Lizard movie, though it could certainly be mistaken for one since it stars core members Kevin Heffernan and Jay Chandrasekhar, features a few small roles for fan favorites like M.C. Gainey and Nat Faxon, and was directed by Chandrasekhar, who also helmed Super Troopers, Club Dread and Beerfest (Heffernan directed the trope's last film, The Slammin' Salmon). Plus, it has a plot that seems tailor made for the minds behind said films: A married couple are having trouble conceiving a baby due to the husband's "confused sperm," so to prove that he did at one time have what it takes, he'll do whatever it now takes to get his last remaining swimmers back from the center he donated them to years earlier, even if that means...

I have to admit to feeling kind of sorry for Paul Schneider. While Parks and Recreation started becoming a much better show in its second season, its recently completed third season was a revelation that turned the program into must-watch television. What does this have to do with Schneider? His run as City Planner Mark Brendanawicz ended with second season finale. Not to worry, though. The actor has landed on his feet and has taken a role with another group of very funny comedians. Variety reports that Schneider has been cast in the lead role of the next Broken Lizard film, The Baby Makers. The troupe's first film since 2009's The Slammin' Salmon, Jay Chandrasekhar will be returning to the director's chair and will be using a script written by Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow. In the film, Schneider will play a married man who is having trouble conceiving a...

Soter was drawn to the project by the history of the property and the fact that this is a chance to create a world where normal rules of life, physics and everything else does not exist. When I first read the casting rumours for Nick Fury's assistant in The Avengers, my initial thought was, "Who the hell cares?", and while my general feeling towards this news story hasn't really changed all that much, there are a couple of things that probably make it worth posting. First of all, I should have realized that in the world of comics, there are very rarely any characters that exist strictly as civilians... virtually everyone has a secret identity and/or super power. In this case, according to Deadline.com [1], the character in question is Maria Hill, a trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who took over as director for a time. Although director Joss Whedon was reportedly meeting with a number of candidates, Heat Vision [2] is now claiming that this is basically a done deal, with Cobie Smulders in final negotiations for the role. Smulder is best known as Robin Scherbatsky...

As a Latina female currently defending my dissertation on 19th Century English Romance Fiction, I am clearly the most suited person to write about this film. The question is, do I need to be? Should I only be qualified to speak on certain cultural aspects of films if I fall within their demographic? It's unfair that when a filmmaker of any ethnicity makes a film, suddenly it's expected to speak for that entire culture. But what if the film itself tries to make that claim? From Prada to Nada touts itself as "a Latina take on Sense and Sensibility." But when all the jokes are about stealing hubcaps or immigration, when all the Mexican characters are basically janitors or housemaids, when all the Spanish being spoken is pretty much menu items or shouting "Aye yo mio!" or "Madre dios!," whose fault is that? Latinos get treated like Asians -- sure...

The "Tekken" games have been coming out for more than 15 years, and the series stands as one of the most popular fighting game franchises ever. They're full of the kind of quintessentially Japanese quirks and cultural references that people think about when they imagine that country's pop culture: Pandas that do kung-fu with glow bracelets on, cyborg ninjas who do a hara-kiri move to stab themselves and the enemies behind them, a brooding young heir to a powerful corporation who also can turn into a demon. That kind of stuff.
There've been animated versions of the "Tekken" saga made in Japan and a Western live-action version has been in the works for nearly a decade. After lots of personnel changes, production wrapped more than a year ago but the film was still angling for a distributor. Anchor Bay--who released last years' "The Slammin' Salmon"--recently announced that they'd picked up the Us distro rights.

