- Ted becomes angry with Lily when he finds out that she has been sabotaging all his relationships that she did not approve of, including his relationship with Robin.
- The gang admit to Robin that they have never watched her on "Come On, Wake Up New York". So they agree that they will all go over to Marshall and Lily's on Friday, get dressed in their pajamas, and watch the show together. Marshall and Barney have polar opposite views on what constitutes appropriate bedtime attire. By the end of the night, one will have converted the other. Meanwhile, Ted's newest relationship with his old girlfriend Karen - who Marshall and Lily in particular hate - has just ended when Karen found one of Robin's earrings in Ted's bed, despite Ted vowing to her that he knows nothing about how it got there. When Ted finds the other earring in Marshall and Lily's bedroom, Lily confesses that she is the one who placed the earring in Ted's bed, thus orchestrating the break-up with Karen. Ted's anger with Lily increases when Lily admits that she has orchestrated more than one of his break-ups, she doing so whenever the girlfriend in question didn't meet what Lily calls her front porch test. Although she didn't officially break them up, Lily admits that she underhandedly made Ted and Robin critically evaluate their relationship which led to the break-up. Will Ted and Lily's friendship be able to withstand what he sees as this betrayal, especially concerning the break-up with Robin?—Huggo
- .Ted has been dating Karen for a few weeks now. Karen has a way of putting everybody down in the gang. She insults Robin's diamond earrings saying that small kids have been exploited in poor African nations, and have had to lose their fingers to give her those earrings.
The group agrees to watch Robin's 4:00am talk show (when Robin finds out that none of them have yet seen the show, even though she has been hosting it for a month). Ted informs them that Karen broke up with him after finding Robin's earring in his bed. Ted discovers the matching earring on Marshall's dresser and mutes the television to confront Marshall, believing him to have sabotaged his relationship.
Robin meanwhile proceeds with the show and shows the audience a photo of her dearest friends, whom she is sure are watching the show.
As extreme events occur on Robin's show still muted, Lily confesses that she has been breaking Ted up with girls who she didn't see passing the "Front Porch Test"-an indication of how they would all live together once they were old. A scene is shown of Marshall, Lily and Ted in the far future playing bridge. Karen simply didn't fit into this picture. Meanwhile a chef's clothing catches on fire on Robin's show and puts it out with a fire extinguisher. The weather man has a heart attack and Robin gives him a mouth to mouth to save his life. Then a guest on the show goes into labor. Robin has no choice but to deliver a baby on live TV.
Lily admits that she has broken up Ted with 6 girlfriends. The first was Angie in college, who was using Ted to get back at her ex. Lily put a Creed CD in her dresser and Ted hates Creed. Lily also admits to breaking up Ted and Robin as Robin was never going to be the mother of Ted's children. Lily felt that Ted would always blame Robin for the lack of kids in his life, and hence it was better to separate them early. So, she fed them questions and ideas that led to their breakup. She told Ted that he wants to be married in 5 yrs, while she tells Robin that she wants to be in Tokyo or Paris in the same period.
Robin returns home to learn the truth behind her break-up with Ted, which Lily insists she did not want to happen. Ted says he doesn't want to be on that front porch with Lily, when they get old. She had no right to interfere in his relationships. Ted heads into the bar the next day to find Karen waiting, having had the situation explained to her by Lily. Karen hands Ted a letter from Lily, which contains an apology, and lets Ted know that Lily has prepared a fine dinner in Ted's apartment for him and Karen. Ted breaks up with Karen anyway after she says Ted cannot ever see Lily again and he imagines what the future would be like without her and Marshall.
Returning to the apartment, Ted asks Robin to be his "plus one" and they enjoy the meal Lily prepared. They wonder whether or not they would still be together if not for Lily's intervention. Ted then makes a mock proposal to Robin, asking her to be his "backup wife". She accepts.
Marshall wears a nightshirt to the pajama party to watch Robin's show, while Barney wears a silk suit. Barney insists his clothing choice is superior, citing the possibility of attractive women coming to his home at night and seeing how good he looks (he hopes that one day 2 hot chicks will show up at his apartment to have a threesome and he wants to look his absolute best for the same), but then admits how unlikely that is and uncomfortable the "suitjamas" are. Marshall convinces Barney to try a nightshirt instead (he says its the freest feeling in the world, and he feels like he is flying). Barney and Marshall delight in their nightshirts, having a dream about flying together in them. Barney starts wearing nightshirts to sleep. A week later, an attractive woman shows up at his apartment at night-but, upon seeing his nightshirt, she decides to leave, much to Barney's chagrin
