Directed by Academy Nicholl Fellow R.J. Daniel Hanna and co-written by Hanna and producer Christian Sander, Hard Miles highlights the vast landscape of the American West and the depth of the human spirit. Handsomely shot on location across the Sierra Nevada, the Navajo Nation, Utah, Colorado, and Grand Canyon National Park, Hard Miles tells the uplifting true story of Coloradan Greg Townsend and Rite of Passage’s Ridge View Academy bicycling team. In the film, social worker Greg Townsend (Matthew Modine) assembles a motley crew of troubled teens for a (nearly) 1,000-mile transformative bike ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. While Renny Harlin was promoting his film, The Bricklayer, JoBlo asked him about the making of Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and he had high praise for star Bruce Willis, who he compared, favourably, to the new generation of action stars, who seem reluctant to ever allow themselves to get beaten up on-screen, Willis never had this issue, said Harlin: “I really wanted Bruce Willis to get really screwed up. His face is a bloody mess by the end of the movie, and like you said, it really does make the character more heroic. They are really taking punishment and keep going.”
However, as we reported a little while back, there was one line Willis didn’t love in Die Hard 2: Just the fax, ma’am…
It’s a line that made audiences laugh, but, in his book “The Last Action Heroes,” writer Nick de Semlyan interviews Harlin, and...

One month ago, heading into the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the most anticipated title for buyers was not necessarily the action-adventure anthology with Pedro Pascal (Freaky Tales) or the Kristen Stewart-fronted post-apocalyptic love story (Love Me). It was Dídi, a coming-of-age film about a 13-year-old in the Bay Area from a first-time feature director with no notable U.S. stars. It quickly landed a deal with Focus Features, while films with shinier stars and higher concepts are still in negotiations for deals.
The U.S. has long been known as the great arbiter of “bigger is better.” But being risk-averse, given current economic conditions and industry trends back home (Disney, Paramount Global, Amazon MGM, and others are currently undergoing layoffs), may, says one U.S. buyer, “no longer mean getting a massive star or big director — it means costing less.” Yet, internationally, the mandate seems to be business as usual,...

Welcome to this week’s review of Tna Wrestling, the latest episode under the return of the Tna branding! Let’s get into the review and see what went down…
Match #1: Nic Nemeth def. Trey Miguel The following is courtesy of tnawrestling.com:
After defeating Zachary Wentz last week, Nic Nemeth must now lock horns with another Rascal in Trey Miguel! Nemeth clotheslines Miguel over the top rope to the floor. Wentz provides a momentary distraction, allowing Miguel to take him out with a dive. Back in the ring, Miguel rakes the eyes, then drives Nemeth shoulder-first into the steel ring post. Nemeth creates separation with a mid-air dropkick to counter Miguel’s springboard. Nemeth delivers repeated elbow drops but Miguel kicks out. Wentz trips up Nemeth in the corner and the referee ejects him from ringside. Miguel soars with the Meteora off the distraction but it’s not enough.

Ministry have unleashed the latest song from their upcoming album, Hopiumforthemasses. The new track, titled “B.D.E.” (aka “Big Dick Energy”), takes aim at toxic misogyny and violence against women.
“The incel subsect and general misogynistic tendencies in our society are dangerous yet seem to fly under the radar so we figured it’s time to shine a light on it,” stated Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen of the track. “In true Ministry fashion, we battle it with sarcasm.”
Hopiumforthemasses, which arrives on March 1st, recently made our list of the 30 Most Anticipated Metal & Hard Rock Albums of 2024. The LP’s previous single, “Just Stop Oil,” came in at No. 7 on our list of the 30 Best Metal & Hard Rock Songs of 2023.

In 1981, Stevie Nicks kickstarted her solo career by collaborating with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” The song peaked at No. 3 in the United States and set her up for the strongest solo career of any of her Fleetwood Mac bandmates. It was also a success for Petty and the Heartbreakers, but he didn’t initially see it this way. It sounded completely different from his initial vision of it.

Jenna Dewan is opening up about the tragic loss of her friend Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who died by suicide in December 2022 at the age of 40.
While attending the National Alliance of Mental Illness Westside Los Angeles (Nami Wla) annual gala on Friday, where she and Derek Hough presented the Heart of a Champion award in Boss’s honour to his wife Allison Holker Boss and their teenage daughter Weslie, Dewan chatted with People about how she’s moving forward from Stephen’s death and why it was important for her to be a part of the event surrounding mental health.
“This is incredible, to have the moment to share in his love, light, and legacy. And being here to support Allison and their family I’ve known for so many years. They are truly the absolute best, biggest-hearted [people]. They take care of everybody else,” the actress and dancer told People on the red carpet.

