From its 2004 inception, True/False Film Fest has turned into one of the most prestigious documentary focused film festivals in the world. The lineup for 2014's Festival was announced Wednesday evening, and it's filled with a number of favorites from Sundance ("Happy Valley," "Rich Hill"), Toronto ("The Unknown Known," "Jodorowsky's Dune," "Manakamana"), and more. Among the more notable titles are a number of Sundance award-winners: World Documentary Audience Award-winner "The Green Prince," World Cinema directing and editing-winner "20,000 Days on Earth," U.S. Documentary cinematography-winner "E-Team", and "The Overnighters," which won a Special Jury Award for Intuitive Filmmaking. Other highlights include the 2007 documentary favorite "My Kid Could Paint That" and Richard Linklater's "Boyhood," a non-documentary, but one with a certain level of fascination for True/False given the similarities to Michael Apted's "Up" series. The festival will also hold a number of secret...

I know that the Sundance Film Festival ended over a week ago, but in the six days I was at Sundance (and on screeners in the days before), I saw 25 movies. I wrote full reviews for 13 of them. My Full Sundance reviews: 'The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz' "The Overnighters" "Rudderless" "Fed Up" "Marmato" "Love Child" "Land Ho!" "The Voices" "Happy Valley" "My Prairie Home" "Life Itself" "Mitt" "Web Junkie" But that left 12 movies that I just didn't have the time to write my usual 1000-to-1750 words on. Since getting back from Park City, I've been slowly working my way through capsule reviews for those 12 movies. These are roughly the length of my Take Me To The Pilots entries, which means that in this format, people are going to complain about all of the text and the lack of paragraphs. Sorry. Because I'm just one part of HitFix's awesome Sundance team,...

Thanks to everyone who commented on or read our Sundance coverage! We braved Park City's confounding bus system for you, you know. (If you appreciated it why not like us on Facebook and follow Michael and Glenn and I on twitter?) I had attended Sundance twice before. Once before I was a writer during college and once officially as press in 2010 when the highlight was dancing with Parker Posey at a party! But this felt like a first time again, mostly because I brought a team so we did it up right. Well, mostly right. 75% right. We definitely didn't attend enough parties but there's always next year if -- no, I can't even think about leaving NYC again any time soon. I've woken up in my own cozy bed the past few mornings for the first time in two weeks (a quick La trip was before Sundance, remember) and it feels great.

Matt Sandusky, adopted son of convicted sex offender Jerry Sandusky, made a surprise appearance at the Sundance premiere of “Happy Valley,” a documentary about the abuse scandal and its impact on the Penn State community. It was Sandusky’s first public appearance since he told police his father, a longtime coach at the school, abused him. Sandusky and his family have since tried to change their names. “I’m happy with my involvement in the film and how it was told,” Sandusky told the crowd, many of whom went to Penn State. “The ending is what I want to be seen — what we’ve.

Abandoned Mine starts its VOD and limited theatrical release today, and we caught up with writer/director Jeff Chamberlain for our latest Q&A feature. He talks about taking on Abandoned Mine as his first feature film, creating the legend and characters from the movie, and the challenges of filming in an actual mine:
I’ve read that the story for Abandoned Mine came from Scott Woldman. How did you two get together for this project and why was this a story you wanted to direct?
Jeff Chamberlain: One day I was sitting in the office of my producing partner Mark Victor (Poltergeist). We were discussing the kind of project I was looking for to direct. He pulled a script off the shelf called The Mine by Scott Woldman. I loved the title and the concept – the way Mark described it. After reading it, I still loved the concept.

Los Angeles -- Al Pacino will play Joe Paterno in a movie about the late Penn State football coach.
Producer Edward R. Pressman confirms Brian De Palma will direct "Happy Valley," the tentative title of the film, based on Joe Posnanski's best-seller "Paterno."
"'Happy Valley' reunites the `Scarface' and `Carlito's Way' team of De Palma and Pacino for the third time and I can't think of a better duo to tell this story of a complex, intensely righteous man who was brought down by his own tragic flaw," Pressman said in a statement. No start or release dates were given for the film.
While Pressman said the plot remains "under wraps," Posnanski's book followed Paterno's final years, as the winningest coach in college football history saw his career end in disgrace in 2011 with the sex abuse scandal involving assistant Jerry Sandusky.

