- Having time-traveled four years in the future, the future Peter shows his younger counterpart that people have access to drugs that give them various super powers and some of them will destroy the world. Past Peter is forced to run from the dark and evil future versions of Claire, Daphne, and Knox, all of whom work as killers for government agencies to track him down. Past Peter is forced to look for allies and finds one in a very subdued version of Sylar. From his spot in Africa, Matt Parkman has a vision of his future in four years in which he is married to Speedster Daphne and is still looking after Molly Walker whom also works for the agencies. In the present, Hiro and Ando are locked away in a Level 2 prison cell where their situation starts to drive a riff between them. Tracy learns more about her origins from Dr. Zimmerman, and Nathan receives more tips from the ghost of Mr. Linderman over his position for congress. Also, Mohinder learns that the powers he gave to himself are irreversible and could lead to disaster.—Anonymous
- In the present day, Tracy Strauss visits Dr. Zimmerman and learns of her origins. She is having trouble coming to grips with what she has done but Nathan rescues her. Having injected himself, Suresh continues his transformation. Matt Parkman continues his spirit walk and sees the paintings of his future. Hiro and Ando find themselves imprisoned in Level 5 but Mrs. Petrelli tells Hiro he has the key to unlocking the mystery. Four years into the future, both Peter Petrellis find themselves hunted by Claire. It's a world where anyone who can afford it can simply inject themselves in order to have superpowers. Present day Peter visits Suresh and tries to locate Sylar. When he does find him, he's not quite what he expected. He also tries to warn his brother, who is now President of the United States.—garykmcd
- "Heroes" - "I Am Become Death" - October 6, 2008
Previously On: Nathan hallucinated Linderman; Claire was special; Daphne the speedster stole "the formula" out from under Hiro; Sylar couldn't fight his evil nature; Tracy Strauss can freeze people, she looks like Niki and went to Cali to see the doctor who delivered them both (and presumably Jessica); Future Peter took Present Day Peter on a trip; Mohinder injected himself with a funky formula that included Maya's adrenaline and turned into a wall-crawling, super-strong Spiderman type but then he woke up and was covered in gross, crystallized scales.
Titles: Chapter Four "I Am Become Death"
In Mohinder's lab he wakes up and clicks on his tape recorded notes as he appraises his wounded back. (We hear people yelling at each other in the background in another building.) He listens to himself talk about how great he feels. He clicks on the recorder to start talking about the adverse reactions when the yelling from next door gets louder. He goes to confront the husband who's yelling at his wife and opens a can of whup-ass until she begs him to stop.
In Cali, Dr. Zimmerman is explaining to Tracy how she was one of three identical triplets- Tracy-Niki-BARBARA. When their birth parents died they were separated and treated as "test subjects." Tracy wants to know what was done to her. DNA manipulation says Dr. Z, a formula that would "make you incredible." He asks if it's something like that. (He has a hokey Russian/German accent). She wants to know why, what gave them the right to do that to them? He said they had no right, they were arrogant, selfish, and human. She wants to know who. He thinks he's said too much already. He says there was "a company" but they made them forget. She asks him to take away her ability, she never asked for it. He apologizes, says he can't, that it's part of her. She gets mad and grabs his arm and gives him a quick flash-freeze. Not enough to kill him. When he quick thaws, he apologizes again.
In a quick in-show recap of footage we have already seen: Out in the African desert Parkman is quizzing his new African friend, Usutu (Isu, do Usutu?), about the blond pixie he's put in his "future" paintings with Parkman. He points out it's Parkman's future. Parkman thinks this means he can stop it from happening. Since he really wants to know new African friend gives him some funky mind-altering paste to eat and paints his cheeks with war paint. Parkman doesn't think it's working so NAF gives him his iPod and whatever tunes are on there manage to flip the switch and Parkman goes into the white-eyed future painting trance we know so well. We go into his trance and it takes us to New York City...
...or maybe it doesn't because we settle on Future Peter and Present Day Peter. It's four years into the future and FP shows PDP what has happened. They turn a corner and people are speeding by, others are flying. Even though FP doesn't have to kill Nathan anymore, the fact that someone is making a formula to give people abilities is what leads to this. The rich are buying them, others are picking them up on the black market. Except, FP points out, some of these people with abilities are eeeeevil and causing major problems. He proffers a newspaper that has a headline of a man causing an earthquake in Sydney, Australia killing hundreds. PDP says there must be good people too and why doesn't FP stop it? FP explains that he's "stepped on too many butterflies" and that people think he is a villain now. Others like Claire and Mohinder are no longer who they once were. FP tells PDP to find Sylar for help. He says they need to skedaddle now because people are hunting them. No sooner than it's out of his mouth than we see FP take several shots to the chest. PDP turns and sees brunette Claire behind the smoking gun. They're both confused, but she's not so confused she's going to stop shooting and PDP high tails it out of there with bullets nipping his heels. He takes a whack at the Haitian, approaching from the other direction, for good measure.
