Nicely done; pretty sure other reviews are the same person

This episode was decently written and executed, especially since it detailed the past six/seven months in a twenty-three minute window. They tackled the situation with COVID very accurately, and the virus affecting the show rightfully should be a major plot line considering it's retail where many people are. Superstore continues to be one of the best sitcoms out there. Hats off to the writers and NBC!

Beginning of the end
safenoe20 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've titled my review Beginning of the end because at the time, many of us thought the pandemic was the beginning of the end, but also this episode represents the beginning of the final season of Superstore. There's a bittersweetness with Amy and Jonah about to head off to California, and I look forward to seeing California - Part 2 to find out what happens to the pair.

Anyway, Essential is a pop culture snapshot of how the world and retail stores responded to the pandemic, and the references to hoarding toilet paper and all were right on the money and then some with some change to spare. Essential is one to watch.

Retail
People that are slating this episode need to wake up cause this was spot on. This is what happened at the start of Covid - I work in retail and this was what happened. Made the episode more funny cause it was spot on

COVID-19

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is about the onset of COVID-19. They try to figure out the social distancing. 6 feet from nips and tips they decide. Murder hornets, toilet paper hoarding, Glenn burning out are shown. Amy is told the offices are ready for her in Cali. She hugs Jonah and smiles beautifully but looks scared.

It was alright.

Just giving it 10 because I like the show. This episode seemed like the Olympic one where it doesn't really belong but they threw it in to be relevant. Still somewhat funny and a bit relatable.

Fine Coronavirus Episode
AnimatedCritic30 April 2021
Even if this episode is set during COVID-19, it just feels like an average episode of Superstore, and at times boring. I think the premise of Cloud 9 suffering through a pandemic is interesting, unfortunately, it didn't reach it's potential, and also missed a great opportunity to poke fun at the pandemic. Overall it was a fine episode, with good jokes, but never reached the potential it had.

No humour. Where did this show go?

Isn't TV supposed to be escapism? I did not enjoy having to deal with BLM, Covid, mask, social distancing, talk of looting/rioting etc. If I wanted to watch that, I would turn on the news.

Disappointed that they focused so much on COVID-19 and were not funny about it.

Yes, working the pandemic into the story line makes sense in the retail setting of the show. However, the virus plot/jokes were not funny, they were just depressing. This episode reminded me of how terrible the last 8 months have been. I was looking forward to a new hilarious episode of Superstore and this was a major letdown.

Trash

Didn't laugh at all. This episode was so dumb. Not funny at all just a recap of February-August. You'd think after months of nothing news, and depressing situations around the world it would be easy to lift your spirits. Flop.

The only episode that I've hated.
vaanie27 February 2021
This episode was all about covid and the episode wasn't funny at all.

I watch this show when I'm in the mood for something light and funny. This episode not only bored me, it irritated me. It felt like listening to a real-life staff meeting on COVID. YAWN!

I used to like this show

This episode started out with covid and they wouldn't let it go. After about 2 minutes I couldn't take it anymore. I gave 2 stars because I feel sorry for them.

Tolerable besides
kgarrett192 March 2022
Amy and Jonah are awful together. Awful apart. I sure hope they breakup. Everything about the show is enjoyable besides how terrible their chemistry is. They aren't funny or cute. They are cringy and not romantic.

Ummmm where are their masks?
Icestarfish-13 March 2021
Ok so I know this is dumb but it was super distracting that the extras weren't wearing masks. I really like how 9-1-1 is handling their episodes since Covid has come out. This show hasn't been funny in a few seasons but they didn't even try this episode.
