Dean's Deal Comes Due
tortugaeva16 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I think that this is one of those episodes that is just amazing. The cast and crew of Supernatural never cease to shock and amaze me, but this episode will hold a special place in my heart.

The main thing to make it so fantastic, was the performance put in by Jensen Ackles. He blew me away. In the past, fans have documented how much he can convey with so little, and here, there was no exception. You could really see his fear, open yet guarded, in his eyes. It hurts to watch and see that pain, but it so astonishing and beautiful that its impossible to look away. And you honestly don't want to. Jensen makes you want to lap up that pain, and smother him in hugs. Try and make him feel better again. But nobody can, and that's evident in everything that Dean does in this episode.

The storyline held itself perfectly, with the boys and 'Uncle' Bobby heading out to find Lillith - but not after Dean gets himself into a fight with Ruby, and comes out with her knife, despite her beating his ass. They track Lillith to be a little girl terrorizing a family, and sneak in. Just before Sam goes in for the kill, they find that the little girl is clean... Lillith is elsewhere. Lillith takes over Ruby's body, and the games begin. When they figure this out, it is far too late, and the hell hounds come a'running. Dean doesn't make it, and his body is mangled as Sam watches on, unable to stop it, only hiding his face. Closing in on Dean's body, as Sam holds him, lifeless, and tears fall from his eyes, we see vision of Dean in hell, screaming for Sam. Tortured.

Both of the boys took my breath away in this. Its just wow. I can't say enough. All the speeches, and even the physical stuff was so fitting and well done, this episode earns my applause. :)

If we go down, then we go down swingin'.
zombiehigh1810 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
What makes Supernatural stand out from other TV shows, is the fact that they have the courage to carry on with the worst possibilities, not scared to shock us and leave us hanging with every season finale, instead of just coming up with a magical last minute solution.

All through the third season of the show, we have been hoping for a last minute way to save Dean from his gloomy fate, But there is no happy ending on Supernatural, not for the Winchesters any way.

Through the amazing performance of Jensen Ackles, We see right through Dean with less than thirty hour left till his deal comes due. Dean begins to see hallucinations about Hell hounds, He is sure getting more and more scared but not scared enough to put Sam in danger. He doesn't want to hand his brother to the very daemon that wants to kill him unless they have a way to fight it. He is more willing to die than to let Sam fall for Ruby's trap and convince him to use his psychic powers. And with hallucinations getting stronger by the minute guarded fear invades his eyes but he has to keep it together for Sam's sake. He tells Sam that though they are family and they are strong together, they are each others weakness and "The bad guys know it to" (Quoting the Trickster) and with John's deal and then Dean's, now they have to stop being martyrs and that Sam should not bow down and use his daemonic powers out of despair, he chooses to "Go down swinging" and fight like his daddy taught him. Instead of having a "chick flick" moment he calms Sam down by singing "Bon Jovi" together in an unforgettable scene in the Impala while trying hard to hide his own panic. (Sam please don't sing again). He apologizes to Sam for putting him through this and asks Sam to remember what he and John had taught him. As we hear the twelve o'clock tick, this man breaks our hearts with his smile. And Dean dies along with Sam's last piece of innocence.

Wow, just Wow. Kripke you really own my heart. Jared was terrific portraying Sam, desperate to save his brother, but above all my heart goes to him as he is forced to watch his brother die. Great job Jared. Jim Beaver you are a master piece, Bobby you are the best. (I liked his "Do I look like a detachable prom date to you? " and "Family don't end with blood, boy."). It is sad to see Katie Cassidy go, I know Ruby was lying and manipulative, but don't worry Ruby will be back but sadly not Katie Cassidy.

Lilith seems to be the coming most wanted Daemon on the boys list and we will sure see her again. (But why did she always choose to be a cute little girl? this is just creepy)

Now,With hanging questions we are left wondering, so If you are watching this I suggest you have your season 4 DVD ready because you simply won't help it.

  • What will happen next? - How will Sam get Dean back? - How will he survive when the whole world is acting against him? - Will he turn evil? - Will he use his powers? - Why was Lilith powerless with him? - And still we don't know what is end game?

  • Enjoy the ride fellas.

