Karl arrives at Bree's for a confab. Mary Alice tells us that to save her assets Bree is accepting Karl's suggestions for fake accounts, a second set of books, and creative accounting. She's drawing the line at having someone break in and steal her stuff since Orson will get half of it. She calls him repugnant and says no. He asks her to sit and close her eyes. He paints a picture of Orson owning half her business and half her assets, dating a young bimbo who's wearing her pearls, using her crystal for an ashtray and using her first edition Robert Frost as a coaster. He says if she can cope with that picture he'll leave. Burglary is sounding good to Bree now.
Mary Alice tells us about masks as we see the Lane-ys wearing them: Parker in a Halloween mask; Mike wearing a protective mask to paint; Gaby wearing a facial mask. Then there are those who wear masks every day and we see Dave smiling as he strides down the street.
He comes to Susan's house and chats up M.J. about Susan and Jackson and whether Jackson talks about the nightclub fire and if the police have stopped by. M.J. says they haven't. Dave says to let him know if they do. M.J. wonders why. Just to make sure the police are being nice to him says Dave.
Gaby has bought an expensive vase and is convincing herself it was worth it. Juanita comes in and demands a new bed. Gaby says no, she just bougth her a new bed. They fight with Juanita saying she overheard Gaby saying they were rich and Gaby saying Juanita should stop acting like a spoiled brat. Juanita points out Gaby's stupid vase. Gaby defends it and sends Juanita and her sister to their rooms.
Jackson is making it look like he's at home in Susan's home to fool the immigration authorities. Susan says to repay her she wants a cake. He says he'll go her one better and throw an engagement party so they'll have pictures to show immigration. He points out that they can't tell anyone, not even the girls. He thanks her. She says although it's complicated she's glad to do it since she missed him and the house has been lonely without him. He thinks this is the green light for loving. Susan says it's not.
Lynette is taking out the trash and spies Tom sitting in his car in the driveway forlorn. She asks how his job interview went. He says it went okay until the 30-year-old interviewing him asked about Twitter and Tom didn't know what it was. Lynette does. He's bummed. She tells him not to worry about it. He feels like a dinosaur marching into a tar pit. Fifty guys showed up for the interview and Tom was by far the oldest. He feels as if his time has passed. She tries to buck him but comes up a bit short.
Gaby brings Juanita to the church soup kitchen to force her to help the poor. She's not so interested herself. She runs into an old friend, Fran, who she thinks is there volunteering also until Fran tells her she's actually there to eat.
Jackson and Susan arrive at Mike and Katherine's. Katherine is morose until Susan announces the happy news, and then she is overjoyed. Mike, not so much, claiming to worried about M.J.
An interior designer is showing Gaby and Carlos fabric for the sofa. After she leaves, Gaby marvels that that same woman decorated Fran's house seven years ago and now Fran has no house at all. She freaks about how that could possibly happen. Carlos says, given that the fabric is 200 dollars a yard, it could happen to them too. Gaby obsesses wondering if it was drinking or gambling. Carlos wonders why she cares so much.
At Susan and Jackson's engagement party, Dave congratulates Jackson and asks how he's been since the fire. Jackson says Dave was the big hero and he was just the doofus who got stuck in the men's room. Orson says he'd like to forget it. Jackson says he would too except he has to go talk to the cops on Tuesday. Dave wonders what the cops want. Jackson says they wonder if he saw anything suspicious. Orson asks if he did. He starts to recount how he was backstage when Dave "accidentally" knocks over some wineglasses to stop him. It's red wine and Dave worries it won't come out. Orson says Bree can get it out in a jiffy and wonders where she is.
We cut to her breaking and entering her own house with Karl. Bree is a terrible thief, she keeps re-arranging things and he keeps tell her to ransack not decorate. Karl asks if she's nailing him as they discussed to keep him from being suspicious. Bree says it's none of his business, but yes she is. Karl wonders if Orson is a "strictly missionary" guy. Bree wonders if he must always be so crude. He wonders if she must always be such a priss, saying it must be exhausting. She says being a lady takes effort. He says if she laid off she might have some fun.
Tom runs into his freshman year roommate from college at the engagement party and he looks amazing, she and Tom can't believe it. Tom asks his secret.
Jackson and Susan receive a gift from Katherine and Mike. Mike points out that he's off the hook for alimony now so he can afford a gift. Susan freaks and pulls Jackson aside. He didn't realize this and she points out that she needs the money. (Bree arrives at the party.) He says he can chip in. She points out this is not a cake for Shirley in accounting it's money she needs to live. She can't marry him. He pleads they'll send him back. She says it's Canada, not Iran. He says he can't believe he finally got his dream job and has to leave. Susan says she'll try to talk to Mike.
Tom reveals to Lynette that his old college roommate's secret to looking young is a facelift and he wants to do it too. Lynette objects. Tom says his buddy said it gave him a leg up in job interviews. Lynette wonders what he would do if she came home with giant boobs. He says he would learn to live with it. She says they can't afford it. Tom says it's an investment in the future and they can't afford to not do it.
