Killing animals in horror movies is a lazy and problematic plot device that ruins the viewing experience. The mirror jump scare is an overused tactic that fails to deliver genuine terror due to predictability. Characters splitting up in horror films defies common sense and undermines suspense, relying on tired clichés.
Movie tropes are inevitable, with some proving effective, but certain clichés in horror movies can spoil the overall viewing experience once they're recognized. While tropes are not inherently bad, and clever filmmakers can subvert or repurpose them, many overused plot devices have become stale and predictable. From the gratuitous killing of animals to elicit cheap emotional responses, to the convenient lack of cell phone service to isolate characters, these tropes often serve as crutches for lazy storytelling.
Other clichés, such as the mirror jump scare, or characters falling while running from the killer, have been so overused that they can...

Horror movie character tropes can both enhance and diminish the quality of a film. Some tropes, like the evil supernatural entity or the warning harbinger, can be fun to revisit, while others, like the promiscuous "bad girl" or the token minority character, can be offensive and harmful. The final girl is a widely recognized and enduring trope, representing the protagonist who survives and takes down the villain.
While every genre has recognizable clichés, the horror genre is especially filled with well-worn aspects, including some classic horror movie character tropes. The concept of a trope in and of itself isn't necessarily negative. Character tropes help divulge information about a character to an audience quickly, working to curb the problems that arise from lengthy exposition. However, horror movies have gained a number of predictable tropes that can suffocate the quality of the overall film and have become so prevalent that movies like...

Matthew Vaughn's upcoming action film starring Chris Hemsworth and Sam Rockwell could potentially break Hemsworth's personal box office record, working on a non-franchise film. Hemsworth's highest-grossing film domestically that isn't tied to a big-name franchise is 12 Strong, which earned $45 million in the US. This collaboration could surpass that number. At the worldwide box office, Hemsworth's non-franchise films have never broken $100 million. This project presents an opportunity for him to finally achieve that milestone.
Chris Hemsworth will be starring in a Matthew Vaughn action film that could potentially break a personal box office record for the actor. Vaughn has recently revealed in an interview with Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast that he has been producing a "very, very, very special" movie starring Chris Hemsworth and Sam Rockwell. The Western genre has evolved over time, with different subgenres exploring more violent and self-reflective themes. Genre-blending has become common in Western movies, with directors like Tarantino and the Coen Brothers putting modern spins on classic ideas. Western movies have successfully utilized genre mixing to offer fresh interpretations and subvert expectations, adding new elements to old ideas.
Western movies have seen many iterations over the years, including many films that have mixed it with other genres. The Western genre is essential to American pop culture and film history, with its golden age of heroic cowboys, gunslingers, and lawmen from the 1940s through the 1960s. However, the style of Westerns significantly evolved, reflecting cultural changes. The Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone in the '60s popularized the subgenre, exploring more violent, anti-hero-like characters. Despite recent setbacks in the quality of Marvel Studios’ projects, the MCU still has an impressive lineup of upcoming movies. While there have been discussions about reducing the number of releases, Spider-Man remains a consistently lucrative franchise, drawing audiences to theaters. Currently, the MCU features three standalone Spider-Man movies, with a fourth installment confirmed by producer Amy Pascal several months ago. However, production was temporarily halted during the WGA Strike. Recent rumors suggested Jon Watts might return as the director for ‘Spider-Man 4,’ but a reliable source, MyTimeToShineHello, has allegedly confirmed that Jon Watts will not be directing the upcoming Spider-Man movie, according to posts on X.
I was able to confirm that Jon Watts is not coming back to direct Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4. Who would you like to see directing the film?
— MyTimeToShineHello (@MyTimeToShineH) February 1, 2024
Drew Goddard is once again emerging as the leading candidate for the director’s role.

MCU has quite a slate of movies coming up, even though Marvel Studios has hit a rough patch with the last couple of projects. There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.
So far, talking about the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has three standalone movies and a fourth on the way. This was confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that the work on the sequel has been ongoing but stopped due to the solidarity with the ongoing WGA Strike at the time. Just several months ago, rumors were circulating that Watts is ready to return again as ‘Spider-Man’ 4 director.

It’s a fairly packed month on Hulu this February thanks to the addition of some interesting TV shows from FX and ABC. While the streamer’s own original content is somewhat limited – Life + Beth is returning for season 2 – you can also catch the new series of Feud this month. The new installment in Ryan Murphy’s juicy anthology show is based on the bestseller Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer, and tells the story of Truman Capote’s betrayal and fall-out with New York’s most glamorous socialites. The cast is absolutely stacked, with Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny and Calista Flockhart all swearing delicious revenge on Tom Hollander’s Capote.
Also via Hulu in February comes the third season of Abbott Elementary, along with new episodes of The Connors, The Good Doctor, Will Trent,...

Horror, like few other genres, can bring out intense emotion from its audience. The only other genre that comes close is comedy. One makes your heart race with fear, the other makes you laugh. Then there's the combination of the two: the horror-comedy. When done right, they'll have you in stitches while ripping you open at the same time. There have been some great ones over the years which take a lighter approach to classics that came before. Joe Dante's Gremlins was a chaotic wink to monster movies of the 50s. Tremors did the same. Scary Movie started out as an over-the-top parody of Scream. The Cabin in the Woods took on The Evil Dead and every "killer in the woods" trope.