Time is Running Out for Dean Winchester
hotcountry_chick19 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
One of the things about Supernatural that I love the most is the fact that it is not afraid to take chances with the characters we love. Being a late reviewer of this episode, I have already seen the most current ones, and have witnessed such losses; and as much as I regret losing a beloved character, I appreciate the efforts of the writers to make the show as realistic as a show with the world "supernatural" for a title can be.

The episode begins with Dean hallucinating about Hellhounds; he has 30 hours before his deal is due, and he is scared out of his mind: but there is no way he will show it. As we Supernatural fans all know, Dean is more concerned about his brother than himself (which was what caused this mess in the first place) and would rather die, suffering torment in Hell, than bring death or torture to Sammy. Jensen Ackles is brilliant in this episode; you can see the tortured fear in his eyes, but he tries so hard to put on a brave face for Sam. All three leads were fantastic in "Wicked," from Jim Beaver's touching "Family don't end with blood, boy", to Sam's tears as he holds Dean's lifeless body, and that brave smile Dean sends his brother, that final goodbye as the clock strikes midnight. Watching that smile was heartbreaking.

Yes, the writers actually followed through with Dean's death, and it was the most moving scene I have ever witnessed on prime time. Listening to Sam screaming at Lilith to stop, and then sobbing as he repeats his brother's name... it makes me cry just recalling the scene. Jared Padalecki is amazing in this scene, one of his better performances. Jensen's tortured screams as he was attacked by the Hellhounds send shivers down my spine: you could really hear his pain and fear.

"No Rest For the Wicked" is probably the best season finale to date. Combining humour with the typical Supernatural creep fest and, of course, the sorrow of the situation, the viewer is shuddering one moment, chuckling the next, and, of course, sobbing. We share the pain Sam and Dean are experiencing, and that, in my opinion, is the sign of a job well done.

Excellent, 10 stars.

The Time Has Come
claudio_carvalho7 September 2009
Dean has dreadful nightmares with hound dogs from hell chasing him but he does not tell Sam since he has only thirty hours to the end of his one year life deal with the devil. Bobby locates Lilith in New Harmony, Indiana, and Sam summons Ruby to help them. Ruby tries to teach Sam to use a hidden power, but Dean lures Ruby and steals her knife, keeping her trapped under a pentagram. The Winchester brothers and Bobby head to New Harmony and Dean discovers that he has the ability to see demons that have possessed common people. They arrive in a quiet neighborhood where Lilith has possessed a young girl and is terrorizing her family, and they find that her house is protected by a great number of demons. When Ruby appears out of the blue, they break in the house to destroy Lilith, but they have a big surprise.

The last episode of the Third Season is engaging and ends in the climax, as I expected, with Dean being tortured in hell. I regret the end of Ruby, performed by the sexy Katie Cassidy and my favorite character of this Third Season. But the greatest and creepiest moment of the show is the evil and wicked Lilith in the body of a sweet little girl scaring her parents and grandfather. My vote is eight.

"And I want you to shut your pi-hole, but we don't always get what we want"
Red_Identity9 September 2010
No Rest for the Wicked is the best season finale of the first three seasons.

Now that Dean only has a few hours to go, he is more desperate than ever. Sam wants to get the help of Ruby, but when Ruby comes, all hell breaks loose. The episode has some amazing one-liners from both Dean and Ruby. It is also the last episode that Katie Cassidy comes out in, and in that respect she will be missed. I was a bit surprised to see the writers actually go through with their plans for Dean, but I am glad they did. This is only going to lead to a strong fourth season and the introduction of a new storyline.

One of my favorite Supernatural episodes

Warning: Spoilers
The build up to this finale is perfect. I grew up watching this show with my parents, but now I restarted the series to see the entire storyline and the anticipation that starts at the end of season 2 to this episode is perfect for a real fan to watch. This episodes basically sets up the next few seasons with angels from when dean gets killed by the hellhounds and dragged into hell, and then when the angel Castiel pulls him out.

Brings a great season to a great close
CubsandCulture8 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
While telling an interesting story in its own right-poor grandpa!-this episode provides a fitting end to the first 3 seasons of the series. One of the reasons why the constant deaths and resurrections largely work is there is always another cost associated with them. That the boys don't weasel out of the deal makes the series remain authentic. Oh and the interaction with Bobby is one of the most touching moments of the show.

