Comedy with a serious underbelly = One of the series' gems.
Carpediem689127 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I've tried to avoid any spoilers, by not saying anything outright. So I've clicked the "spoilers" box just in case, but you will probably come to the conclusion that I skirted and avoided actually spoiling anything. : )

I love this episode! A Supernatural episode to date has never made me laugh so hard and so much/often throughout before! Jensen is a actor with tremendous range (and I'm not just thinking in terms his vocal skills, LOL). Not only can he bring the tears, but he can dish the comedy both physically and semantically. In other words, in this episode he showed his talent for not just delivering his lines but also for the physical humor. Jared deserves a lot of admiration for being able to stay in character and not ruin every take by laughing - because god knows it must've been hard not to!

This episode was not all light-hearted humor and jokes. There was a lot of serious information to be gleaned as well. Many serious topics covered. The bad'y they faced was very different in the sense that there was a great deal of sympathy to be had for him. And the manner in which the episode's problem was resolved felt a bit weak. It felt rushed. Sure, it literally was rushed as you'll see when you watch it, but it kind of felt hypocritical doing what Bobby and Sammy did.

Finally, maybe the second time you watch it, there is a lot to be learned about Dean in this episode. His vulnerability allows the audience to learn a lot about him that we normally don't since he is the type to bury it all beneath a touch macho exterior as much as possible.

Episodes 4.5 and 4.6 are exactly what the audience needs, as it is clear from the first four episodes of season four that we are about to get dished a lot of heavy drama soon. There is a lot to be resolved and revealed, and not all of it will be easy! I CAN'T WAIT!

P.S. The surprise during the end credits is priceless. It's hilarious.

Best episode ever!
cornman_9321 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is quite possibly the best episode to have ever been created in the Supernatural show history. I laughed, I cried, and maybe even peed a little.

To see Dean, this fierce monster hunting man scream like a little girl, when a cat jumps out of that locker, was PRICELESS! Did I mention that I laughed so hard that I actually cried!? Great episode!! It was a nice break from all the heavy hearted episodes.

I also enjoyed the part at the end where it shows Dean jamming out to "Eye of the Tiger". This really gave us a look into who Jensen Ackles is as a person in real life. I think it definitely added to the show as a whole.

Isn't he adorable!
zombiehigh1823 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Though it might seem a bit misplaced since it is the second comic episode in a row. But this one is by far the best comic relief of the whole season. Jensen Ackles has great comic timing and manages to make you laugh out loud no matter how many times you watch this one. His out of character Dean performance is both funny and heartbreaking at the same time as he manages to face his two worst fears one of which Sam turning evil, which lingers with him even after Sam manages to kill the monster.

It is also interesting to see a reverse on roles, as Sam steps in as the adult, acting as his older brother's protector, reassuring him and saving him yet again for the third time in a row while keeping it together nicely. (Though I think Sam was too calm managing to save Dean to the extent he feels more cold than caring). I think this episode serves as a reverse to season two's "Bad Day at Black Rock" as one of the brothers is cursed and the other has to save him with Bobby's help.

Bobby makes another welcomed appearance after being missed for a few episodes.

You will certainly enjoy this episode. It is a lot deeper than you might think and you will be left wondering why did the ghost sickness only affected Dean and not Sam? What did Lilith mean when she told Dean "You know why"? Because Dean is certainly not a dick!

Reminds Me Why I Watch The Show
AnnaShade8 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This show isn't afraid (no pun intended) to be funny and scary. The main reason I watch the show is the dynamic between the brothers, and this episode certainly brings that out. Dean is infected with a ghost sickness that will make more and more scared until his heart gives out. Sam and Bobby try to stop that, all the while Dean is progressively getting more frightened.

If you watch kind of closely, you notice that the scarier things get for him, the closer he sticks to Sam. It's interesting to see a reversal of roles, since normally Dean is the one protecting Sam. I think in the fourth season they're both doing a lot of protecting. Only, Sam hasn't actually had his life threatened in season four (minus the Wishing Well thing), and Dean has been on the receiving end of near-fatal attacks at least four or five times. Interesting.

Anyway, this episode is a ton of fun, especially with the usually macho, guns blazin' Dean Winchester scared to death of teenagers, turning left into oncoming traffic, and cats. You'll have a good time with this one.

Dean Winchester: Hunter, Ladies Man...Wimp?
hotcountry_chick23 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Jensen Ackles can make you cry with a simple facial expression. The quivering of the lower lip, the gazes away as he tries to hide his emotions from his brother. With monologues such as that from "AHBL II", Ackles can easily break your heart. But he can also make you laugh with his slapstick humour and over exaggerated expressions. Take "Mystery Spot" as an example, in which that man "died" in the most comical ways imaginable. Of course, we have the writers to thank for one liners such as "I full on Swayzee'd that mother", and "I'm Batman", to name a few, but without the delivery, such lines would sound completely ridiculous. Part of the appeal in Supernatural is its comedy, both physical and verbal, and Jensen Ackles most certainly delivers.