For a man who has, for the last 30 years or so, found his life defined largely by the fact that his body moves in unwanted and uncontrollable ways, I get the feeling that the last thing Michael J. Fox is actually wants is to be still.
Davis Guggenheim’s documentary biography is formed around a series of interviews with Fox, footage of his day to day life, and narration taken (as is much of the film’s structure) from his first autobiography, Lucky Man. Still strikes me as being about a man who has always wanted to control the way he and his life move. He played sports as a kid, he talks about how he relied on the mobility of his face and his body in order to do his work as an actor; his ability to control those subtle movements a key part of what he he did.

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

If you don’t have the patience to binge-watch an entire series of television during quarantine but still want a daily dose of entertainment, the Tribeca Film Festival will roll out one short film a day that you can stream online for free.
The daily series is charmingly titled “A Short Film a Day, Keeps Anxiety Away,” and the postponed festival will debut a new short film each day from a different filmmaker, including several making their online premieres and others that come from the festival’s alumni.
The first premiere of the series will be “Lady Hater” from writer and director Alexandra Barreto on Mar. 30. The film is a comedy short about a woman who finds herself stressed out after she picks the very wrong yoga class.

HBO has decided it will now submit “Watchmen” as a limited series for awards consideration, the pay-tv channel said Friday. However, no decision has been made yet regarding renewal status.
“We discussed with the producers and felt limited series was the most accurate representation of the show and any possible future installments,” HBO said in a statement provided to TheWrap.
The critically acclaimed Damon Lindelof-created series was classified as a drama when it was submitted for consideration for the 2020 Golden Globes, where it was notably shut out, receiving no nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Spare a thought for Huntress and Black Canary, for the Clown Princess of Crime has officially taken top billing on Birds of Prey.
Shortly after its release (and subsequent failure at the domestic box office), Warner Bros. made the decision to rebrand its Suicide Squad spinoff as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, all in the hope of boosting Seo (search engine optimization) so that budding comic book movie fans are able to find the movie as quickly as possible. Seemingly, Birds of Prey doesn’t garner as much engagement online without overtly adding a dose of Dr. Quinzel.
It’s a situation that evokes memories of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s far-future thriller Edge of Tomorrow, which was later titled Live Die Repeat in time for its home video release – a fate that will likely befall Harley as well. So you can effectively say goodbye to the whole ‘Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

TV writers often draw inspiration from movies.
Sometimes they write characters quoting a film's most iconic lines.
Sometimes they borrow the whole plot.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - DC's Legends of Tomorrow
Anachronisms can tear the timeline apart and create an homage to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
On DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 4, the Legends travel back to the 80s.
Why?
A young Ray Palmer and his adopted alien need rescuing from government agents.
Amadeus - 30 Rock
Amadeus tells the story of composer Salieri's resentment towards the more talented Mozart.
On 30 Rock Season 2 Episode 13 Jordan discovers he has a Mozart-like talent for creating pornographic videogames.
This leaves Frank as jealous as Salieri.
The homage to Amadeus is further cemented with a montage set to Mozart's Requiem: Lacrimosa.
The Seven Samurai/The Magnificant Seven - The Mandolorian
It's no secret Akira Kurosawa's films and westerns were major influences on Star Wars.

Before we get into this, let’s make one thing very clear. There’s no doubt in our minds that Die Hard is one of the best Christmas movies ever. It also remains as one of the best action films around, too, but it is very much a Christmas flick, despite what people will try to tell you.
But given the time of the year, the classic debate has now sprung up again, with fans on Twitter voicing their thoughts on whether Die Hard should be considered a holiday watch or not. And as you can see below, there’s a fair amount of people making the case for both sides.
Here are just some of the Tweets currently spurring this never-ending debate:

Netflix, which streams both of these shows picked up the most nominations in the first wave of categories, with eight. Interestingly, the streamer nabbed four out of the five children’s program spots, with the other, lone non-Netflix program in the category being “Sesame Street.”

