Two Netflix shows have remarkably similar setups, but their protagonists have experienced invasive, body-snatching monsters in very different ways.
What Happens In Sweet Home?
Cha Hyun-su is the only person left in his family after a devastating tragedy. He is forced to move to a run-down apartment complex called Green Home, which is where he is living when monsters begin to attack the city.
Hyun-su's body is invaded by a parasitic monster, which leaves him with superhuman abilities – but he is also locked in a constant struggle against his violent alter-ego.
What Happens in Parasyte: The Grey?
Mysterious alien creatures have begun arriving on Earth and inhabiting human hosts, which results in the hosts dying and turning into monsters.
One such host is grocery store clerk Jeong Su-in. However, after she is injured in an attack her parasite is unable to completely take control over her body. The two begin a totally unique co-existence,...

The Sweet Home Sextuplets‘ dad, Eric Waldrop coaches the boys at baseball, but the entire family plays at home, and there are enough of them, to field a whole team. TLC fans miss seeing the six little kids, the twins, and their older brother Saylor on TV, but mom Courtney keeps everyone updated on social media. This week, the family were out in the late afternoon enjoying a game near their lovely ranch-style home.
Baseball Crazy Waldrop Family
Sweet Home Sextuplets fans were devastated when Courtney Waldrop told them the family was not returning to TLC. However, it seems understandable as they were raising the sextuplets. Additionally, Eric runs livestock on their ranch, and he owns a landscaping business. Furthermore, he coached the bigger boys, Saylor and the twins, Wales and Bridge at baseball. So, filming on top of all of that was exhausting.

Four weeks after its initial release, South Korean horror film “Exhuma” is still burning through the country’s box office. “Pamyo,” as it’s known in Korea (which directly translates to “exhumation for relocation or cremation”), has resonated in a major way with audiences who have shown up in droves to see the story of a shaman named Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and the wandering spirits she takes on with Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun), her protégé. This week: it expands in the United States.
Just one week into its release, “Exhuma” became the highest-grossing Korean film of 2024 so far, knocking the Timothée Chalamet-starring “Wonka” off the top spot following its delayed release there. Chalamet’s other big film of the moment, “Dune: Part Two,” placed second in Korea for three successive weekends in the wake of “Exhuma” too.
That means that, nearly a month in, “Exhuma” has made $67.8 million with sales of 9.3 million tickets,...

South Korea’s current box office champion multiple weeks in a row, Exhuma, offers an unexpected and entertaining take on folk horror. While dense in lore and spiritual worldbuilding, the latest horror offering from writer/director Jae-hyun Jang (Svaha: The Sixth Finger, The Priests) balances its grim, sometimes bloody folkloric terror with levity and heart. Anchored by four “ghostbusters” of sorts, with charismatic actors behind them, the intricately woven Exhuma delivers one of the year’s biggest surprises in horror so far.
Exhuma hits the ground running with an introduction to Shaman Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and her close protégé Bong-gil, arriving on a flight to Los Angeles. They have been summoned by the ultra-rich Park Ji-yong (Kim Jae-cheol) for a well-paying gig helping him rid his infant son of a supernatural curse. Hwa-rim traces the curse back to South Korea, where they enlist colleague and geomancer Sang-deok and mortician Young-geun...

For as long as survival horror has existed, confounding puzzles and bewildering navigation have been staples of the experience. Granted, they did fall out of fashion for a brief period in the late-noughties — when games like Dead Space and Resident Evil 5 pivoted in a more action-oriented direction — but generally they have been mainstays of the genre ever since the very beginning.
Although it’s up for debate where those origins actually, you know, originated, the original Alone in the Dark at least belongs in the conversation. It may have arrived a little later than kitschy Fmv outings like Night Trap and some of those side-scrolling movie tie-ins — which, let’s be honest, were just bog-standard platformers anyway — but it’s where the style as we understand it today was properly codified.
Indeed, Frédérick Raynal’s trailblazer pioneered most of the ideas that we now associate with classic survival horror,...

The film that helped birth the Resident Evil franchise, the 1989 Japanese horror Sweet Home is now watch online for free – in 4K. Hurrah!
Most readers will have heard of the Resident Evil videogame franchise or its – shall we say – uneven movie adaptations. Before those, though, there was Sweet Home, a 1989 horror film directed by cult Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
Around the time of Sweet Home’s initial release, Capcom made a tie-in videogame – a top-down RPG which contained several of the survival horror elements we associate with the genre today. The makers of that game were none other than Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara – respectively, its director and producer – the pair that would go on to create the original Resident Evil in 1996.
In fact, Resident Evil itself began life as a Sweet Home game before Capcom decided to turn it into an unrelated game instead.

Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.

There was no shortage of quality Korean shows to watch this year. From mystery thrillers and classic dramas to riveting reality series and heart-fluttering romances, 2023 was truly the year K-content ruled the roost. More recent releases like 1940s historical thriller, Gyeonseong Creature, with Park Seo-joon (The Marvels) and Han Soo-hee (My Name), and the latest season of horror drama favorite, Sweet Home, prove the momentum isn’t dying down anytime soon as we head into 2024.

Following the story of a wealthy man in 1945, Netflix’s Gyeongseong Creature is a period drama that combines history with horror and brings about an intriguing show that poses questions about humanity and the perils of survival in a monster-infested world. South Korea has been well known for making some incredible thrillers over the years, and Gyeongseong Creature does not disappoint on that front either. Although it’s a plot that is rather predictable, there are a lot of thrills to keep one occupied. The show is also set in Japan-occupied Korea, a dark time for the country, and does a decent job of representing the time period. Whether you’re looking for something historical or monstrous, this list will serve you well.
Sweet Home
The most obvious choice when it comes to a double feature with Gyeongseong Creature would be Sweet Home, the TV show about a virus that turns humans into monsters.

It wouldn’t be an overstatement to proclaim that South Korea consistently delivers some of the most riveting thriller entertainment. Long before the (K)wave of interest in soppy K-dramas and overproduced K-pop, it was thriller Korean cinema that was gripping audiences all around the world, exemplified by masterpieces like Oldboy and I Saw The Devil. This is probably why said genre keeps delivering hard-hitting shows every month. This year alone, we’ve had a dozen in this category, with Sweet Home 2 being the latest in the mix. So, when I heard of Death’s Game, I was certainly excited to see what the industry was going to cook up for us. The South Korean industry, known for its prowess in adapting webtoons and consistently delivering compelling content, had something promising in store. Oftentimes, though, the buzz surrounding a show intensifies when it hails from said industry. When we got to...

Song Kang is on a mission to prove that he can do it all in one month. Although you can say his roles in Sweet Home and My Demon both have a gray quality to them, they’re obviously drastically different in all other aspects. In My Demon, we get to see a more goofy and comical side to him that we haven’t seen before, and surely we must rejoice because of these fashion choices and the fact that he’s actually presentable (Hyun-Su could never). In the first two episodes of My Demon, it was established that even though Gu-Won is an actual demon, Do Do-Hee is as demonic in her human form. By the end of episode 1, when Gu-Won tries to save Do-Hee from a man who is desperate to kill her, a twist of fate leads to a tattoo on his wrist (which holds all his...

Trudge ahead only if you’re ready for some massive spoilers. At the end of Sweet Home season 1, things were quite uncertain for Eun-Hyuk, whose nose began to bleed before Green Home apartments’ big collapse. We assumed he either turned or died under the rubble. At the end of season 2, we learn that it was neither, but he essentially became a monster larva. As the credits are about to roll, a naked being falls out of one of the strange monster cocoons, struggles to stand, and then walks towards the camera. It’s Eun-Hyuk, and he breaks the fourth wall, smirking at us through the screen, establishing his presence in season 3 as somewhat important.

At the end of the second season of the highly anticipated Sweet Home, we get a glimpse of what’s to come in the summer of 2024. Here’s another episode of Sweet Home 2 with no mention of Hyun-Su or Ui-Myeong (disappointing). The new season of Sweet Home is shaping up to be rather flat in comparison to the first one, which was so filled with emotion and realness. Often, what South Korean media does so well also ends up being their weakness. It’s always a repetition of the same cycle after the monsterization occurs. It’s humans that are the problem, we know. Tell us something new. Some subplots are stretched too thin and don’t hold up at all, while other, more exciting ones get neglected for who knows what reason. We haven’t had a chance to really get to know any of the new characters, and more stories get added to the mix.

It’s time to remember again that no one is special in Sweet Home, and anybody can die at any time. Episode 3 has got to be one of the more difficult ones to watch, especially because of Yi-Kyung’s subplot. We’d say to put your tray away while watching this one. Episode 2 ended on a terrible note, with Su-Yeong dying at the hands of the monster Jae-Hwan. Additionally, Ji-Su has lost her hearing because she decided to be the one to save the rest of them selflessly. Ui-Myeong visited an old friend, and Yi-Kyung is finally where she has wanted to be this whole time. Dr. Lim is kidnapped by some people who look like they are in the military but may not be.