Pirate Radio: "Richard Curtis' Pirate Radio represents something of the inverse of that expression: It's way too much cake, you've got to eat it all, and there's no goddamn milk to wash it down with. You know it's slim pickings on DVD this week when the biggest new release is Pirate Radio (aka The Boat That Rocked) the British '60s rock n roll comedy that bombed in North American theatres last year. However, this does give a few films that are essentially direct-to-dvd releases a chance to stand out including Defendor starring Woody Harrelson, Broken Lizard's lastest comedy The Slammin' Salmon, and Uwe Boll's surprisingly well-reviewed prison drama Stoic. I just don't know how many more chances I can take with the boys from Broken Lizard. The comedy troupe, consisting of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske, made an incredibly divisive comedy that I adore, Super Troopers. Then they made the incredibly bad Club Dread, and followed it up with the entertaining, but somewhat disappointing Beerfest.
It's been a decidedly mixed bag for them. Then, a few weeks ago I was able to catch The Slammin' Salmon with Prisco and... wow. Wow. That is a bad fuckin' movie. Monumentally so. We may have chuckled once or twice, but otherwise it was dead, stonefaced silence for 90 straight minutes. So the question is, was Super Troopers simply comedic lightning in a bottle?
Well, Broken Lizard is giving it another go. This time, they'll play college professors (!) in Rogue Scholars for Universal Pictures, according to Dark Horizons.

Broken Lizard is basically a boy band with one commercial hit that you really liked, but as they release progressively worse albums, you keep trying to convince yourself that they're still good. Super Troopers was pretty funny, but since then, they've steadily been shitting the bed with the follow-ups. They're like alumni at frat house parties. Yeah, it's cool you could do eternal kegstands when you were 20. But now you're 40; lay off. Most of their comedy revolves around weed or booze references, peppered with the occasional slur or crudity. The Slammin' Salmon is like a stoner comedy that they forgot to put drug references in. The plot tries to stretch a bad sitcom premise over hand colored pencil sketches of characters with humor watered down like drinks at a Methodist wedding. It's like someone started to tell a joke and then drifted off halfway through and never got to the punchline,...

Chris Pine and Olivia Munn's romance is not yet over. A day after they were reported to have split, a source close to the "Star Trek" actor and "The Slammin' Salmon" beauty have debunked the rumor, saying "They are not broken up. They are just having fun and being casual."
Although the two allegedly kept their distance while attending the NY Times Style Magazine's Golden Globes cocktail party on Friday, January 15, Chris and Olivia were reportedly being affectionate to each other at another event on the same night. "They remained inseparable during the night," an eyewitness who saw the pair at the Buffalo Club CAA party in L.A. told Us Magazine. "Constantly whispering, holding hands and sharing a cup of hot mint tea."

It’s an Attack of the Show! special unlike any other when Olivia Munn enlists Eva Amurri to recreate the James Cameron film Avatar on G4’s Olivia! The Munn-der Years, which airs Dec. 28. In one new sketch, Munn and Amurri channel Thelma & Louise, with Amurri tackling the Louise role originated by her mother, Susan Sarandon. "It’s like the sequel to Thelma & Louise," Munn tells People. "She’s got the blue bandana and we both wore the jean shorts. It’s awesome! It’s like, what happens after we drive off the cliff? We drive off a cliff and then open up into Avatar,...

You won’t find Broken Lizard on many of the ubiquitous decade wrap-ups that have begun to permeate the blogosphere, but in Super Troopers and Beerfest the troupe made their mark on comedies in the ‘00s. Both films have become cult classics with significant re-watch value, each a fine rendition of the art of big, broad, stupid frat boy humor. In The Slammin’ Salmon, their latest, the boys (Kevin Heffernan, Jay Chandrasekhar, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske) play waiters engaged in a Glengarry Glen Ross like competition over one night at a restaurant owned by “Slammin” Cleon Salmon (Michael Clarke Duncan), an ex-boxing champ. It’s out in theaters this weekend in the following markets: Austin, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Portland, Washington D.C. and Seattle. Should it perform well expect a relatively quick expansion. Film School Rejects spoke with Kevin Heffernan, aka Farva, about...