Jim Corrigan showed up on The Flash chapter of Crisis on Infinite Earths, which means the Spectre is coming to the Arrowverse.
This article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
In an Arrowverse crossover full of surprises and shocks, Crisis on Infinite Earths' biggest curveball before the winter break might have been what they did to Oliver Queen.
Crisis promised big changes for the Green Arrow right from the outset. He had already cut a deal with the Monitor during the Elseworlds crossover last year, to save Supergirl and the Flash. The presumption was, knowing that the Crisis was coming, that he would be sacrificing himself for Barry, who famously died in the pages of the original comics version of the story. And then they went and killed Ollie in the first hour of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Above: some runners-up among my favorite posters of the decade. From left: Black Swan by La Boca (2010); Obit (2016) by Kristin Bye; Nebraska (2013) by Blt Communications; Wreck-It Ralph (2012) designer unknown; Escapes (2017) by Brandon Schaefer.Ten years ago, not long after I had started writing about movie posters for Mubi (back when it was called The Auteurs), I was called upon to come up with my favorite movie posters of the decade. It was a daunting task since I hadn’t been keeping track quite as carefully as I have these past ten years, but it was also somewhat of a novelty since there weren’t a lot of people talking about movie posters either in print or online back then. Looking back at that list of ten years ago, there are a couple of posters I might not choose today and I’d definitely bump Neil Kellerhouse’s poster for The Girlfriend Experience...

Madrid — The 3rd Conecta Fiction, Europe’s biggest Latin American TV co-production forum, wrapped last week in Pamplona after four days of dealing, debate and gastronomic delectation. Following 10 Takeaways from an intense and buoyant event, driven by the unfaltering growth of high-end production in Spain and most of Latin America:
1.Platform Pivot
The writing was on the wall, or more precisely the big screen of an auditorium at Pamplona’s luxurious Baluarte congress center, from the get-go of Conecta Fiction. Drama and mini-series production near tripled in Germany over 2014-18, according to Spain’s Gabinete de Estudios de la Comunicación Audiovisual (Geca). It near doubled in France last year, up to 27 titles, from 13 in 2017. Yet traditional TV viewing is still falling among young audiences, down 28.4% and 20.1% among 14-12s and 13-24s in Spain, for example, said Geca’s Luis de Zubiaurre Wagner, citing Kantor Media. The real money shot...

A debut album is normally thought of as a statement of purpose, but boy band Why Don’t We’s 8 Letters feels aimless, like a series of genre exercises hastily thrown together.
This musical aimlessness has a commercial purpose; in fact, it’s a necessary strategy for any boy band or girl group hoping to enjoy Top 40 success today. That’s because the process of breaking an act like this one is more random than ever. “Before it was a push business,” ace songwriter Savan Kotecha explained in April. “Labels...

Sales veteran to debut in new role at Venice Film Festival.
Agathe Valentin has been appointed head of sales at Pyramide International, the sales arm of Paris-based auteur film production and distribution house Pyramide Films.
Valentin arrives from Les Films du Losange where she spent eight years rising to the position of head of sales and handling prestige auteur titles such as Michael Haneke’s Oscar-winning Amour and Stranger By The Lake.
“After eight years at Films du Losange, I felt ready for a new adventure and a fresh challenge,” Valentin told ScreenDaily.
She will make her first outing in her new role at the Venice Film Festival (Sept 2-12) with two festival titles: Early Winter and Montanha.
Australian Michael Rowe’s Early Winter, starring Paul Doucet as a security guard fighting to keep his marriage afloat opposite Suzanne Clement as his wife, will premiere internationally in Venice Days.

The 40th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival now has something of a slate. Festival toppers Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling presided over a press conference Tuesday morning where more than 34 films were announced including the world premieres of "The Martian," "The Family Fang" and "Demolition." It's an intriguing initial lineup for the venerable Canadian institution and something of a steadying the ship after losing some major debuts to Venice, Telluride and the New York Film Festival over the past few years. Well, maybe. The most impressive world premieres include the aforementioned "Demolition" with Jake Gyllenhaal (officially the best opening night film in recent memory), "The Family Fang" with Nicole Kidman, "Legend" with Tom Hardy, "Trumbo" with Bryan Cranston, "The Martian" with Matt Damon and Lance Armstrong doc "The Program" with Ben Foster and Michael Moore's latest documentary, "Where to Invade Next." Notable films that will have premiered...

Before diving into an analysis of this year's Oscar nominations, I want to say at the top that revealing all 24 categories live is the way to go. That was just wonderful, to hear all of those below the line artists' names called in the wee hours of the morning alongside the rest. Let's make that a tradition. Now, the nominations… The first thing of note is, for the first time since we've had the expanded field, there were less than nine Best Picture nominees. Every film we were expecting to get in got in except for "Nightcrawler," which actually came up short in a few other areas (Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress) while only turning up in Best Original Screenplay. It was a well-liked film going into the announcement but it just ended up squeezed by out in those areas at the end of the day. Still, a great push...

