Excellent episode

Warning: Spoilers
I was very impressed with this episode. It's one of my favorite episodes so far. I love how House handles the situation, staying in character and not losing his cool, getting off plenty of snappy sarcastic lines in the process. I thought it was cool how both men were obsessive beyond reason, and House saw that in him. It's also interesting how about 90% of this episode takes place in only 2 rooms (Cuddy's office and the MRI testing room). Olivia Wilde did some good acting in this episode, too, from simply being in pain to "I don't want to die!" There were a few things I didn't really get. For instance, during the transition to the MRI room, the editing jumps several times (cutting out a couple seconds each time) as they walk through the doors. I suppose this is because if nothing else, it might be more interesting to watch than a group of people walking down a hallway for 30 seconds. Also, House gradually loses layers of clothing between commercial breaks. At first he's wearing a coat, button-up shirt, and a T-shirt. By the end, he's only wearing the T-shirt, and we never see him lose any of it. (It's especially obvious during one of the last commercial breaks, in the MRI room. He's wearing button-up, commercials, and he's not! The shirt is nowhere to be found.) And, of course, the brief scene at the end between House and Cuddy leaves me wanting more! I wish they'd just work it out, or not. There's always been something between them, even if they don't know it. It'd be great to see them get together, or not, but the writers' teasing is driving me crazy!

Great Episode
iteabaggedstalin22 June 2009
This episode's a nice reprieve from the usual House formula. Note there were no "ironic" self-aware references to the predictability of the writing, references which are so annoyingly prevalent in every other episode before this one in Season 5. House's retorts are especially amusing and 13's acting is actually believable. Chase's and Foreman's roles confused me and seemed like superfluous details, maybe someone can explain to me why their decisions were meaningful. Sure the plot is somewhat implausible, but so is House's character, and the episode is engrossing in any case. Plus this episode has got to have the best soundtrack out of all the House episodes so far.

Kept me on the edge of my seat.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode started out slow, but it built with every test, every drug, every sarcastic quip from House. From the time the crazy idiot with the gun threw House's cane to the side I was hooked. My first thought was "oh no, he will get shot again" and it was in the back of my mind throughout the episode. I kept expecting them to give him something that would knock him out - but with him making someone else take the first shot every time it didn't happen. I was really surprised when House didn't take the ammunition out of the gun before handing it back to the sick guy. This episode was well written, well acted, and kept me on the edge of my seat!

powerful ending
kevinorrell9913 October 2011
I have to admit when the episode started my initial reaction was ughh, cheap entertainment. But the episode got more and more interesting as it progressed. Thirteen, who is quickly becoming my favorite character of the series (other than House himself) showed magnificent character development and was the star of the episode and displayed the most powerful climactic ending of the series. House himself was great in the show and the gunman really provided a cool mirror character to House. Great episode.

10/10

P.S. Why must we write ten lines of text to review a TV episode?

The patient has questionable motives
prjct28 November 2021
Were I in the House universe and couldn't get diagnosed I would have been looking up diagnostics specialists and found Dr. Greg House not Dr. Lisa Cuddy. I would have bought him so much more had he been after House from the start. "I'm always tired," isn't a reasonable excuse for, "I'm going to start shooting people who have nothing to do with my fatigue." That being said, this is one of the first episodes of House I ever watched and it is good. Olivia Wilde is awesome and for someone who looks like her to be okay with looking like hell for an episode says a lot about her as an ac. This is an important episode in 13s arch and is interesting, but I don't buy the patient. Why did he choose that hospital if not for House?

I liked this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
So far I enjoy season 5 a lot more than I did the previous two seasons. It is like the second one, minus House's ex wife drama. Last Resort is the « hostage » episode for the show. It isn't as good as the one from One Tree Hill, ER or even Grey's Anatomy, but it's regardless a welcomed change of tone from the usual format. Some decisions make absolutely no sense, but it adds to the suspense, and chaotic feel of the episode. Which served as a catalyst to Thirteen finally accepting her fear of dying, and ultimately agreeing to take the safety measures, to live through her illness. The cast was great and you could spot several TV actors there. And some of the acting from regulars, was very good and believable. I'm genuinely not understanding the hate it's getting.

Worst Episode - Can't Believe They Aired It
DanaliStar27 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is a wonderful example of destruction 101. I can't believe anyone could totally destroy a very good character (House) and a very good series in just one episode, but then seeing is believing. This was without a doubt a lame and truly pathetic episode..........and it got worse from there. Toward the end I was throwing things at the TV. It was so extremely bad, I was convinced someone wrote this to literally destroy the character they worked so hard to create. House, in my opinion, was an idiot so many times over in this episode, and the flow and plot so bad, that it bordered on sabotage. Incredibly lame and pointless. What a shame. Although there were many bad scenes in this one, it was easy for me to pick a winner........when House handed the gun back to the guy I thought I was going to stroke from hollering at the TV. I don't find many television type programs that I enjoy watching, so I took it very bad when they destroyed the character and the series in one whack. Ouch.......avoid this one, I wish I did.

