We hear a lot from horror fans that "everything happens in La or New York; how about something for those of us in-between?" Well, it's not quite the Midwest or the Mountain States, but folks in and around Richmond, Virginia, have one helluva cool event to look forward to!
Join artist Gris Grimly at The Poe Museum on Thursday, September 24th, 2009, from 6pm to 9pm, for an evening of entertainment. The event ties in with the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe, and Grimly will be signing his New book Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Death and Dementia. There will also be a display of original artwork from the book, light refreshments, a cash bar in the Enchanted Garden, musical entertainment and a free screening of Grimly’s short film "Cannibal Flesh Riot" (review here), followed by a screening of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow at 9pm for $5.00.

Gris Grimly is one of modern horror's iconoclasts. An accomplished artist, his work has adorned books by everyone from Edgar Allan Poe to Neil Gaiman. He's also directed short films and videos starring the likes of Elvira. And he's developing a feature-length, stop-motion-animated version of Pinocchio with none other than Guillermo Del Toro. We caught up with him last week on the set of his second short (after Cannibal Flesh Riot) – Wounded Embark of the Lovesick Mind, starring David Backhaus and Darla Gordon. The film details what happens when the aptly named Lovesick – a young man on the brink of some Poe-style madness – realizes that Beauty, the object of his affection, has had enough of him. This...

A couple of updates came through via Twitter today from director Darren Bousman and mad creator Gris Grimly.
San Diego Comic-Con just gets bigger and bigger, but they still find room to include a lot of genre panels and screenings. And they even bring back some of the most popular guests. Like Bousman, who wrote, "Awesome-looks like there will be a Repo showing at Comic Con this year... That, plus Mothers Day plus my secret project all at the Con!" We just love secrets!
Follow @darren_bousman to keep yourself in the know.
One thing that's no secret is how multi-talented Gris Grimly is. The artist/illustrator/filmmaker wrote and directed the short "Cannibal Flesh Riot" (review), which has been out of print for a while. But good news in 140 characters came from Grimly: "Just approved the DVD check discs for Cannibal Flesh Riot! I don't know about you, but...

Gris Grimly returns with another demented short film adapted from his own warped paintings, "Wounded Embark of the Lovesick Mind". The film, a surreal and nightmarish study of love and obsession, details a one-sided relationship between Lovesick and the object of his affection, Beauty. When it becomes clear that the girl wants nothing to do with her admirer, he turns to murder in order to preserve her beauty.
According to Gris, "This is not a film for the little tykes. In fact, even some of you who loved my last film 'Cannibal Flesh Riot!' (review) may be in for a horrid surprise. It's a realistically dark psychological journey through madness with mature themes and stark violence," as evidenced by the photos he provided.

We recently got an update from one of the hardest working men in horror, Gris Grimly, as to what he's been up to, and two items definitely stood out.
First is Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Death and Dementia, the long-awaited sequel to Grimly's 2004 Tales of Mystery and Madness. This time around Gris adds his unique illustrations to Poe's classic "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Oblong Box", "The Strange Case of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether", and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar". According to the artist, this book is the same size, shape, and format as the first volume, only "darker, more demented, and better all around." It won't be out for a while, but why not go ahead and pre-order Tales of Death and Dementia from Evilshop.
Second we have those graverobbing ghouls from the short film "Cannibal Flesh Riot", Stash and Hub, memorialized in...

As if Pinocchio wasn't weird and scary enough, it's about to get the stop-motion overhall by none other that Late Film-officiated honourable duo, Guillermo del Toro and Gris Grimly. Del Toro is, of course, the Mexican director behind my supernatural fave, The Devil's Backbone, and Gris Grimly is a resident here for Cannibal Flesh Riot! (you can see the trailer for this stop-motion-embalmed short here.)
Well, amongst other big news for the Hellboy 2: The Golden Army DVD/Blu-ray launch party, news is this gruesome twosome are to unite for "trying to get a full stop-motion version of Gris Grimly’s Pinocchio off the ground, with the Jim Henson Company." Praise be and Amen to that superb news and lets hope these two great talents pull together to make this a reality. Certainly some of the more exciting film news of late and always a pleasure to see a bit of originality in proceedings.