Before The Slammin' Salmon, I wouldn't have called myself a fan of the boys from the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, though I have some mild, slightly embarrassed affection for Super Troopers and Club Dread. But Salmon is 90 minutes of truly inspired comic mayhem. With valuable assists from the rest of their cast, Broken Lizard has crafted the funniest film of SXSW - and they had some fine competition. I know I said that you can't trust me, but trust me: this is great stuff.
Broken Lizard is Jay Chandrasekhar, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske and Kevin Heffernan. Heffernan directed and the entire troupe is credited for the screenplay. But in a shrewd move, The Slammin' Salmon revolves around an outsider: Michael Clarke Duncan, who plays a boxer-turned-restaurant owner named Cleon Salmon, a.k.a. "The Champ." Over the years of promoting Broken Lizard's films, I've participated in many eyebrow raising PR events. I remember wearing a gorilla costume wrapped in tinfoil and marching around the Angelika Theater in NYC. When we were promoting Super Troopers we went to a tire store ribbon cutting in cop uniforms, a mall opening in cop uniforms and fought with a PR exec over the intellectual justifications for doing Radio interviews in our cop uniforms. We even involuntarily participated in a drinking contest in an Australian beer garden which would ultimately inspire another movie of ours, Beerfest. But this week we experienced a uniquely memorable promotional angle as we pimped the opening of our new film The Slammin' Salmon (December 11th). The movie is set in a seafood restaurant and our distributor, Anchor Bay Films, suggested we do...

It's hard to believe that Broken Lizard — the comedy troupe responsible for "Super Troopers," "Club Dread" and "Beerfest" — hasn't released a movie since 2006. Luckily, that all changes today with "The Slammin' Salmon," the newest comedy from Broken Lizard regulars Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske.
I haven't seen the film yet, but considering my affinity for Broken Lizard's previous efforts, I'm sure I'll be delighted by this latest film. Broken Lizard tends to deliver movies that require multiple viewings — the jokes get funnier and funnier every time you start the film over.
From the "Super Troopers" opening to the various death scenes in "Club Dread," the highlights of Broken Lizard's career are well documented — but let's not forget some of the more underrated moments from this ragtag group of comedians. Here are some of my favorite less appreciated Broken Lizard scenes.

Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske together form Broken Lizard, the irreverent comedy troupe behind such films as Super Troopers, Club Dread and Beerfest. In their new film and Heffernan's directorial debut, The Slammin' Salmon, the Lizards are teamed with Oscar nominee Michael Clarke Duncan:
"Slammin" Cleon Salmon (Duncan) is a former Heavyweight Champion of the World turned celebrity owner of a high end Miami seafood restaurant, The Slammin' Salmon. A terrifying bull of a man, Salmon uses fear to rule over his misfit wait staff and on this particular night, he takes his bullying skills to a new level. In an effort to pay off a gambling debt to the Japanese Yakuza, Salmon sets up a contest to "inspire" his wait staff to sell more food than they ever have before. Kind of a slow week for mid-December, but we do have two major releases with potential Oscar buzz going head-to-head: Clint Eastwood's Invictus and Disney's The Princess and the Frog. It's hard to say how well either will do, but I think the smart money is on Disney. Still, you have to wonder... is a 2-D animated film now too much of an oddity for the average moviegoer? Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones hits theatres this weekend as well, but it is playing on just 3 screens. The movie is being held back from the majority of viewers until January 15th, perhaps because of negative early reviews. Other movies in limited release are Tom Ford's A Single Man and Broken Lizard's latest comedy, The Slammin' Salmon. Will you be checking anything out this weekend? The Princess and the Frog [1] (wide) Invictus [2] The Lovely Bones [3] (limited) A Single Man...

It's finally time for another Broken Lizard movie. In case you need a refresher: Broken Lizard is a comedy troupe featuring the comedic talents of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Paul Soter, Steve Lemme and Erik Stolhanske. As a group, they are responsible for the cult comedies "Super Troopers," "Club Dread" and "Beerfest."
Their latest, "The Slammin' Salmon" (featured in this week's unLimited), sees the group working in a restaurant owned by a profane retired boxer, played by Michael Clarke Duncan. Hilarity ensues as the champ demands that his staff attract record business in a single night. "Salmon" marks the directorial debut of Kevin Heffernan, who notably played Rod Farva in "Troopers."

There's a saying that you can't go home again, but obviously no one told that to Broken Lizard's Steve Lemme who worked at City Crab on Park and 19th for six years, an experienced that acted as the catalyst for the comedy team to make The Slammin' Salmon , their fifth feature film. Back in New York to wrap-up their six-month cross-country comedy tour, Lemme and the guys--Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske--found themselves back at City Crab to do interviews for the movie as well as to host an absolutely crazy "Salmon Chowder Eating Contest" that brought out the best of the best in competitive eating to chow down large bowls of cold chowder which looked like it had the consistency of glue. (You can see some of our pictures from the event here...