Exclusive: Patrick Warburton will star in and produce The Unearthly, an indie blending elements of sci-fi, comedy and horror that will go into production in Connecticut early this year. Directing the pic for Centerboro Productions is Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye).
In The Unearthly, a team of paranormal investigators live-stream a “Halloween Special” ghost hunt of a notorious haunted mansion, finding the source of the evil at hand to be far more deadly than they ever could have imagined. Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder, archaic Emf meter, and his own smarts in his ghost hunting. Director Drew Goddard's 2011 horror/comedy The Cabin in the Woods offered audiences a satirical, self-referential, and tongue-in-cheek take on the standard tropes of the horror genre. Playing on the blended lines between horror and dark comedy, the film -- written by Goddard and Joss Whedon -- presented a fairly run-of-the-mill story punctuated by self-aware send-ups of its own plot and genre. Despite its satirical bent, or perhaps because of it, it has in subsequent years become one of the most memorable horror films of the decade.

From The Cabin in the Woods to House of Leaves, meta-horror can be one of the most entertaining sub-genres for die-hard fans when made by passionate creators. However, I think videogames are the medium with the most potential when it comes to immersing us in meta-narratives. I mean, the very concept of someone controlling a character’s actions through an interactive experience already adds an additional layer to the story, so it makes sense that developers might try and use this fragile fourth wall to scare players.
In 2023, we saw an excellent example of this in Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2, a long-awaited love-letter to survival-horror that relishes in simulating both gaming and storytelling tropes. And if you loved the game as much as I did, you might find yourself craving for even more meta scares – which is why we’ve come up with this list recommending 6 of the creepiest meta-horror games in recent memory.

With Halloween now just days away, America’s thoughts turn increasingly to witches, demons, the paranormal and scaring the heck out of ourselves. And of course, few things accomplish this goal better than horror movies, a genre the United States has largely claimed as its own. To get everyone in the spirit, the website bank-locations.net launched a state-by-state study of Google to discern (based on searches) which Halloween-themed flicks were most popular in each state of the union.
To generate its conclusions, the research team analyzed 200+ top-rated horror films from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, then studied specific searches for each movie. For example, for “The Shining,” they gathered keywords like “watch the shining,” “the shining full movie,” “”the shining streaming, “The shining netflix” and “where to watch the shining.”

The Cabin in the Woods is a satirical horror film that celebrates and critiques the tropes and clichés of the genre in the early-2000s. Despite being a critique, the film successfully stands on its own, earning critical acclaim and audience support, with awards and high scores on Rotten Tomatoes. While horror films have evolved since its release, The Cabin in the Woods remains relevant for its ability to have fun, provide scares, and be an enjoyable watch in a genre often devoid of fun.

The Cabin in the Woods was a critical and commercial success when it was released, but unlike other horror movies, it never received a sequel. Director Drew Goddard's comments on a potential sequel makes it seemingly impossible that a The Cabin in the Woods 2 will ever happen. Other films have replicated a similar sci-fi horror vibe that The Cabin in the Woods delivered.
More than any other film genre, horror is defined, to some extent, by its sequels. In the past several years alone, a half-dozen major horror franchises, including Child's Play and Pet Semetary, welcomed new entries to the big screen. Because horror films are relatively inexpensive to produce and come with some degree of guaranteed success, sequels are a perfect way to keep a familiar franchise afloat by giving fans more of what they already like. Despite that, one of the most acclaimed horror movies in recent memory,...

Some viewers find that Halloween H20 is a better reboot than Halloween 2018, as it allowed Laurie to move on from her past and adopt a new identity. The twist in The Cabin in the Woods, where monsters are manipulated by technicians, was seen as nonsensical and not scary by many viewers. Some viewers consider The Evil Dead remake to be the worst movie in the series as it lacked the essence and fun of the original.

Warning: spoilers for various horror movies.
Fan theories often provide explanations and fill in gaps in horror movie stories, potentially changing the entire narrative of iconic films. Theories such as Sam Loomis being the same character in Psycho and Halloween, or the audience being the true villains in Cabin in the Woods, present new perspectives on these movies. Theories about Freddy Krueger's identity as Nancy Thompson's father or Laurie Strode causing Michael Myers' escape in Halloween 2018 challenge the established stories, leaving audiences questioning what they thought they knew about these characters.
Horror movies are never safe from fan theories, but there are some that, if true, would completely change some iconic horror movies. Horror movies usually set up sequels or continuations or leave a couple of mysteries to keep the conversation going after the credits roll, making way for a number of fan theories providing possible explanations of what just happened on the screen.

When it comes to horror movies, one of the most well-known subgenres is slashers. Each film follows this familiar formula -- a killer brandishing a blade of some sort tries to murder a group of people (usually teenagers), with only a final girl surviving at the very end. Over the years, this murderous modus operandi has expanded and evolved to create some truly terrifying flicks. One slasher movie that does not get enough attention for its innovation of the genre is 2015's The Final Girls. Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson and starring American Horror Story's Taissa Farmiga and Malin Akerman from horror comedy Slayers, The Final Girls uses the slasher standard audiences have known for decades and infuses it with a clever meta concept that does not seem to get the credit it deserves.

Many horror movies of the modern era have failed to impress viewers with their heavy reliance on CGI and cheap jump scares. However, even in the harsh landscape of modern cinematic critique, some horror movies have impressed even the most skeptical. The most successful movies rely on the themes of traditional horror, creating a provocative narrative that can't be accomplished with special effects alone.
Films like Paranormal Activity and The Conjuring, despite their controversy, were fresh takes on overdone subgenres that began popular franchises. Others like Get Out and A Quiet Place revolutionized the genre and offered a captivating, fresh narrative. These modern horror movies were instant hits, ensuring they go down in horror movie history as undeniable classics.