With only hours ago before the official selection for the Main Competition is announced, we’ve narrowed our final predictions to the following titles that we’re crystal-balling as the films that will be included on Thierry Fremaux’s highly anticipated list. Despite an obvious drought of Asian auteurs (we’re thinking the rumored frontrunner Takashi Miike won’t be included in tomorrow’s list) who’s to say there won’t be some definite surprises, like Jia Zhang-ke’s A Touch of Sin last year.
Several hopefuls appear not to be ready in time, including Malick, Hsou-hsien, Cristi Puiu, and Innarritu, to name a few. But there does appear to be a high quantity of exciting titles from some of cinema’s leading auteurs. We’re still a bit tentative about whether Xavier Dolan’s latest, Mommy, will get a main competition slot—instead, we’re predicting another surprise,...

SeaWorld is trying really hard to beat the bad rap that “Blackfish” has given it, and close to 200 of the company’s employees weighed in on a local media outlet’s poll asking readers if the documentary changed their perception of the aquatic theme park. As of midday on Thursday, the Orlando Business Journal poll reflected roughly 99 percent of the participants chose “no,” but then skeptical reporter Richard Bilbao did some digging. Turned out 54 percent of the votes — or about 180 of the total 328 votes — were linked to a single SeaWorld IP Address. Also read: Hard-Hitting Ida Awards Nominees...

We are at the end of an era. The very last episode of Breaking Bad played to the heartstrings of millions of fans Sunday night and gave many of true sense of satisfaction. Often times, the best TV series don’t run long enough before being cancelled and ones that do run past three seasons start to stink like a rotting corpse on Walking Dead. Whether you were a fan of Dexter, Seinfeld, Lost or The Sopranos, disappointment gets even the best of them–but not Breaking Bad. There was no ambiguity, no room for interpretation, no loose dangling threads twisting in the wind.

River City
That was really uncomfortable to watch. It’s so difficult to see Robbie clearly afraid of Will, wondering what will set him off and make Will go from holding him to hitting him. Will is acting like Robbie should just get over it and that some flowers will solve the problem without actually addressing it.
And it’s tough to see Robbie scramble to explain to his friends how he hurt himself and then have to fearfully make Will understand that he never told anyone what really happened. This situation has established a pattern at this point, everything is fine, Will loses his temper and hits Robbie, Will does something to make amends and things are peaceful... for awhile.
But now Robbie is obviously aware that Will’s abuse isn’t just a one off or a mistake, but something that could happen...

Craig (from Dark Eye Socket) here with Take Three. This week actress and director Ida Lupino
Ida Lupino a "sensation" circa 1941
Take One: The Bigamist (1953)
The Bigamist probes unseemly marital behaviour and stews on moral sorrows. At its centre is Edmond O’Brien toing and froing between two wives. But behind the camera as director, and in a supporting role as O’Brien’s second, San Francisco wife Phyllis Martin, is Ida Lupino. Her unfussy direction creates lean drama and her performance beautifully matches it, with nary an unnecessary furtive glance or superfluous line spoken. She’s a woman bored on a bus tour of Hollywood stars’ homes, chatted up by O’Brien’s depressed bigamist Harry Graham.
Edmond as Harry: Haven’t you any interest in how the other half lives?
Ida as Phyllis: No, not particularly. I’m just crazy about bus rides – gives me a chance to get off my feet.

Cannes -- After a British invasion on stateside small screens, the Union Jack is being replaced by the French tricolore as Gallic TV programs become increasingly a la mode in the U.S.
The miniseries "Xiii" proved to be a lucky number for French pay TV network Canal Plus, with the English-language drama giving the channel its highest ratings yet for a homegrown fiction series.
The $20 million, four-hour production attracted 1.1 million viewers for each of the two-part episodes, which aired Oct. 6 and Oct. 13. NBC will broadcast "Xiii" in the winter, and Canal Plus is planning a sequel, depending on NBC's ratings.
The adaptation of Jean Van Hamme and William Vance's popular comic book, produced by Cipango, stars Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff. M6 and Canal Plus put up 2 million euros ($2.7 million) each for the political thriller and Canada's Power TV and prodigy funded the remaining budget for the European majority co-production.
