To slow saying the questions
paulgilson23 February 2021
Love the the game show but the host takes about 7 seconds a question to tell the contestants she really needs to speed up bring on Bradley Walsh

Great fun!

This is a pacy game show with six different elimination rounds, including a physical challenge. The host is the excellent comedian Zoe Lyons and she brings humour and banter to the show without ever being cruel to the contestants. It's an exciting format. A very enjoyable and fun show to watch.

Very good indeed.
Sleepin_Dragon9 February 2021
I foolishly didn't watch it when it started, as the recent BBC game shows have been pretty awful to say the least, Lingo for example, however, this one is actually really good.

This has a bit of pace, a bit of energy, and the countdown timers make for an exciting challenge. I really like Lyons as a presenter, she's funny and smart.

Definitely worth your time. 8/10.

Could be great, but is so bad it's almost funny
shanarn-6274012 February 2021
Let me start with the positives: I like Zoe Lyons and the format could work. That's the good out of the way. The issues here are that it's presented in an almost spoof, Smashy & Nicey (remember them) kind of way. The explanations are lengthy, delivery insincere and scripted links seem to be written by a linguistically challenged 7 year old ("this round is 2 minutes" errrr, maybe "takes 2 minutes" or "is 2 minutes long"). Some decent production, allowing Zoe to speak and stand freely and not turn side on cheesily to the camera would go a long way to improving a show that has undoubted potential.

The Best Gameshow Ever?
nialldavies-026522 February 2021
Such a great show. Great host, great contestants, great questions, great format - also, watching the show makes time go slower because so many rounds are fit into 30 minutes and every single second is tense! My only gripe is the unimaginative naming of the epic physical challenges, but that doesn't stop this show being awarded a 10/10 from me!

Quite possibly the worst quiz show ever
ukstevej16 March 2021
Where to start? Zoe Lyons clearly can't do unscripted stuff - her conversations with contestants are painful, and her reading of the questions is far too slow. The contestants? Err, those in series 1 were not exactly blessed with a surfeit of general knowledge, were they? And at least let them change their clothes for each episode.

An emotional journey
kykylelam23 February 2021
From the struggles of Finbar and dexterity of Grace to the hobbles of Lesley, the viewer is taken on a rollercoaster of emotions. The series leaves only one question unanswered: will Sally ever return?!

Ridiculous Idea
joehendry8 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Zoe Lyons is pleasant and clear speaking enough but what a flawed format.

I appreciate the element of luck in quizzes but what is the point in someone taking up most of the time getting lots of questions wrong , then nominating someone else in the last remaining seconds who is then eliminated even though they may be more knowledgeable?

Also, why do people who lack basic general knowledge apply for quiz shows? Go on Catchphrase or Tipping Point and give others with decent knowledge a chance.

The final round works well but other than that, plain daft.

Great Stuff
kofikat9 February 2021
Probably one of the best game shows I've seen. Has a bit of everything - general knowledge, physical challenge and spelling. Only thing I can fault it for is that the host will say 'tomorrow' but it is obviously the same day as their clothes don't change.

Superb Quiz Show - Quick-fire all the way.
stevie-3605125 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this quiz show, as do others in my family. I came to it late, watched the recordings with my Mum, and must say the amount of sheer quizzing they squeeze into 30 minutes is amazing. We were both shouting at the screen constantly, because that's the norm in our family. It's tense and the questions are coming quick-fire while the clock ticks away in the background. Zoë Lyons does a great job of keeping everything moving along nicely throughout the different rounds. Who'd a thought she'd make a great quiz show host!

During each round there's the option to select a dangerous opponent in the hope they get caught out by the ever reducing timer and therefore knocked out, although the contestants don't know how much time is left so it's all about judgement. As is the final round, the contestants are unsure how far to go, will I answer one more question or turn and try to make it back in time to win the cash? Will I be greedy or will I leave with some prize money and some kudos. It will take a special quizzer to get to the end and back and win the jackpot, and as yet that hasn't happened, not in series one anyway.

I think this must have been filmed during the pandemic as there didn't seem to be the interaction between the host and contestants or the option for hugs when the contestant wins the big prize, but hopefully that'll be different for the next series.

Zoë Lyons is such a lovely bubbly character, she's smart, sassy and the banter back and forth between her and the contestants didn't seem forced as is in some quiz shows, indeed, all the contestants seemed to warm to her, and why not!

Here's hoping there will be a next series, there's a lot of potential.

It really doesn't work on any level.

Love Zoe Lyons but I don't understand why she's on this show as her comedic talent is devoid on this show, and she makes a rather dull, constantly grinning compare. Where is her wonderful sarcasm?

Give her a proper show where she can shine. This is just another common or garden show with little to grab any interest.

Really enjoyed this show; such a shame that lightning literally had to strike after two series
Richard_McGhie28 November 2023
It is really such a shame that lightning literally had to strike upon this show after only two series (yet another of multiple examples of the BBC shooting a random idea for a quiz show at a wall to see what sticks only then to pull the plug on said concept after just one or two series) and I honestly really wish it could've gone on for at least a couple more series because I truly enjoyed this one.

I really liked the exciting format as well as the pace, the energy and the timing, plus one of the best theme tunes to a quiz show I've ever heard.

The questions that were asked throughout were straightforward and to-the-point (very much up my street) and Zoe Lyons brings such a lovely blend of humour and banter as the host that will make even Anne Robinson crack a smile.

In conclusion, Lightning is such an enjoyable and fun show that was taken off-air way too soon in my opinion.

My overall rating for Lightning: 8.5/10.
