Interesting exploration of serial killing..
fastfoodi18 July 2008
I'll try and say a bit about the film without giving too much away..

OUR TOWN is an interesting and well-told story exploring the motivations of serial killers, and the circumstances/experiences which leave a person vulnerable to the particular urges a killer may feel. It's intelligent and thought-provoking. The main character (the aspiring writer) has an unmistakable charisma and gave a great performance. Secondary players were also more than up to the task.

I liked how the so-called serial killer triad of behaviors i.e. bed-wetting, animal-torture and fire-starting, was implied rather than spelled out, and the main character seemed initially to be channeling Dostoyevsky's Raskolnikov (unfortunately, this promising development breaks down later as his childhood experiences are revealed).

The movie is , however, far from perfect.. and it is most unfortunate that its flaws, in my view, could have been easily remedied. Firstly, and most importantly, the flashbacks were immediately confusing. It was unclear which younger actor represented which elder kid in which flashback. This was a significant hindrance as the flashbacks are numerous and play an important role in fleshing out the three primary characters (also the jumps in time could have been dealt with more smoothly somehow, they tended to be a bit jarring and disorienting). Secondly, the subtitles at the screening i attended were inadequate. Many instances of Korean text appearing on screen were left untranslated, despite being obviously essential to the plot. It was fairly easy to infer more or less what information was being conveyed, but it disturbed the overall experience of the film significantly. On a lesser note, there is a glaringly distracting shot where a young girl who is supposed to be dead can CLEARLY be seen to be breathing. I would not normally complain about something as minor as this, but this actually leads to a brief spell of confusion since she appeared so obviously alive. Hence the simple "goof" graduates to incompetence.

Had these two major flaws not existed, OUR TOWN might have garnered an 8. As it stands, it gets a 7 on the strength of its story (Perhaps the DVD release will have better subtitles, so that problem may not be an issue for home viewers). It's a strong effort and unlike many Korean films of this nature, it thankfully didn't derail into hokeyness at the end of the final act (ala A BITTERSWEET LIFE, CHASER, NO MERCY FOR THE RUDE etc. etc. ad infinitum!).

Good concepts and production, sometimes wobbly storytelling, but ambitious serial killer story
refresh_daemon8 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Our Town (no relation to the play) is a suspense thriller revolving around the well tread ground of the serial killer. While the film contains several spoiler worthy revelations that really help it to find it's own place in this well worn sub-genre of crime thrillers, this film has a particular merit in being less of a mystery and more of a character study of a killer.

The setup is typical--a series of murders occur bearing the mark of a serial killer. As a detective investigates, his down-on-his-luck crime novelist friend is drawn into the case as well, suffering from a case of writer's block in his serial killer novel. As the investigation continues and the bodies pile up, not all appears to be as it seems for our protagonists as well as the serial killer.

One nice thing about this film is that there isn't a whole lot of surprise. The film is fine with giving away what would be secrets in other films and just uses the information to ratchet up suspense. The question quickly changes from "who done it?" to "what will happen next?". Also, the film actually takes a bit of time to delve into the stories and backstories of the three principle characters. Unfortunately, while this part is interesting at first, I think it ends up tying up everything too neatly at the end. Furthermore, if viewed cynically, you might even conclude that the film in contrived, although the way that it's written, it appears to actually be fairly well thought out.

Part of the problem with this film lies in the structure. Like many films of its nature, it does try to get you with a series of twists and turns, but it does so relying on flashbacks, which cheapens the whole matter--it would be more interesting were there a mystery element and we were trying to figure out the connections between the characters as well. Also, sometimes the characters do seem to behave unreasonably for their predicaments, which makes you feel as though the writer is trying to shoehorn the characters into the plot. Towards the ending, the editing gets a little chaotic with running through time and seems to lose its ability to focus evenly on the characters, leaving you feeling like at least the crime novelist, who we think of as our principle protagonist, isn't that important after all.

But the pic looks good, sounds good, and is well performed, so that helps. Our Town, in the end, is a better than average serial killer pic with a decent amount of suspense and interesting explorations into a killer's psyche. Unfortunately, the intelligent story is plagued by wobbly story-telling and the occasional contrivance. Still, I enjoyed it enough for what it was and can say that those that like these kind of crime thrillers might find something to like in Our Town as well. Just don't expect to be hanging on the edge of your seat. 7/10.

A serial killer movie that really beat my expectation, good amount of psychological aspect and twists
KineticSeoul22 February 2011
This movie really beat my expectations cause this movie just didn't get that popular in Korea. And I never heard about this movie from anyone, so I assumed it wasn't a very good movie. I don't know if it's because I had low expectations for this movie, but I found it intriguing and entertaining from beginning to end. This film has good mental and psychological parts to it and is done pretty darn well. In fact as the movie progressed it kept on getting intriguing. The plot of this film basically revolves around psychos, one a bit different from the other. The movie is also a bit of a game of cat and mouse, even if one of the killers know more about the other killer than the other killer of the other killer. This is a serial killer movie that will keep you thinking throughout the whole thing and the twist and turns are executed very well. I also liked how it explores the drives and desires of some mental people. Like some reviewers claim, this movies main flaw is how convoluted it is, in a very unnecessary manner at times. Especially when it comes to the flashbacks, but I really liked how it all came together at the end and about the pioneer of certain murders. This is a good suspense thriller with good amount of mystery and twist in it, this movie was surprisingly a treat to watch.