Joe Paterno might be gone, but he's certainly not forgotten. Brian de Palma is directing a movie called "Happy Valley" about the former Penn State head football coach, and he's brought Al Pacino on board to play the central character.
De Palma and Pacino are best known for working together on "Scarface," and are an exciting pair to tackle such a touchy story. Paterno had been beloved as the head of the Penn State football team until it was revealed that he was complicit in a cover up about former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky being a pedofile. Not long after he was fired from his position at Penn State, Paterno died of cancer and, to some, of a broken heart.
"Happy Valley" is based off Joe Posnanski's book "Paterno," which is a biography that covers both the scandal and Paterno's life before it. It will be interesting to see if...

Director Brian De Palma and acting legend Al Pacino have made two movies together: The classic gangster drama "Scarface" and the nearly-as-classic gangster drama "Carlito's Way." So the fact that they are about to get together for a third film is kind of big news. So which icon of American crime are they going to profile this time? Al Capone? Bugsy Malone? John Gotti?
Well, how about legendary college football coach Joe Paterno?
Close enough.
Paterno, of course, is one of the most famous (or infamous) figures in the history of college athletics, having led Penn State to a record number of wins of his career, which spanned decades. He also promoted what was called "the Penn State Way," which emphasized scholarship and morality over football. And that, of course, made it even more ironic and troubling when he was implicated in a cover up of the notorious sexual abuse...

1.) We've already seen how much Ashton Kutcher looks like Steve Jobs in the upcoming biopic jOBS, which will close the Sundance Film Festival on January 26. Now, USA Today gives us our first look at Josh Gad as Jobs' Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. I wouldn't quite say the resemblance is uncanny, but a successful biopic has never been purely dependent on casting lookalikes. Open Road Films has already picked up the film for an April release. 2.) After watching recent '80s remakes like Fright Night, Conan the Barbarian and Red Dawn set the box-office on fire (no, not really), Warner Bros. has decided now is the time to reboot Gremlins. The studio would have to work out a deal with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment first, and negotiations have fallen through several times over the years, but a source seems to think there's a decent chance we could see Gizmo and...

Duo set to work in tandem for a third time after De Palma reportedly signs up for film about late American football coach
Brian De Palma and Al Pacino are to reunite for a biopic about Pennsylvania State University's controversial former American football coach, Joe Paterno, who was forced to retire after a sexual abuse scandal took place on his watch.
Pacino was first reported to be in talks to play Paterno in September last year. Now Deadline reports that De Palma has agreed to take on directing duties for the drama, which is titled Happy Valley. The pair last worked together on the gangster tale Carlito's Way in 1993, and before that on 1983's iconic mob drama Scarface.

Al Pacino and director Brian De Palma, who worked together on "Scarface" and "Carlito's Way," are re-teaming for "Happy Valley," a new movie about the controversial Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. The film will be based on Joe Posnanski's biography "Paterno," which is a NY Times best-seller. Pacino will play the winningest coach in college football history. But when it came out that his former defense coordinator Jerry Sandusky is a pedophile and Paterno didn't properly report the scandal, the coach was fired. He died shortly after of cancer. Ncaa reacted by removing Paterno's wins going back to the cover-up. Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse against young boys and will spend the rest of his life in prison. Producers are currently in talks with David McKenna (American History X, Blow) to write the script.

Al Pacino and director Brian De Palma will reunite for Happy Valley, a film focusing on Penn State's football coach Joe Paterno, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The duo worked together on the legendary 1983 crime drama Scarface, and Carlito's Way ten years later in 1993. Edward R. Pressman announced on Wednesday that he's optioned the pic based on the best seller by Joe Posnanski. Joseph Vincent "Joe" Paterno who was also referred to as "JoePa," coached the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1966 until 2011 when he was fired by the university after a child sex abuse scandal which involved his former assistant coach Joe Sandusky. FBI director Louis Freeh conducted an investigation which, in July last year, found that PAterno concealed facts relating to Sandusky's sexual abuse of young boys.

The closest you’re gonna get to a true-and-blue Scarface reunion is with the upcoming film project Happy Valley, a biopic based on the life of Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno. The film will be directed by Brian De Palma and will star Al Pacino as the venerated-turned-scorned college football legend.
De Palma and Pacino teamed up previously for Scarface and Carlito’s Way.
Paterno’s story is a disheartening one, and I don’t think it’s necessary to divulge all the details of what Paterno and his staff were accused of intentionally hiding from the proper authorities. If we ever needed proof of the validity of the justice system, just remember that Sandusky is slowly rotting away in a jail cell for the rest of his pathetic life.
Amidst the scandal at Penn State, Paterno was fired from his head coach position and not long after succumbed to cancer.

