The movie's story started as a live sketch show that Tyler Bonner and Daphne Bonner wrote and performed as part of Philly Sketchfest 2017. Shortly after the show's performance, they began developing the script into a feature-length screenplay. In addition to a few basic plot points and details, the only sketch that made it into the film intact is where Marge confuses Chuck for the stranger in the dive bar.
The name tag of the guard who gets shot in the break room reads "Danny Angel" - an homage to Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's characters in Hot Fuzz (2007), one of Tyler Bonner and Daphne Bonner's biggest inspirations for Chuck Lawson.
While filming the chase scene in FDR park, the generator stopped working, so they had to power the lights through one of the cars on set.
The Agency Headquaters was filmed using a miniature set. Because the Agency HQ is located underground, Tyler Bonner and Daphne Bonner thought a miniature would be the best way to achieve a cave-like set for the cheapest amount of money.
The character Algernon got her name from the sci-fi novel Flowers for Algernon. Both characters are the first successful subjects in an experiment: in the novel, Algernon is the first mouse to undergo an intelligence enhancing surgery; in Chuck Lawson, Algernon is the first A.I. ever created.
