This is almost a hate crime...
ethal-106115 August 2018
If you're looking for 90 minutes of a fundamentalist Christian filmmaker portraying homeless people as mindless zombies, Hispanic people as criminals and drug dealers, and Amish people as mentally challenged, I guess this is the movie for you. Additionally, a fundamentalist Christian mocking someone else's beliefs is one of the most hypocritical things imagineable...

This is one bizarre movie
steiner-sam25 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is a (slapstick) Christian comedy set primarily in Los Angeles and an unidentified Amish community. David A. R. White is a Christian filmmaker who I believe grew up the son of a minister in an independent Mennonite congregation in Kansas with Kleine Gemeinde Mennonite roots. He attended Moody Bible Institute for a time but went to Hollywood to make his fortune. He is the co-founder of Pure Flix Entertainment.

Roy Weichbrodt (English: Soft Bread); David A. R. White)) is a naïve Amish boy ready for his "Rumm Springa" days away from the Amish. He wants to be a missionary to Hollywood, and to find his uncle Brian (also David A. R. White), who has been in Rumm Springa for 20 years. When he arrives he learns that Brian is deeply involved in Hollywood, but considers himself to be an undercover holy man, even though his lifestyle reflects otherwise.

Brian introduces Roy to some movie people, and by happenstance Roy disarms a robber that is threatening the producer, Anne (Andrea Logan White). Roy ends up in a TV series starring him as Satan along with a sexy, over-the-top co-star, Tiffany Towers (Jennifer Lyons). Anne and Roy and attracted to each other, but to increase publicity for the show, Roy and Tiffany pose as a couple and go to nightclubs and such. One night Roy finally gets drunk and goes back to Tiffany's, but is too drunk to perform.

Eventually Anne fires Roy and he ends up selling hot dogs on the street, dressed up as a hot dog. He rediscovers his core Christian values and begins to witness his faith again. Roy and Anne reconcile, get married, and launch an Amish reality TV show.

This is one bizarre movie. It tries to be funny, but seems to offend many evangelical Christians who are a target audience. The humor is very broad, but still manages to be borderline offensive. Its portrayal of the Amish has no connection to reality and stereotypes them as fiddle-playing bumpkins. There is also one scene that seems to stereotype Hispanics as well.

it is that bad
lagudafuad17 December 2012
When I saw the name of the movie, Holyman Undercover I was fooled to think some form of espionage like mission impossible thing was going to happen. My rate of disappointment when I realized that none of the above took place cannot be expressed with words, but I wasnâ(TM)t deterred I went along with the movie expecting to be surprised and boy, wasnâ(TM)t I.

Given the privilege top screen movies before it gets recommended to the Church, I went on a DVD hunt for Christian movies; I picked many and sat for a marathon, when I came across this movie I had to pause and check again to be sure this is meant to be a Christian movie.

The thing is when a Christian movie starts to have sexual undertones, which are not hidden mind you, I start to wonder what message are they trying to pass. The makers are trying to make it seem that the lead character Roy was in a state where he was trapped with between this modern life and what he believes in.

Roy then goes undercover playing any acting gig he can get and dropping lines that will help win people to Christ.

I have written over 250 reviews this is my first 1 star rating, this movie is so bad that I felt insulted that this movie has the name of my savior beside it, the problem is not the bogus acting (hey it is meant to be a comedy, a ridiculous one at that) neither is it the bad costumes which was a plague in this movie (Iâ(TM)m not someone who looks out for costumes in films, but the costume work was so bad that you canâ(TM)t help but notice) the problem is that, our religious man, has a crush on his employer.

Now when a Christian movie has a scene where the lead fantasies about a girl putting on lipstick and calling his name seductively you need to stop watching, because this movie will be shown to kids and many out there under the umbrella of Christian movie and it will be sad, that kids learn that it is OK to lust.

Holyman Undercover, is a drag, it is boring and not at all funny. If you manage to keep awake after the first 30 minutes then all the best, here is a movie I highly recommend you throw away the DVD if you ever come across it.

How can this be considered a Christian movie?
tina-563-7443329 February 2020
Worst examples of intolerance I've seen in a movie. I explained more in another review. But then, it goes on to make fun of people with developmental disabilities. Apparently calling people the R word is acceptable in this unChristian 'Christian' film. If racism and prejudice is your jam, this is for you.

