That Was Fun
Gislef23 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In an episode that is pretty much a comedy, a bunch of werecreatures get together at a meeting of Shapeshifters Anonymous. Their newest member, Robert, is troubled that he might be killing people.

The others, including a werecheetah, a wereturtle, and a wereboar (and a furry!) , assure Robert that it's okay. And that Kris Kringle has actually been tasked by God to kill all werecreatures with his "Satan's Claws"), and has an army of helper (mall Santas) helping him. They storm the church, the werecreatures defend themselves, and then get a potion from their final member, Ryan, that lets them turn into their animal forms so they can fight Kringle.

It turns out that Ryan is the First Werecreature, Bob, but the furry decapitates Kringle before he and Ryan can fight. She can't turn into her desired werehippo form, but does make a wish on Kringle's body and gets Lil Yachty (??) and a million dollars. The end.

The Christmas Special is comedy through and through, except for some horrific scenes near the end where werecreatures decapitate men dressed as Santa and pull out their intestines. Even then, the graphic disembowelments are portrayed in the most inoffensive, comic book style possible. At least, by 2020 standards. If you're old school, your opinion may vary.

Nobody really has much personality. Robert is a schlub, Irene the werecheetah is oversexed, Andy the wereboar is a self-centered pig, Scott the wereturtle is an ex-Marine and exposition machine., Phyllis the furry is your typical sassy TV black woman, so don't expect any originality there.

Derek Russo as Ryan/Bob doesn't have much to do. I do like his bemusement at the end that it was so easy to kill Kringle, just by Phyllis cutting off his head. And you do get to see a lot of his abs at the end.

Overall, the Holiday Special is a disposable... holiday special. It comes across as more of a 'Tales From the Crypt' episode with the over-the-top humor, but 'Creepshow' in its first season had a fair amount of humor, too. But the comedy is up-front here. Don't go in expecting too much except for the weird alternate history (Kringle gives toys to the orphans he's created) and you won't be disappointed.

The special starts a bit slow, and doesn't really pick up speed until the Kringle connection is brought in. Nobody really has anything outstanding to do: Anna Camp is cute as the sex-crazed schoolteacher/werecheetah. Pete Burris as Scott the Wereturtle has a pretty thankless role as the exposition machine, but he manages to bring some characterization to the part. And... I have no idea who Lil Yachty is. Sorry.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?

Happy Creep-Mas.
morrison-dylan-fan24 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Whilst I liked the Creepshow (1982) flick,I was presently surprised by how strong the first season of Creepshow was, thanks to it retaining the pulpy roots, and at the same time opening up to more psychological Chiller tales (the Tricia Helfer- starring Lydia Layne's Better Half segment being a outstanding highlight.) Learning that a new issue had come out for the holidays,I got set for a creepy Christmas.

View on the film:

Taking a major departure from the rest of the series, by having this X-Mas special contain one story, rather than the typical two, director Greg Nicotero thankfully keeps the extended tale from running dry,by bouncing in a wonderfully fantastical, pulpy atmosphere hitting murderous Santa's who get taken down by tasty KNB practical effects bringing shape-shifters howling to life.

Before taking the sleigh to jet-black comedic splatter shocks, Nicotero turns the pages on dead-pan laughs in the Shapeshifters Anonymous support group, with Adam Pally bringing a sweet nervousness to werewolf Weston clawing his way into the pages of Creepshow.

A creepy Christmas! Evil and killer Santas!
blanbrn25 December 2020
This a "Creepshow Holiday Special:Shapeshifters Anonymous" in what is referred to as the season 2 first episode is a real cheesy like treat as it puts a wicked and strange twist on Christmas. It involves a man Weston(Adam Polly) who all of a sudden thinks and feels he might be a werewolf so he decides to join a local club of apparent monsters and want to be animals called Shapeshifters Anonymous. And upon his visit he meets a sexy like cougar named Irena(Anna Camp). Only some frightful news is learned around the holiday a group of demented and killer Claus like red suit Santa's are on the prowl! The episode is a little far out still it pays homage to the Christmas holiday in a "Creepshow" like way making it a watch for fans of the movie and TV franchises.