Still four years in the Future Peter's laying on a slab but not dead. Claire, Daphne, and Knox are looking at the body. Apparently, they have orders to kill PDP as well, in fact all Peter Petrelli's in general. Claire points out that they should use Molly (Walker, The child with the ability to locate anyone in the world from last season's "My Two Dads" subplot). Daphne. who now sports a bob, is unsure.
Back in the present day Hiro is chafing at captivity on Level 2 (sorry, guys!) banging on doors and scheming about air vents.. Ando sits and sulks. When Hiro asks for his help Ando explains that Hiro said he doesn't need him anymore and that he thought they were friends and he traveled the world with him thinking they were partners. He believes that Hiro is still cheesed at Future Ando for killing Future Hiro. Hiro admits he keeps seeing it in his head. Ando say he could never do such a thing but is now beginning to understand why he might.
In Nathan's office a lackey is asking Nathan to okay historic desks for his office. Linderman is lingering, harassing Nathan. When Nathan nixes his desk choice, Linderman wonders what's wrong with Nathan. Nathan says Linderman is what's wrong. Linderman is hurt. Nathan floats the theory that his vision of Linderman is a telepath or brain damage from the shooting. Linderman floats the idea that he's actually an angel. Nathan points out that earthbound Linderman was a murderer who wanted to destroy the world so he has a little trouble believing he's an angel now. Linderman says he wants to help Nathan become president. He says it is the path to salvation. Nathan says it's not his path, not if Linderman is leading the way.
Maya is griping that Mohinder's lab is all gross and whatnot as she stuffs things in a garbage bag. Mohinder, who is now sensitive to light, says he doesn't need her cleaning up after him. She says he doesn't look well. He says he's just tired. The way he's pushing himself she's not surprised. She tries to cajole and hug him into getting some fresh air. He gets snippy, shrugging her off saying he's doing all this work for her, to take away her abilities. She stalks off pissed. He chases after her apologizing. She accepts the apology but still leaves. He clicks on his recorder and reports that the rash is spreading and his aggression is growing. He's afraid of what he's becoming.
He puts the recorder down and we hear it replay his last thoughts as dust covers it and a cockroach walks over it to signify the passage of time. It is now...
Four Years into the Future...
...and Present Day Peter, who is still four years in the future, has come to Mohinder's lab looking for the scientist. Judging by the dust, he hasn't been there in a while. Peter uncovers old "save the cheerleader" paintings, no doubt reminiscing about the good old days of season one. He's startled by Mohinder who asks "what do you want?" shrouded in the shadows. PDP says he wants to know everything he can about Sylar, since he's supposed to help him. Mohinder is breathing all funny and sounds weird. Peter asks what happened to him as we watch him scuttle around like an insect and then place a freaky, taloned hand on Peter's shoulder. He tells Peter to not repeat his mistakes. Peter asks again what happened. Mohinder says he was selfish and arrogant and got the formula wrong. He warns Peter that Sylar's abilities are dangerous. He asks where he is. He reads Mohinder's mind- Costa Verde, CA the Bennett house- and mind blips himself where he's never been, much less been told about before. He walks in and makes two hands with balls of fire just like Meredith. He's greeted by a small boy who calls him Uncle Peter and tells him that "dad" is making waffles. The boy runs to Sylar, Sylar hoists him up and calls him champ. He goes to give Mr. Muggles some waffles. He spies Peter and immediately embraces him saying it's great to see him and if he'd known he was coming he would've made more. (He's wearing glasses and a goofy apron and looks the picture of the suburban dad).
As we come back from break on the same scene the title card tells us we are still four years in the future in Costa Verde with "Gabriel and Noah."