"Scarface" director Brian De Palma and actor Al Pacino are re-teaming for the biopic "Happy Valley" about Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno.
The iconic and beloved coach spent his life building a successful and cherished football program, and he was considered the most successful coach in college football history.
His reputation collapsed when it came to light that he and others in the football program were aware that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was a prolific pedophile.
They did little to stop his actions in fear of bad publicity over the program, allowing Sandusky to continue molesting boys for years. When he was caught, Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse.
Paterno was fired, his program crushed, a fabled statue of him was torn down, and he was stripped of his wins going back to the coverup.

Update: As first reported months ago, Al Pacino was trying to put together a movie about the life of Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno. At the time it was just a hypothetical project without a script or a director, but now Deadline tells us it's gotten considerably more real: Brian De Palma will direct the film, temporarily titled Happy Valley. Of course, the Scarface reunion of Pacino and De Palma is already intriguing enough, but Deadline also reports that American History X scribe Dave McKenna is in talks to write the script, based on Joe Posnanski's biography of the late icon. Combine all those ingredients together and this is starting to sound like it could be a damned fine film about a man's fall from grace. Previously: It had to happen at...

Looks like the iconic Scarface star Al Pacino is about to say hello to his...old friend. Deadline reports that Brian De Palma, who directed Pacino in both Scarface and Carlito's Way, has signed on to helm Happy Valley, the upcoming biopic of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. Based on Joe Pasnanski's NY Times bestselling book, the film will presumably follow Paterno's career building the Penn State football program into a powerhouse from the ground up in the 1980s and also cover his fall from grace and death that closely followed the horrific Jerry Sandusky sex scandal which rocked the nation a couple of years ago. One could make the case that De Palma hasn't directed anything good since the first Mission: Impossible back in 1996, so perhaps reteaming with the star of two of his most popular movies is exactly the shot in the arm that the director needs.

Holiday shopping turned tragic on Tuesday (Dec. 11) afternoon as an unidentified gunman began shooting in a Portland, Or area shopping mall. Local news reports indicate that at least two people were killed before police could neutralize the suspected shooter.
The Oregonian newspaper reported on its website that the shooting began around 3:30pm at the Clackamas Town Center mall in Happy Valley, a suburb of Portland. The center of the incident may have been either close to the mall's Macy's store or close to the food court.
Witnesses have reported hearing the sound of semi-automatic gunfire, as shoppers either exited the mall or hid inside stores. While there were initially no detailed reports about the shooter, some described a man wearing either camouflage or body armor.
Police managed to contain the situation by 5pm, with a spokesman saying the shooter had been "neutralized." Beyond that, the condition of the gunman remained unknown.

Joe Posnanski was in the middle of writing a biography of Joe Paterno, the man synonymous with Penn State football (settled in an area of Pennsylvania known as Happy Valley) when the Jerry Sandusky scandal exploded last November, but they include fresh details about Paterno’s state of mind during that chaotic period.
Now comes word that Al Pacino may play the man called JoePa by most students at Happy Valley in a new movie based on Posnanski’s recent book, Paterno, which detailed the last two years of the coach’s life. The movie will be reportedly produced by Rick Nicita, Pacino’s manager.

Whether or not you.re a fan of college football, you'd have to have been living snugly in a cave the past year not to know Joe Paterno. But his saintly image took a major blow when news hit that his former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, had been accused of multiple counts of sexual abuse against a string of young boys, sometimes on campus grounds. The Penn State scandal made headlines nationwide from that moment through Paterno's controversial firing in November of 2011, his death the following January, Sandusky's conviction on 45 counts of sexual abuse...

College football season officially begins tonight, and after Penn State made news earlier this week for cutting “Sweet Caroline” from its Beaver Stadium playlist — not because of the “touching me/touching you” lyric, the university’s spokesman insists, but because the song’s overused at other venues and “has no real origination here at Penn State” – we started wondering what music traditions are specific to certain colleges. It could be a song played over the loud-speaker (like “Sweet Caroline”), but even better, make it a tune played by the university’s band at each home game. Go!

Finally, Jerry Sandusky's part of the story is over. He will never be seen or heard from again. But his life will leave a lasting impact on our country and our culture.
Penn State University still has a lot of issues to sort through, because even with Sandusky behind bars, there are still plenty more who must be held accountable.
But far beyond the confines of Happy Valley, the fallout from this horrible story is going to stick with us for a long time. It has changed us. It has improved us, perhaps, in some ways. To a point, our anger is healthy. Our compassion for victims of sexual abuse is genuine. Our outrage at the institutional cover up is valuable.
Since the Sandusky story has broken, we've seen more and more people find the voice to tell the world, or maybe just a few trusted friends, that they were victims once too.
