The upcoming Karate Kid movie is not a remake but a sequel that connects both the 1984 original and the 2010 version, thanks to the popularity of Cobra Kai. Jackie Chan's 2010 Karate Kid remake was intentionally different from the original, with new characters and a different setting in China, but both versions share similar character dynamics. The 2010 movie focuses on Kung Fu instead of Karate, which makes sense considering Jackie Chan's Chinese origins and the movie's Beijing setting. Some iconic lines and themes from the original are adapted but still maintained in the 2010 version.
The upcoming Karate Kid movie isn't a remake, and the fact that it features the star of the 2010 version is confusing a lot of people. The new film is a sequel to both the 1984 original and the 2010 remake, making both installments part of the same continuity. While this initially seems like a bizarre move, it actually makes perfect sense.

The new Karate Kid movie is retconning the franchise by bridging the gap between the original movies and the 2010 remake, which could lead to inconsistencies in the storyline. The movie's biggest strength is the team-up between Daniel Larusso and Mr. Han, played by Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan respectively. The new Karate Kid movie is repeating the mistake of the 2010 remake by featuring kung fu instead of karate, but this rebrand can be forgiven due to the inclusion of the original Karate Kid character.
It is hard not to be excited about the new Karate Kid movie, but the fact that it is repeating the 2010 remake's biggest "kung fu" mistake is a little concerning. Set somewhere after the events of Cobra Kai season 6, the new Karate Kid movie is seemingly retconning the franchise by bridging the gap between the original Karate Kid movies and the 2010 Karate Kid remake. Jackie Chan's return to the Karate Kid franchise confirms a potential crossover between the original series and the 2010 remake, setting the stage for Cobra Kai season 6. The Sekai Taikai tournament in Cobra Kai season 6 could introduce Jaden Smith's Dre Parker as the perfect antagonist against Cobra Kai's students. Dre Parker's role as a rival rather than a traditional villain would add complexity and depth to the storyline, allowing for interesting character dynamics and setting up future team-ups.
Cobra Kai season 6's antagonist may now have become clear after the confirmation of Jackie Chan's return to the Karate Kid franchise. Since the show began in 2018, Cobra Kai has been a love letter to all things Karate Kid. Even the more critically-panned installments of the franchise like The Karate Kid Part III have proven integral to the story of Cobra Kai, proving that both the worst and best of...

Jackie Chan’s The Karate Kid reboot is theorized to exist in Cobra Kai, and the theory actually works. The Karate Kid was rebooted in 2010 and retold the story of the 1984 classic. Switching some key elements of the story, such as names and locations, The Karate Kid still follows Daniel Larusso’s original story of a young boy becoming a karate champion. Jackie Chan’s reboot performed decently but is not regarded as highly as the original which has since gone on to have two sequels.
The Karate Kid’s original movie is considered a classic and has recently been expanded into a wider universe with the Netflix series Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai follows Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence as adults, 34 years after the events of The Karate Kid. Mixing some original actors and new, fresh cast members, Daniel and Johnny’s rivalry reignites at the Cobra Kai dojo. Now five seasons in,...

Cobra Kai Season 6 is delayed due to the writer’s strike, but in the meantime, Sony is looking to reboot the Karate Kid franchise in a surprising way. Last year, it was revealed that Sony set aside a date on their scheduled releases for a new Karate Kid film, set for June 2024. This came after the fifth season of Cobra Kai had already dropped on Netflix. Details have slowly been revealed — largely due to who isn’t involved with the new movie. Both Ralph Macchio and Cobra Kai creator Jon Hurwitz have stated that they haven’t been contacted to participate in the upcoming movie, nor do they even know what it is.
Recently, it was reported that Jackie Chan, who starred in the 2010 remake, was in talks to return to his role as Mr. Han in this film, which would make it a sequel to that film. Now, there...

Cobra Kai will be wrapping up with season 6, and it has set itself up to give Johnny Lawrence one last Mr. Miyagi moment. Though Daniel's old sensei and his teenage rival from The Karate Kid couldn't be any more different from one another, Johnny took on Mr. Miyagi's role as the wise teacher in Cobra Kai. This was the premise that first made the series so enjoyable in its first season. Now, after several seasons and a lot of action, Cobra Kai can bring back this unlikely connection.
After Mr. Miyagi saved Daniel Larusso from Johnny and the other bullies in The Karate Kid, the scene became iconic. This made the similar moment in Cobra Kai season 1 all the more impactful. Of course, this time, it was Johnny who had stepped into the role of karate hero, and he who took the underdog teenager under his wing to pass on his karate skills.

