Good female centric film focusing on a social issue
krishnan357-33-78257911 April 2022
I wanted to watch this movie from the time I saw the trailer. I thought I wouldn't be able to watch it in theaters but was able to get tickets for a show at Lulu Mall at Kochi.

This was a very good experience. The characters all felt believable and real. Navya Nair's performance came across as very genuine.

I also liked the way the police officers were portrayed. Not all powerful or always looking to bring criminals to justice no matter what, but good at heart.

I didn't like it as much as How Old Are You, but I did enjoy it very much. I do wonder what a sequel will focus on though.

A fitting return for one of Malayalam's finest actresses-Take a bow Navya Nair!
nidhunmoviebuff15 May 2022
Perhaps no single actress has been able to capture the essence of the everywoman Malayali village lass than Navya Nair, especially in the State-Award winning classic "Nandanam (2002)" as well other hits like "Mazhathullikkilukkam (2002)" and "Vellithira (2003)". Now, at age 36, she has ably metamorphosized into a quintessential hardworking mother character and displays all the experience she has gained working in multiple South Indian industries to deliver a resounding performance in V. K Prakash's hard-hitting "Oruthee".

Two-time National Award-winning director VK Prakash has had an inconsistent career to say the least. Having delivered groundbreaking cinema like "Punaradhivasam (2000)", "Beautiful (2011)" and "Nirnayakam (2015)", he has also forayed into ill-conceived, poorly executed comedies like "Gulumaal (2009)" and "Three Kings (2011)" as well. Thankfully, in Oruthee, he sticks to his strong suit of socially relevant drama, narrating the harrowing story of a few days in the life of a working mother desperately trying to arrange the funds for the treatment of her ill child.

The title itself, strongly conveys the politics of the movie with "Oruthee" a play on the Malayalam term for "her", smartly rewording it to also mean "A fire". And Navya Nair ably provides the fierce, fiery performance worthy of the titular character, displaying the care and compassion of a protective mother as well as all the anger, frustration and never-say-die attitude of a parent willing to go to any lengths for her children. Vinayakan is expectedly terrific as a virtuous police officer, stuck within a corrupt system that tries to suck him in at every turn.

It is downright criminal that the Malayalam industry has not been able to provide an actress of Navya Nair's capability with better roles on a regular basis. Nevertheless, in her first role in Malayalam after a gap of almost 10 years, the 2-time Kerala State Award winner for Best Actress makes a strong case for more accolades and recognition, which has already started off with Film Companion recognizing her terrific performance with the Performance of the Moth-March 2022 title. Highly recommended!

How is this bland flick so highly rated (also a film that'll make the malayali hate their favorite "kanikanum neram" song)
avmn31 March 2022
I feel like the director wanted to capture emotions like an indie film but also couldn't compromise on the commercial flick aspect, especially with the core fanbase of Navya Nair - older women. The first hour of the movie is extremely pointless. It follows the track of an indie slow burner but in such type of movies they might focus on the visual aspect, or the capturing of a character's emotion...in this nothing of that sort happens. There are character predispositions which eventually contributes NOTHING to the movie we are watching. Then there's 2 songs which follow the cliche formula. All in all, if this was well-edited to a 1h20m or even 1h30m it could have been a brilliant film.

Now let's move onto the next aspect- the story. Oh my goodness..it claims to be based on a true story. Now, "based on true story" might be used for even fiction (like Fargo), but here there's no intelligent use of this phrase. They literally mean to milk off a real-life incident but wait till you realize there's only 10-15 min part in the movie that is inspired by a true event. And even then it could have been done in less than 5 mins. But they chose to add extra masala and make it 10x exaggerated...it goes on for 10-15 excruciatingly boring sequences.

They also tried to make the ending stylish but it came off as goofy and laughable.

There are some forced references to Navya's debut film Nandanam. Not really a spoiler but when you hear her phone's ringtone in the movie you'll notice. If you are someone who loves that song, you'll hate it after watching this movie. The forced reference is so painful as we hear the ringtone play some absurdly high number of times (at least 20+ times in the movie). I hope someone tells the director that this doesn't count as an intelligent film callback or reference, rather it's just plain annoying.

Vinayan's performance was a saving grace. Actually excellent. That has to be said. Wish he could have gotten more screen time in the first half of the movie.

In the end, the current rating of 9.1 for this movie is an outright crime. It's barely a 6.5 or 7. But then we have cliche flicks like Jan E Man and Bangalore Days at 8+ and well made films like Salute down at 7..so this is expected anyway. IMDb needs to even further review their weightage systems for such films to avoid inflated and misleading ratings.

OUTSTANDING MOVIE
skmenon199318 March 2022
Oruthee ( The Fire inside you ) Directed by VK Prakash starring Navya Nair in the lead role...

Story penned by S. Suresh Babu , bankrolled by Benzy Production...

Verdict of the Movie: Blockbuster, 5/5 ⭐

Story evolves around a common woman, Radhamani whose world belongs to her husband and 2 kids. For a better living, husband works in UAE as a painter and she working as a conductor in a boat in her hometown but still leading a peaceful life..

One fine day an incident which makes the fire inside her to fight against the atrocity done towards her by some biggies and for that till what extent she could go forms the rest part of the movie.

"Silence towards injustice is biggest crime" , this quote often being taken for granted by many social devils in our society and how the victims fails to get justice we have heard a lot, but here Balamani fights for it.

The screenplay had given a perfect backbone for the story as initially the story just travels around life of Radhamani but afterwards it takes a turn which just displays the pains, struggles taken by Radhamani to get her ultimate justice.

No lags at any point of time. Songs were ok...

Here applause to Navya Nair as its not only a perfect comeback for her but she also gave a motivation to those women's who keeps silent against the injustice happens to them..

