August is a precarious month for the film industry; nestled between the blockbuster summer schedule and the advantageous awards season of fall, it’s a quiet time for big budget fare. Though not quite the dumping ground of, say, February, it’s mostly a breather month – a calm before the prestige storm, and where studios can test […]

For fans of 80s action cinema, No Retreat No Surrender holds a special place. We've been speaking to the man behind the series...
If you were a kid in the 1980s and you liked action movies, chances are you rented No Retreat No Surrender at some point. It was like a more violent, high-octane take on The Karate Kid, with all-American teen Jason (Kurt McKinney) getting martial arts tutelage from no less than The Ghost Of Bruce Lee so he could kick the ass of a muscly Russian (Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major role). As a kid, this movie was everything to me. It was a 15 cert so a little bit edgy, but still simple and wholesome enough for young me to totally ‘get it’. I had tears streaming down my face the first time I watched it, I was so invested in the final fight.

Summer’s in full swing with big family gatherings and social events. It’s the perfect time for some raunchy laughs at the multiplex. Eleven years ago (no, really!) R-rated movie comedies made a big, big comeback when Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson were Wedding Crashers. Four years later, the lead up to nuptials ignited a comic trilogy with The Hangover. Then the ladies got in on the act just two years later with Bridesmaids. This weekend’s new flick doles out a bit from all those entrees in the funny flick buffet, expanding on a comedy staple (or main course in the food analogy), namely the comic team. This doesn’t quite harken back to Stan and Ollie or Bud and Lou, rather the inspiration may be a bit over twenty years ago to Harry and Lloyd, those Dumb & Dumber dudes, continuing through Harold and Kumar, on to various unions of Rogen,...

Last week saw the wide release of one of the year’s best documentaries, Weiner. Through very funny (and tragic at times) everything in this political profile is real (much to the title subject’s embarrassment). So, let’s turn the tables this week with a fictional comedy, shot and edited as though it’s a documentary. Yes, it’s another example of the hybrid made so popular by triple threat Christopher Guest (it’s almost as though he invented it), the “mock-umentary”. All the way back in 1984, Guest (with director Rob Reiner) torpedoed the serious film format with the look at a fictitious heavy metal band in This Is Spinal Tap (later he, as actor/writer/director, would take on 60’s folk music with A Mighty Wind). Happily a current group of satirists have decided that those music styles are not the only ones ripe for ridicule (rap got...

Widely viewed as one British rock’s ‘golden trinity’ along with Rolling Stones and The Beatles, The Who have had a massive influence on many of our modern day rock bands. They have an output most can only dream of, ranging from being a singles band early on, to producing the great sprawling concept albums such as ‘Quadrophenia’ and ‘Tommy’.
The four original band members are some of the most talented musicians on Earth. Roger Daltrey has an incredibly powerful voice, Pete Townshend is one the greatest songwriters of all time, all the while bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon are often viewed as the very best at their respective instruments. The songs vary from moving, quiet ballads to thumping , snarling and majestic rock anthems.
The albums of The Who cover a great range and this list will attempt to put some sort of definitive ranking for each of them.

This year moviegoers finally felt the full force of a star that went supernova two years ago…a major comedy star named Melissa McCarthy. She had accumulated small roles in film and TV, but the surprise Summer smash of 2011, Bridesmaids, made everyone take notice, even Oscar (she was a Best Supporting Actress nominee), when she stole almost every scene. Since then Ms. McCarthy’s kept busy doing a CBS sitcom named “Mike and Molly” (and has nabbed an Emmy) and last Winter she had an all too brief cameo in This Is 40 (you have to stick around for the end credits which included several unused takes that are a wonder of improvisation). But now we’re finally getting her in showcase movie lead roles (besides a very funny cameo in the otherwise dreary recent The Hangover III). This past February she co-starred with Jason Bateman in the surprise box...

With summer just around the corner, the music industry is poised to start dropping tons of new tracks in hopes of bringing the heat -- but what to listen to on the days you don't feel like sweating it out on the dancefloor? To craft the perfect soundtrack for beating the heat, ETonline has turned to Haley Strode, star of Nickelodeon's newest hit series, Wendell & Vinnie.
"This is a compilation of what I consider to be necessary summertime tunes," Strode tells ETonline, "meant to be listened to in this order."
Tobias Froberg, Somewhere in the City
"There must be a party ... somewhere in the city." These rad lyrics help inspire a carefree summer.
The La's, There She Goes
This songs is nostalgia at its core, summer in middle school, knee socks and all.
James Brown, It's a Man's Man's Man's World
This song reminds me of a summer I lived in NYC; James Brown is a bad...
