The Tonight Show Starring Jack Paar
Jack Paar and Peggy Cass traveled to West Berlin to do a special filmed report on the situation in that city where East German authorities had started construction of the Berlin Wall only one month earlier. The program was produced with the cooperation of the U.S. military in West Berlin.
In the New York City segment of the program, Hugh Downs interviewed Earl Wrightson and Harry Golden.
On the day of this program, the Morgantown (West Virginia) Post published a scathing editorial condemning Paar and the National Broadcasting Company for allowing the West Berlin segment of this program to air. The newspaper labeled the program a "staged show" and ripped NBC executives for ignoring the network's trained and respected correspondents and permitting Paar, who the newspaper labeled as a theatrical prima donna, to conduct this special report.
