marvelous and humorous doc
framptonhollis26 October 2017
For fans of the source material (I, for one, practically WORSHIP the works of Joyce and believe "Ulysses" to be the crowning achievement in all of literary history), this quick, constantly moving documentary is a fun and informative ride. Through an educational narration, interviews with figures like Anthony Burgess, reenactments of Joyce's time writing the novel, and vivid adaptations of some of its select chapters, this portrait of the most brilliant of artists and his most brilliant of works is entertaining and funny. When shown through visuals, read aloud, and performed-Joyce's prose is given a whole new depth (although, in all honesty, "Ulysses" DOES mostly belong on the written page, pure and simple) and his sharp, clever, and often dirty comedy is even further realized in this joyful hour of wit and grace.