Bree and Orson return home to the ransacked house. Orson immediately swears it wasn't him.
Gaby goes to find Fran at the soup kitchen to give her money and Gaby finally finds out what happened: Fran's husband died. By the time he did, they were financially wiped out. She says they're all just an accident, a tumor, or a bad business decision away from standing in line for free soup. Gaby gives her a hundred bucks but says she disagrees, pointing out that Carlos went blind for five years and they went broke but they worked their asses off and made it back. Fran points out that doesn't mean nothing bad will ever happen again. She hopes it all works out for Gaby and that she appreciates what she has while she has it.
Mike stares pensively out the window. Katherine enters to arrange some flowers and he asks her to marry him. She says yes and wonders what brought it on. He says it seemed like the right time. She's thrilled. As she hugs him she sees Susan and Jackson across the street and realizes why he asked.
At the Hodge house Orson and Bree are cleaning up. Orson says the thieves should be shot. Bree points out that his victims probably felt this way too. He agrees, saying this must be karma. Bree notices a drawing of a jester's mask that was taken. Orson drew it from memory. They bought it during a trip to Italy. She loved it, and said that all her life she'd been wearing a mask but with him she was so comfortable she could take it off. He says he faxed the drawing to the shop in Venice and ordered her another. She's touched that he did this. He says she obviously doesn't know how much he cares about her then.
Katherine answers the phone. It's Dave, who is asking her to look in on his house from time to time because he's getting back to work as a motivational speaker. He claims he's doing his usual route of the Pacific Northwest but he's holding a passport and a ticket to Brazil. Susan knocks on the door while they're on the phone and Katherine tells Dave to hold on, putting the phone down. Susan asks for Mike but he's at work. Katherine wonders what's wrong, is it the wedding? Susan, figuring Mike will probably tell her anyway, spills the immigration/alimony dilemma. Katherine wants Susan to get married so she tells her she'll talk to Mike about. She goes back to the phone but Dave hangs up, smiling.
Lynette goes to work and the receptionist asks how she is. She says her husband wants a facelift he doesn't need with money they don't have. He warns her to take a look at Bruce in accounting who just had a little nip and tuck. Lynette asks for his extension.
Bree goes to Karl, full of new love for Orson thinking she acted rashly and that maybe they can make it work. He says he's heard it all before and that every woman gets divorce cold feet. He says she will change her mind. She's amused saying "so you know everything I'm going to say." He says not only that, he knows everything she's not saying: what if she walks away from everything she's invested in this relationship will she ever find another man, will be she be alone? He wonders if that's close. Bree says it is. Karl says she has nothing to worry about. She's a beautiful, elegant, classy woman and there's no way she'll end up alone. She wonders if he says that to every woman. He say no way, he gets a lot of uggos in there who will die alone and get eaten by their cats.
Tom comes home and Lynette has invited Bruce over for dinner. Tom meets Bruce and sees his wind tunnel face and Bruce is happy to recommend it. Tom is surprised by Bruce's crazy face but Bruce assures him that Tom can look that good too. They sneak off to the kitchen and Tom says his work will be done by a reputable surgeon and that he's going to take the risk. She wonders why he's being so stubborn. He wonders why she cares so much. She cares because she doesn't want to have plastic surgery and if he has it she feels he'll want her to also. She thinks they won't look like they belong together anymore. He says he just wants to get rid of a few wrinkles. She says she doesn't see wrinkles, she sees their life and traces each wrinkle to a time in their life: her cancer, their financial struggles, all the laughs they've had.
At the dinner table with Jackson, Susan gets a text from Mike saying he'll keep paying alimony. She and Jackson are relieved and grateful. Susan sends him a thank you text. And of course it goes to Katherine who is behind it.
Jackson reiterates how much he appreciates what Susan's doing as they head off to the courthouse and promises to help pitch in. He says just because it's a fake marriage it doesn't mean it can't be great. They come out to Katherine who's outfitted their car with a "just married" sign and cans. Just as they're about to leave immigration officials pull up and drag him away. Susan says they're getting married. The agent says not today.Mike comes over and wonders what's up, Katherine explains that INS is sending Jackson back to Canada. Mike seems to understand now. In the background Dave is grinning on his bike, clearly having called immigration.
At the Hodge house Orson eats in the kitchen and the phone rings. It's for Bree, it's the storage unit company saying they accidentally overcharged for the unit she recently rented. Orson hangs up and looks at his drawing of the jester mask and begins to understand.
Mary Alice returns to tell us about masks, why people wear them: some conceal anxiety about growing older (Lynette looking in the mirror); some hide fears of financial ruin (Gaby looking at fabric with her decorator);others cover up a love that continues to linger (Mike giving Katherine an engagement ring).
And then, says Mary Alice, there are those who let their masks slip and if you look into their eyes you'll see exactly what they're capable of, as Orson opens the door to the storage unit and sees all their stuff including the jester mask.
