- 05 "Smitten" A strange murder in the capital raises fears for Luke's safety, providing him with the opportunity to lie low and taste the life of an ordinary teenager. However, alarm bells ring when Galvin and Ruby suspect the adolescent's new love interest is an entity that can take the form of a female to stalk its prey, and she wants revenge for the death of her two sisters. Luke refuses to believe them, and tells Galvin that he shouldn't let his feelings waiver his judgement just because his wife was killed by a half-life. However, the tables turn and Luke spots Alice hiding a body in her apartment. Confronting her as well as Galvin and the rest of the team, they defeat the harpee.—Anonymous
- As the episode opens, Galvin and Mina are at the city morgue, and Galvin bribes the clerk to take a coffee break so they can "Have a few moments to grieve."
Mina has a vision over the corpse of a teenage, where she sees a flying dinosaur, a piece of paper with an what appears to be an arrow, and she sees Luke, bleeding. And a symbol. They take the symbol to a Professor Lambert to interpret and she tells them that it means revenge, and it must be repaid in blood.
Luke becomes enamored with the new girl, Alice. Galvin finds a dwarf named Luggs who has info on the local half lives. He asks if he's heard anything about Luke Van Helsing. Luggs says he doesn't know anything, but he will call Galvin after he makes inquiries.
Galvin warns Luke to stay home, until he can investigate.
Meanwhile, Alice is saved from 3 toughs by Luke. Instead of showing her eternal gratitude, she storms off.
Luggs calls Galvin and asks him to meet him at his place, only for Galvin to discover Luggs has been disintegrated.
As they leave, a large pterodactyl looking creature descends from above and breathes a HUGE fireball at them. They manage to take shelter in a tunnel just in time.
Luke tries hard to ask Alice out on a date, and is shot down. She relents and tells Luke to meet her at her flat at 5:00. As he is walking home, Galvin catches him and orders him into the car.
They go to the stacks, and Galvin orders Luke to stay there. Luke says no and heads back home. Galvin calls Ruby and asks her to go to Luke's place, to keep an eye on him. Ruby shows up at Luke's flat with a pizza, but Luke sees through the ruse and sends Ruby on her way.
Meanwhile, at the stacks, Mina and Galvin start searching through the books, looking for what Half-Life entity they just saw was.
Luke meets Alice and they go for a walk. Ruby is seen in the distance, watching them both.
Galvin finds the Half-Life, and tells Mina it is a "Harpie". Grade 10. Mina looks concerned as she gets up to look for something in the stacks.
Luke and Alice are at the beach, in the middle of winter. Both are sitting there, bundled up against the cold and Luke jokes with Alice if she wants some sunblock. Ruby is seen on a balcony overlooking the beach, spying on them, per Galvin's instructions. Luke looks up and catches Ruby, and tells Alice he is just getting up to get them some ice cream.
Luke sneaks up behind Ruby and busts her for spying on them. Luke "escorts" Ruby off the beach, by the hood on her hoodie, and into a cab, and tells her to tell Galvin to stop spying on him.
Luke and Alice begin flirting in earnest and they almost kiss.
Meanwhile, in the stacks, Mina finds the book she was looking for, which contains a full description of the "Haprie". The text describes it as a "winged, death spirit", half woman, half beast. Much like Sirens, they lure men to their deaths. The Harpies were 3 sisters. (See Harpies here.)
It turns out that one of Luke great grandfather's killed two of the Harpies, so the last one is seeking her revenge on Luke.
Meanwhile, Luke and Alice are walking by the docks. Alice starts asking Luke about his family. Luke admits his great love for and loss of his father, who died when he was one. Luke asks Alice if she lost anyone, and she simply says "It was a long time ago."
As Galvin and Mina piece together the history of the Harpies, Luke and Alice are seen making out.
Galvin calls Luke back into the stacks where he tells Luke that "his new girlfriend" is not who she seems to be. Mina hacks into the colleges database and they can find no record of Alice. No NIN (National Insurance Number, England's equivalent of a SSN), birth records or any trace of her.
Galvin explains in detail about the Harpies and how Alice needs to be captured so she can be tested. Luke challenges Galvin by saying if they want to kidnap Alice they will have to go through him first.
On his way out, Mina tells Luke that wormwood will bring about the transformation, and Luke agrees to somehow get Alice to drink some.
Mina tells Luke of about her vision, and tells him she saw him lying on the ground, bleeding. Luke tells Galvin that he is meeting Alice at 5:00, but he doesn't want to be there when they confront Alice.
Mina and Galvin fall for Luke's lie and waste half an hour waiting at a street corner for Alice.
The scene shifts to Luke's flat, where Luke is seen taping a pulse gun underneath his kitchen table. The doorbell rings and he greets Alice, and invites her in. He pours them both beers and they sit. He pours the wormwood into her beer. As Luke goes to answer the phone, Alice switches beers with Luke.
Galvin realizes they've been set up and heads to Luke's flat. He confronts Luke and they fight about his involvement in what Galvin terms a "war". Luke yells that Alice isn't part of the war, and tells Galvin to leave his flat. Luke spots Alice's scarf on the floor, picks it up and inhales deeply of Alice's perfume.
In the next scene, we see Alice, in her college dorm room, as she begins to transform into the beast half of her Harpie self. Luke knocks on her door, and we see Alice in a furtive attempt to clean up the dead body of the guy who made the mistake of knocking on her door during her transformation.
Luke shows up at Alice's flat, and knocks on the door. When Alice doesn't answer, he turns to leave. Luke walks by Alice's ground floor flat, and looks in her window, only to see her dragging the body of her victim into the bathroom.
Luke is back at the docks, where he and Alice had their first date, and Ruby shows up. Luke confides in Ruby that the team was right, and he is now convinced the Alice is the Harpie. Luke tells Ruby "I've never felt this way about a girl before", and the chagrin on Ruby's face is palpable. Luke has an epiphany that he is, in fact, Luke Van Helsing, the last of the Van Helsings, and that smiting is his life. Ruby tells Luke that he will meet that special girl of his dreams, and as usual, Luke completely misses the point.
The team meets back at the stacks, where they plan to smite Alice. Luke readies a weapon, and Galvin asks to see it. He inspects it and sprays it with some WD-40, and tells Luke that it is to reduce the friction. Galvin says "Friction is bad." This is a thinly veiled apology for their earlier fight.
The team goes to a local club, where Luke and Alice have agreed to meet. Luke guides Alice and gives her a wormwood tainted beer. Luke tells her he knows everything and Alice tells Luke why she is after him. Luke almost kills her, but is reticent, as he refuses to kill the girl; he waits for her to run into the beast, so he can kill her with a clean conscience. Galvin show up and tells Luke to kill Alice, but Luke hesitates, then steps in front of her when Galvin raises his pulse gun. A group of partying teens interrupts and Galvin quickly hides his weapon. Alice escapes with the teens.
The scene shifts to the roof of the club, where Alice is now in beast mode and is flying to attack Luke. After several attempts, Luke manages to destroy the Harpie and with it, his first crush.
