Emily Bunt is Great
e_daneva28 December 2023
Lisa the Drama Queen is an amazing episode. I have watched 6 other Season 20 episodes, and there is 1 bad, 2 okay, 3 good, and 1 really good. This episode falls in the good category. I know this is a parody of Heavenly Creatures, and even thought I have never watched Heavenly Creatures I still like this episode. Emily Bunt is just so good as Juliet. She is probably the best guest star who played a kid. Unlike all the other guest stars who played a kid, she actually sounded like a real kid. Also her accent is very soothing. If Lisa even comments on her voice then I will too. Emily Bunt gives life to this episode and makes it a good one. I would recommend this episode to you if you like Heavenly Creatures or you like fantasy. In all, I give this episode a 7.0 out of 10.

What would Peter Jackson think? (possible spoilers)
makeupbuddha2 February 2009
Has anyone else noticed that this is the Simpson's version of Heavenly Creatures? I saw Heavenly Creatures in 1994 when it came out in limited release at my college, and it has remained a favorite film of mine. After directing this and Dead Alive, I was surprised to see that Peter Jackson would be the director for the Lord of the Rings films many years later. Lisa is Melanie Lynskey's character Pauline, Juliet is Kate Winslet's character (also named Juliet in the film). The girls are obsessed with Josh Groban, which mirrors the girls' in Heavenly Creatures' obsession with operatic singer Mario Lanza. Lisa and Juliet made up an alternate world called Equalia, counterpart to one called Borovnia in Heavenly Creatures. The Simpsons have made a million references to pop culture, both high and lowbrow, but this one was completely unexpected! I rather liked it, but I can see how someone who hasn't seen Heavenly Creatures would find this episode incredibly weird.

Worst episode of anything ever, Period.
zacpetch17 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen almost every single episode of The Simpsons and can say that this is by a long way the worst of the lot. We're talking about a series that also includes the likes of 'That 90s Show', 'Homer's Enemy', 'Kill The Alligator And Run', 'All Singing All Dancing', 'The Computer Wore Menace Shows', 'Simpson Safari' and 'Saddlesore Galactica' but this is even worse. I would even go so far as to say that this is the worst episode of any season of any show ever, period.

Let's take a look at what went so horribly wrong with this mess. Lisa meets Juliet (Emily Blunt) who is, like her, intelligent. The two embark upon a friendship due to their similarities drawing them together. They write a novel about a magical kingdom (sorry, Queendom... UGH!!!) called Equalia (UGH!!!) but it's not long before they begin to lose their minds and believe they really live there. They eventually get kidnapped (???) by the bullies and in order to escape they tell Kearney their story and he loves it so he lets them escape by beating up Jimbo and Dolph while they run for it. Then Lisa declares that Juliet is mad. The end.

There's no redeeming features here at all and I honestly cannot believe several things about it.

1: The writer was Brian Kelley who previously wrote 'Margical History Tour' which was a mess. Who let him back in the writing room? He would admittedly redeem himself with 'Brick Like Me' but this is beyond acceptable.

2: The sequences showing Lisa's and Juliet's friendship are a bit creepy. Their singing was enough to make my dog howl when this first aired. The two look for a while like they're about to have a lesbian encounter which is not something that I'd expect anyone wants to see one of our main Simpsons doing. Very odd.

3: Emily Blunt accepted the part of Juliet. WHY? She's one of Hollywood's finest actresses and she must have seen the script for this episode. I cannot comprehend of why she did this episode. This is now permanently on her CV and will forever be her worst performance on screen. She must be pleased you only hear her voice and don't actually see her so as to remove association with this. Her talent is wasted here.

Need I say more? This is the worst thing I've ever seen. If they ever make an episode like this again then it's proof that The Simpsons should be cancelled.

I should decline to leave a rating for this episode because out of ten I can't justify giving it even one. This is worthy of <0/10 and that's if I'm generous. However, IMDb demands I give it a rating... Let's just give it 1/10 and call it a day.

Surprisingly Good

No matter what the Simpsons do haters will hate they will hate any episode that comes after season 10 reality is I've been a die-hard Simpsons fan my whole life yes without question it's really declined it hasn't been outstanding since season 9 beyond that it's really been in decline but there has been some great episodes throughout its run of the last 2 decades For all the bad ones there's been some good ones that has kept the Faith in The Simpsons alive this is one episode that does that.. I was really surprised considering what it was about I actually enjoyed this but of course as you can see with the comments here you will always have haters.. this wasn't bad considering it was a episode about imagination considering it features Josh Groban songs it actually wasn't too bad worth a watch it wasn't the best Simpsons episode but it wasn't the worst I've seen far worse this was actually a good episode.

Great Episode, One of The Best
southlog18 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This review is just my personal opinion, and I don't think other people really feel the same, so keep that in mind:

People often say that The Simpsons is bad now, or that it has lost all meaning. This episode proves them wrong. I usually hate episodes where Lisa gets a new friend, but this one just mesmerizes me with its creativity and amazing jokes. Marge vs. The Monorail didn't have a very solid plot, but it made up for it with non-stop laughter. Lisa The Drama Queen nails the non-stop jokes part, except for pausing. In these pauses, we get to see Lisa and her new friend imagine Equalia. The ideas and themes in Equalia are just so creative yet charming at the same time! The best part for me is when they're singing on the merry-go-round, because it has jokes all around it, yet it shows how well these two bond together. Another great moment is when they talk about Equalia on the hammock. It just goes to show how great they are together, and that you don't need jokes to make a good Simpsons episode. Overall, I think this is one of the best episodes and the one I would MOST recommend you to watch.

Agree that it could have been an awesome Halloween episode
poisonkittenmeow29 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I have been a fan of Heavenly Creatures from the first time I saw it and it didn't take me long to see it was loosely based on the true story movie. I think more people may have appreciated it had they made it into a, of course more kid friendly reflection, Halloween episode. Perhaps with a tiny murder plot to keep the friends together, the Simpons Halloween episodes are hardly death free. I was still delighted to see them take a similar scene where the two girls begin their bond when the painting is not what the teacher had instructed. Also, rich outgoing Juliet and poorer socially awkward Lisa, the twos imaginary world, and rebellion at their separation from the movie. Although I was slightly disappointed with the bullies taking them captive at the end and Lisa thinking Juliet to be "coo coo" but maybe I didn't get it or, hey they had to end it somehow.

I was surprised too!

Warning: Spoilers
I am also a huge fan of Heavenly Creatures and couldn't believe when The Simpsons came out with this parody! I'm actually in the middle of the episode online right now...but had to rush over to IMDb to see if anyone else had made a comment regarding the likeness between the two!

Too bad it wasn't a Halloweene episode...because then the girls could have taken Marge down a creepy path and beaten her head in with a brick. Perhaps a tad too dark for the Simpsons...but come on, I bet several people thought the same thing! I'd better get back to watching so I can see just how far the creators of Simpsons go in their parodies!
