- Rock, country, hip-hop, punk, and pop-designers must wield looks that symbolize one of the five genres, and their models for this challenge are themselves. The budget is a hundred and fifty dollars and the deadline is one a.m. deadline to create an iconic look for the runway. Quickly, the designers who have a real perspective on their specific musical genre distinguish themselves from the clichés of their competition.
- Only five contestants remain. Now it's getting serious.
"Now that I'm close, I can smell it," Korto says. Suede notes that he has been in the bottom three the past three challenges. Suede thinks Suede needs to step up his game. We would tend to agree with Suede on this one.
"Hallo!" Heidi squeaks. "For your next challenge, we're going to let you re-pick your models." Jerell, the winner last week, stays with Nicole. Leanne, meanwhile, steals Tia from Suede. "Childish!" Suede tells the camera.
The contestants return to the work room to find Tim waiting. The next challenge: "You will be designing for each other." Suede is first up. He will be designing for Jerell. "Suede's OK with this, although Suede is more experienced sewing womens wear," Suede says. "But bring it on because I'm going to win and Suede is getting Tia back!" Just ... wow.
Now for the remainder of the pairings: Kenley will design for Leanne; Korto, much to her chagrin, will design for Suede; Jerell will design for Kenley; Leanne will design for Korto.
But wait! There's more (as there always is)! "You must each create a look for your client inspired by a specific musical genre," Tim notes.
Tim then reads the genres: Jerrell will design a pop look for Kenley; Korto will design a punk look for Suede; Leanne will design a country look for Korto; Kenley will design a hip-hop look for Leanne; and Suede will design a rock n' roll look for Jerell.
Consultation time. Leanne seems to be terribly amused by the idea of Kenley designing a hip-hop anything. Jerell, meanwhile, suggests turning Kenley into "Kenley Spears." Suede, who got dinged for being out-of-date last week, wants to avoid a KISS look.
Shopping time. "I am making Kenley into a little pop diva," Jerell says. "Everything is going to be stretchy and netty and sparkly." Tim doesn't see hip-hop in Kenley's print, but the designer promises that he will when her outfit is done. One suspects Kenley's bizarre confidence will one day be her undoing.
Designing time. Kenley's hip-hop look for Leanne will feature a leather jacket and high-waisted jeans. "We all see this floral blouse that Kenley has," Korto tells the camera. "We all know that ain't hip hop. It's damn near country."
Jerell's pop look for Kenley, meanwhile, starts with a "fishnet mini dress with diamond cuffs." Says Kenley: "Being sexed up by Jerell is a little scary." Suedes rock n' roll look for Jerell will have satin pants, a tank top and a patchwork vest. Leanne's boots for Korto make the latter feel a "little country."
With four hours to go, Tim enters. He thinks Jerell's design could use more, but only if its "the right more." Leanne's country outfit might be "too subtle." Korto's punk look for Suede -- with denim, skinny jeans -- appears "very basic." Suede's rock creation isnt "ramped up enough."
Now for Kenley, who doesn't take criticism particularly well -- especially from the likes of Tim. "Correct me," he says. "I'm an old fart. Isn't part of the whole hip-hop fashion oversized? Kenley immediately starts to whine. "You need to listen," Tim says. "It would help if you removed the sarcasm and the facetiousness." Ouch.
"So Kenley is a hip-hop designer," Korto says with a smirk. "I can't wait for tomorrow."
The next morning, Kenley reiterates her pledge of not listening to anything Tim says. Jerell wonders if Leanne will be able to tame the "junk" in Korto's "trunk." He also falsely encourages Kenley, who seems to crave his approval. "I'll let Kenley destroy herself," he says.
The designers next undergo hair and makeup to match their outfits. The results take the words right out of Tim's mouth. "This will be the most unique show 'Project Runway' has ever seen," he says.
Heidi emerges onto the runway. She welcomes guest judge LL Cool J and then introduces the models/ designers. Shockingly, all the designers love their own creations, although some worry that the models aren't doing their jobs. "Leanne is not selling my look at all," Kenley says. "She really looks like a big, fat poseur."
LL thinks Korto's punk outfit looks "right on the money." Nina Garcia also says it's "right on." Michael Kors says Suede "looks really great in it." Michael thinks Suede's vest for Jerell is very cool, but isn't so hot on the pants. LL says that "subtly doesn't work for the stage." Nina thinks it's missing "drama."
Jerell's pop look for Kenley goes over well with Nina. Michael thinks the outfit is "sexy but not vulgar." LL appreciates the skin and comments that Kenley is well "supported." Kenley's turn. "What happened to the pants?" Heidi asks. "These are probably the most unflattering pants I've ever seen in my life." Uh oh. "I just don't know that she looks like she's part of the culture," LL says delicately. Kenley pouts. Nina gives her a hard stare.
Nina would have liked to see more glamour and sophistication in Leanne's country design for Korto. LL questions whether the ensemble really says county at all. Michel is similarly lukewarm.
The judges confer and then bring the contestants back out. The winner: Korto. "I'm so happy because I just didn't do punk, I did men's wear," she says. Jerell gets a "good work." Leanne is also in. Suede and Kenley remain.
"Suede, you played it safe and rock n' roll is anything but safe," Heidi says. "Kenley, there was no glamour, no bravado and you missed the attitude of hip hop completely."
Kenley is in.
Auf wiedersehen, Suede.
"Suede is leaving," Suede says. "Somebody had to go and unfortunately, it's Suede."
