- Late summer off the coast of 1960's New England. Dino just wants to catch a tan on the beach until Sebastian, a stranger, shows up on the island. The two share an amorous afternoon together, each interpreting their encounter differently when it is over.
- In the waning days of summer, Dino, a quiet young man, dozes off alone on a New England beach in the 1960s. Suddenly, a handsome stranger approaches him and rouses him gently, requesting that Dino look after his belongings. The man dresses down to his revealing swimsuit. Then as Dino looks on in admiration, the stranger soon disappears into the water.
Later, Dino is engrossed in Gore Vidal's 1948 homosexual-themed novel, The City and the Pillar, when the stranger returns from his swim. The two chat briefly, and the stranger reveals his plans to depart for home the following day. Seemingly bored of his stay in New England, the man bluntly asks Dino if he would like to engage in a sexual encounter to which Dino agrees, albeit with a sense of great shock. Nonetheless, the viewer can see in Dino's eyes that he has longed for a fantasy like this one to come along.
Departing the beach to venture into the secluded woods, Dino and the alluring stranger consummate their attraction with a great palpable passion. We see Sebastian alleviate Dino's nerves as he caresses his body. Afterward as they share a smoke, the men exchange names and we learn the seductive stranger's name is Sebastian. A funny and sweet moment becomes as the men shake hands for the first time.
The film concludes with an enigmatic display of emotion which weaves across Sebastian's face, leaving audiences to ponder what might become, or what more could have become, of this impromptu romantic liaison. As they part way, it is clear that this chance encounter has left a profound impact on both Dino and Sebastian, and that their lives will never be quite the same again.
