Not to be confused with another horror film of the same name currently in production, This Dark Below is not a H.P. Lovecraft inspired film, but rather a great looking thriller in the vein of Buried.
In the film directed by Douglas Schulze, a kidnapper traps Rachel, a young woman in a wetsuit, and holds her prisoner under the ice of a frozen lake. Sounds chilling doesn't it? Get it?
Official Write-up:
The Dark Below is Douglas Schulze's (Dark Fields) new stunt, while waiting to shoot the sequel of his clever Mimesis, he crafts for us a Machiavellian and claustrophobic thriller in line with Buried. Shot in a natural setting in the heart of winter around (and mostly in) Michigan's Great Lake, with an economy of speech who leaves us with a constant tension, the film can re [Continued ...]...

While Douglas Schulze is working on a sequel to Mimesis, we’ve heard that he has an additional project in the works that will begin production later this month. Titled “The Dark Below,” this movie is billed as an “experimental thriller” with a storyline that is being kept a secret.
What we do know is that the movie takes place on Lake Michigan and a majority of it will occur underwater. Production starts at the end of February, although filming will span the entire year in phases due to weather requirements. The film is being shot on the Red Epic and will utilize special underwater camera rigging for photography.
The cast is still being assembled, but the first person to officially join is Lauren Shafer (Mimesis). Douglas Schulze will direct from a script he co-wrote with Jonathan D’Ambrosio. Ambrosio will produce along with former Sony pictures VP Kathryn McDermott (Spider-Man,...

The 1930s to the end of the 20th century saw the release of some classic tap dancing movies. Here's Aliya's pick of the 10 best...
Either you love movies in which people suddenly break into tap dance routines to express their innermost desires, or you hate them. If you hate them, you’re in luck – they pretty much don’t exist in modern film any more.
Having said that, there have been some great dancing moments in the last few years, such as Amy Adams having a me party in The Muppets, or Meryl Streep bouncing up and down on the bed in Mamma Mia! But these aren’t tap dances, and they’re much more about enthusiasm than skill. Or High School Musical, Take The Lead and others give us great modern or ballroom dancing, but within the context of people putting on a show,...

With the impending release of MGM’s 1952 classic musical romp Singin’ In The Rain on Special Edition Blu-ray HeyUGuys were invited to witness the most recent translation of the movie masterpiece onto the West End Stage.
I had heard that Singin’ In The Rain The Musical is excellent; originally arriving in London in the early 1980s and enjoying various revamps and relative popularity between then and 2012. However I must point out now that I am a die-hard fan of 1940s and 50s Hollywood musical comedies. I was 9 years old when Leonardo DiCaprio became the poster boy for tweenage sexual awakening in Romeo + Juliet and Titanic but thanks to Rock Hudson, Carey Grant and Howard Keel, I just didn’t get it. Consequently I arrived at the Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue feeling optimistic for the evening’s performance but fairly certain of one thing: there is only one Gene Kelly.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Meskada" (2010)
Directed by Josh Sternfeld
Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment
When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.

On June 17, Image Entertainment will release the 2007 serial killer movie Fall Down Dead on DVD.
Dominique Swain is stalked by a serial killer in Fall Down Dead.

I’m not sure why distributor eOne Home Video decided to release director Douglas Schulze’s 2009 chiller “The Rain” as “Dark Fields”, a title that horror filmmakers Allan Randall and Mark McNabb used for their effort back in 2006. Then again, I’m just a faceless, mildly annoying film blogger — what the hell do I know about marketing? Regardless of its name, this surprisingly intriguing indie endeavor certainly looks much better than its cast would suggest. Before you get yourself worked into a frenzy, I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with David Carradine, Richard Lynch, and Dee Wallace, but one generally doesn’t associate them with award-winning cinema these days. That’s all I’m saying. Before I dig myself deeper, here’s the synopsis: When the drought-stricken farming community of Perseverance resorts to child sacrifice to bring healing rains to their land, a terrible curse is unleashed,...

Dark Fields (aka "The Rain") could very well end up being a piece of crap film, but I'm really digging its old-time horror vibe. That is, full of sacrifice, curses and cult-ish farming communities. Sort of like a Wicker Man meets Children of the Corn or something.
Synopsis:
When the drought-stricken farming community of Perseverance resorts to child sacrifice to bring healing rains to their land, a terrible curse is unleashed, that haunts their bloodlines for generations. More than a century later, one of their descendents is struck by a horrible affliction and must commit an unspeakable act of murder to remove the curse once and for all.
The film stars David Carradine, Dee Dee Wallace and Richard Lynch and will be released on DVD from eOne Entertainment on March 22, 2011.
Trailer after the break.
Embedded video stripped, see full HTML version.

For those of you in the La area, the 13th annual Hollywood Film Festival kicks off Oct. 23 and continues through the weekend with some promising horror programs at 9pm each evening.
First up on Friday is the Interplanetary (accompanied by short Attackazoids), a B-movie romp across the surface of Mars from Birmingham film-maker Chance Shirley, who shot on old-school 16mm “like it was still 1983”. Originally pitched as “Alien meets Office Space”, this is Shirley’s follow-up to 2004’s zombie comedy, Hide and Creep. Saturday’s line up is all about the walking dead and includes Spanish chaos-in-a-mall short, Zombies and Cigarettes, followed by zombie/serial-killer hybrid Die-ner.
Tightly constructed around strong performances, Die-ner ponders the existential dilemma of a sociopath stuck in – obviously – a diner, facing an onslaught from his recently deceased victims. If you prefer bloodsuckers on a Saturday night, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead is a dark comedy...