Funny Faith Based Comedy
hausrathman9 October 2010
David A.R. White plays an Amish man who goes to Los Angeles to find his missing uncle and inadvertently becomes a television star in this genuinely funny film. Since "The Passion of the Christ," there have been quite a few faith-based films trying to tap into the Christian market. This is the first comedy in the genre that I've seen and it definitely succeeds. It is essentially a Prodigal Son story about a naive young farm boy who goes to the big city and faces all of the temptations of the world before coming to his senses and returning to the roots. The biggest difference between this film and the parable in the Bible is that this one has more laughs. Then again, it'd be hard not to get laughs with supporting performances by the likes of Fred Willard, Clint Howard, Edie McCLurg and Jennifer Lyons. I'm looking forward to a sequel!

THE "J" WORD
nogodnomasters17 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Roy (David A.R. White), an Amish man, ventures to LA to preach the word of Jesus. He meets his uncle (David A.R. White) and accidentally gets cast into the role of Satan due to his attraction for the casting director (Logan White). The movie is corny and is not a good representation of the Amish who don't wear fake beards...but do tend to marry their cousins. Fred Willard plays a network executive who hates reality TV shows. Jennifer Lyons plays a sexy actress, Tiffany Towers (not the porn star) who co-stars with Roy. They are made to go out on dates while Roy's heart belongs to Annie.

The acting was hokey. The support cast was far better than David White. The script was predictable. Not overly preachy. The hokey factor of the film seems to make fun of religion as much it does promote it.

No F-bombs, sex, or nudity. Essentially kid safe. Okay Family movie.

An Amish man goes to Hollywood.
momoften21 August 2010
What a disappointment! We had been looking forward to the release of this movie. I found this movie just plain silly and dumb. It had no clear Christian message, which is what I have found so good about David White movies. This movie also was very suggestive in an immoral sexual way. I felt it was inappropriate for younger viewers. It should have had a rating to this effect. I was very embarrassed that I did not preview this movie before watching with my children. I felt the jesting of Christianity did a disservice to all Christians. David White's talents were truly wasted here. I would not recommend this movie at all.

Wow

Warning: Spoilers
Cocaine, sexual references and... a gay prison rape joke... in a Christian movie? Yep.

This is the second or third David A. R. White film I've seen, and they just get better and better.

By the way, though, if you're a Christian, this Christian movie probably isn't for you.

If you're a normal person with a sense of humor, it's a hoot.

While this movie isn't rated, I'd say PG-13 is fair. There's no language throughout, but there are a lot of sexual motifs and the aforementioned cocaine, in addition to smoking, drinking, and guns. Not the worst things, but still unexpected for a Christian film, and probably not great for kids.

But overall, I enjoyed it. A little corny at some parts, but sometimes that what makes a movie even better.

This movie was dreadful.

I'd rather have a colonoscopy with no anaesthesia than watch any piece of garbage that slithers out of the worm infested brain of David A. R. White. I was Christian before this film, but now I loathe everything Christian. This is vile and repugnant.

Not a Christian Movie
ngbnd-5660810 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If there's one thing America has taught us, it's that just because you slap a Christian label on it, doesn't make it Christian. This movie is not Christian. Not family friendly either. I should've known that when the movie started with David A R White acting as Satan and surrounded by vampires (one of whom has something feigning blood dripping from all over his mouth) it would be a very uncomfortable watch. It was. Throughout the movie there are sexual and distasteful references, including another "Amish" character telling Roy he's ten years older than he thinks and he breastfed from his mother for...well, that's only implied. Not to mention David A R White's other character calling another man his husband. Women are objectified, and things like smoking, drinking, and doing drugs are all made into jokes. As a supposed Christian, Roy should not have been talked into portraying Satan in the way he was and certainly not after reading the lines he was reading. Did David A R White become a Christian after this movie was made? Because watching it I would never think he was a Christian at all. If you truly are a Christian, you will likely be completely offended by this vile movie. The worldly viewers on here loved it, which should tell Christians all they need to know about this "Christian" movie.

A beautiful expression of love and humor
drew-15510 October 2013
I can't believe this move came out so long ago and I never heard of it. This is one of the funniest, healthiest, cutest Christian films to ever come out. It's very realistic. This movie made me think of The Lord every eight minutes. David A R White is a force of nature. He is making history, and changing lives. I don't know why David A R White is not winning the Academy Award yet. The Lord is in every scene, in every shot, in every frame, in every grain of this film. In this film, we see the inner workings of the Hollywood machine and how it is better to love God than to want to be in movies. This movie gives me all of the ammunition I need to do my work converting and witnessing. I just put this movie on, pull out a big "J", and smoke it. Then I fall asleep, and the person who thinks I'm trying to convert them gets confused and then they haul ass.