Noah asks where Uncle Peter where his scar is. Sylar/Gabriel says the grown-ups need to chat in another room. He and Peter decamp to HRG's old study. Sylar realizes this Peter is from the past and thinks that Sylar is the boogeyman and that it must be weird to find out like this that they're brothers. Peter's all "we're what now?" Sylar says he can't help Peter. Peter says people are after him and that Future Peter is dead and he's not leaving without Sylar's powers. He tries to start absorbing them and Sylar- who's all "it's Gabriel now"- tries to explain that his power isn't just the ability to understand how things work but a hunger that comes with it to know more. This is what made him eeeeevil, the hunger part. He says every day is a struggle to battle the monster, to protect his son, and he wouldn't put that curse on Peter. But, but, but, Peter sputter with Sylar's power he can save the world. Sylar points out that the world always needs saving. Peter says "you're all gonna die." He says if he doesn't believe him, Sylar should paint it and hands him a brush (since he's unaware the Shanti Virus wiped out Sylar's powers four years ago, right?). Sylar says not to let Noah see him in the crazy white-eyed trance.
Four Years Into the Future ...
Parkman is telling Daphne he won't let Molly be dragged into this entanglement. Apparently they're raising her together. Daphne says it'll be just this once. (Are these two together cuz, um, ew. I love Greg Grunberg but he must have 20 years on this girl! (no, it's more like 15. hi5, Grunny!)). Daphne says this is their chance to stop Peter forever. Parkman calls Peter a murderer and a terrorist. Parkman says he doesn't understand why she would risk their happy family unit for this and that as a former cop he knows from worrying about a spouse not coming home alive. She says she'll be fine. He says she's a wife and a mother and it's time for her to slow down. Once she's caught Peter, she says, she'll settle down. She has to do it. Parkman acquiesces and calls Molly. He calls Daphne "your mother." (The baby is named Daniela.) She leaves the apartment and out in the hallway, tells Knox and Claire where Peter is. Knox picks up on Claire's fear of Sylar. She says she just killed her uncle and now she has to do it again so could he please give her a second to be a human being.
In Costa Verde Sylar has painted a fractured Earth. He hands Peter his broken watch (the one that says Sylar) and says it's a symbol of what he once was. He realizes how serious things are now I guess because he tells Peter to fix it. When Peter's all I can't fix watches. Sylar says he better get busy learning so he can access Sylar's ability. He tells Peter to listen to it, like a symphony. Peter listens and moves parts with his mind and fixes the watch. He has Sylar's power now and Sylar apologizes to him for giving it to him.
Noah calls out to Sylar. Knox and Daphne are holding him in the next room. Claire trains her gun on Peter. Sylar tells him to teleport out. Peter says he can't leave since he brought this into Sylar's house. Claire says it was her house and that Peter took everything from her. Sylar apologizes to Claire and she shuts him up. Peter says to let the boy go, not until you're dead says Claire. Peter doesn't think she can kill him but she assures him she can. He wonders what happened to her. She says she learned how to take care of herself. Having absorbed Daphne's power he speeds over and punches out Claire. Daphne speeds after Peter and knocks him through a wall. As they fight in one room Sylar takes on Knox. When he realizes what Knox's power is he points out that he's not afraid of him. Knox points out that Noah is. Noah is hiding behind a stool, watching it all unfold. Knox knocks Sylar into Noah, killing him. The monster returns and Sylar starts kicking Knox's ass. Sylar freaks out and starts exhibiting the radiation powers, Peter yells after him, and Claire gets up and aims the gun but the house explodes and we pull out to see a nuclear explosion complete with mushroom cloud envelop the area.
Hiro's still trying to reach the air vent with his belt. Ando offers to try and gets it open. He tells him to enjoy his escape since Hiro's made it clear he doesn't want Ando around. Ando gives him a boost and Hiro apologizes to his friend. He says he will change the future and his friend. Just as Hiro reaches the top, Ando turns around to see the Haitian.
We see a NY paper with the headline "Reporter Missing Feared Dead" with a pic of The Greatest American Hero that Tracy froze to pieces. She picks up the phone and calls Det. Russick to give some information. She doesn't want to give her name and freezes the phone before she can say anymore. She cries.
In Mohinder's lab, he's frustrated looking through his microscope. He picks up his recorder and tells it he can't remove his ability. He pulls his hand off the table and it's covered in sticky goop. A knock on the door reveals angry neighbor man who promptly punches Mohinder. Mohinder pulls him into the lab.
Nathan is praying over a bible asking to be shown his path. Tracy enters his office and hands him her letter of resignation. She apologizes for dragging him into it. He can't change her mind. She knows what she has to do now she says, and walks out. Linderman puts his feet up on Nathan's new desk and says he must pray for guidance and that his path is helping Tracy and that he just has to trust Linderman.