In "Yellow Fever", Ackles seems to take physical comedy to the next level. When, during a "routine autopsy" the boys come in contact with the corpse's bodily fluids, Dean becomes infected with ghost sickness. The symptoms of the disease begin with mild paranoia, followed by extreme, practically irrational fear, and finally, death by heart failure. At first, Dean's symptoms are subtle: he is afraid to drive the speed limit, and is anxious about getting caught using their fake FBI IDs. Before long, Dean becomes absolutely terrified of everything in sight, including an adorable little terrier, complete with pink bow. Ackles has been given the chance to go all out, and most certainly does so in this episode. In one particular scene, Dean is terrified when Sam opens a locker and reveals a cat. Ackles said in an interview that he was told to scream as long and over the top as he possibly could. The result? A hilarious portrayal of a generally macho hunter turned fraidy cat.

As funny as the episode is, however, Ackles also brings out his serious side. Time is running out for Dean, who now has minutes before his 48 hour bout with ghost sickness claims his life. Returning to Hell is a reality, and in one amazing scene, Dean is face to face with Lilith. The demon, once again portrayed as a seemingly adorable, innocent little girl, taunts the terrified Dean, who tries to control his fear. Ackles' facial expressions are key in scenes such as the following. With only his eyes, he expresses so much, in this case, the terror of facing another stay in the pit. At one point in his final hours, Dean cradles a Bible in his arms, trying to get a hold of himself. Ackles' performance in both scenes is fantastic. This man is very underrated and, personally, deserves more recognition.

I highly recommend "Yellow Fever". Great writing, clever story, and an all around fun hour of TV. The only reason why this episode does not get higher than an 8 is because of the other amazing ones I have seen.

A good solid comedy!
mm-3927 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Supernatural never takes itself too seriously. I love this comic episode which provides a break from the usual scarum dark side shows. Dean is the victim for the brunt of the script writers comic plot devices. The episode is about Dean getting the scary virus and is very unDean for the rest of the show. The Eye of the tiger part? What is with that? I love the chain ending. Sam saves Dean's bacon again. My wife loved this episode, especially with the Dog and Dean part. I give this show a 8 out of 10. I though maybe the Trickster was back at it again. There is a second ending to this show so do shut the show off too soon!

This is one of the better ghost episodes
CubsandCulture3 March 2020
The show has ton a ghost stories. I would *guess* about a 1/3 of the episodes are centered around or feature ghosts. Given that mechanics of the show solves ghosts by finding and burning their remains and how they are caused by violent deaths these sort of episodes get all old fairly fast. Even when they work they all feel pretty much the same. There are few exceptions-"Road Kill" comes to mind-where the ghosts are deposed of or treated in a different manner. There are also a few episodes that are not focused on the ghost-"It's a Terrible Life" comes to mind-but they are used as a plot device. Few if any make it to this level of standing apart from the mass of others.

The ghost here and the ghost sickness is one of the most unique plots on the show. Add in that how the haunting is solved and on the basic plot level this is a different animal all together than say "Mannequin 3: The Reckoning."

I think a lot of the strength is also how well the episodes blends the elements of the series. Scaredy-cat Dean is hysterical. How Luther was killed is horrifying. The great tease around Sam's eyes and the ambiguity the "pain in my ass" hallucination is some great mythical arch that feels natural in the episode.

This is a very good episode.

"That was SCAREY!"
lirmihn8 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Love this episode!

......................SPOILERS..........................................................................................

Dean goes neurotic from ghost-juice; kitty cats & yorkies send him screaming.

Bobby speaks fluent Japanese!

Sam manages to be sympathetic, just because he's Sam, but also perhaps he remembers too well being cursed by a rabbit's foot & losing his shoe...

Gumby again makes a guest appearance (Lisa was "Gumby Girl"), but presages a brutal death for the ghost.

Childe-Lilith also reappears to Dean, revealing the not-hilarious memories of Hell he's dealing with & denying.

Jensen's/Dean's most excellent air rendition of Eye of The Tiger removes most of the bad taste left from the method of killing the ghost & plays in the end credits, don't jump too fast into The Great Pumpkin!

Misplaced
ttapola17 May 2011
THEN: #4.1 - A Fantastic season opener and Mytharc super-booster. #4.2 - Good, but uneven follow-up with maybe one too many ingredients. #4.3 - Long overdue detailing of the show's Mythology done with style. #4.4 - Monster-of-the-Week, but a great one. #4.5 - *Another* Monster-of-the-Week, albeit also a Comedy/Weird One, that can't stand repeated viewings.

NOW: Surely the series would get back to the Mytharc after a two-episode digression? Well... this *is* a really funny episode, with none of the pacing problems that plagued the previous one. However, at the time of writing, 721 votes have given this episode an average of 9.0 and 508 voters have even gone as far as given this the full 10/10! Now, the science of statistics says to us that those 508 people are letting the fanboy/girl inside them cloud their judgment. And there are arguments to support support that.