Despite having a successful career outside of The Karate Kid franchise, actor Ralph Macchio is destined to forever be remembered as Daniel-san. With the series having become a staple of many a childhood, the popular franchise is now etched into the cultural zeitgeist and was the product of a reboot back in 2010. Macchio has recently addressed the modern take on The Karate Kid, which starred Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, with the famously pleasant actor slyly praising the movie for continuing the famous martial arts franchise.
"It enhanced the legacy of the original."
While this is incredibly kind, and debateable, Ralph Macchio could not help but point out a particularly glaring error in the reboot's title.
"Also, there's no such thing as karate in China, so it should have been called The Kung Fu Kid."

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What’s the best modern show set in the ’80s? (To qualify, the show must have aired sometime 2000-present.)
Alan Sepinwall (@sepinwall), Uproxx
Recency bias would suggest “Halt and Catch Fire,” even though its strongest season, this last one, took place in the 1990s, or “Stranger Things,” which is an extremely fun show but not an all-timer. That leaves two clear-cut favorites: “Freaks and Geeks,” Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s ode to high school outcasts; and FX’s Cold War spy thriller “The Americans.” The former is one of the great one-season wonders, one of the best shows ever made about teenagers, and — between Feig,...

We may never see Bad Boys 3 on the big screen, but the franchise might just continue on the small screen — with a familiar face attached.
A Bad Boys TV spinoff series is currently in development, according to our sister site Deadline, that centers on Gabrielle Union’s Bad Boys II character, with Union attached to reprise her role. The Blacklist writers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier will pen the untitled pilot, which is currently being pitched to networks; original film producer Jerry Bruckheimer is onboard as an executive producer here as well.

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Jackie Chan in a serious acting role, which is why “The Foreigner” could be a game-changer. The multi-hyphenate actor, martial artist, director and singer has had success with children’s franchise hits “Kung Fu Panda” and “The Karate Kid,” and his comedy chops are well known to “Rush Hour” fans. Now, audiences get a different side of him in “The Foreigner,” a slick revenge thriller which released its official trailer today.

Jackie Chan last found success in Hollywood by mentoring young Jaden Smith in a remake of the surprisingly decent The Karate Kid. That was more than six years ago. Since then, Chan has rarely been seen in North American theaters. Most recently, historical action epic Dragon Blade and buddy comedy Skiptrace both received token releases here; each has its own problems and neither represents Chan at his finest. Railroad Tigers sees Chan reuniting with director Ding Sheng for an action picture that really moves. That's a weak but true statement; for a late-period Chan movie, Railroad Tigers features a series of action sequences that sometimes defy the laws of physics but are mostly fun to watch unfold. Chan and Sheng began their collaboration with Little...

Sometimes it takes a competition to prove your mettle, and last night on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” actress Taraji P. Henson went above and beyond the call of duty. Meyers invited Henson on to compete in the “Actathalon,” a “multi-stage theatrical obstacle course to measure and test an actor’s commitment to the craft of acting.” Some of the stages includes The Devil’s Desk, in which Henson must say a line into a phone and then clear off a desk in rage; The Slide of Tears, in which she takes a phone call, hear devastating news and slide down the wall crying; the Fellini Crusher, where she shows her range by performing a scene in the distinct dramatic style of Federico Fellini’s films. Anyone who follows Jaden Smith on Twitter knows that the teenage actor is a little off his rocker. He started off in Hollywood at a young age, starring in the Karate Kid remake, and has since followed in his parents' footsteps, becoming a hot star on the rise. But apparently, as he tells it, he used to walk amongst the dead!
No, really. While describing his Goth phase in an interview, courtsey of Project Casting, Jaden Smith claims he used to be a real-life vampire. But he has since been saved. Some might think this a bit of tongue and check banter from a very creative teenager, but at 18, sources say he was serious. While we don't actually believe he was a 'real' vampire, it is a fun story for Halloween.
Jaden Smith has become almost more well-known for his wild style and eccentric behavior than he has for his handful of movies.

Kip Moore and Jon Pardi are country singers, but they could also be actors - and pretty good ones. The pair, who will join forces for Moore's Me and My Kind tour this fall, recently met up to get better acquainted and wound up showing off a different set of performing skills in a hilarious promo clip. "If we're going to be spending this amount of quality time together, we got to know a little bit more about each other," Moore, 36, tells Pardi in the video. "I got to know your likes and your dislikes." Movies are first on the...

Every year, industry folks lobby the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with their candidates for honorary Oscar winners at the annual Governors Awards. And sometimes they get their way. Over the years Mike Kaplan, a publicists branch Academy member, has successfully lobbied for Lillian Gish, Robert Altman and John Ford’s favorite actress Maureen O’Hara, who happily collected her gold man the year before she died.

It’s not uncommon for people to work in the “family business” but when the family business involves Hollywood, it’s an entirely different story.
Certain last names have earned such respect and reverence in the entertainment industry that being born into one of these families practically ensures success should they decide to pursue a career in entertainment. Some families, like the Coppolas, span generations and involve a complex web of well-connected cousins and siblings. Others, like the Smiths, represent the new Hollywood family, with their social-media famous kids appealing to the children of their parents’ fans.