If I was going to knock it for anything I must mention that the plotting around Ruby's body is forced. There is a pretty obvious lantern hung on a plothole to try to make this better but it really doesn't. But that is fairly minor.

Season 3 review:

This is the finest season of the series. The central narrative is effortlessly weaved in and out of the standalone episodes. The comedic episodes are utterly funny. The shortened schedule meant there was no filler. And by focusing on Dean this season stands out. This is the start of the golden age of the series.

Season Score: 10 Average Episode Score: 8.75

Top 3 Episodes:

1. Ghostfacers!

2. Mystery Spot 3. Bad Day at Bad Rock

Bottom 3 Episodes

16. Long Distance Call 15. Malleus Maleficarum 14. Sin City.

Hell
janedoe53003 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really wish I could have seen this episode without knowing how it would eventually end, the tension in the last 10 minutes must have been unbearable! I don't think anyone thought Dean would actually go to hell, but he does, and oh, the horror. I can't actually believe how they got away with depicting hell like this on a family channel, but it must be because it's not overly gory. The psychological element is more horrifying than pretty much anything I've ever seen though. Hell, of course, isn't real, it's a hypothetical place full of terrors the human mind can't even begin to fathom, so depicting it in fiction must be something of a challenge. How do convey the pain, the despair, the sheer terror? I wouldn't know where to begin, but I sure felt like if Hell was real, this would be what it was, not a fiery hole, not a chamber full of instruments of torture, but like this; an endless void, inhabited by strings, hooks, blood, thunder, pain and horror, and most importantly, the knowledge that it will go on, forever.

What a great an intense episode! Probably it was for the best that this Season was a short one...I don't think we would have got this hell of a ending with a full season...

It's about time
shwetafabm9 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So from what i read it seems there was some strike that cut short the episodes and the writers didn't really have a plan, that panned out and connected way too well in the latter seasons but speaking of this one they made one hell of a cliffhanger. That kid was creepy too. The action ok, the conflict with Ruby was fine.

Season 3 review 9/10 Season 3 was a bit different from the other two mainly due to the storyline being focused on the excellent plotline of Dean going to hell and his spiral and more random Demons and much more focus on demons and while that was a good thing in the sense it gave some good lore and great character development in Dean, the demons being so owerpowered their defeat is something you just have to swallow as a "main character obviously wins" and while i loved the lore of witches and humans become demons, the demons themselves just not scary and the stakes decrease and decrease in standalone episodes because of it. Some of the weekly monsters were just ok, some of the demons just boring. Supernatural is not really scary but what it does get right in this department are the ghosts, they are pretty great at times and we didn't get many of those this time around. Bella was a good addition, Bobby becomes more prominent in the show and Ruby's character was a great source of mystery. Lilith was creepy as a child but we don't see much of her to be too fearful i suppose plus that last bit where her powers don't work on Sam... But i'm not sure it could be intentional...will see later seasons and revisit. My faves were mystery spot, ghostfacer i didn't like sin city or the second last ep much. Plotlines 1. Dean going to hell Excellent and emotional 2. Sam having to deal with that 3. Ruby Good or bad 4. How to get Lillith 5. What's up with Bella

0 payoff. What a disappointing season.
aarongnr13 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This finale had 0 payoff. We don't know any more about Lilith. Dean died, so everything they tried in this season was for nothing. Sam can suddenly resist Lilith without further explanation. This was such a nonsensical finale its insane. Yeah it was gripping. Right until those last few minutes when you realize that it was all for nothing.

Death of one of the Winchester boys :(
Dianang_9019 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Dean and Sam confront Lilith and her demon forces in a last ditch effort to protect Sam and save Dean's soul. Ruby appears and the three are chased into a room by a hellhound who has come for Dean. Dean quickly recognizes that she is being possessed by Lilith, but she incapacitates them. She then opens the door for the hellhound, which proceeds to tear Dean apart in front of the horrified Sam. Sam manages to regain control and recover the knife, but Lilith leaves Ruby's host's body before he can stab her. Sam then cradles Dean's bloody and lifeless body as he begins to cry. In the last scene of the season, Dean is shown in Hell, suspended in a hellish void by seemingly endless chains and hooks through his flesh, crying out in agony for Sam's help.