This past weekend, "Up in the Air" made more than $1 million on 15 screens while "Transylmania" took in only $250,000 (roughly) on more than 1,000 screens. So you see, limited release doesn't mean limited box office gross, and it certainly doesn't mean limited appeal. Of course, "Up in the Air" stars George Clooney. This week's three spotlighted films opening in limited release don't have that luxury, yet each has enough appeal to enough of a built-in audience that I won't be surprised to see all of them do relatively well with the screens their given.

There's only a single brand-new wide release this week, and it's "Invictus." Set in post-apartheid South Africa, the story follows Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) as he joins with the country's national rugby team captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) in the hopes of uniting his scattered nation. In addition to featuring a dynamite cast, "Invictus" also happens to be the latest directorial effort from Clint Eastwood.
Also getting a big opening this week is Disney's triumphant return to 2-D animation with "The Princess and the Frog," which was previously only available in limited release. It opens on more than 3,000 screens this weekend, an even higher number than the 2,000+ for "Invictus." It's a (somewhat) contemporary fairy tale about young New Orleans girl who sets out to find a local voodoo priestess after she is magically transformed into a frog.

Who knew that a football movie would have such strong legs? In its third week, The Blind Side managed to take over the box office and finally topple New Moon to become #1 over the weekend with $20.4 million. So far it has earned $129 million domestically. A huge, huge hit for Warner Brothers. New Moon took a small bite out of the box office, coming in second place with $15.7 million. It has earned almost $500 million dollars worldwide. The power of teen angst.Brothers had an ok debut with $9.7 million. I have yet to see it, but if Tobey is bug eyed through most of this like he is in the trailer, it should be fun to watch.Armored tanked in its debut, coming in 6th with $6.6 million. Nobody was interested probably because they saw the entire movie in the trailer. Remember studios, we don't need to know everything. Keep us in the dark and at least interested.

While they are out promoting their most recent film The Slammin' Salmon -- for which we just posted a trailer the other day -- the fine gentlemen of Broken Lizard have been talking to the press. And anytime these guys talk to the press, the prospect of a sequel to their cult hit Super Troopers is bound to come up. In speaking with Movie Cutlists, Troopers director Jay Chandrasekhar said that they "have the financing So we're going to try to make a deal with Fox." Star Steve Lemme added that they were "three drafts into" a script for Super Troopers 2 and with the independent financing they've already secured, it should make getting a studio deal a lot easier. When talking details of the plot, the Lizard guys weren't saying much. Though they did reveal that Brian Cox, who pretty much stole the first one as Captain O'Hagan, will definitely be in the sequel. I'm a huge fan of Broken Lizard, so much so that I'll even defend the widely panned "Club Dread" until I'm blue in the face. But like most lovers of the comedy troupe, I'm most at home with "Super Troopers," their glorious highway cop movie filled with pranks, schemes, ugly truck drivers, Shenanigans and tons of hilarity.
Given my affinity for that movie, I'm understandably psyched about today's news that a "Super Troopers" sequel is officially in the works. During an interview with Movie Cultists to promote the upcoming film "The Slammin' Salmon," the Broken Lizard gang offered a quick update on the much hoped-for sequel.
"We have the financing," said "Super Troopers" director and star Jay Chandrasekhar. "So we're going to try to make a deal with Fox."

Broken Lizard has been following a similar path to M. Night Shyamalan. Both opened strong in terms of films -- think Sixth Sense and Super Troopers -- but both have been on a slippery slope of films that can't make a mark. In their latest attempt, Broken Lizard gives us The Slammin' Salmon and I do have to say that it looks pretty good... So far.

The world is always in need of more Broken Lizard. We're 31 days away from the release of The Slammin' Salmon and we finally get a poster. So, it's not the best poster ever, but who cares?! This movie is going to be hilarious. You've got the guys from Lizard doing what they do best: being f*cking ridiculous. There hasn't been too much talk for the movie, which is unfortunate. The trailer is heavy on the Michael Clarke Duncan who plays the owner of the restaurant, Mr. Salmon himself....