A Wild Christmas Showdown.
meddlecore22 December 2021
Shapeshifters Anonymous is the holiday special released at the end of season 1 of Shudder's new Creepshow series.

We find ourselves following Robert Weston, who has been waking up, only to crap out a number of mysterious objects...things ike buttons, strips of clothing...and, most concerningly, pieces of human bones.

In fact, he's beginning to think that he might actually be the local ripper...who has been leaving a mass of dead bodies in his wake.

The only thing is...he never has any memories of what happens.

He only experiences the aftermath of effects.

Eventually, however, he starts to investigate...which leads him to find a support group called S. A., at a nearby church, that might be able to help him understand his condition.

S. A. Stands for "Shapeshifters Anonymous".

They are a group of therianthropes who believe that they change into a variety of were-type creatures on the full moon (although there is also one furry).

The other members include a were-cheetah, a were-pig, and there's even a were-tortoise.

All of whom help him take a number of tests designed to discern exactly what type of shapeshifter he actually is.

Turns out he is a traditional lycanthrope (more typically known as a werewolf)...borrrring...who has a particular taste for evil people...like gangsters, violent thieves, and child abusers.

He figures that he acquired the curse from a gypsy woman who took offense to how loud he brushed his teeth.

The problem is that he's already eaten her- and her dog- so she can no longer be asked to break the curse.

Thus, he must accept his newfound fate.

There's just one thing he has to worry about, however...

The group claims that God, through Jesus, blessed the disciple Bob with the gift of lycanthropy, so that he could hunt down and consume evil.

But when Bob became prideful of his accomplishments, God turned on him, and gave one of his enemies- Christopher- a red suit of impenetrable armour.

Tasking him with checking Bob's as yet unfettered power.

Christopher- as you might have guessed- is Kris Kringle.

But he wasn't able to stop Bob alone.

So he had to turn to Lucifer for help.

Lucifer gave him a set of claws- forged in Hell- and a legion of demonic elves to help him succeed on his mission.

Thus, from this point on, Christopher would take on an anagram of Satan as his moniker: officially becoming Santa.

Now, these two opposing forces are constantly warring with one another.

And, as a result, Santa has left so many orphans in his wake, after slaying their parents, that he has since become obligated to give gifts to children on Christmas Eve.

With his elves manifesting as your average salvation army bell ringer or department store santa.

All of whom are on the hunt for these therianthropes.

And, as a result of his recent activities...Weston has led them right to them all.

So a Christmas Eve showdown is about to go down.

The only question is, who will come out victorious in this war of the ages?

Nicotero is most well known as a special effects expert (particularly for his work on The Walking Dead), but he both wrote and directed this utter cheesefest, himself.

I've got to give it to him...the creature effects in this are downright awesome.

And Santa is a force to be reckoned with.

But Nicotero is not the best director.

Luckily, there is enough effects and action to keep you preoccupied and distracted from it's weaker points.

In the end, it's really quite a cheesey fun time.

Certainly worth a watch if you're looking for a fun Christmas horror-comedy that isn't too short or too long.

Very funny!
heatherburton-3703112 December 2021
I really enjoyed this one. I'm a longtime fan of Creepshow and I'll admit there are some episodes that are not very good, but I really enjoyed this one. It's very funny and gives a new twist on the history of Santa Clause that is sure to get a laugh!

Easily the best capture of a very specific gene
kim_wasmuth26 December 2021
This is the most earnest yet campy horror/holiday film that sets the standard for the gene. If you like anything creepshow/tales from the crypt/horror comic, you will truly enjoy this and consider making it a Christmas standard. The silliness yet believability of this horror flick keeps it lite but engaging. I can only imagine the conversations that lead to this script. Well shot too. Completely recommend.