Worst episode so far in the series
empecropeco7 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Disappointed. House gave the nutcase his gun back, and that should've put House in jail for starters, the second thing is that 13 should've quit after this episode. House basically enabled the lunatic to make 13 his guinea pig, which almost killed her. Chase and Foreman did the right thing by leaving him in the differential, I'm surprised why the rest didn't do the same. Cuddy should've fired him and 13 should've sued him as well. But this show is anything but realistic, so why am I surprised?

one of the worst episodes of the series
foppejan226 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Good Lord, how desperate are these writers to find ways to draw analogies between patient and staff behavior, so that the people Around House can Improve Themselves? First off, the 'desperate' (and desperate-to-know) Patient (Gee, would this be House? Who is otherwise not fleshed out at all, so we couldn't care less about why it matters so much to him to be diagnosed. Which also makes any comparison with House utterly idiotic. Then, since House is a Police series now, we get the standard try to incapacitate the patient. Which results in the shooting of a hostage, and the scenario in which the writers can nearly kill 13, so that she can learn how she really wants to live. Only, the 'self-destructive' 13 seemed gone a couple of episodes ago already, so why was this necessary?.

Then, continue with a bunch of shots in which basically nothing happens. Chase walking out: purposeless. Foreman's doing so: Worse, especially the 'apology' at the end, as there was no reason for him to apologize whatever.. It's not like he was needed for the diagnosis, which had nothing to do with neurology. Then, ignoring all the shots in which the patient could've easily been overpowered, or how they could've just given House 2 different medications, with the one meant for 13 being harmless, while the patient's dose could've put him out, and so on. (of course, this is not really a police series, it's a series about House wanting to Find Stuff Out). We take the gun away, but don't see the SWAT team act on the information that the guy is now unarmed, so, we give the guy his gun back, and cue countless taunts about people wanting to die, and people being cowards, (with the most convoluted reason for being a coward that I've heard yet) a scene in which the patient suddenly decides to kill 13, and just as suddenly (because she really looks lovely when begging for her life, and maybe because they wanted to show us a scene in which an irrationally behaving woman has to beg a male for the right to continue existing) decides not to kill her anymore. Anyway, possible misogyny references aside, this really was the worst plot yet. Nothing happens at all, we never heard anything about the patient to make us like him, the accusation of House being monomaniacal in his need to know was pointless, because nothing was done with it, and 13's crying makeup suddenly disappeared when she was blown to the ground.

You have to be kidding
ctomvelu-126 November 2008
HOUSE jumped the shark a couple of seasons back with the seemingly unending story arc involving David Morse as a vengeful cop. The following season, it slowly crawled back from the grave. And in the most recent season, it has had its share of ups and downs. The Nov. 25th episode, LAST RESORT, once again dances with that pesky shark. A nutcase takes House, 13 and several civilians hostage, so that House will diagnose this guy's apparently undiagnosable condition. The episode gets really silly, so silly I dare not say for fear of giving away too much in case you decide to watch it. Personally, I got so fed up with it, I never did listen to what was ultimately wrong with the guy. This episode is strictly from hunger. Watch an old episode of LOST instead.

It gets only worse
ruuddecember-4436326 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It starts of promissing. A guy with a gun demands a diagnoses. An unlikely scenario, but the viewer should be flexible enough to go with it. It is a tv show, after all. However, there is only so much you can take. The story just does not make sense at all. A few MAJOR flaws:
  • the viewer is made to feel some kind of empathy towards the gunman, by showing his background and medical bills. However, he is cruel and selfish for the entire ride
  • 13 wants to die reeeeaaaal bad. Until the ending seconds. She became increasingly reckless because of the huntingtons. This is a development in the season. In this episode however, she is borderline suïcidal.

  • house gives the gun back... again, the guy was a rude psychopath the entire episode. Is House suïcidal too? And even if House woud rather find a diagnoses than live, couldnt he at least let Evans go? I mean, he was still there... and 13 as well. Why didnt Evans protest Houses decision to give the gun back btw? I would run as soon as I would see that crazy look on Houses face.

  • no penalty for House? Are you kidding me? I know he gets away with stuff in the hospital. Thats the idea of the show. But he is commiting a serious crime here. Are officers just going to ignore the fact House became an accomplice?!

All in all. Just dont watch this episode.