On a bridge Tracy jumps. Nathan is there to catch her and fly her to safety. In her apartment they have drinks. He asks if she's okay. She answers in the negative. They sit and she is freaked out saying "so um, you can fly?" He answers in the positive. She can't believe this is happening. She shows him her power by freezing his glass. He's surprised her hands aren't even cold. They make out, 'cuz why wouldn't you.
Four years into the future...
...Nathan is holding a press conference mourning the tremendous loss of Costa Verde with the "first lady," Tracy, by his side. He urges the public to pray.
On the slab Present Day Peter is waking up next to Future Peter. The Haitian and Claire enter. He can't teleport away. She says 200,000 people died in Costa Verde and picks up a scalpel saying she wants him to feel the pain of every one of them. She cuts him and says "that's one." He says he can save them all by going back and changing the future. She remains unmoved and cuts him again. Nathan enters saying he wants a moment alone with Peter. "As my father or as my President?" she snips. "Both," he answers, shoving her out the door.
Nathan says he knows what PDP is doing. He says he's seen the paintings and had the dreams and he knows what's going on. He loosens Peter's restraints. He says Peter may be strong but one man can't save the world, everyone must participate and lets loose that Congress, in the wake of Costa Verde, has approved to a "full proliferation"- of creating an army full of people with superpowers to do the job. (Peter doesn't seem impressed that Nathan is the president). Nathan says he knows Peter thinks that people can't be trusted but since we were created in God's image that there is goodness to man. PDP and Nathan chat over FP's body. PDP points out that Nathan has been manipulated before, by Linderman. Nathan tells Peter to read his mind. Apparently, Nathan is now full of pure thoughts. Peter says that doesn't matter. Whatever he's doing to read Nathan must also include using Sylar's powers of figuring things out because he's hurting Nathan. He starts repeating "I need to understand" and begins the finger slice-head opening move. Ah, the hunger. Nathan falls to the ground in a pool of blood. The secret service pounds on the door.
Peter teleports to Present Day Level Five into Sylar's cell. He pins him to the wall and explains what he did- going to the future, taking Sylar's power-and Sylar is psyched saying "you have the hunger, you're like me." Peter says he will never let himself become Sylar. Sylar says he already is, "brother."
Present Day Parkman is in his white-eye trance and sees a future where he and Molly are watching the news report about the destruction of Costa Verde. The baby cries in the background. Molly thinks it's her fault since she told Daphne where to go. Parkman tells Molly to go take care of the baby. The news report is saying it's hard to imagine many survivors. Parkman hears a noise and opens the door on Daphne. She says "I wasn't fast enough," and collapses into his arms, her back covered in red wounds. He awakens with a start and asks new African friend if he time-traveled since he saw the future. NAF tells him that he never left, that he was asleep, dreaming. Parkman says it was real. She was there, and everybody had abilities. He looks at all the paintings that came true in his dreams including one with a girl in his arms with red wounds on her back. He says he has to find her. NAF says it's a big world. Parkman says NAF sent him on this journey so how about a little help? NAF says Parkman has to find his "totem" a spirit guide that attaches to his subconscious. It will lead him on his journey. He asks if that's some African mystical mumbo-jumbo. NAF is all Carl Jung, dumbass, "you don't read much do you?" Parkman is all, "I still have dyslexia, don't I?" and asks what the totem is. Usutu says It's usually an animal, and tells him to think about his dream and he'll find his guide. He looks down at the turtle he saw before and starts to follow its slow-moving progress.
The Haitian has brought Hiro and Ando to Mama Petrelli and she wants to know where the formula is. Ando wonders why it's so important. She tells them about the normal people to superheroes elixir it contains and how it will lead to disaster. Hiro says it was stolen. She says there were two parts and if they're both gone than they have lost. She says Hiro's dad loved him and hoped he would grow up to be a great man. Mama P says he was mistaken and his belief in Hiro will be the downfall of us all. Hiro apologizes and bows. Ando pulls him up and says he should not apologize. Ando says Hiro will not rest until he gets the formula back. Hiro agrees. Mama P says someone powerful is manipulating them and they must be stopped. Hiro says he will find and stop them. Mama P says he's the only one who can. He has the key to unlocking the mystery. We cut to Hiro and Ando pulling a coffin out of a grave. He says if he'd known he had the key he wouldn't have buried it so deep. (Ba-dum-bum!) They open the coffin and in it is Sark (David Anders, whose "Heroes" name I can't remember. Ah yes, Adam Monroe aka Takezi Kensei), who grabs Hiro by the collar and says "Hiro you son of a ..."