While extremely funny, thanks to Jensen Ackles's considerable comic talents, it does not mean that this is a flawless, ie. a 10/10 episode. There are several problems. The biggest one is that *three* Monster-of-the-Week episodes in a row is too much when there is a *literally* apocalyptic Mytharc running in the background. "But what about the bit where...?" someone may be asking. It. Is. Not. Enough. Again, we can see from the opening credits that neither Misha Collins nor Genevieve Cortese make an appearance, and can draw our conclusions considering this episode's weight in the big picture from there. Also, this is the second overtly comedic episode in a row - something that should *never* be done unless the main category of the show is Comedy. Also, a Comedy Episode should remain a Comedy Episode from start to finish - otherwise it is just *incoherent*.

Viewed as a single episode, this episode works well enough to be a good 7/10 (there really isn't anything truly special here), but when considered as a part of Season 4 - and the episode itself reminds the viewers that it *is* a part of Season 4, just not as meaningful as it should be - the rating goes to 6/10, which is ironic, since this is the 6th episode of the season. The next one, fortunately, is a return to both form and the Mytharc.

The Ghost Sickness
claudio_carvalho26 May 2010
Sam and Dean arrive in Rock Ridge, Colorado, pretending to be FBI agents to investigate the death of the marathon runner Frank O'Brien apparently by heart attack despite his good shape. After the autopsy and a couple of interviews, they discover that Frank was lately anxious and jumpy and has died scared to death. Sooner Bob advises Sam that the three victims in Rock Ridge have died of ghost sickness and Sam realizes that Dean has the symptoms of the disease with intense fear and paranoia. Bobby arrives in the town to help Sam to find the ghost of Luther garland that has spread the outbreak but the time to save Dean is running out.

"Yellow Fever" is a funny episode of Supernatural, with Jensen Ackles inspired performing a hilarious role. The conclusion with Bobby and Sam vanquishing the ghost is disappointing and this episode deserved a better ending. Nevertheless in the credits, Dean dubs the Survivor' song "Eye of the Tiger" from "Rocky III" and this attraction is a kind of compensation for the weak conclusion. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Febre Amarela" ("Yellow Fever")

should be called "Eye Of The Tiger"
jackiehedstrom17 October 2022
Even though the ghost story is nothing special really, this is one of the best episodes. It allows for Jensen Ackles to show off some of his comedic skills, which are top notch. I am rewatching the whole series, so now I look closer at the details. The whole speech Dean has about how it is nuts to be pursuing monsters on purpose is really cool to watch when you think about how much of that scene really has to come from the actor, from the delivery of the lines. Imagine that on paper, and consider what gift it takes to nuance that, to merge the comedy with the drama that way.

And then there is the absolutely perfect "Eye Of The Tiger" with Jensen and the Impala at the end. The best ad-lib ever! The fact that they kept filming, put that in the episode, gave it a little cool title credit in beat with the song - that is why this show lasted for so lang; creative talent and intelligence in front and behind the camera.

Episode gets a 10. And I don't even like ghosts...

To hell and back with the Winchesters
henriette-hedegaard29 May 2023
Love this show. The characters and the storylines.

All your worst nightmares comes alive, and tries to kill you, but in the end Dean, Sam, Bobby and Castiel always saves the day along with a bunch of their friends.

Demons, clowns, vampires, werewolfs, ghosts and all others creeps you can think of.

God and heaven - the devil and hell.

The fight between good and bad never stops.

This episode isn't the best. More funny than scary actually, but it shows a side of Dean, we don't see much. And the end of the episode is absolut awesome:)

Remember to look under your bed before you go to slerp at night :D.

Really funny episode.
iamcanadiantoo11 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode revolves around 'ghost sickness'. Now I've seen most of the seasons of Supernatural and this was my favourite by a mile as the funniest episode. I actually laughed out loud. Jensen Ackles acting scared was brilliant and adorable. Jared Padelecki was a wonderful straight man. I have no idea how he kept such a straight face while Ackles was acting. Best part was at the end when Ackles was lip syncing to Eye of the Tiger by Survivor with the Padelecki laughing in the background. The comedic timing was perfect. There was some tragedy. The little girl who played imaginary Lillith was wonderful while taunting Dean.

Crappy episode but the end was funny
maarten_wieringa719 July 2010
It was not my thing this episode. It was not scary enough, and the storyline was boring. But the performance of Jensen in the end was great and funny and makes this episode worth a watch. Further it was a waste of my time. No Lillith for me anymore. She is not scary at all. She is just a cute little blond girl. You can't take it serious when she appears as a bad person. If you want to laugh this is your favorite episode. When you're in for a good scare you can avoid this episode. Monster Movie was funny and scary so i think that was a better episode. Dean and Sam are tracking a ghost who is living on people's mind. Later in this episode Dean is a victim.