Overall a watchable family movie.

Brilliant movie, another masterpiece piece by VKP, camera work could have been better, there were multiple flaws, otherwise brilliant work by actors, director, script writer and the rest of the crew.

Navya's comeback performance is a winner! [+63%]
arungeorge1313 May 2022
The screenplay has some obvious drawbacks, but Navya Nair's riveting performance really makes you invested in the outcome of the film's events. Vinayakan also shines in the role of a righteous cop. I'm interested in seeing Chapter Two.

RATED 7/10 Language: Malayalam Media Partner: Prime - ManoramaMax

Solid drama without any lagging. Movie was bit slow in the beginning and quickly settles in the plot line. Good comeback Drama for Navya. The acting was solid and the expressions are authentic. I Liked Vinayakan role very much. He steals the show towards end. His cunning look and the role perfectly suits for him.

The only problem is the predictability of the story and simple story.

Worth the watch.

Definitely fire
radhakrishnanak22 May 2022
This is how female centric character driven story should be made. The movie definitely extract the real events that happened in real life and add a dash fiction to move the viewers. The performance done by character is praise worthy especially the female protagonist navya Nair allowed us to balance the atmosphere.

Excellent direction. Must watch.
menonabhishek-9982715 May 2022
Never have I ever seen such natural acting by a female star in a long long time. The emotional expressions per the situation were so natural , did not seem like someonez acting.

Brilliant performance by Navya I must say.

Kept us gripped throughout.

Cannot imagine ourselves put in that situation. Hatsoff to the woman who suffered and overcame this fiasco.

A must watch.

Worth not just a watch but a must watch
jeswink-2601818 May 2022
Guys, I'm writing a review on a movie for the first time. But this is really intriguing.

This might happen to any laymen out there.

May be a Malayalam traffic kind of a movie but surely this is something above that, Not sure if it fits well into that entertainment segment but this although a youth knowing that all this is plotted is really worth a watch.

Though Navya Nair has back after a long break this surely is worth it.

I dint watch it on theatre just coz I felt a Navya movie paying so much in gulf wouldn't be worth it.

But I and my buddy who watched this movie with me back home at the luxury of OTT just realized how much this movie was worth just after 30mins since this started.

If you really wanna watch something real, which might happen to any underdog out there, watch this, if it has really happened to some one it might happen to some one close to you too..... Any ones whose known the value of arranging cash for a medical or some emergency will be stuck to there seats untill the end.

It's just like they say "Penn orumbattal" which means if a women makes up her mind to do something she will get it done at any cost.

A tale that would have been apt for a short film
surajpnair14 September 2022
Oruthee was a huge let down, the hype is not at all justified. The film starts with the character Balamani and her daily chores. It started off well, setting up the main character, her surrounding, her family/friends, but it really got on my nerve to wait for the first conflict that would lead to the whole purpose of this movie.

The first conflict happens after an hour of its run time, and this has really drain my interest in the film. In the second half, expected some revival, and here the makers have taken the audience for a ride by selecting a conflict which is handled so immaturely making the characters behave like fools, and making it tough to relate. The only relief was the role enacted by Vinayakan, his character had potential depth and this was not explored to the maximum.

Performance wise, I am not sure what's the buzz around Navya Nair's strong comeback, she did just a mediocre job in enacting the character, nothing to brag about. Vinayakan's presence was the only saving grace, the makers should have told this story from his perspective and it would have been even more interesting.

If this same treatment was told in half an hour timeframe, probably it would have some impact, the makers just conveniently stretched the film to make it a feature, it looks like.

A good watch
rahul-puli7685 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
#Oruthee #Malayalam #2022 #ManoramaMax Story based on a true Incident on how a lower middle class woman fights against jewellery fraud. Navya Nair did complete justice to the role ( Radhamani) and delivered her best performance. It's quite surprising to see Vinayakan in a cop role and was good too. Excellent cinematography and direction. A Good watch.

simple ingredients to make something fantastic
ngandacinema18 December 2023
Oruthee was like taking a few simple ingredients to cook something fantastic😀 It was so brilliant how the writer transported us on a dynamic ride with the different layers of the plot. You will not be bored!

DELICIOUS

-Beyond the fraudulent jewelry store narrative, Oruthee passed a strong note on the injustice happening to the common man.

-The film had a good balance of quiet and vigorous sequences. One moment, we're looking at Vinayakan in an intense car chase, another one, it's Navya Nair doing a dance performance

-The movie will remain memorable due to the numerous pieces of advice we received on dealing with businesses.

-The actinggggg was 😍 Don't think it's necessary to mention it!

-Give it up to the sound effects that put us in a thrilling mood!

-The omnipresent cellphone, from the boat passengers to Radhamani always using it. The phone was a symbol of the support system people have to connect with each other and expose injustice.

BLAND

-Vinayakan was shown sporadically that we almost forgot about him. And having many scenes constantly featuring Navya Nair became a bit redundant

-Radhamani's chasing scene left us a bit divided. On one hand, we saw her weakness in keeping up with the thief because she was running with a child, then on the other hand, it appeared a little unreal as she let herself distracted by her shoes, shawl, and bag...

Good movie. Excellent second half
SPHariSP29 May 2022
Navya Nair makes a good comeback performance. She has done exceptionally well. Also director Vk Prakash makes a good comeback

Like others say first 30 mins of movie might appear bit slow and pointless. But once the story picks up , it is good with twists and turns and emotions.

Vinayakan scores really well. The blending of story with politics of BJP purchasing MLAs was a good thought.

Unlike other regional languages, the strength of Malayalam movie is its stories. Let more smaller good movies like this happen in Mollywood.
