This episode is so intense, it's extremely emotional, and it is so very fantastic! It's dramatic and thrilling, and they manage to make you feel a million things with this episode.

Every moment is so good, every conversation is intense. Every story reaches a high point. The actors are amazing this episode. It makes you think long and hard about right and wrong, about black and white. About compassion and hate.

The music in this whole episode is also perfectly selected.

I have watched this episode so, so many times, and I always cry like a baby at the end...

Outstanding television!

Warning: Spoilers
This actually might be my personal favorite episode. The boy who needs a transplant. The death row patient who is willing to give it up. Merideth basically letting him kill him self. Bailey losing it in Derick's OR. Meredith showing up at the execution. Dereck bringing Merideth to Christina to comfort her and also bring them back together. Excellent 10/10. This episode made me feel every emotion.

One of the best of the series

Warning: Spoilers
Without giving anything away, I will simply say this is an episode to watch. Between Meredith's sympathy for a murderer, Izzie being clueless about her diagnosis, learning how important organ transplants can be, and finally, for me, it was the scene in the OR with Derek and Bailey. She was outstanding. You knew with every ounce of her she wanted the patient to die, but just couldn't go through with Derek letting him die. Chandra Wilson gave an excellent performance.

Hands down, one of the best series episodes I've seen in my life
smoothhoney126524 June 2009
You know, it takes a lot to impress me and even more to touch me so deep that I break down and cry. And this episode touched me so deep that I don't think it could go any deeper. I won't lose one word about the plot because I wouldn't want to spoil it for anybody who will see it. But be assured: It will be an overwhelming experience that makes you realize so many things about yourself that you will probably want to laugh and cry at the same time. Although there is nothing remotely funny about this episode.

There are not many times that television creates magical moments. This episode is definitely one of them.

10 stars!

The BEST episode of this series!!!
ladyamysta23 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've seen all of Grey's up to the current, aired season. This is BY FAR the best episode. The morality struggle while Derek is trying to save the death row inmate, despite his personal views all while Bailey is desperately trying to save Jackson gave me chills all over again upon rewatching. First rate script writing and acting, hands down!

Funny
geohv-6779627 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has a lot of funny parts. Sadly at the end the black hole Christina with the liquid nitrogen in her veins shows up when Derek comes to her door with Meredith in the car looking for help because Meredith won't stop crying and the first thing out of Cristinas mouth is a snotty question what did you do, propose. The best thing the writers ever did was get rid of the character of Christina.

Warning: Spoilers
This Episode begins with Izzie, she still sees Denny as a ghost. William is knocking his head on the bed end. William has a brain bleed. William still wants to donate his organs to Jackson. Lexie broke Sloan his penis during sex. William is in surgery, Derek performs it. Bailey wants William his organs for Jackson. Jackson gets into surgery, there are organs for him. William his surgery was successful. William gets executed, Meredith spectates it. William past away. Jackson wakes up. Meredith cries after William's execution. Amazing Episode of Grey's Anatomy Season 5, what a emotional rollercoaster was this Episode. Jackson survived it and William past away!

Denny needs to go
Carson478511 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was amazing for so many reasons. The the humour of Little Grey, scratch that, Lexie (way to go Lexie!) and Sloan's mishap and the drama of the final twists of the two surgical plot lines was excellently balanced. It's unusual to see Bailey or the Richard in the centre of the ethical quandaries of the show and to see them both care so much was beautiful - to see Bailey's turmoil play out in public rather than behind the closed doors the show usually places such questions was electrifying.

The continuance of Hunt and Cristina's saga was touching. But Derek arriving to comfort Meredith at the end was too far-fetched - although the episode didn't really give us an account of the intervening 5 days... so maybe he would do it. Anyways if it gets Meredith and Cristina back together it's fine.

But Denny needs to leave. His ghost is ruining the memory of his character - and getting in the way of Karev and Stevens. Not to mention that his whole shtick didn't even make sense this time. It was painful to spend so much of the episode on this and the only reason this otherwise excellent episode isn't rated higher.

Despite other good elements, all stars lost to the crazy Izzie
apd86 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
HATE Izzie. Other than being so stupid, not seeing someone or seeking help for her delusion. It affected her ability as a doctor which directly affected the patient treatment. She should know better and find treatment sooner.

Takes the cheap way out....
trims1 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The entire PDR plot is a cheap emotional play designed to make people feel morally justified for co.pletelt unethical and illegal actions. It's disgusting.

As someone who deals with professional ethics, it's a disgrace to watch this.

You have a CLEAR, REPEATED, SANE request to be left to die. NOTHING overrides that.

The entire episode and the one before it are nothing but a long string of doctors substituting THEIR morals and ethics for the patient, in CLEAR violation of the AMA standards of patient care and patient rights.

The PDR guy should have died the prior episode. Period. No excuse. Worse, the script provides a convenient duex ex machina to prevent everyone from seeing the actual consequences of denying the PDR from donating his parts?

You don't have to feel an ounce of empathy for the PDR guy to know that what was done to him is just as bad as what he was convicted of.

This is cheap melodrama, and one of the worse episodes in the entire series.

Human rights & moral code missing big time
johannasuojanen2 July 2023
I'm disgusted by the violation of basic human rights in this episode. Everyone has a right to refuse a treatment, no matter who they are, even a serial killer on a death row. It is a crime to operate a patient against his will. In real life both Derek and the hospital would face criminal charges for that.

Also, what kind of an egoistic psychopath (Chief) takes in an inoperable, dying boy, and orders a member of his staff to save him, just to make himself and the hospital look better?? He caused so much unnecessary pain for the family and stress, trauma and heartbreak for Bailey who wasn't able to perform a miracle.

The whole episode was just, ugh.
